    Sir, I have been a millwright for many years and I must say, I would consider this video and your practices to be of the most professional I've seen! You have my respect.

    Well put video detailing the shimming process regarding lower units.
    Each manufacturer varies in how it is done, but the video does a good job showing that you can't just throw parts in and expect it to work.

    Must be nice to work on a brand new unit untouched by salt water and corrosion.
    Thanks for showing the disassembly as well. 👍

    at 15:50, one solution, use a plastic "bung" (for sealing leaking fittings on boats), or a sprung steel sheet, rolled up, this forces the needles out, keeping them in position; the insilation of the shaft can push this out, and with the spring steel, this can be removed afterwards quite easily.

    Great video, very professional work! Just one thing. When you measure the backlash I believe, by listening the sounds that the measured backlash includes the ''slack'' in the clutch dog. Remember the forward. The prop shaft does not move but there is a slack between the tooths of the clutch dog and the tooths where the clutch dog 'bit' in the forward and reverse gears. Think about it and let me know!

    Brilliant information, my engine wasn’t going forward, just into neutral and reverse, took the gearbox apart n fixed what I thought was the problem but after assembling it back it now goes into neutral and forward but not reverse, I’m starting to think it may be something todo with the shift shaft?

    John, thanks for taking the time to put together a informative video. I am in the process of rebuilding the lower unit on my F225 and must have watched your videos at least 5 times today to educate myself. Service manual is nice but it makes much more sense after I watched your video.
    Question: When measuring the backlash at the end, where do you measure the backlash in relation to the center of your drive shaft? Do you measure the radius of the pinion, add that measurement to the radius? Thanks in advance for the comment you might provide.

    I have a 115ETLJ and in the rear I have a nipple 6E5-45378-00-00 with a hose 90445-07MF2-00 connected to it and is closest to the gear shaft. When I was changing the Impeller I had to disconnect this hose when pulling out the lower unit and was wondering what this hose connection was for.

    while viewing this video when you were measuring backlash I noticed you didn't where the dial indicator should be located. It makes a huge difference where it is mounted. Out 1/4 inch or in 1/4 inch changes indicator reading drastically. On the yamaha tool there is exact mark for the indicator bracket. manual also gives exact height to locate indicator tool. I can't find tool. is there a way to figure out where it should be located?

    This was a great video. I just had a prop shaft replaced on a 1996 Yamaha 200 and after the repair the prop shaft now moves in and out about a 1/4 inch...prior to the repair it moved 1/16 if at all (just enough to prevent binding). The marine shop didn't touch any of the forward, reverse or pinion gears so I am not sure where or how there can now be movement as there isn't any spacing difference on the output shaft, seals, etc. withing the prop shaft housing? Any thoughts would help as I don't want to run it if the movement has the threat of additional damage?

    Very informative video, unbelievable how prices these tolerances are. So what would cause back and forward (in and out of the housing) play in the prop shaft? I have one Yamaha F150 lower unit that has almost none and the other has quite a bit? The one that has plan in it, STBD side, it quite a bit noiser than the other one in general.

    • @geraldlacasse7986
      @geraldlacasse7986 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion, yes. The prop shaft is held in place(in/out) with the reverse gear and bearing carrier. The distance of the final race is also involved. GL
