    Vincent has always been on my top 5 bad guys list. Most people would probably label him a sociopath in this movie but that would be a disservice to his character. He clearly struggles, in several scenes, with disgust at the lack of morality in society, and even shows regret after killing the jazz player. He seems to loathe societal hypocrisy and the disconnect most people have with their lives and the rest of the world. I honestly wish they would have fleshed his backstory out a little more because his character seems to really struggle with some trauma in his past. Max calls him out on missing certain things that basic human beings 'just have' earlier in the movie but at the end, I think, he finally understands Vincent's struggle. Its not that he's missing those things, in fact, he acknowledges them to a much higher degree than Max does.

    Even though I'm sure Vincent could have decided to kill Max, he has a shred of humanity left in him because he likes Max. He decides to let things play out the way they did because he knows things will end up being better for Max because of it. Max had finally taken life by the horns and decided his own fate. It was something Vincent had tried to get Max to understand. Even as a sociopathic killer, Vincent had a few small bits of decency left in him when he connected with Max. Great writing all around.

    • @ruffwm
      @ruffwm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      altho this is a nice thought, it's untrue.. he wasn't trying to get max to come out of his shell to help him.. he was trying to paint him as a person that finally snapped and lost control,
      all people would know is a guy who was always kind or selfless.. and this one night he snapped at his boss, when off the rails, pretended to be a crime guy in the restaurant, was acting crazy and erratic.. he was going to use max as a scapegoat for killing all these people and no one would even know Vincent was even there..
      in the beginning of the movie Mark Ruffalo's character is explaining how there was another case awhile back of a "cab driver" who snapped and killed a bunch of people before taking his own life.. meaning Vincent has done this method before, and was planning to do it again with Max.

    Vincent lost because he instinctively went for two shots center mass and one headshot as he had trained himself to do, and the bullets hit the center of the train door Max was standing behind. Max basically shot on impulse and his less accurate shots passed through the off-center windows to hit Vincent.

      Vincent was over confident with his routine tendencies. He did have a clear shot until Max stepped off-center when the lights turned off and still attempted a headshot without seeing his target. It’s a case of Vincent’s skill losing to Max’s luck.

      It was, actually. It's a watch it twice pair of moment, but Vincent's M.O. is discussed amongst the cops hunting for him. He's hinted at having done this before, hiring a taxi driver to drive him to his hits, and after all his targets are dead, he'd kill the driver and frame him for the murders before taking his flight out and look like the driver just went crazy. If you listen to when Vincent offers Max the money for the multi-stop trip, he makes a point about giving him extra money for getting him to his flight early. This would have given him time to frame Max, but we don't know this at the time, because the story of him having done this before only comes up much later. It's also why that one officer believes Max is innocent and tries to save him, while the rest of the cops think Max is Vincent; he figured that an everyday, purely civilian taxi driver just going out on a killing spree with military efficiency and no prior history of violence just didn't make sense.

    I know some people hate on this because they wonder how a cab driver killed a professional hitman but they missed one of themes and messages of the movie. Vincent lectured Max earlier about adapting and rolling with situations as they can change on a whim but if you noticed throughout the movie Vincent uses an old gun technique where it's two to the chest and one in the head with his kills without thinking as if it's muscle memory. In this scene, he tries to do the same by firing 3 shots in the exact same position in the dark while Max fired wildly and was bound to hit something. Because Vincent didn't adapt to the current situation like the lights turning off and not being able to see clearly he stuck to the same old routine thinking that would work and ended up shooting the wall. He contradicted himself by sticking to the same technique instead of shooting wildly like Max did in the dark. Max adapted to the situation by facing him instead of running like he always did before since he didn't have a choice but to fight for his life when he had nowhere else to run. My head canon is Vincent isn't angry with Max after he gets shot because he finally understood why Max won. You can see it when he sits and closes his eyes in reflection.

    • @erikdayne5429
      @erikdayne5429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I don’t think he was angry because he believes in survival of the fittest. That’s how he justified killing people. If they couldn’t defend themselves then they deserved to die. So when the shoe was on the other foot, he stuck to his beliefs. He couldn’t be mad about being beaten because by being beaten it meant he deserved to be beaten. I also think on some level he knew he had to be stopped. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but it looked to me like he put his head down in shame and looked away when he heard his target walking towards them, so on some level he understood that by dying, this innocent woman would survive, and he accepted that.

    Cruise was incredible in this movie. He came off as a true sociopathic assassin, yet there was something charismatic about him throughout. He did a good job of showing the bond he developed between Vincent and Max. Most of the things Vincent did to save Max where business related and to cover his tracks, but you sensed he sort of liked Max at some level.

      Yeah *I* don't know what the *Big Deal* about his *Height* is ? They talk about the *Man* like he's a *little midget*

      And neither *Van Damme*

      *Tom Cruise* put more than his *Ass* on the *Line* just to *Entertain* us.
      If this *aint* a *Testament* that He's *"Real "Hollywood" Badass* along with The *Greats* like

    IF you look when Vincent shoots at Max, he shoots a typical Mozambique drill which is 2 body 1 head. He did to the muggers in the alley way as well. One of the most common handgun drills practiced. The door blocked those three shots as you can see at @2:21 if you slow it down. Vincent's training is what caused him to die in this situation, while Max's panic ended up getting lucky

      Althought *Facts*
      It *Looked* like a *Quick Draw* showdown *Reminiscent* of the *Wild West*
      But this *Time* it was more of a *Testament* of *Accuracy* and *Most* Importantly *Courage* and *Valor*
      which *Max* (The Underdog Type) became the *Victor* instead of Vincent's Next *Victim*
      It *Seemed* that that's what *He* wanted.
      Maybe *He* wanted to *find* a *Challenge* that was *Worthy*
      kind of *like* the *Predator*
      It *Kind* of *Feels* like *Vincent* Pushed him to the *Max*
      to *Harness* his *True Potential* like a *Apollo* did to *Rocky*

    By my count at least four of Vincent's shots go into the door (Two chest height, one head height, one side of the glass) while at least three of Max's pass through the glass on either side. Victory: Max. Panic, or adaptation to the situation?
