FULL SPOILERS FOR COLLATERAL (2004) IN VIDEO!
In this video essay I explore the notion of (symbolic) masculinity in Michael Mann's COLLATERAL (2004), through the lens of psychologists Dr. Carl Jung and Robert L. Moore. How do we deal with masculinity in the modern world? Is it a harmful construct that only brings about toxicity, or is it an inherent and inescapable part of humanity and can, and should, it be harnessed for the good of oneself and for society? These questions and more will be discussed in this analysis.

In a time where masculinity is described as toxic, we need this truth to be spoken. Brilliantly made video, my friend.

That Vincent, a professional killer, would loose in a gunfight against Max who barely knows how to use a gun has always bothered me a little. But then I looked closer: Vincent shoots his victims always in the same, precise manner: two bullets to the chest, one to the head. Unfortunately for him, that's exactly where the metal part of the door which separates the two men is. If you look closely you can even see the dents left in the metal where the bullets hit it. Max on the other hand just fires blindly, and therefore manages to hit Vincent through the glass windows. Isn't it an amazing detail that in the end, Max survives by improvising and Vincent dies because he follows blind routine?

Island's Limos would've gone out of business in a few years anyway (Uber). Vincent did Max a favor. lol

"Max's excellence and orderliness as a cabdriver are exposed to be part of his weakness." Couldn't put it better, I've never noticed. Thank you for this.

Such a great video essay. Collateral was instantly one of my favorite movies when I saw it as a young teenager, probably just because it was a well done crime flick with remarkable acting and a great character arc. These superficial features compelled me to watch it time and time again throughout the years. I'd get a year older, watch it again, and so forth... until one night in my mid-twenties after going a few years without seeing it, and after going through some real shit of my own in life, I sat down to REALLY watch it. Alone, in the dark, sound up, no distractions. I was behind Max's wheel. I was in Vincent's suit. The emotional weight of the film came crashing down on my reality like the "fat Angeleno" on my windshield. Chills washed over my body as the coyote crossed the street. Tears welled up in my eyes before I crashed the cab. I squared off with myself on the city train. The newly accountable, selfless man in me traded fire with his scarred, nihilistic mentor counterpart and emerged unscathed... unafraid. After learning from my demon the virtues of strength and assertiveness... I let him ride off to the horizon, painful childhood and all. Think anyone will notice?

I've always loved the way this film was shot. The digital video technology available at the time gave it a really unique look especially with it's excellent cinematography.

Great video Thomas! I've always been such a fan of this movie, the simplicity of the story but with such incredible performances, I always found it to be almost hypnotic. I think this is an important discussion to be having as well, these days you hear a lot about how harmful masculinity is, which of course it can be, but men need to find a healthy balance-to tame their bulls, because like it or not masculinity is how we find our strength and push ourselves beyond our comfortable limits.

Amazing essay. I never until now had noticed that Vincent repeated his signature bullet pattern in the metro door, what a great detail. On the part of Max, I remember reading on the movie director's commentary by Michael Mann that if Max hadn't closed his eyes and completely let go before stepping out in the corridor to shoot Vincent, as in to go with the flow, "improvise", he would have ended up dead, hence why he was luckily able to slide a bullet through one of the door's windows and hit Vincent probably in the liver.

This was such an insightful video. Before watching this, ive always just seen Collateral as a typical friday night action movie. Now, I have a greater appreciation for its storytelling and themes, didnt know how i missed it in the first viewing. Great video.

I think it was more about leaving comfort zone, which is always uneasant and a bit chaotic. So maybe not masculinity so much as leaving the comfort zone
