Thanks so much for mentioning about the primer repelling at first. It's the one thing I've been curious about but haven't seen mentioned. Delighted that you confirmed I can put water based over it too. Great video!
If you are in business the price is important. Please don’t be influenced by rude people - so done with these self centered attitudes. Thank you for sharing; it’s very informative.
Key item: if you get your paint & have the paint mixer shake it. If the paint has sat, always use paint stir sticks or a drill powered paint mixer. Need to get the heavier parts mixed in with the other part. Did not know Zinser had a shellac based primer. Game changer, thanks for sharing!😊😊😊
Make sure you have good ventilation and a mask when using BIN shellac primer. Also ammonia mixed with warm water will clean your brushes and it's 1/8 the price of mineral spirits.
Laminate can also be made out of paper layers pressed together and that definitely needs to be very well sealed with the primer so no moisture can penetrate it so it doesn't swell or peel off.
Short, simple, and to the point!! Thanks! I am so excited that I don’t have to sand. I have a kitchen and two bathroom cabinets. I imagine if you paint the cabinets in the kitchen the bathrooms should match too yes? Thanks so much for the help!!!
Thank you sooooo much for doing this vid!! I've been trying to upcycle different bits of furniture for ages and it's always been a slog getting the piece sanded etc...this stuff is aaahhmmaazing!! I'll never use anything else now so thank you again,x 😊
Sanding is always recommend especial on laminate. By doing that you create a “profile” for the paint to stick on. That will most probably avoid the need for a second layer of primer. Thx for the video. I think the bottom line is to get your proposed primer which is pricy but seems to be the best solution.
@@vaderladyl Yes, even a very fast light sanding with extremely course sandpaper, does make a world of difference. This gives you the "TOOTH' for the primer and everything else to bond well. If this is a pantry shelf, or something like that, then a water based topcoat really does help. Very much worth the time and money.
If the paint is repelled you should spread it, wait ten minutes and then try again, the paint will become slightly thicker and more 'paste' like and will smear better (You can just keep rolling away but this gives you time for a cup of tea) When using a roller don't make the mistake I did - It turns out rollers have different textures. I used the same big one for the walls and it left everything a bit bobbbly, try and find a smoothish roller if possible. I had to go over everything with a big brush to make it actually flat.
This is exactly what I was looking for! You explained this so well and I loved the tip about the primer as I would have thought I did something wrong when I start. You just gained a new subscriber. 🥰
Me too. Iam going to paint my living room for grey, so I’ve been watching all morning all different video’s until I saw her video. Exactly what I am looking for
This has been super helpful. I'm painting my first piece of furniture ever and have just applied the 2nd coat of primer. So far, so good! I'm wondering what type of paint brush I should use for areas where a roller won't work?
Awesome video! I just bought a used motorized desk for my home office and have been struggling with how to change it to fit my style. I was going to delaminate it, but your video was brief and helpful. I just mentioned to my wife that we can repaint all of our Ikea bedroom furniture instead of buying new. She still wants the new stuff though, haha! But at least I'll get the desk that I really wanted.
Great video💯Would the same rules apply to paint over varnished surface. Thinking of repainting mahogany varnished staircase and looking for an easy route?
Thankyou awesome i used water based, and did 1 coat of paint, luckily i noticed the paint coming off easily before applying more coats, i have this, so now to look for video on how to fix doing it wrong the first time?
I have look at so many videos on how to refinish furniture. All of them sanding is involved. The piece that I want to paint is an old table that I bought from target and it only cost me fifty dollars. After seeing this I will be doing it this way. Thanks for making this video.
Thank you for mentioning that the primer appears to repel in the first coat!! No one mentions that 😭 I thought it wasn't working and I gave up. I'll make another attempt on my bookshelf now 💕
Hi thanks a lot for this vedio. Can you guide me , how many types of primer and where we can use before painting the doors and fram. Water-based primer where should we use..
Oil base primer is the best. 30yrs painter. Always light sand. Before and between coats. 3m sand pads. Paint doesn’t need sealer. The paint is the sealer. If it repels, it’s not sticking. It dried Over it and didn’t grab the finish.
Nice video. Is this way is suitable for the changing the colour of spray painted furniture. Actually I need to change the pink painted bed to white colour.
Thank you for showing the details of how the primer looks when applied to laminate! I was worried of it not being smooth/the same result as if it was applied to wood. Just what I needed!
Welp I’m going to be trying this today. Got a dresser for $10 and lots of space. DIY here I come. Thank you for this. Really easy to follow and understand ☺️
Thank you for your video, enjoyed it. I have a question. I have a dining room table...top laminate that I want to upscale and give a farmhouse style look, paint with wallnut wood...but the laminate itself has a few bubbles....what process would u say wld work best for this project? Wld appreciate your comment 😁
Thanks so much! If I'm painting a table top white, can I use the exact same method? Or should I do anything different to make sure that the table surface is not sticky?
Final step is to seal everything. Use a polycrylic, which is water based if you are using light colors or white, OR use a polyurethane which is more durable and oil based. Try using at least 2 coats. Give enough dry ti.e between each coat.
Thanks for this video! Exactly the advice I was looking for and couldn't find in other videos. I plan to paint bookcases. The shelves will hold a lot of books that will slide in/out of the shelves. I have a big library of books. If I use latex paint, will the paint chip/flake over time as books are moved around? Or, is using the recommended primer the trick to avoid that? Or, should I use an oil-based paint?
Thanks! This is very helpful. Due to a flood caused by a leaky toilet valve, I have a downstairs bathroom laminate vanity to paint next. Now I know what to do.
For such a small project, a quick once over with a manual piece of sandpaper would save all this rolling... maybe clean it with vinegar too. What will the uneven look in the primer do for your final coat? It looks lumpy...
love this thank you! Question... i want to use Fusion Mineral Paint can i use this primer before as well? from what i read it doesn't need a primer but I don't trust it? would you recommend it? thanks!

Yes this works but if you want a smooth coat i lightly sand with 300 grit paper between primer coats just to smooth out any bumps, you can also do this between paint coats for a smooth finish
With a shellac based primer, will the furniture need to offgas somwhere? Is a respirator recommended? When I used shellac finish on a wood dresser for a staining project, the fumes made me quite sick, even when I moved the project outside.
