Seeing some "cheap" laminate pieces get a makeover warms my heart. So many people are so snobbish about the "real wood" and scoff at laminate - when these piece usually have so much use in them once the outside gets refreshed:)
Thank you for doing the bottoms! I hate when I see furniture flippers not do the bottoms of pieces or the backs. Especially when these pieces are being sold for upwards of $500, I feel like a fully finished piece of furniture just feels so much more refined!
It's also gross. That's usually the dirtiest part of the piece, and if there were odors in the home, they will stay in the piece. Ew. At the very least, a single coat of primer is needed but paint completely finishes the job.
I started flipping furniture last week. Sometimes ppl dont do the back or underside because they weren't done in the first place. Ppl don't get the hours that are put into refining some peices. You dont just sand and paint. You take all hardware off clean everything a few times. Sad and prime and paint then sand then paint and seal it. Then decoupage and seal then seal again. Paint the hardware or buy new. The paints and supplies add up. Let alone the several hours they put into them. I purchased a desk for 40.00. It took about 8 hours just to take off all hardware and clean every nook and crannies. Sand it and fix any imperfections. Then the prime and a few coats of paint. Lined the drawers and did dixibelle furniture transfers. Cleaned the pull handles and bought the perfect color of paint for them. I put 4 days into that peice and about 60.00 into it. I didnt do the back because it was made to go against the wall. So i put about 16 hours into it and spent 100 total. Needed new legs too. I listed it for 300.00. So id make 12.00 per hour if it sells. Its oak and real nice. I get lowball offers on fb market for 150. I dont do all that work for 50 dollars. Ill burn it in my backyard firepit before i give it away like that.
Oh my!! I am in love with that blue and wood tone combo! The style transformation is amazing. 😍 A little tip for particle board screw hole repair (especially when moving isn't an option) - use a tiny brush and coat the inside of hole with wood glue, dip wood toothpicks into wood glue and insert into hole until it is filled snugly but not too tightly. Snip toothpicks off even with the surface and let glue dry at least 12 hours, 24 is preferable. Drill a small pilot hole before reinstalling screws. A sawdust and wood glue paste mixture works even better. Again, I LOVE this piece. I haven't watched ALL your videos, but I've watched a LOT and I think this has been my favorite transformation.
You are very articulate and your instructions were very clear and concise. I have learned a lot from your great refinishing tips. Your furniture transformations are always lovely and completely finished. You never cut corners and take care of every little detail.
You’re one of the best. BTW, the easiest way to sand those legs is to chuck it up in your drill and just spin it in your hand with the sandpaper or the medium of your choice. It’s just as fast as if it were in a lathe. Thank for the leg clamping tip.
I love your tutorials so much! And quite true how particle board pieces are 'hard sells' at thrift stores. Your MCM vibe refurb really turned out beautifully, :)
Love this! Was thinking of replacing my dingy laminated particle board en suite vanity but not now!. With a good sanding, paint inside and out, new legs and top...I'll have a beautiful vanity at a fraction of the cost of a new one plus keep it out of the landfill. Thank you!
Thank you. I have passed up some laminate furniture thinking it couldn’t look good. I have family going to college soon and needing basic furniture. This gives me more options 👍
I just love your attitude! I actually began crying, because I get so frustrated by trying to get started ~ you are refreshing, encouraging, and a brilliant restorer ~ thanks so much. This piece encourages me to try w navy. We never know how far sharing our example can go…..
We need a collab with Angie! You’re my two favorite channels to watch. Please collab with Angie! 😍 She’s mentioned you in her videos and how much she’d love a collab! 😊
Wow! Very nice! Thank you for sharing your knowledge of how to refurb faux wood, and the tips about what you like and do not like about paints and finishes.
I've just started watching... first off, hasn't your dog grown up into a beautiful girl!!?? She's so big.. but second .... I can't believe you will be able to turn this into something lovely: it looks so boring!!! Let's see what you come up with... Ooooh!!! BLUE!! I never expected that! It is a GORGEOUS colour! And wow! The whole thing turned out so dainty and elegant! It was such a lumpy chunk at the beginning! You truly have talent and vision! Another delightful and informative video. Have a lovely day, and thank you for sharing! kindest regards, k
This is fantastic! I have several old laminate/particle board pieces - bedroom furniture, desk, entertainment center, bookshelves, end tables - that I don't want to trash, but that really need new life. I searched, hoping to find something that would show me it's possible to refinish them, and your video is PERFECT! Thank you!
I found you because Christina raved about you. Wonderful information. I just bought a bedside table from marketplace that turned out to be laminate- I was so disappointed. A dog I was fostering pulled a piece off, I almost threw it away I wanted the add the slats too. Good call to glue them. So much information that I didn’t know This video makes me feel better.
I own a mechanic shop and I have also owned a body shop. 3M double-sided tape is some of the most stickiest stuff you will ever use. You should try it! I think you will fall in love with it for things like door handles and trim. Just make sure it's in the exact spot that you want it to be when you stick it down or you could destroy the wood pulling it back off. It sticks that well especially if you press on it. I hope it works well for you. Good luck with all your projects I wish you well!!!!!!!
Just a hint I picked up years ago when dealing with any door hinge screw pocket. Toothpicks with the pointy ends snapped off, are the perfect hole filler when dealing with reinstalling hardware. Just don't over-stuff the hole with too much material on particle type boards, owing to risk of unwanted expansion.
Thank you. I am going to redo my kitchen cabinet doors and they are this type of wood construction. Due to your comment about the breakdown of the wood if you remove hardware it makes it a little more challenging, but I am determined to give my galley kitchen an update from those 70's cabinets.
Bravo! One more tutorial in the can and one more piece of furniture saved from the trash heap. Pulling out the box-o-parts is a great reminder all on it's own about saving things for use in the future. :-)
Ms Scott, I really liked your video. I had just watched a video about refurbishing a laminated piece. The host reminded us that not everyone can afford expensive furniture; even used. I did a search on refurbishing cheap furniture and found you. When you mentioned Angie of Transcend Furniture Gallery I knew I was in the right place. I thought you were going to just slap a coat of paint on it. I was so wrong. I was impressed with your idea of adding the wood slats. It really brings the legs together with the top. I'm not a fan of painted furniture but the color you chose and the slat and leg treatment made this griffin unique and fine.
Hello Katie, a quick tip for refilling screw holes. Stuff toothpicks into the hole and squeeze in some wood glue. Once dry, trim off excess and sand to level.
Absolutely LOVE this transformation! I have done a few of these for myself (as a hobby, I don't flip) and you are right, there is absolutely no need for them to end up in the trash! I love the color you picked and the wood accents are perfect! not to mention the legs
This is so gorgeous! Love how you transformed this one. And you're such a good educator and great at encouraging others to follow your lead. Love it. I've been binge watching your older videos, even if I've seen everyone before, I love your videos😁👍👍. Together with Angie at transcend furniture gallery, your my favourite TH-camr. It must be the Canadian touch😁. Love from Sweden!
Thank you so much for video on the laminate furniture ! I have 2 night stands that someone gave me for $5 . I didn’t know what to do with them since they are laminate! You really inspired me! It’s so great to learn from you! Thank you so much ❤
What an amazing transformation; you’ve made this boring old piece elegant and into something I’m sure anyone would be proud to display in their home. Thank you for the great tips along the way, and not spinning your camera too fast and missing steps… as a newbie, learning as much as I can, this really helps the learning process 😊
Just picked up a small cabinet that I thought was all natural wood (I'm new to this lol) and turns out it was mostly particle board with a veneer. This video is super helpful!
Beautiful job, the color was great and redoing the base with the "new legs", beauty! Thanks for saving another piece, and educating us on saving MDF pieces!
You are very talented and a good educator. Your organization is admirable! That cabinet turned out beautifully. I think your first idea for using all the wood strips was the best. I think you should add the rest👍
Love this. I have a few of those old inexpensive bookshelves from back in the day. I might see if I can revamp them instead of buying new ones and trashing these! Thanks for the tips and inspiration.
Recent subscriber here. I watch A LOT of furniture refinishing videos but don't feel compelled to subscribe to too many. I like your style, though. You are a teacher without preaching. I've learned many things from you already so please keep it going! P. S. You mentioned Angie in this video. She was the first one I subscribed to. Love her! I'm from Atlanta, GA, U. S. but I guess I'm a Canadaphile. 😂 Thank you!
Found you had just the tutorial for me for some bookshelves with Silk Paint. Will do the necessary steps when I get to it. Thank you. This came out so nicely.
My end tables are the first items to be worked on when I get the garage back this spring. Laminated surfaces, and also $5 each at the local Restore. Take care and love that blue!
I love it!! I just thrifted a particle board desk, it had a bunch of stuff around it and was in worse condition than I initially thought when I went back the next day to pick it up. This was so helpful, hopefully I can make it look nice again ❤
Seeing some "cheap" laminate pieces get a makeover warms my heart. So many people are so snobbish about the "real wood" and scoff at laminate - when these piece usually have so much use in them once the outside gets refreshed:)
All I care about my furniture is that it stays together.
And mdf/particle board pieces, they don't like to do that.
Thank you for doing the bottoms! I hate when I see furniture flippers not do the bottoms of pieces or the backs. Especially when these pieces are being sold for upwards of $500, I feel like a fully finished piece of furniture just feels so much more refined!

You are so right.
@@stbam1965amen. Folks like to be negative. About silly things.
I love your work! I find it truly beautiful and heartwarming that you no longer sell, and give back to your community. Such an amazing woman ❤️

Thanks!!! Pro tip!

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos and how informative you make them, I learn so much that is helpful.
Your attention to detail is second to none. Yet another beautiful transformation.
You’re one of the best.

Thank for the leg clamping tip.
That is such a good tip, thank you!! I have so many legs I need to sand eventually.
I love your tutorials so much! And quite true how particle board pieces are 'hard sells' at thrift stores. Your MCM vibe refurb really turned out beautifully, :)
Fabulous! Your wood additions take it over the top!
Love this! Was thinking of replacing my dingy laminated particle board en suite vanity but not now!. With a good sanding, paint inside and out, new legs and top...I'll have a beautiful vanity at a fraction of the cost of a new one plus keep it out of the landfill. Thank you!
I love your ability to look beyond what is there and re-imagine a new look! Lovely!!
Please don’t ever stop sharing your knowledge and eye for detail with us Thanks for being you 💕✌️
All your projects, simple or elaborate, have class.
Thank you. I have passed up some laminate furniture thinking it couldn’t look good. I have family going to college soon and needing basic furniture. This gives me more options 👍
You really have a great imagination. I would never think up such great designs.
I love watching you and learning from you. Absolutely beautiful!
The wood detail on the door really pulled the piece together. It turned out beautifully (once again!). The piece is no longer a hard sell.
I just love your attitude! I actually began crying, because I get so frustrated by trying to get started ~ you are refreshing, encouraging, and a brilliant restorer ~ thanks so much. This piece encourages me to try w navy. We never know how far sharing our example can go…..
Adding the Wood Strip Details in my opinion gave the piece an added WOW factor, like Earrings with a Dress. Wonderful Work 👍👍
Excellent pointers at every stage. Really helpful!
We need a collab with Angie! You’re my two favorite channels to watch. Please collab with Angie! 😍 She’s mentioned you in her videos and how much she’d love a collab! 😊
I eagerly wait for my Saturday morning show!!!
I loved the explanation that you gave about the diference between all the kinds of wood, thank you so much Katie. What a beautiful peace you made!

This is really nice. It’s sleek and clean and modern. It’s a beautiful makeover, Katie. I love the addition of the legs and slats on the door.🌸
OMIGODDDDD Lady....you are SO creative !! Love this transformation ! ❤

This video makes me feel better.
Looks great Katie. I really like the wood on the doors matching the legs - great choice.
Katie, thanks for all the tips and tricks. Beautiful result!
Always great Katie! Also, this was an especially informational video full of tips - so many it would be hard to list them all! Thank you.

It's true that the piece didn't need the wood strip details but adding them made it even more beautiful.
The stained wood strips and new feet add such a nice touch to the piece. Certainly it has a MCM vibe. Thank you for posting this video!
Great job, Katie! I love this.
Love the blue color on this laminate cabinet!! Your black, white, and beige colors all look good, but I like the pop of a different shade at times.
Your project turned out beautiful
Bravo! One more tutorial in the can and one more piece of furniture saved from the trash heap. Pulling out the box-o-parts is a great reminder all on it's own about saving things for use in the future. :-)
Katie, you said the magic word, “beautiful.” That would convince me to look at an ugly duckling and picture a swan. ❤
Great result...as per usual for you.
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 Thank you

Thanks for the CLR tip. I've used vinegar in the past, not so good. Your pieces turn out so beautiful. Love your work
Carrying the leg color up onto the body with the decorative strips was a great call.
What an amazing transformation; you’ve made this boring old piece elegant and into something I’m sure anyone would be proud to display in their home. Thank you for the great tips along the way, and not spinning your camera too fast and missing steps… as a newbie, learning as much as I can, this really helps the learning process 😊
Such a beautiful flip. Love the color and I always love all the information you give. Your channel is my go to!
Very nice! Love the color combo. Perfect way to revamp partial board furniture.
Beautiful makeover. Such inspiration
Absolutely beautiful, colour and style! ❤
I love the colour you chose 😊
Just picked up a small cabinet that I thought was all natural wood (I'm new to this lol) and turns out it was mostly particle board with a veneer. This video is super helpful!

Beautiful job, the color was great and redoing the base with the "new legs", beauty! Thanks for saving another piece, and educating us on saving MDF pieces!
Gorgeous ❤ So glad you decided to add the stained wood strips to the door I think it really gave it a beautiful makeover
I liked your clamp tip for legs. I usually push the screws thru a box. As always, beautiful job.
Thanks! I going to keep this one, I got passed down dresser, I was going to dump it, I going to paint it 🤗
Hello Katie. Well done! Love the color. This video on Particle Board and Laminate is very informational. Thank you for sharing,🤗🤗🤗
Love this! I like the hinges better painted as they aren't as noticible if they were black.
I just spent $60 on Fusion paint samples. What an incredible assortment of complex, compelling colors.
You are very talented and a good educator. Your organization is admirable! That cabinet turned out beautifully. I think your first idea for using all the wood strips was the best. I think you should add the rest👍
Brava. This looks awesome. Thank you for the information and tips
I am so grateful for your video, Katie. I learned a lot. Thank you so much!!!
Love what you did! The wood strips and the legs really took it up and over!!!
Very nice! You are so clever! I love how you repurposed an ugly piece to a very nice and useful piece of furniture.
I loved all the information you gave on how to do laminate furniture. The best yet.
The wood accents really make the piece!
I was a huge Kascha fan until I found you! Love your work...such talent!
Amazing furniture flip as always.
Wow, amazing transformation!!
Omgggg that paint sprayer application is so dreamy!!!
What a transformation ❤ watching from Brantford ONT. Your s videos are so inspiring.
*Paint is so magical ...*
Stunning refurbish! I really love what you did on this piece.
Beautiful work Katie. I am going to refinish a desk that I thought about throwing out but I'll refinish it instead.
Stunning upgrade. Understatedly stunning. You have such creative vision.
Would you do the exact same steps for kitchen cabinets that are pressed wood from seventies with laminate on top? Thanks.
Hi Katie, I always learn so much from you, your work inspires me. You really turn out the most beautiful pieces thank you. Gale🙏
Love this. I have a few of those old inexpensive bookshelves from back in the day. I might see if I can revamp them instead of buying new ones and trashing these! Thanks for the tips and inspiration.
Amazing that was just a particle board piece! It looks great!!

That was really impressive. You are meticulous and skilled... and resourceful! I'm just wow-ed!
Love the lil screwdriver tool
wow! Looks like art deco meets scandanavian. love the finished look
