  • After running my DIY blog The Crafted Life for eleven years, it's safe to say that I've had my fair share of craft failures. And that rings especially true when it comes to Ikea furniture makeovers. But I can finally say that after all this time that I've cracked the code on how to paint Ikea furniture.
    This video covers my 4 easy steps to help your paint last for years to come!
    TIME MARKERS
    1:10: Why is There a Process?
    2:00: Step 1- Sand
    2:31: Step 2- Prime
    3:29: Step 3- Paint

    MATERIALS
    (affiliate links below)
    - 120 Grit Sandpaper: fine enough to give texture to the laminate without being so coarse that it will scratch your surface.
    - BIN primer: amzn.to/3rpzeIe
    - Paint: I will typically grab a quart of paint from the hardware store in eggshell finish.
    - Polycrylic: A sealant that I also get in a matching finish to my paint.
    - Roller, high quality brush and/or paint sprayer: amzn.to/450Au21

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yay! I'm so glad you're here! I do think BIN makes a spray primer but from what I've read, you would several coats. As for the sealant, I actually haven't tested the longevity of the spray version. I would assume again, it would take a few coats in order to get the same amount of coverage. Sorry I dont have a more specific answer!

      @TheCraftedLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much!! I highly recommend that blue because it's somehow even better in person! I can't say that I've ever tested vegan primers (sorry!), but I think the BIN primer might actually come in a synthetic version. Would be worth exploring for sure!

  • @bslbbd
    @bslbbd ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi! Great video! Sadly I live in a country that doesn’t have the BIN shellac primer, do you have other recommendations for primer? I wanna paint my Kallax. Our hardware stores here mostly have primers that are epoxy, water-based, acrylic, and lacquer. Thank you!

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great question! I unfortunately have really had the best luck with the shellac based primer, so I can't confidently give a secondary recommendation. But! Maybe you can talk to an employee and see if they have anything they could suggest for laminate surfaces. Always work trying a test patch to see! Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

  • @Marobar2000
    @Marobar2000 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your video, how many layers of primer do you recommend, is one enough?

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much!! So the piece I'm painting is white, I typically stick to one coat. If you're working with anything darker and are going to a lighter color, you might want to consider two coats just for better paint coverage. The BIN primer is thin and dries quickly, so you'll get a better sense after your first coat!

  • @ml9673
    @ml9673 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Thank you!! Fingers crossed I don't screw it up!! When you sand the first coat of the polycrylic, do you use the 120 grit sandpaper again?

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      YOU'VE GOT THIS!!! And yes you can! The sanding should just be light to remove any imperfections that may have happened in the process. You can see how you feel after one coat (depending on how much traffic the piece will see, etc).

    Thank you for your very informative video. I have IKEA JOKKMOKK dining chairs which according to the IKEA website, are solid pine. What would the preparation process be for this kind of surface? Thank you.

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So glad the video was informative! Is there any finish on the chair at all? If not, you can absolutely still follow these steps. The materials would all still work fine! If there's a finish (or shiny covering), you may just have to sand a bit better in the beginning to remove it.

    Any tips for keeping the pre-drilled holes free from primer/paint/sealer when painting furniture that has yet to be assembled?

    • @RachelSmiththecraftedlife
      @RachelSmiththecraftedlife 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes!! First, you want to make sure your roller or brush isn't overly saturated! I would also suggest rolling up a bit of painters tape and placing inside the hole. You wont want so much tape that it stick out and leaves a ring from the paint, so just a small amount. For the most part, at long as you aren't applying a TON of paint in that spot, you should be okay!

    Hi. I am currently following your video to paint my Kallax. I have don’t steps one and two (sanding and priming) My question is, do I need to do two coats of primer? I’ve currently done one and it seems to of covered well. Thank you! 😃

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Lucy! How fun!! If you've covered the entire surface, and your base won't bleed through your paint color, you should be okay to move forward. 2 coats will always give you more coverage, but you could get away with just one if you're shorter on time or energy

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much! With a roller, you'll need two coats with the third being for touch ups. And for wait time, I did each step on a different day to allow time for the paint to cure. You can prime one day, paint the next. I would let the paint cure for at least a few days to help with long term durability!

      @TheCraftedLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hi! Great question! Polycrylic does make a matte finish, but theres still a bit of sheen to it. I think it depends on how matte you want your pieces to be. Could be work exploring finishes since you'll definitely want to seal your work at the end!

      That's a great question! I think a shellac based primer will give you the best results. You might run into some scratches/wear with the water based. I guess it really depends on how much use the item you paint will get, but I can't fully recommend it (I haven't fully tested it in my own home). I wonder if there are other brands, but still shellac?

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry I'm just seeing your comment! I unfortunately don't think the finish would be enough. One way to think about it is if the paint doesn't have the primer to stick to, anything on top of it would just slide off the same

    • @TheCraftedLife
      @TheCraftedLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! You're really just scuffing up the surface (instead of trying to remove all the coating or smooth out like you would on a traditional wooden surface). If you rub your hand across the surface after a light sanding, you should be able to cover the surface of your hand with the dust. But you don't have to do more than that! Hopefully that helps!
