I’m 68, been doing the keto diet for two years. Got rid of my diabetes, my weight is now what it was in my 20s along with my waist. I dropped 6 inches off my waist. My blood pressure went from 150/90 to 106/65. Even got rid of my acid reflux that I had for decades that only took two weeks. Haven’t even had heartburn in two years. So I wanted to do the same for my pups. My Vet talked me out of raw dog food. And from what you said they can have salmonella on their tongue and it doesn’t affect them. And I’m thinking well what about me. I’ve had enough dog saliva in my mouth To probably have dog DNA. Anyway I can’t afford some of those high priced dog foods and I found one that seems reasonable in price definitely and in contents also. Victor Nutra Pro, 92% protein, 1% from vegetables, and only 7% from carbs. It’s made in Texas I’m wondering if you ever heard of it.

On water: whether it is filtered or flown in from the purest source in the world. It costs so little to wash out the bowl and put fresh water in that bowl. With few exceptions, American tap water is more than adequate for hydrating your dog.

@@Rebecca-qx1et so true, my dog gets fresh water at least twice a day with multiple bowls in different rooms but he still prefers to drink straight from the sink or bathtub faucet. He can't reach to drink by himself so he sits right in front of the sink or bathtub and signals ( he eyes the faucet then looks at me repeatedly) and asks for me to turn it on and to pick him up so he can drink. Honestly I think it's super cute that he drinks from the tap so I'm happy to oblige.

They get rinsed and refilled several times daily. I wash them out but with just hot water because I don't want them drinking any soap residue. My pets aren't cork sniffy enough to request Perrier or Evian, they're fine with tap water. My labs will happily drink from a bird bath, puddle in the yard, or swamp, so I don't think they're that fussy to be honest. One of my cats will sit by the sink for an hour waiting for me to turn the faucet on before he'll drink out of a bowl :)

Though, I keep hearing about how wild canines (hyenas, wild dogs, etc) would not have access to grains. These wild dogs do get grains though the prey animals they eat. If they scavenge an antelope or something of that nature, it will be full of grains and grass it ate prior to death. I own reptiles and we gut load for similar reasons. Just a thought, carbs are not so bad but I agree that they can be limited. Thanks again

EXCELLENT video. Thank you very much for this great information. I found with my GSD, when I changed from kibble to raw, a drastic decrease in the amount of poop generated, also less odor, and healthier consistency. It may seem odd to focus on her poop, but I believe a lot can be derived about the health of our pups by their waste. Also, from the time I brought her home at six months (as a rescue) she constantly wanted to eat her poop, always a race to pick it up before she got it - since going raw she shows no interest in eating it. Anyway, sorry about the not so glamorous topic, but I did want to share my experience if it encourages someone else to try the raw diet, I'm totally sold on it.

He said it was probably an allergy to chicken and or wheat, at the time I was feeding a lamb and rice kibble so we doubted it was chicken... He suggested to put her on a brand called Orijen which is specifically designed for dogs with allergies. I choose the all fish and vegetable which was grain and filler free. Let me tell you this, about 3 weeks after feeding her Orijen, her hair grew back, the rashes were gone and to top it off her poop was less each day because there was no fillers in her food. She had more energy, better concentration on my commands. Her coat was shiny and always looked clean even without having a wipe down. Which if anyone is reading this with a staffordshire or pitbull (which is a derivative breed of the staffordshire) if your dog is having skin irritations of any kind, first change their diet and second is to not bath them with shampoos, a simple wipe down with a warm wet clothes is best for these breeds as their skin can be irritated by shampoos. Hope this helps and please look into Orijen, they are not well known by the masses but it is one of the most outstanding dog food producers using only quality ingredients which the price per bag suggests, it is not cheap at all but the benefits outlay the costs!

I know we don't really have a choice in the matter as most of us aren't filthy rich.. but I hope for a day where the organic and antibiotic/hormone free beef is at the price that the current conventional beef is at. Whether we like it or not, given it's their entire diet if you feed raw, those antibiotics and glyphosate/pesticides/etc in the grains conventional animals are fed has it's toll on any gut/digestive system.

I buy good kibble when it's on sale at Grocery Outlet. They often get Nutro MAX which is good quality. I only use that in my treat pouch for training/reward. Sometimes I use a bit to fill out their meals which are 5 small meals a day. He eats when I eat (and bits of what I eat). I make my own dog food. I slow simmer cook whole grocery store chickens or turkey in season, separate the fat (so I can control the amount Spitz (my dog) gets), separate the meat when it falls apart, then reboil the bones until soft and grind those to a paste in a food processor with baked eggshells (baked to kill potential bacteria). He gets 65% protein, the rest is vegetables (peas, green beans, kale, spinach, broccoli, carrots sweet potatoes, wild rice mix and or oatmeal for a carb, and some fruit (generally blueberries, dried cranberries and or other fruits). I am not comfortable with raw meat. There are too many variables for bacteria development and too little control from the farm/slaughterhouse to the grocery store. Also I am on a fixed income so that colors my approach.

Potatoes have protein. All plants have proteins. Animals have protein because the eat the plants or eat the plant eaters. Thanks for your opinion on bagged foods. My dogs do great with the salmon and sweet potatoe kibble mixed with broths, fresh meat, rice, veggies and fresh herbs/spices.

    • @RobertCabralDogs

Thanks for the info! the amount of protein contained in plants has a different amino profile and the basic levels of eating enough protein from plant sources compared to animal sources is monumental. find how much protein is in 1 ounce of beef = 7 grams vs. how much protein is in one ounce of broccoli (example) = 1 gram. Which means you need to eat 7x the amount of broccoli to get the same amount of protein.. food for thought!

For people thinking in giving 50/50 mix of raw and kibble is important that the kibble is not hight soy o pea protein. The soy will ferment in the stomach and the raw food will bloat and upset youre dog stomach.

I also think overall health has to do with the breed. I find mixed breeds to be heartier and less susceptible to getting sick.

@@iamkyleclimer Actually i did watch it and found it interesting. However, you'll find arguments from legit veterinarians that will disagree. I had a vet tell me "buy what you can afford, more dogs on pedigree and cheap chow than dogs on expensive foods and home cooked food and they are thriving and in better health than the health fanatics. Do you think adoption agencies give the best?...If it causes more damage than good why are they eating crap and adopting a bottom feeding sick dog?"..In any event im on the fence but i do give my dogs the cheapest of the highest grade dry dog food. I give Diamond Naturals and Costco premium. They look great and are in excellent health. I blame poor breeding practices for the overall health of dogs. Take a mutt and you can feed it whatever. Now take a pedigree and they get sick over a foul smell.

Good to see your opinion on this. I am a vet nurse and always had a special interest in animal nutrition and dog behaviour. I have been in England for 8y and over there most of the trainers were against raw feeding as they claimed the dogs would get hiper and uncontrollable because of the high levels of protein. To me that always sounded b.s. but I am not a trainer so I wouldn't argue the behaviour side of it. Health wise I always believed raw was the best but couldn't speak to much about it because of my colegues were against it and they almost questioned my nursing habilities just because I agreed with raw, or a most natural feeding.
No I am back in Portugal and I am fiding people are more open here re this subject and I have been investing quite a bit of time on both my passions.

Raw feeding is the best way to go. However it must be balanced. Bone is essential for calcium. I always suggest adding fruit and veg one at a time as some dogs can be intolerant to some. Supplements are sometimes necessary. Heart is a muscle . Organ meat should be around 10% of the dogs diet. I buy human grade meat from a catering butchers and I only get the ground chicken carcasses for the bone from a raw dog food suppliers. To much bone will course constipation. Ratios vary from dog to dog. My dog cannot eat any cabbage, spinach etc. Always be aware of SPD ( Salmon Poisoning Disease ) it only affects canines. Regards Lamb, they call it lamb but it is usually mutton .Great video. Thank you Robert.

My local oriental market sells big bags of frozen whole mullet, head/guts/ everything, really inexpensive. I pressure cook then and purée with my immersion blender to add to both raw and cooked foods as a supplement. Mullet is an oily fish and very plentiful and sustainable. Good fats and trace minerals.
I also raise cuy (guinea pig) as an efficient small meat stock for humans and our pets. Perfect for small and medium sized dogs!

I’d like to add that cuy is a protein few dogs have demonstrated an allergy to. It’s technically a rodent, if that helps. Very lean, so be aware that you’ll probably need to add fats, perhaps with an oily fish. The bone ratio on them seems good to me, but please do your due diligence if you want to try it out. ✌️

I started making my dog food about 3 years ago because my (now) 21 year old chihuahua and my (then) 16 year old Chinese Crested were both mostly toothless. The Crested has since passed, but my Maximum Dawg Minimum Packaging boy is still going strong. I was giving the rest of my pack (The Beloved Mutts) a little and noticed they were looking better.
