What you feed your dog can make a huge difference on a dog's health, with mental and physical. I address :
simple things to look for on your dog food ingredients
the importance of protein
supplementing
pricing of dog food vs raw feeding
does cooking your dog's food. destroy the nutrition
things to add to your dog food
simple sugars
carbohydrates
grain free and DCM
... and so much more!

Hardly any trainers take the time and effort to talk about dog nutrition. Great job Robert!
Extremely valuable advice basically saving so much in vet bills and also the actual life span of your loved Dog! Thank you.
Rather than add fiber like psyllium husks to my dogs diet when he was having loose stools (on a raw diet of muscle meat, raw meaty bone and secreting organs) I just upped his raw meaty bone and it completely resolved that. Immediately, his stools were solid and perfect and have remained that way since. Chicken feet work great.
My dog wasn’t even liking the premium kibble. So we taste tested her with samples and she chose the dehydrated raw food. She’s no longer picky . We also give her frozen raw beef bone occasionally . The issue with raw is the need for a whole additional freezer and no space for it.
Great discussion, Robert! I’m glad you took the time to go over it! 🐺🔥🇺🇸
Much appreciated
Cooper's all raw breakfast;
Duck neck.
Kangaroo meat.
Green lamb tripe.
Sardines for Omega 3 fatty acids.
Lamb offal blend of lung, liver kidney, spleen with some heart added for CO Q 10, taurine & zinc.
Raw pastured egg with shell.
Grass fed water Buffalo keffir for the gut mirobiome.
Bone broth with apple cider vinegar, turmeric & ginger.
Depending on what I have, I do a mixture of different organic ingredients like, cranberries, blueberries green beans, zucchini, carrots, kale, celery, spinach, Broccoli, butternut squash, pumpkin, sprouted chia seeds, coconut oil, cilantro, parsley, shitake & maitake mushrooms, Atlantic sea kelp, Hawaiian spirulina etc.
Main protein source (muscle meat) is changed every meal between Kangaroo, Venison, Beaver, Bison, Elk, Quail, rabbit, beef, lamb, goat, duck, pork and pheasant.
Offal source is changed every meal as well.
Wild caught, sardines, mackeral or salmon with most meals for Omega 3's.
I avoid chicken and turkey for Cooper as it causes his skin to break out a little bit.
I alternate goat, sheep and water Buffalo keffir.
Raw meaty bones like Duck, lamb, beef & pork necks, Kangaroo tails, Beaver tails, briskets duck feet etc.
Excellent reveal on dog food products. It's imperative to get the connection between what our dogs eat and their health. Thanks so much. Robert.
You don't need a supplement to firm up/have good stools, you just need raw bone! (Non weight bearing bones.) I hope this chat inspired people to do the RESEARCH necessary to make their own diets. I have been raw feeding for almost a decade now and I never stop learning. You have to know what you're doing. People can very easily think they're doing the right thing but be doing more harm than good. Unfortunately that's just ammo for vets who disagree with homemade diets.
Appreciate the info - I did learn alot! Thank you, next I'll be signing up for your monthly program. Yay!
Great conversation. Thank you.
My pups core go to is generally:
Bone-in Chicken Backs marinated in ACV & Turmeric
Chicken Hearts, with Kale, Apple & Carrots as his sides
Additives for Medicinal or Seasonal Use
- peppermint, oil of oregano, crushed garlic, crushed ginger, Ceylon cinnamon, bentonite clay, coconut oil, ground flaxseed/oil, ginseng,
I order directly from factory through my butcher, for the best volume pricing. However, this method can cause issues when fridge/freezer space is at a premium. To overcome this, I use 5-gallon pails from Home Depot and make a 50/50 water & ACV brine, it works very well as a natural and healthy preservative and does wonders for the coat!
Thanks! Good information and ideas for feeding dogs. I will be sharing this with my dog friends!
My dogs have never eaten that kibble poison, it can also cause your dogs stomach to turn and twist a gut.
I feed raw eggs, chicken, beef, rabbits, deer, pork, moose, elk and more. I source my meat and can feed for less than the cost of cheap kibble.
Note- I do cook some meat with vegetables and oatmeal to mimic the stomach contents of prey animals.
The vets are always amazed at the health of my dogs.
I think your supposed to cook the eggs.
No need to cook the eggs, but I do boil some . I feed shell and all.
I also feed cook and raw Arctic char fish ground
DANG! I just missed this! I keep forgetting that this is EASTERN Standard Time! I had a lot to contribute to the conversation today! I'm sorry! We just got a new puppy and had an "interesting" discussion with the Vet who did the "72 hour Wellness check" about dog food that was pretty laughable -- Purina, Science Diet and Royal Canin--telling me that grain free makes dogs have heart disease! I'm very educated and this was a joke to me. Foods with GMO corn, wheat, soy, etc. she is telling me is healthier for a dog than organic or non gmo, raw or high grade grain free kibble. She is not a nutritionist but backing up her claims by the dogs she sees and a website she recommends that has scientists that supposedly have "no agenda". Of course I do know that Vets are subsidized by those companies I mentioned. Much love to Robert and the family~Will be joining your membership! Peace and Love~Sheri The Organic Pet Lady~
Yeah, I found out from an actual DVM nutrionist that most Vets get a 4 hour lesson in nutrition at college. And it's most often given by Nestlé! They won Purina, Alpo, Fancy Feast etc...And you wonder why they always give you those samples? SMH.
Fyi, there is a problem with the percentages listed on the bag of kibble. The percentages are measured as the wet weight of meat and the dry weight of the flour. Once the biscuit (cookie) is baked and the water is lost from the meat the real percentage of the meat in that biscuit is much lower than stated.
In the UK meat for dogs must be fit for human consumption. I buy 80/10/10 (80% muscle meat, 10% bone 10% organs) for £1 per pound (454 grams).
I fed both Orijen puppy dog food and top it with honest kitchen dog food also bone both to rehydrate it Need to use the kibble to hand feed in training After a year move to more of a Raw diet
Orijen is a good kibble but it's still processed food. I wouldn't feed my dog kibble every day if I were you. Orijen contains too many legumes.
Introduced my year old GSD rescue to raw with a chicken leg which he refused to eat, but ate the 🐓 meat cooked. He enjoyed raw beef 🥩 Do I keep offering the raw chicken or cook it to give along with raw beef & organ meats? New to raw.
Hi Robert. Its Zhahn-Pam from Team Peaches Dog Training and Education. One of the first things that I ask clients is what do you feed you puppy/dog. Food affects the brain and body functions. I have 5 dogs whom I call, The Furry 5. The Furry Five are Peaches - Border Collie/Jack Russel, Shay- Lab /Pit Bull Terrier, Daisy - Rhodesian Ridgeback/Egyptian Pharoh Hound, NIkki - Australian Cattle Dog/Catahoula, Prince - American Fox Hound. They have a 2-1 eat to fast feeding schedule. They are fed once a day for 2 days and they fast 24 hours. I avoid commercial "foods", I cook for them. They are fed combinations of brown rice, ground beef, beef pork and chicken livers. Beef tongue and heart and other organ meats, chicken gizzards and hearts. Ground turkey and giblets. Salmon heads, sardines, oysters, mackerel. Whole eggs including the ground shells. Kale, carrots, pumpkin, white mushrooms. Coconut oil.
??? Cheri's link please???
My breeder (GSD) advised the following :
80% muscle meat
5% liver
5% other excreting organs
10% bone
listed some fruit and veg as optional
Supplements ACV, coconut oil, fish oil, golden paste (Tumeric) optional.
I make my own mince using the above ratios and add the golden paste to each meal
Still using a grain free & meal free kibble for a percentage of daily food for training treats.
Thanks for sharing
Great talk Robert. Best to feed once a day... snacks and treats will spike insulin
I don't feed my pets any kibble at all. My dog gets ground up meat bones & organs. A
She also gets edible meaty bones like lambs necks, duck wings etc. Also eggs , salmon, sardines, chopped veggies and I make my own kefir at home (similar to yogurt but with more probiotics) which she loves. She's in great shape. Something I also do which the vet is always impressed with is I brush her teeth every other day. It really makes a big difference.
Love eggs
I have been cooking for my dogs for over 7 years. They love it and they are very healthy, and the vet is super happy with their health
Doberman and Husky, all day active, raw chicken quarters with bone, raw eggs, cottage cheese, frozen vegetables in blender with rice and water, leftovers to keep fridge clean over food daily. Alternate meats monthly to a few days beef, or tilapia, after thanksgiving buy cheap turkeys, dear-meat. Avoid weight-bearing bones from deer, never feed cooked bones.
Excellent advice and something new is always learned here. Some thoughts. What are the toxin levels such as pesticides, antibiotics, etc. for proteins such as beef and chicken if not making sure they are stated as free from or being at least organic/grass fed? What are the potential consequences of any added ingredients if they were previously sprayed with glyphosate prior to harvest or are genetically modified? Yes, it gets expensive but my pup is worth it. I always make sure all proteins are guaranteed to be 'clean', so to speak before putting in her dish. This includes labeled as organic, pasture raised, grass fed and finished, etc. for everything.
My dog's breeder, who comes from a family of breeders, and has been breeding for 40 years, told me that the fillers in food are actually a good thing. She also told me not to feed grain-free food. I was impressed by her knowledge overall, and tend to believe this.
You might want to look into Dr Karen Becker DVM. She's a animal nutrionist.
Thanks, very informative. My palms of my hands have so many callus that it frels like knuckles
The whole I gave my dog kibble and they lived till 18 is like people saying well grandpa smoked a pack a day and lived till he was 90.
I like pre-made raw, I can source easily. I buy from Oma’s Pride,Darwin’s and BJ Rawpetfood. All have balanced and complete and use AFFCO standards. One other thing I believe in is fish oil. I have a Puggle that was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. I happen to use Omega Benefit Canine. It took away her limp…totally! I have seen it work on older Labrador’s with arthritis too,
Sounds great!
Robert, I've been feeding my field lab the same beef kibble you feed your dogs since he was a puppy. He is about to be 5 years. The only thing I add is salmon oil, and kelp. He's been extremely healthy, thin and strong. I get compliments on his appearance all the time. One thing I note is if you add up the percentages on the bag (ie 23% protein, 13% Fat etc) you'll find the percentages do not add up to 100%. What's missing? Carbs. I find it interesting that the manufacturers do not list the percentage of carbs. While my dog food is expensive, it is 650 calories per cup as compared to 400 or less per cup for other less expensive dog food. So please factor that into your cost. Your feeding much less of this high calorie food than the less expensive foods.
Have 2 dogs. One is a working dog. They eat only raw meat eggs and organic raw fruit and some raw veggies. Never been to a vet and the teeth are white. They don’t have a bad smell. I don’t bath them with any kind of shampoo for years. Only clean the mud with warm or cold water if needed
Can we get the link to Sherry's website?
Appreciate you talking about this. I always used Costco kibble and I know that my dogs' health suffered because of it.
Good Info Robert. I've fed a whole prey diet for 20 years. No grains, no veggies. No supplements. Everything they need is in the diet. Dogs need the bone. No complex recipes, keep it simple. I have hunting beagles they are very very active. I have 4 that are over 15 yrs old and still going strong. My friends beagles are dead by 8 yrs. Most vets dont know shit about nutrition, they push the brands that they get kickbacks from. Allergies are not only from the protein but how the protein was processed and what the protein was fed. ( if the chicken is fed gmo grain) Wheat and Corn is the most genetically modified. Which is a problem for humans and animals. Most kibble is poison. Just like most packaged food in the store is poison. I always give my dog clients a crash course in feeding raw.
I make kibble for a living high and medium quality but when I had irish wolfhounds I fed a mixture of kibble and raw 100% raw is better but when you have 100kg dog's it very expensive if I had small to medium dog's I would go 100% raw but with very large breeds 50-50 is still better than pure kibble also with giant breeds calcium supplements are needed
I do a mix of all kinds of different stuff like raw cuts, organs, veggies, chicken legs stuff like that and whats good for them and the kibble i mix in is usually victor but i recently switched to valuepak to save a lil $
Hey~This new puppy we got came with Victor Premium. It's a good food that I'd never heard of for kibble. Valupak sounds interesting. I'll take a look. I'm a huge fan of raw with kibble.
Taurine is found in hardworking muscle meat like heart, tongue, gizzard etc. my BARF DIY diet I feed my GSD has this in. I do not like supplementing the diet if I can find it naturally.
I can’t find Sherri’s website. Can you post it or link it?Tyvm
What are people's thoughts on ACANA dog food products?
You all should watch the documentary Dog Foo(le)d, lots of info about the dog food industrie, that will open your eyes and make good decisions about what to feed your dogs... I have been feeding raw according my own recipe to my malinois for 40 years for a good reason and still do so.
I feed Acana pet food but i dont really like the way her coat is.... What can i give to my dog to help with her coat. For example i watched the breed judging of malinois and i realise how much better their coat is. What should i give to my dog?
Add fish oils or consider a raw diet plan.
@@RobertCabralDogs Thank you very much Robert!!!🙂
This is amazing already and I'm only 2.5 minutes in!
Robert can you recommend a good treat for traning??
I use the visionary free dried food. bit.ly/visionary-robert20
Good one
What I've learned is that wolves do not eat the stomach contents of their prey. They will/may eat the stomach, but I've read that they will actually empty the stomach before they eat it. So, wolves eat little to no vegetables. They do eat berries, but apparently no veggies. Just an observation...
My being a Pet Nutritionists I agree with most of what Robert said. Read read your labels. I can't stress that enough. Watch you % of carbs and which most bags of dog food does not have that listed. But you can take your protein % + Fat% + Moisture% + ash% and if that is not on the bag the normal range is 7% add all those together -100 and you will get you % of carbs. If it is higher than 30-33% you are giving more carbs to your dog than protein and that will cause obesity in dogs. . Dogs and cats need a higher protein. But read your labels.
Thanks. That’s great info.
@@RobertCabralDogs uw any time.
* By comparison, Cat food is higher in protien and Taurine by volume, respectively.
This information from Drs Foster and Smith
Hi Robert. Which bones are best for German Shepherds, please? I in Australia and am watching this a day later.
Go to your local butcher Morrow or knucklebones
Chicken neck and feet are great.
Raw Goat bones are also great. Softer than beef bones.
@@accufab much harder to find
@@kaylonsinghurst yes I feed chicken necks and turkey necks.
Feeding raw meat with veg was the best decision I made for my dog. She has varied meats with a chicken carcass (ground) base. My high drive Collie has 480grams daily. I adjust by 10 grams depending on if she gains any weight. I use steak mince as I use normal fat lamb and lambs hearts so she gets fat but not high fats.
Rough collie?
Lucky dog!
How do y'all feel about eukanuba for a 8mo rednose pit? Just wondering ..? Thanks 👍 (I also add a nugget sized boiled chicken livers for dinner)
Question: Is the 55-70% fat in Vitality too much for a regular house dog? My dogs do get a decent amount of exercise and their weight has remained perfect and near perfect. One of mine has been throwing up a lot and we've ruled out a lot of things and the vet had questioned his diet and the fat content (he was more wondering if we were giving him fatty cuts of steak etc). I was asking what a 'normal' fat content should be and they'd mentioned 25% on average, more for active, but didn't have a specific answer. I know your dogs are on a different level than the normal house dog and I am wondering if in your research you'd developed an opinion or found an answer on this?
What should I give my pup while teething hard rope toys only last minutes and I keep hearing chewing bones is dangerous she's a 17week old Mallinois
Turkey neck frozen. Frozen banana.
@@RobertCabralDogs thanks alot for your time and videos your vids have got my pup so well trained so far between the commands and info on food been a great help for us
I don’t understand why anyone would feed someone they love processed food.
Ive seen some of the most athletic dogs on earth that get feed from tractor supply
the best diet for people and dogs is the food that has the least negative effects on the Environment!
Nestle, Mars & Colgate are the biggest pet food manufacturers. Anything after 'salt' ònly has to be 1% of the total.
I heard anything after "salt" in the ingredients list is less than 1%, so could just as easily be .01%.
@@hardknoxblount that is very true. It's called the salt divider. Actually it is less than 1%
I make my dogfood now again that is the best you can do and I buy my meat from the grocery store you get a better deal I use to buy meat paddies from the dog store that was soo fady and he gained so much weight now I can control the fad he gets but lots of meat and other good stuff he looks so much better and he got his waistline back and it’s cheaper and healthier he loves it and is so good there is no corn in it there are lots to choose from it and on the side he gets a turky neck that he likes
Agreed, you just can't go cheap and stay away from China vitamins packs which are in most common dog kibble. Only food I'd ever feed my Corso's are raw organ, bone, multi protein sources, (mostly grass fed or organic) organic fruits, grains and lastly New Zealand kibble. Won't mention brands but NZ dog food in general is so much better than almost all of the other foods available. It's holistic, eco-friendly and eco-sustainable. The "vitamin packs" don't come from China, but are made from NZ factories. So, you know exactly what you're feeding your dog. Best in the world. By the way...my last mastiff's lived to be 14.5 and 15+ years old.
Food allergies are not common for most dogs. A lot of allergies are mostly external. Meaning related to grass, and other things. Also to much protein can be a bad things, they have found protein content over 40% was found to be to much for dogs. Also chicken meal will not have beaks or feathers. By product meal yes. Corn is not a issue at all in dogs and is not a main reason for allergies. I know lots of dogs that where on costly dog food with major issues. Changed to Purina or something else with corn and no issues. I know a doodle right now that had that same issue. Not everything is cut and dry and you need to feed the dog in front of you. My dog would do so bad on protein over 30% and you know what, thats fine. I am feeding her to how her body is and not a trend. The one small one Is pedigree dog food and has its place. Not everyone can pay for a $100 dog bag of dog food.
I supplement my dogs kibble with scrambled egg which was great until the price of eggs exploded. Uhm if your dog has issues with allergies eggs are about the worst thing, fyi.
Origen origional
the vegan thing mostly comes from animal welfare basis(i.e. factory farming), these issues largely come from land ownership (most can't keep/grow their own food anymore, animal or plant-based and we do eat far too much meat (food in general: exercise) and we produce ridiculous amounts of waste), veganism isn't a nutrition based argument, it also promotes plastic use.
Our health has been F**ked by eating poor food options, too much food and not enough exercise.
Plant proteins are not the same as animal proteins, omega's for example, are very much animal oil, it's very hard to find in plants & the only one I can think of is hemp seed which is essential for brain function. (I have had vegan folk complaining about brain function but refusing to take omega oils to help because they are largely animal-based.
Vitamin d overdoses can also come from egg shells due to them being 'fortified' if they are added on top of a vit d fortified food.
I do feed mine kibble, however, they get top-ups of proteins from meats/eggs etc such as heart, and liver which I cook as training treats and they get extra fats from roast trays, 'leftovers' etc, I'll boil bones into either stock or bone marrow (I use old advent calendar trays to create bone marrow training treats) and cod liver oil supplement.
Can not read ? TOO small
Put a steak and rotted animal in front of a dog . They will take the rotted meat every time. The dog is different and can eat different food. They are designed to live off the scraps of nature. Giving them this so called perfect for them isn't needed. Take that extra money you wanted to spend on that high priced food and go to the butcher shop and get some bones that they cut up. We need probiotics and we don't get enough. Don't make that mistake with your dog!
Yes, you use pumpkin to fix your dogs loose stool, but you have to be careful because it has vitamin D.
Wow, I never knew that, really?
@@luckydubefan808 yes, it works great
@@jeffk464 but I did not know about the vitamin D
Vitamin D from whole foods sources would be next to impossible to overdose on. The bioavailability and metabolization of food vitamins are very different from synthetic vitamins. It is very easy for animals or people to overdose on synthetic vitamins, but not vitamins from whole food sources.
Your dog would never eat enough pumpkin to ever come remotely close to overdosing on vitamin d. He specifically said that in the video. Its supplements that are a concentrated amount of a vitamin that can be an issue
Bro you’re bragging so much I got to have you on fast speed talk
Talking for ten minutes and hasent said anything about what food
He was talking to critical thinkers that can take this information and figure out whats best for their dog. He's educating so you actually understand what the dog needs and then you can figure it out yourself, rather than just saying "buy this". If you listen to all this and still dont get it, maybe you just have to spend more time learning about dog nutrition before it starts to click for you.
FYI- They are not Eskimos they are called Inuit.
From the Alaska Native Language Center "Inuit" is now the current term in Alaska and across the Arctic, and "Eskimo" is fading from use. The Inuit Circumpolar Council prefers the term "Inuit" but some other organizations use "Eskimo".
Eh, I knew a Inuit guy that wasn't ok with that term either. I think Inuit is a specific tribe. Its super tough to know what to call native americans.
Image result for eskimo derogatory to inuit canada
People in many parts of the Arctic consider Eskimo a derogatory term because it was widely used by racist, non-native colonizers. Many people also thought it meant eater of raw meat, which connoted barbarism and violence.A
No the natives in the south called the natives of the north Eskimos.. they called them that because they ate their meat raw, as there is no wood to cook with past the Arctic Circle.
When America bought Alaska the name stuck because we didn't know what it meant.... but the southern natives knew, and laughed their asses off because it stuck. You see they hated the northern natives and use to enslave them to make things to sell to the Russians.
I don't get why you don't mention the carbon footprint of the food. if we all have super healthy dog but end civilization prematurely due to global warming what is the benefit of that ?!
That is a lie, a WEF globalist propaganda.
How about your contribution to global warming? If you didn't waste your time watching TH-cam videos and asking really dumb questions you could reduce your carbon footprint quite easily.
If global warming was half of the threat they say it is then Obama wouldn’t have just bought that multi million dollar home if it’s going to be underwater in a few years. Ask yourself why the banks are buying up all the waterfront. If you’re really worried about your carbon footprint then there’s a simple solution…
@@TOMinPDX I laughed so hard at your comment. Why did you go at the guy so hard? 😂
@@truegrizzlesfan2292 Because it's a dumb and irrelevant question. Is Robert to know the greenhouse emissions of all the dog foods available? Who knows that information besides who is watching this channel that needs to know? This is a a channel about dogs not the environment. I bet Nimrod's carbon footprint is way higher than my dog's, he should stfu & go find Greta if he wants to complain about carbon footprints, which most of the worlds population have no concern about just the wealthy first world populations who have little else to concern themselves with.
