While researching reputable golden retriever breeders in the USA, the majority, if not all of them choose to feed their liters a raw diet over dry food. Some go as far as making it a requirement via contract that the puppy is fed a raw diet even while they go to their new homes and is not neutered/spayed until 2 or even 4 years old.

I give my GSD pup of 4 months the mix of everything raw+homecooked+kibble. I want to get her used to these options just in case i dont have time to get certain goods. She gets kibble for training time around 150-200g/day. The rest 80% is whole foods and home grown produce. I wouldn't bother putting too much veggies in the meal. Raw beef is full of vitamins and nuritions (i buy affordabl free range beef from the local market) i also give her raw 2 carrots to chew on a week.

I had the same problem with my Dane after about 2 years on raw. He started to sometimes refuse the food or I had to really coax him to eat. So I started to lightly cook the meat and he has been really good since the change to cooked. He also refuses food that has any additional nutrients added however I have finally found a product line that he will eat mixed in I found it through the pet summits that both of these professionals have participated in. He has only had that empty stomach puke once or twice since cooked and never since providing the supplements in his food.

My dog used to do this and we would “solve” it by feeding many small meals throughout the day. It was a little nuts how often he would eat. However after years of doing this he started to develop other issues so we recently totally flipped out tactics.
He now eats one big meal in the afternoon and maybe a small meal later. It’s 100% intermittent fasting so his eating window is shorter. He gets fed at different times (we don’t stick to schedules) but he’s doing loads better and no more morning puking. I think his stomach was producing too much stomach acid because he was constantly having to work to break down small meals and treats throughout the day.
He does complain a bit about not getting a treat after every potty trip but if I throw a toy for him he forgives me lol
      Hope your pup gets better!

The thing is, dogs of my breed look in great body condition on a good kibble. I have been developing balanced homemade recipes for both cooked organic diets and organic raw using whole chickens ground up (doing it for 17 years). I tested them initially over 3 years including during pregnancy and puppyhood and I had other breeders participate in the feeding trials. I did not do raw with the puppies. What I found was that on the cooked homemade diets, they looked great, but no better than on the best kibble. However, they didn’t look as good on raw even though the raw diet was fully balanced. Plus doing raw WELL is really hard. So it was the most time consuming for no benefit in condition. I did not go by AAFCO guidelines, but I used NRC numbers. Just my observation with my breed

Have you tried seeing how he goes on meat only to see if that can starve off the yeast, at least one month i would imagine. If you feed the right organs, you should be able to cover everything needed, especially if only short term. Maybe keep it super simple and see how he goes. Even something we see as good like a berry or vegetable can still provoke a reaction. I don't like serving mixed food with everything mushed up. It's not really how it would be in nature, animals sense what they should eat and if they eat something and get a bad reaction they can learn from it, but not when everything's all mixed up. If I were you, I would do meat only for at least a month, if it starts to improve keep going and keep the ingredients the same. If he does well and you want to reintroduce other foods do it bit by bit, test for at least a couple of weeks just one ingredient at a time. When you start to reintroduce, you could use a probiotic supplement as an additional support, check the ingredients of the probiotic in case it's got some extra ingredients in there that might throw out the elimination process. I know it can seem weird not to give any fruit and vegetables because we think they are so healthy but when you look at their nutrient profiles, there's nothing there that isn't found in fish, meat and animal sources of food, but the fruit and veggies come with sugar which shouldn't be an all year round thing with species, spices and herbs that are out of season or not even from the same hemisphere. In terms of antioxidants and things like that, there's not really any solid evidence that it will do any good a lot of nutrition science is guessing since they can't control the studies and if they do closely control them, they're not long-term. I hope that helps. Do write back if you try it or find another solution. It's always good to learn from others 🙂

@ he's been on carni only for 7 yrs. This year, specifically these past 6mos, we've added variety of veggies and other things after the persistent yeast infection. Yogurt seems to help, as well as some veggies, not all...certainly not beans. These were recommended by vets after 3 of them told me he's having "protein allergies".
At this point, i'm not willing to trust any vet as every one of them told me to put him on just sweet potatoes. 😂 uh...no...i'll see how the winter goes as it'll be a good time to really remove the fleas and eggs. Then see if his symptoms improve.

Depends on the size of your dog and their chewing style. If your dog does not chew it and tries to swallow, you may have to hold it and let them practice chewing before you give them the whole thing. You can also try something smaller like a chicken foot or a wing. Observe your dog first. And of course never give them cooked bones, just raw.

A lot of doctors suggest that taking vitamin supplements does nothing except give you expensive pee. If you eat appropriately, then there's hardly any benefit in taking more from a bottle.
I'd argue the same applies to dogs. Feed your dog a wide range of species appropriate foods, and it's unlikely they'll suffer deficiencies to the point of it creating health issues.

Hi Rachel. My puppy will be turning one in a couple of weeks and I am trying to determine what raw food I should feed her. When it comes to commercial raw products what are the nutritional guidelines to look for (% of protein, fat, carbs and moisture)? I am also looking at freeze-dried, so what should I look for there? Thanks for any information you can give me.

I have been a Billinghurst Barf disciple for twenty odd years. I breed bull mastiffs, have fit, happy, well muscled and healthy dogs, bitches always have big litters. It's just so right. More recently l had a colleague's male come in to cover my bitch. He arrived on a Sunday afternoon, and went home on Tuesday afternoon. He was at first startled at the contents of his food dish, then he relished it. My colleague told me on Wednesday morning. when she put down his Tuesday night kibbles, he looked at the dish, looked at his owner, and the message was clear,... "what's this sh$t, can l go back to my girlfriends place" The dogs know what they want. For anyone considering this feeding, have no fear, it is the most merciful way to care for our pets. Thank you for awesome information.

Agreed! 👍 It's not rocket science. People make it so difficult and need to stop over thinking it. Barf diet works and is easy to manage. My dog and cats eat raw meat with bone exclusively. One cat is 18 years old. The vet couldn't believe he was that old and was amazed at the results of his blood work. Blood work doesn't lie. I do not bother with fruits or veggies. Also, my 5 year old Pekingese goes hiking with me. He is fit and active and has zero health issues. The breed is plagued with health issues but not my boy.

@@rouxchat6033 Thank you so much for your comment. I've also followed the Billinghurst principles for about 15 years but I've recently I've been online to remind myself of a few things for getting a new puppy started and to catch up with any recent developments on the subject and, blimey, I wish I hadn't! They make it so complicated it makes me wonder if there was a marketing idea or two shoved in there somewhere. 😉 It's certainly how they've gotten the masses to eat all the crap they do now.
We lost our very big GSD in April - he was 3 months shy of 15yrs and had thrived in the best of health his whole life, never needed a vet visit, still had beautiful teeth and healthy gums, beautiful coat and never a skin problem. He lived the longest of his litter of 9 by 3 years. I was the only raw feeder.

It's quite possible dogs began taking those tiny evolutionary steps in digesting carbohydrates long before humans began agriculture, and while they were still living a hunter and gatherer existence. When game was scarce, it's not hard to think those early dogs that were just beginning to rely on humans for their food would have been fed some carbs like tubers, yams, sweet potato, nuts etc.

Beef: 16-26%protein Chicken:20%, Pork 18%, Red-meat 20-25% protein. What is this you say that dog kibble doesn't have enough protein? All my dogs have ever had kibble and lived long happy lives. Spayed and neutered too. Feeding your pet people foods can lead to bad behaviors, like trash digging, begging, eating things off the ground dropped by other people at parks, etc. I discourage anyone from feeding human food to pets. When they are older and want a taste, that might be a little different. A high quality, proven safe food by millions of pet owners is just fine and doesn't mean you are not taking care of your pet (special needs aside).
