Dr. Hielm-Bjorkman is PHD Veterinarian and Scientist specializing in peer reviewed unbiased canine nutrition research. She leads a team that consists of Veterinarians, PHD in Animal Nutrition professionals, Biochemists & Microbiologists. Even more impressive, her teams are *not* funded by any "big pet food" brands - which is how they remain objective & unbiased.
This is all public information, and out of respect for the years of work Dr. Heilm + team has conducted, I recommend you take the time to research. Having her on my vet chat series is an honor, we are lucky for humans like her.

@RachelFusaro I wished you would've asked her about feeding dogs with autoimmune disorders like SARDS a raw food diet. My dog had it & I tried to raw goat's milk to his diet then he passed away suddenly. I'm not sure what caused it but the raw milk was the only thing I changed. He was doing well on his thyroid treatments & even regained his eye sight. His sudden death shocked us all. He was only 7.

My wife and my mom have dogs from the same litter they are both female and both 10 years old now. My moms dog has been on kibble a mid grade kibble maybe mid to high. My wifes dog has been on raw her whole life. The 2 dogs were like twins most people couldn't tell them apart until a few years ago the kibble dog started to get a grey muzzle and the raw dog only recently started getting a touch of grey on her chin. Also the raw dog has always had a bit more muscle and that is more apparent now. Their teeth and gums are very different, unfortunately the kibble dog has unhealthy gums and very plaque covered teeth i recently have been helping my mom with some tips to get those teeth and gums healthier. The raw dog has very healthy teeth and gums with a small amount of plaque on a couple back teeth. Also the skin/coat on the kibble dog is good shes had some skin issues over the years but for the most part she is healthy with a nice soft coat the kibble dog also gets a fish oil supplement. The raw dog has a softer shinier coat and has had less skin issues and is also on the same fish oil supplement. Its actually really interesting comparing the 2 dogs because they are so identical the only difference is raw vs kibble and the households are different. It will be interesting to compre the 2 dogs as time goes on but as they get older the differences are showing more and more.

You can get contaminated and your children can
A dog that eats raw chicken has a salmonella laced mouth
Cooked meat is 40% higher in nutrition
I used to have superhero salukis
A 6-week trial proved that raw is inferior to cooked
      The dogs lost condition
I had to feed almost 50% more raw as opposed to cooked
The only reason humans jumped over 200,000 years in evolution
Is because we started cooking food
      Argue with David Attenborough😂
You don't need experts to tell you this
They don't digest raw eggs either
often came out as they went in

This was so interesting, thanks so much for this interview to both of you. Our first dog had 100% raw (bones, mince mixes, tripe) throughout her life which I handled every day, and our nearly 2 year old dog is also on the same diet, no one in our family has had any bacteria related illness from this as far as I can tell. It has always just made a lot of sense to me to feed raw , and it was great to hear the research findings.

My dog eats raw twice a day. When he eats breakfast. I take his dinner out to defrost. By dinner time it’s thawed out and still cold (it goes in the fridge) And I take out his breakfast for the next day. Then the next day it’s defrosted and he gets breakfast and dinner goes in the fridge. Rinse and repeat. I get everything on Sunday. Prep out all his meals for the week (Monday-Saturday) and then he gets the “left overs” when I’m done prepping (the left overs are enough to make one more meal so that’s his Sunday meal) he also gets a marrow bone Sunday morning and evening. So I buy everything on Sunday prep out his food for the week and then he gets his Sunday meal. Then he eats mon-sat and then the following Sunday I go buy another weeks worth. Prep it out and then he gets his Sunday meal again. Skin coat muscle tone all better than any kibble. Better poop. Better hydration. Leaner. It doesn’t take studies and all kinds of nonsense to see how good it is.

Find another vet. I once had a vet scream at me for feeding raw. She said "bacteria ". You have to wash the bowl! Many other things. I just let her scream. Thought to myself... and what do you feed your family. Do you buy everything precooked? You never have learned how to handle raw meat? And wash the bowl?? Really!!! Of course I wash the bowl every time after eating just like I do mine. You mean you don't wash your dog bowls? Nasty!!!!
Feed your dog what you want! The vet training for nutrition was about a 2 hour course that was given by a kibble representative- of course they want to sell their product! I bet you know more than they do with the research you have done!

I cook for my dogs. Pressure cooked chicken breasts + carrots and steamed broccoli mixed together is the bulk of what they eat. They also get some of just about everything I eat. Just a few minutes ago they got sardines and some salad I ate myself. They love all sorts of fruit, even mandarin oranges. I supplement with bone meal, probiotics and fermented (they love the organic sauerkraut from Trader Jo's) in addition to "Safe Sea" Omega 3 oil. My 2 mixed breed boys are 5 and 7 and seem to be really healthy. No allergies and no itchies. This last summer I started giving them cistus incanus (rock rose) dried leaf as a flea repellent in their morning food. I stopped vaccinating 3 or 4 years ago. My back yard is chemical free, ya lots of weeds but also lots of bugs - part of it is "arborists wood chips" (free from chip drop) and they are always rooting around in that. I love my dogs and I want them to be healthy and live long happy lives.

I've been told my entire life that chicken bones are extremely dangerous. I do not believe everything I've been told in the past and I do believe this is the best way of eating but I'm still afraid about these bones and I need some guidance. Yesterday I saw a video recipe where this guy literally added an entire chicken to his blender with whole eggs and sardines. I followed the exact same recipe and my dog loved it. But today she looks very low energy as if she's not 100% well, she even peed on my bed which I tell you is NOT normal so I am in a bit of a panic here. Should I worry about these bones? Is it safe and this is just the transition to a new diet? Does anyone know anything?

My personal opinion with vet's promoting company dog food and the prices vet's charge for treatment in the UK that just like humans becoming ill through process food and in human development of gut and allergies that there is good reason behind these profiteering from making both dogs, cat's and humans ill.
There should definitely be more information and interest in why ? These food companies are doing to us all and the connections between them and pharmaceutical companies.
End of the day they are all in it to make not only our pets more prone to ill health but humans also

I agree some breeds are more prone to ill health.
I have noticed over my 57 years on this planet and always kept dogs are cross breeds they do seem to have less health issues and live longer.
As a child growing up around dogs fed on raw, and cooked food but not processed dog food they have had less health issues.
My last dog lived 17.5 years cross Jack Russell and collie.
However in recent years my mum fed her dog commercial dog food and nothing but bad teeth and gums, heart condition and bone decay at the age of 10 now, she is also a white dog , which is interesting the comments about white dogs being more prone to health issues.
I started my new dog on vet recommended food but she has had nothing but allergies and bad stools.
Now I use a combination of home cooked food and raw ,she has been one hell of a lot better.
She still gets an allergy reaction to environmental issues, salt on pavement in winter, and pollen 36:01 in Summer.
She is a black dog, cross pug, shiz, and chihuahua.

Our neighborhood is full of free range wilded chickens, cats, rats (we live near water and nice restaurants. I've seriously considered letting my dog kill her own food! Lol, I swear the price of grass fed beef and fresh veggies is becoming unsustainable. It's nuts because she has a naturally very high prey drive or instinct. I feel like I'm raising a wolverine and she's just a small/medium mixed terrier rescue, who was abandoned in a field as a young pup. Does anyone give their dog food grade diotomatious earth every few months?

I find it hard to believe that this is even a debate ! It’s not rocket science- every species on the planet since life began have been designed by nature to thrive on raw food- this topic shouldn’t even be up for debate - Mars Nestle and Colgate have a lot to answer for as do Vets that push the stupid narrative that dry ultra processed foods are better- mind boggling - I can guarantee a Vet that pushes RC or Hills at home feeds their kids and family fresh quality wholesome foods yet at work a brain switch to recommend highly processed dry kibble. The whole thing is a joke

I do not recommend this at all. Grocery store raw meat is allowed a high amount of pathogens because it is intended to be cooked. Raw meat alone is also not a balanced diet; you need to follow a recipe created by a professional if you do DIY. I would recommend getting meat either from a fresh local butcher if you have one around (less chance of pathogens the fresher it is and cleaner/smaller the shop), or an easier option is to order raw diets online from some place like viva raw that is meant for pets. AAFCO guidelines do not allow for pathogens to be present in pet food, including raw, so the meat sold by raw pet food companies is much cleaner and often even higher quality than what is in store.
Although some will say the chance of your dog getting sick from the pathogens is low, and this is somewhat true, I really wouldn’t chance it with grocery store meat. I’ve heard some extremely sad stories of dogs getting very sick and dying suddenly from some bad bacteria in meat from the grocery store. Some people are fine with that risk but I personally am not.
However, if you’re interested in making a gently cooked diet instead of raw, then the grocery store meat is perfectly fine since you will kill the bacteria when cooking. Personally I don’t find a major difference in the benefits between gently cooked or raw for most dogs, although many swear raw makes a huge difference for their dog specifically. Really comes down to the individual there I think.

No!!!! Big no, what Violet said. Our raw meat in grocery stores are sold under the premise that it will be cooked and those pathogens that are allowed wouldnt then be present. Please never do this, don't risk it.

    • @caitm88
      @caitm88 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

No! That alone is unbalanced and can lead to health issues. This is why vets hate on raw diets, because they’re done wrong. Please search out a commercially balanced raw food company
