  • Is Podgorica the most boring capital in Europe, and is the city worth visiting? In this vlog we evaluate the city out of 5 categories:
    the people 👫,
    sights ⛪️,
    getting around 🚎,
    food & drinks 🍔🥤,
    prices💲.
    The results were not that surprising, being a capital, with a population of around 200.000 inhabitants, we didn’t have high expectations of the sights, but on the other hand, we had high hopes about the people, expecting them to be just as friendly as the rest of the Balkans. 👫😊
    Someone did steal my heart today! My crush was so hard, I almost start crying, and Håkan had to rescue me, and give me cake to cheer me up! 🐶🥲❤️‍🩹🍰
    Results:
    * the people 🥰 3
    * sights 😶 1
    * getting around 👣👟 2
    * food & drinks 😘👌 3
    * prices 👉👈 3

    The thing is, Podgorica was architecturally massacred after WWII. The post-war renovations were intended to create a utopic idealised socialist city with concrete residential blocks and so not much of the old charm remained. There is also the problem of illegal, "wild" construction which is not only destroying the city but also the nature. If you want to see what Podgorica looked like before the war google "Podgorica stare slike" ("old images of Podgorica")

      First of all: Thanks for watching! Just browsed through the images of old Podgorica, and the difference is striking. Devastating to see the scars of war in any city :(

    I have planned an 8-day itinerary of Montenegro for early October. The only part of Podgorica I intend to visit (and photograph) is the airport train station ("Aerodrom"). It looks utterly amazing - two benches in a small hut with a hand-painted sign on the front!. Other than that, I'm not wasting any time in this city. Sorry!

      Hi! Thanks for watching :) You are making the right decision. Montenegro is beautiful (at least the parts we saw), but skipping Podgorica is probably a good idea

    I enjoyed your video and I agree that Podgorica from a tourist perspective is quite a dull place. However:
    1. These dogs are free. They are not abused, they live freely, I imagine there is someone to feed them (a common habit across the region by certain people, and in Podgorica as well). Much better than being on the chain.
    2. You had a vegetarian/vegan bakery-restaurant on the other side of the city, which offers vegan burgers, pizzas, lasagnas, soups... and many cakes. Actually it is very easy to be vegetarian over there, whether you go to a bakery (different sweet pastries, savoury pies, strudel with poppy seed or apple...), a restaurant or a supermarket. A word "posno" can also be very helpful for vegan options.
    3. Podgorica is not really attractive, not so many things to be seen, in contrast to some other places in Montenegro... Why? Well, it was one of the most destroyed cities in Europe during the World War 2 and at the same time historically it was less important than many other places in present-day Montenegro.
    4. On the other side of the city there is some kind of a new "city center" with a lot of cafes, pubs, restaurants, and two shopping malls. Over there you could probably find more people sitting in cafes.
    5. There are other nice places at the coast apart from Kotor, although Kotor is the most popular among tourists (and not without a reason). However, one shouldn't skip or underestimate the north of the country. As Montenegro is one of the richest and diverse places in Europe in regards to biodiversity and landscapes (although it's so small), in the north you can find the second deepest canyon in the world (after Colorado in the US) where rafting is quite popular, one of the last 2-3 ancient forests of Europe, wonderful hiking and biking routes... but also a mosque with the highest minaret in the Balkans.

      Thanks for watching and for sharing your tips! The north side of the country sounds super interesting! We should definitely keep that in mind if (or when :)) we return to that part of the world

    The problem is that you didn't have someone to guide you on what to see... If I had guided you, you would have seen fantastic things...The old Roman city of Duklju, the hill of Gorica with its monument, the Catholic cathedral in Brutalist style Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus , the Plantaze 13 July vineyard, the largest single vineyard in Europe, with a tasting center etc....Podgorica is not the center of the city, a few kilometers away in that municipality there are many other things to see, such as the canyon of the river Cijevna, Lake Skadar and the historical town of Medun...Google-Duklja Podgorica, Plantaze 13 July vineyard, Medun, Cijevna, Catholic cathedral in Brutalist style Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus, Scadar Lake, Zabljak Crnojevica ...All in Podgorica or Podgorica
    municipality...

      @@exploringplanethome You don't go to Rome just once if you don't spread out well. There because there are too many things to see, in Podgorica because there is little to see, but there is still somewhere.
