White city because of the color of the fortress walls when viewed from the river ... Serbs love the Irish very much, because when they came to the Balkans as Slavs, they found Celts there and mixed with them ... Serbs also have Celtic genes! Old Belgrade name is Singidunum (Serbian: Сингидунум/Singidunum) was an ancient city which later evolved into modern Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. The name is of Celtic origin, going back to the time when Celtic tribe Scordisci settled the area in the 3rd century BC, following the Gallic invasion of the Balkans. I recommend a trip from Subotica and Novi Sad (former Austro-Hungary) to Nis (via Krusevac, Kraljevo and Uzice (ex Ottoman Empire), to see all the colors and contrasts of the Balkans and Serbia).
I was working on a boat where british guests were, I was kind, of course, the first question is Whether it is safe to come to Serbia I was shocked first afterwards I tried to explain that not everything is as the news reports and that they come freely to visit the beauty of our country, this man has proven like many that Serbia is one of the safest countries in Europe and that you are free to visit and know the beauty Our countries
Very safe, clean and super friendly. I think people from these parts think Eastern Europe, Balkans etc are dangerous after watching so many films portraying it that way. There's no doubt walking the streets of London or Dublin is more dangerous than walking around Belgrade. Had my phone stolen from a junkie a couple of weeks ago in Dublin. I caught him and got it back a few minutes later. No video unfortunately 😉
Hellooo I am from a long line of Belgraders and this is the best foreigner video of my city I have ever seen. You really captured the vibe / spirit of the city. Perhaps because Irish and Serbs have a similar spirit. Celts and Serbs go way back, from the time before the Roman Empire when that fortress was built... Thank you for a great video! ☀️
Delighted to hear it thanks Marija. The video was made on my first day. While there I met loads of Serbs and had a great time so my only regret is not getting more of that on Video. There's a whole history there that I didn't know about. Like the Irish soldiers (10th division) that died fighting to protect Serbia in ww1. Almost every Serb I met is a historian lol. Can't wait to go back 👍
@@PaulTheIrishPainter We love guests, it is a big part of our culture. Before Christianity in the old Slavic faith we even had a deity called Radgost - which means joyful for guests. As long as they don't try to steal our land or tell us how to live (which we've had plenty of through the centuries) we love welcoming good people and sharing our culture! So we will be very welcome to visit again!
Good video Paul. The Irish people are very good people. I like them very much. They have a tough and hard history, but their heart and way of life are in the right place. Wiskey and Šljivovica can not be wrong. Rakija connecting people
Thank you Milan. I feel the very same about the Serbian people. I'd only met 3 Serbs before going there who are very cool people so I wasn't surprised at how hospitable, friendly the people were in Belgrade. I will go back and see more for sure 👍

@@PaulTheIrishPainter I’ve been there many times, and I know the city quite well. Young Serbs are really outgoing, and if go there with positive attitude you will make lots of new friends.
White in the name came from medieval times since fortress inside at that time was filled with towers and buildings (where park is now) built with white stone so approaching from the river it looked like white town,it was kinda glowing white. Tesla museum will be moved to a much larger building soon (in 2-3 years), actually it's an old abandoned power plant building on the Danube and near city center. This current building was kinda temporary solution, since they can't show most of Tesla's stuff because of lack of space, big chunk is collecting dust in depot. That pavement around Saint Sava temple is not repaired because next year they will start renovation of that whole area around the temple, they are finishing now with circle plateau around it.
Since you are from Ireland, I recommend that you listen to a famous Serbian band from Belgrade called the Orthodox Celts, they play Irish music, I am convinced that you will like it. With a pint of beer, of course, Cheers. One interesting piece of information for you, the Celtic Scordisci tribe, founded Belgrade in the 2nd century BC and named it Singidunum
A serbian friend I met in Turkey played them for me so when I was in Belgrade I looked them up to see but they had no gigs unfortunately. Great band I've listened a lot since
I didn't study the Sigidunum history but the terminologie is roman and the romans ruled in the second century the area, so believe me that even if they built in the top of an old city, in that moment any urban activities was romans activity. The Thracians/vlachs or eventually celtic population in the area was living in the villages around the cities or shepherds on the hills and mountains.
A really good and natural video capturing Belgrade vibe in under 20mins, you’re really nailed it. Others tend to over-edit their videos and add unnecessary music that completely changes the perspective. Cheers, you’ve got a new sub! P.S. Thanks David I'm glad to hear it. Some friends said I should show more of my Dublin side as I'm toning it down for the videos 😉. I can't remember the Fawlty Tower music myself. Will have to look that up 👍

@@PaulTheIrishPainter Paul. You made a masterpiece with simple tricks! The facts are beginning to confirm that there is one of the oldest known civilizations of Vince near Belgrade, even the earliest letter - symbols found in the world, the first dwellings with fireplaces, tillage and the use of copper-like metals from the valley around Belgrade to the Carpathians in Romania. Before the history of the Slavs, the ancient Illyrians lived there. The Romans fought the Illyrians for 200 years, they failed to capture everything but when they occupied, it became their main stronghold for other campaigns. 18 Roman emperors were born in Serbia, and several in Croatia. These are very interesting stories and wars. The Illyrians left sculptures of men and women in their arms showing reverence for women, hence matriarchy. No trace of war has been found for the period around 2000 years before the Romans. The cult of the Sun, life and love, mythology was based on creating a world of love, so the Slavs, former Illyrians without war accepted Christianity, but the Orthodox Slavs skillfully preserved ancient traditions by merging them with Christian holidays and ceremony. From Rome until today the wars have not stopped. But somehow we are still here on the map. And even after 500g. Ottomans with whom we constantly fought and constantly prevented them from spreading further. I was born in Bosnia, more precisely in the Serbian republic in Bosnia near the towns of Gradacac and Modrica, I am a Croat by father and a Serb by mother. But I always look at those countries as one Yugoslavia, one people. I hope I didnt bore with the long story. Its not about getting any attention and many visitors but people who care and want to open their mind. Thank you.
@@mir6685 not boring at all your comment is full of fascinating info. I've never heard any of it before. I knew going into the Balkans I had very little knowledge and would learn some great stuff. I love how the orthodox slavs kept traditions by merging with Christian holidays etc. Also your background is very interesting. Complex to say the least. I'll need to spend a lot more time in the region to have a good understanding of the history and culture. I've been to Bosnia and Croatia on a previous trip but to watch Celtic play so I didn't learn so much about the cultures or history. My Serb pal in Dublin is from Novi Sad so I promised him that will be my next trip to anywhere in the Balkans 😉
You know why Serbians feel a connection to the Irish? Because Belgrade and a lot of the surrounding areas including the city of Sofia were Celtic cities. Tara mountain in Serbia is from the same name Tara in Ireland. The Danube was named by the Celts, one of dozens of rivers they named throughout Europe, many with that root of "Dan" in it (Don Dan Dn etc. including the Rhine, the Vistula and many others). It isnt odd they also named Danzig or Gdansk and Danmark. People think the Celts were limited to Ireland, but they were all over Europe (not just Iberia). There is a lot of history we are never told about this. It conflicts with someone elses history I am not allowed to say who on this totally controlled site.
13:17 Hahahhahaha I laughed so hard at this :D Its not like that, its just really not common to see people in Serbia walking around and filming themselves, it was more like "Ah, a tourist." Im glad that you had a nice time and that you liked Serbia, I have plans to go to Ireland as well, we are very similar by mentality but Irish are lots more stubborn and that really means stubborn. :D
I believe he didn't think that but I thought it would give ppl a bit of a laugh 😉. You're right about the Irish and Serbs having a similar mentality. That became very clear to me very fast. I wish I could video every encounter but of course thats impossible. Literally from the second I arrived, the border control guy was such a cool bloke and was happy and surprised to meet an Irishman walking over the border. I reckon very few iriah people have been to Serbia. No doubt that will change in the coming years I'm sure of it 👍😉
Another great and funny vid. Have a good Xmas my man and thanks for the vids this year. Here's to you reaching 1k subs in 2022 and getting you some beer money for your travels next year 👍 🍾
Serbians have the upmost respect for Irish people as we have both been oppressed by a greater power. Both of our cultures have been attempted to be destroyed by our oppressors but we kept fighting and eventually preserved it. The Irish are always welcome in Serbia, as for the English… well… we shall see hahaha
I honestly knew very little about Serbia's history before going. I quickly learned about the appreciation for Irish soldiers who died fighting on behalf of Serbia in WW1. Appreciation for the Irish in general. I've been telling Irish friends constantly they have to visit Serbia. I can't wait to go back
It pronounce like Skadar+Lia name with Turkish "Lia" suffix which usually means place, it's Bohemian quart that name came from "Skadarska Ulica" which means "Skadar street" ( Skadar = town in North Albania in medieval times it was Serbian and it's mentioned in serbian epic songs many times as Serbian founded).
Belgrade means white city or white town because the Celts called it "Singhi Dun", meaning something like "White fort". (Like Dun Laoghaire). You're on the grounds of your ancestors, potentially :) Greetings from a Serb from South Dublin. Hope the Craic's 90 while you're there

A fellow Dub here Paul, looking to do a trip round the Balkans at the end of March..starting in Bucharest, your vids are giving me a great insight! Belgrade looks amazing i have to say!
Cheers Colin you have a class trip ahead of you. Wish I could do it again with more time. Belgrade is class and they have a lot of respect for the Irish there. I spent most of my time in the three carrots Irish pub. You'll have to go in. Staff and customers very sound. Nice little home away from home while traveling. Are you going a few other places as well?
@@PaulTheIrishPainter Sound for the heads up on the Three Carrots, i'll be sure to check it out if and when i get to Belgrade. So the story with me is...I have a one way flight booked to Bucharest and then plan to see where the road takes me from there? I watched your video from Brasov..looks like a lovely little town so hopefully i get to pay it a visit too. So are you back home now after your travels? Oh i was in Naples myself the summer of 2020 around the same time as yourself, your videos were bringing it all back to me!
@@endevourdaze that's just what I did. Got to bucharest and played it by ear. It's the best way! Fairplay you had the balls to go to Naples then when we were advised not to 😂. Romania is class. Yea I'm home now painting on building sites. Still surrounded by Romanians 😄
@@PaulTheIrishPainter I like to live by my own rules Paul so if there was a way to get out of the country at that time I was definitely gonna make it happen..and I did😄Mind you, I was living in Germany at the time so I flew from there but the advice re travel was the same as in Ireland at the height of covid! By the way, did you make it to the island of Ischia when you were in Naples, I spent a few days there..was beautiful..got the ferry over and back from Naples so it was a nice variation on the vibe that goes with a city trip and overall I got the best of both worlds with a city and beach holiday rolled into one! Ah right so you started out from Bucharest, seems like a good starting location and from the vids I've been watching a beautiful city too so all good really!
@@endevourdaze some people staying at rhe hostel were talking about going to Ischia. I said I was going but forgot the next day. When I got back to the hostel they were all gone. So easybto go to Naples from here so that's another good reason to head back. While on Alalfi coast I also didn't go to Capri island or Salermo so that's a nice little trip I'll be planning at some stage 😉
Belgrade - WhiteCity comes from the Kalemegdan fortress , stone that it is made of is very light color ( or at least it was ) , it appeared white from a far.
Thank you Bob I appreciate the info 👍
The stone was white when the fortress was built. Now it isn't any more, cause it's really old. 😉

That was some bar lol I could drink there for the week. Great video as usual stay safe Merry Christmas ☘️
The three carrots Irish pub Belgrade that's the best pub I found on that trip. I spent the remaining couple of days in that pub. Took a little break from the vlogging 🍻😉
Thanks for the fascinating info. Good to know for my return trip 👍😉
Thank you for wonderful video! It is really interesting & motivating for travel. Cannot wait when all of us start easily travel again! xx
Thanks I'm glad to hear that. I hope you can travel again soon. Some places are less strict than others so choose wisely 😉👍
@@PaulTheIrishPainter agree, enjoy in Serbia brother, wish you all the best 💪

So we will be very welcome to visit again!
wow.. it looks amazing!
It is an amazing city for sure 👍

Good video Paul. The Irish people are very good people. I like them very much. They have a tough and hard history, but their heart and way of life are in the right place. Wiskey and Šljivovica can not be wrong. Rakija connecting people
Thank you Milan. I feel the very same about the Serbian people. I'd only met 3 Serbs before going there who are very cool people so I wasn't surprised at how hospitable, friendly the people were in Belgrade. I will go back and see more for sure 👍
Many East Indian travel through Belgrade to Canada. They stop by for 2 weeks before catching flight. We can see that self isolation working. Lol.

What a great clip mate, very nice little documentary. You’re capturing Belgrade with a positive attitude. 🇷🇸
Thanks Christian. Best comment I can get is from someone from Belgrade or that's been and says I captured what it's really like so I'm glad to hear it 😉👍
@@PaulTheIrishPainter I’ve been there many times, and I know the city quite well.
Thanks for the info 👍. While visiting for a short time I'd never have learned this. Much appreciated 👍
Indeed, the first known mention of Belgrade as a "White City (fort)" was in the 9th century in a letter by Pope John VIII.

Great band I've listened a lot since
@Ante Pavelić what's up ustasha
@Ante Pavelić Bljakburg, OVČARA, Škabrnja
@Ante Pavelić Što bi rekao jedan pametan čovek: "DIJEVNAGOSTAŠOU"
I didn't study the Sigidunum history but the terminologie is roman and the romans ruled in the second century the area, so believe me that even if they built in the top of an old city, in that moment any urban activities was romans activity. The Thracians/vlachs or eventually celtic population in the area was living in the villages around the cities or shepherds on the hills and mountains.
A really good and natural video capturing Belgrade vibe in under 20mins, you’re really nailed it. Others tend to over-edit their videos and add unnecessary music that completely changes the perspective.

No trace of war has been found for the period around 2000
years before the Romans.

Fascinating stuff. I do believe we don't know the real history for so many events. Most of what we learn here is under the British educational system
@@PaulTheIrishPainter Its the same way in most western countries. Actually the original Brits were Celts lol.
