Simple way to light a griddle suffering from propane over pressurization.

  • We figured out a pretty easy way to resolve over pressurization of a propane regulator on a gas griddle or grill. We first tried bleeding the tank, shaking the tank,,, kicking and swearing at the tank.... None of it worked... This technique worked better. We are sure lots of people already know this but in case you did not we figured we would post a video on it.

We've used this griddler for a variety of items including steak, fish, vegetables th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMcXT6_MuT0hB3ejyGQQHaeof9bwoWPUf and mushrooms and it's been great! Gets that great smokey flavor when using high heat or sear. The grill works amazingly simple and very low smoke for what it is. Heat gets up fairly quick, especially on closed position. The griddler side is fairly simple, better for eggs and pancakes rather than any cooking. Use the flat plates with the grill side if needed.Cleanup is easy and having heat on both sides is great for cooking a large amount or panini press. This definitely gets hot though so be careful with the sides.

Same thing happened to my 22. Turning nobs off and disconnecting the tank from the hose for 30 seconds, then connect the hose and slowly open the propane until fully open. Now light up the grill like normal. Thanks for the videos!

Ok, you have provided something useful to the world of TH-cam, Well Done!
I have tons of experience with propane, decades. Yet, I have never suffered over pressurization.
I have just purchased a Razor by Blue Rhino and on the second fire, nothing but low and SLOW.
You made sense and I went right out to try the technique! You saved me, Thank You.

just purchased my 22" from walmart as well. First time i lit the burners i had the same issue. very small flame, i knew there was an issue when 20 minutes in on high there was no discoloration of the griddle. I unhooked the line, blew in both sides thinking there was something blocking the flow. i reconnected and WOW. Finally getting the right amount of heat. i was going to call Blackstone the next day to have them send me a new regulator. Then i started seeing these videos about the valve and tripping the safety gate in the regulator. I am very happy with the grill, been cooking on it the last 2 days. i will try your method on my next camp trip. thanks for sharing.

The pressure regulator was designed with the small bottles in mind. not the big tanks. There are adapter hoses with a regulator built into it and the double regulator setup should work fine as the first regulator knocks down the pressure to something the original one can handle. Grill on!!

I had a similar problem with my 36 inch griddle with full 20# cylinders. I could run those half filled 20# cylinders from Walmart or local grocery stores, but if I put on a cylinder filled by loacal LP company, it would completely overload the regulator and shut down the griddle. I now have a big dual stage regulator on my big Blackstone and it works fine with either type of tank. My local LP company boys did a bang up job fixing my griddle. My old regulator would turn into a block of ice if connected to a fully filled 20# cylinder. Not any more. It did not happen on my 17 inch griddle when I connected it to a new 20# cylinder. It also works fine on 1# cylinders but when I refill them I keep them under 920 grams.

@@TheGriddleGuys I could send you a picture if you want. It keeps filled tanks from slugging the griddle with liquid gas. The regulator that came with my 36 inch griddle would turn into a block of ice and shut down my griddle. They also put a spin on connector on my regulator, so I can connect it to the tank as before. I did not have a similar problem with my 17 inch griddle when I connected it to a full 20# cylinder. I tried working with Blackstone but those idiots want you to jump through their hoop to get any support. The handle on my hamburger smasher broke, due to bad welds, and I contacted them. I do not jump through hoops. I just welded the damn thing back together. As you can tell I am not some idiot that fell off the turnip truck that went through town last week. I get things done and do not waste a lot of time doing it.

My Blackstone would not light up or at best get little gas flow. I tried everything suggested here and elsewhere. But then it occurred that it may be the same thing that happened years ago on my gas grill. Insect nest in the gas line! Probably a spider cocoon....I took a tie wrap and fed it through the gas connection, twirled it around a few times and presto...FIRE! PS...Don't forget to put the little black cap on the gas feeder when you are done cooking... (That's how they get in.)

Every time you turn on a newly connected tank, on anything, open the valve slowly. If the gas flows too quickly (which it would do until the hose is pressurized), it will trigger the wonderful safety mechanism. This also prevents the flow if the valve is accidentally opened or a hose breaks or anything. And, don't open the valve with the burners on, that'll trigger it too. The only reason this worked in this video is you opened the valve slowly. If it does get triggered just shut off the tank for a second and then open it slowly again.

There is nothing wrong with the regulator if it works with a 1 pound bottle it will work with any size propane tank.
The problem is the hose connector at the 20 pound bottle. There is a built-in check valve that is supposed to stop the propane from escaping from the bottle if the hose ruptures.
The small 1 pound bottles that are being used have the same pressure in them as a 20 pound bottle. The bottle size doesn't matter. Propane has the same vapor pressure in any container it is stored in. At 70 degrees F. you will have 110# of pressure and at 80 degrees F. you will have 128# of pressure no matter the size of the bottle.
