Really enjoying these videos! One tip that I learned when I became a medical assistant many years ago was how to wash my hands in the way that medical workers do. You turn your fingers upward under the stream of water so that it flows under your fingernails... this is the only way to really keep the undersides of your nails clean without soaking them. If you do it every time you wash your hands, the ends of your nails will be really clean and will look much whiter.
Thank you Anna ,you have helped me so much! After following your advice for about five months I now have beautiful healthy natural nails. I never knew how to really file my nails and take care of them,so for decades I wore acrylics and gel powder dips! After I retired I got tired of going to the nail salon and wasting an hour and a half of my day. Just got tired of the whole salon experience. My nails were so damaged. I found you accidentally but I’m so glad I did! Your experience & knowledge are greatly appreciated! It has given me a sense of pride & self confidence doing my own manicures. Sounds silly, but it really has.My husband says my nails look better than when I went to the salon!Never underestimate what your gentleness and kindness means in the world we live in today! God bless you.❤
anna, i cant believe i only knew of your videos now. i binge-watched your nail care videos, and i cant help but appreciate how well-thought-out and digestible your videos are. as a beginner, i get intimidated by the number of products and nail routines out there, but you made it easy. what you've created here is a welcoming community that uplifts each other
Thank you (both of you) for sharing this process and progress with us. Her hands are looking so lovely. She does look so nice with this more square shape. This is yet another reminder for me to keep up with the oils and creams.
Thank you so much for explaining this. I have followed your advice to avoid stretched proximal nail folds and for the first time ever, they are more defined and shapely, and polish application is so much better. All this improvement, with post- chemotherapy nail damage as well!
Just wondering whether I will need to keep up this level of daily maintenance, or will the proximal nail folds eventually be "trained" to grow without stretching? Thank you so much Anna!
Yes, of course. Skin shrinks. If you don't let the skin stick to the nail and stretch it will not stretch. But yes, maintenance is necessary but it takes very little time. 1 min routine th-cam.com/video/8LXeYtTG8OU/w-d-xo.html
Hello Anna. I’m a big fan of your channel and the gentle manicure style. I love this video, because my nails and cuticle are very similar to hers .I’m trying to care for my nails and this is helping a lot , just pushing back no cutting pnf and applying oil they look healthier. I feel so pampered ….
The gentle approach is how you get the best results over time! So satisfying to see the improvement. Do you know notice any difference in how the polish wears on each hand with the dry vs. cuticle softener?
Thank you so very much for this content. This has been the best video explaining stretched folds, which I have struggled with maintaining my entire life. Thank you so very much.
Erica, Thank you so much for sharing the the before, current, and after information including the photos! I have noticed that every winter my nails start to peel and was looking for videos and came across your channel. I looked for this question on your replies but do you recommend a hydrating base coat or a strengthening base coat for winter problem nails? Thanks for your time in posting videos to your channel!
Happy new year Anna. Great job and great results. My cuticle looks exactly like that. Especially like the image right before first visit. I’ll be glad to see the first two videos! Following your advices I told the nail technician NOT to cut my proximal nail fold. Every time she did that my proximal nail fold had grown thicker. Also what you’ve use before applying the Dior apricot? Thank you! 🥰
I push back my cuticles 1-2 times a week and trained cuticles if that is an actual thing. I don’t cut or allow anyone cut. If they cut, the whole process starts over 😫. I love your you tube page so much.
Be super careful with any type of buffing. I just run a buffer near the cuticle area to smooth any catches. Don’t buff the nails, it removes the layers. They might look better but they will be weaker
@@TheSalonLife oh I’ve watched you a while and know that! It’s very light and gentle using the corner where the cuticle was removed-swipe swipe done! I never liked buffing the whole nail plate, it felt weird.
Your nail file the fine or med. might order one. We use glass files at the spa I work but sometimes just not strong enough especially on some strong nails or toenails. We do have reg. Nail files for gel nails which I have to grab one from time to time even though we are to save them for gel manicures.
People don’t realize healthy skin isn’t under dry skin. It is the next layer of the dermis. You have to allow dry to slough off naturally to allow the next layer of skin to come up naturally. You keep it moistened so it doesn’t crack. (I know I’m probably using those terms wrong. Sorry).
I continue to have thick proximal nail fold however I'm VERY proud to say that every week (for the last 3 weeks) when I've given myself manis, I haven't cut them. I'm trying really hard to put hand cream and/or my cuccio oil to help with moisture. Where did you get your small yellow buffers? Great size!!!
Hi It looks great. Is this inter-proximal fold going to get smaller? I’ve been using the Blue Cross for last 4 months without cutting my fold but it’s still huge. Any tips? Thank you
What do you mean by inter- proximal fold? It depends on the person but if the skin is not stretched by being stuck to the nail and cared for it surely stops being stretched. Check out this video.
How to Correct Stuck Skin Around The Nails [3 Week Progress] th-cam.com/video/XxuJpuG222U/w-d-xo.html Ps. It’s also totally normal and healthy to have skin around the nails.
@@TheSalonLife I’m so sorry it’s me. I forgot the proper name. I mean the skin around the nail. And thank you so much for your reply. To be honest probably I push it too hard. In your video you are much more gentle 😃
No no, don’t be sorry. I just wanted to make sure that I understand what you are saying. I thought maybe it’s something I didn’t know :) I think nudging the skin gently and more often (like every 1-2 days) is way better than doing manicure every 2 weeks and being rough and digging and separating the skin around the nails. If you create an inflammation the skin will try to protect itself and it will grow and thicken up
Ps. I actually think that saying “the skin around the nails” is best. It’s just skin and treat it as skin. Don’t cut it and peel it. Take care of it and protect it
The nails look so much longer (even after shortening them) because the proximal nail fold is not overgrown anymore. The Dior looks lovely on this client and her nails look quite healthy now.
Anna, thanks for another great video. When you recommend to push the PNF back - if doing so a couple of times a week can polish still be worn or should this done on an unpolished nail only?
Hi Libbyann! So sorry for the late reply! It definitely can be done with polish on. Just a gentle nudge to keep it nicely and healthly (lol, came up with a new word) kind of separated from the nail plate.
Could you talk about different types of nail polish removers versus acetone etc, in a video? I am using one right now that seems so strange in its texture, almost oily. Wondering if that was the reason my manicure didnt go so well today 🤪Love your channel guys 🥰
Oh yes, pure acetone mixed with 99% alcohol makes the best cleanser of the nails before polish application. Also if your polish remover is oily or you are using a cuticle remover washing hands is a good idea and then wiping with the DIY prep I mentioned above. I use pure acetone pretty much majority of times.
@@TheSalonLife Thank you ☺️ I got a better remover now that doesn’t seem as oily, but will def check for pure acetone and get some pure alcohol and try that out!
I keep wondering which cleaner pads you use after the dry manicure, the gauze like ones? All the lint-free ones I've tried, still give off tissue particles that end up on the nail!
Are you located in Spain? I notice your accent and then you started speaking spanish. I met a few people from western europe when I studied abroad in Spain. Anywho you do awesome work and make beautiful content, very informative! You've gained a new subscriber
I find your videos relaxing and informative . I take good care of my nails and have no issues with nail fold ,or cuticle . I was wondering why clients fold was in that condition . Did she always have her nail fold cut ?Also,I will be purchasing one of the nail oils that you recommend .I would like to see the other two videos in this series . Have a great New Year !👍♥️
Hi Monica! It’s difficult to tell why. I have some clients who don’t do absolutely anything to their nails and the skin around their nails looks great and barely have any cuticle. Others develop more issues when they don’t maintain their nails. Yes, before she came to me (initially over the summer) the other provider (she would get her nails done once in a while) would cut the skin around her nails. After initial 4-5 manicures with me over the summer the nails looked great but then she didn’t come back for few months and the skin again stretched (not as bad as when she initially came to me though)
Beautiful as always, Anna. But now we need to talk about those gorgeous tips of yours! Are they gold or silver? How did you get them so perfect? I've wanted to do tips over color, but haven't even attempted as my hands are not steady enough for that. Hugs as usual. Hey there, MSL :) - Laurent
Hi Laurent! Ufffff..... I missed that comment, so sorry!!! This was Essie To Have & To Gold over Dior Nail Glow. I have to make a video of how I did the French with these. I just have an issue with my shoulder and I can't twist my hand that way especially for the camera. Hopefully the cortisone injection I just got will help. MSL says hi :) 🤗
@@TheSalonLife Oh, gosh, no worries. I just had a cortisone shot in my shoulder too! Hope you feel better soon. Oh, please do a vid on how you did the tips (when you're feeling better. Don't want you to further hurt your shoulder, showing us new tricks) as they are amazing. Big hugs. Laurent
HI Isabel! It's just a buffer block that I cut into 4 pieces because I don't reuse them on clients. If its just for home use you don't have to throw it out. Be very gentle with a buffer. Don't buff the full surface every time, just the regrowth if you are polishing to smooth any catches of skin, not to remove the layers of the nail. Here is something I would get for my own use: amzn.to/3FBx3UF amzn.to/3L8Onl1 They don't seem to have them sold separately at a decent price I would recommend the 220/280 or even 180/100 (use the softer side, it could be OK use your discretion)
Do you have tips for preventing these little tears at the side of the nails just on the skin? I have good nails but I always have this one or two nails on my right hand that get a little break in the nail. I usually cut the nail and let it grow out to cut it again. Since I have a good nailbed and pointy fingers I just shape my nails in oval pointy shapes so nobody really notices the no length nail 😂. But I can never seem to prevent those little tears. I’ve also never done a manicure before and looking at this I would love to go cause this shows such an improvement! Ugh and how do you cap nails so easily I suck at it I don’t even try anymore.
The sides of my nails curve down very far, is it okay to cut down the sides far down if it's white or not that far down and now that I don't cut the cuticles, wait to see if it stops growing like that?
Loved the video ! I’ve not used a diamond file such as this one. Is there no damage to the nail filing both directions with a diamond file ? The nails look really great ! I’m considering purchasing this file !❤️
Hi Donna! Filing in both directions is not damaging. Using too low of a grit can (the lower the grit the courser the file, the higher the grit the smoother the file). In the description box I have a link to a video done by a renowned cosmetic formulator and a chemist Doug Schoon. I use diamond or now I just started testing glass files because they can be properly disinfected between clients and cuts on garbage created by using “one time use” items.
@@TheSalonLife thank you so much ! I have ordered the diamond file from Erica’s. I’m looking forward to using it ! I will also experiment with a glass file I already own !❤️
What an improvement! I appreciate your videos include nail health tips too. Would be nice to see the transformation of peeling nails (requesting for a fiend 😉). So in reality instead of calling it cuticle, it should be proximal nail fold oil, no? 😂
In reg to your last question: it should be called "skin and nail oil" like Famous Names calls it correctly :) Peeling nails is something client has to correct. Using oil multiple times a day and using a hardener (usually peeling nails are soft) every couple of days until the nails improve. There is not much I can do once a week or every 2 weeks ;(
@@TheSalonLife Thank you for the tip! I have started keeping oil and Eucerin Advanced Repair hand cream next to the two sinks where I mostly wash my hands, and apply both each time. Is it still effective if you have a polish on the nail? It’s been years since my nails peeled. Years! It may have been the switch in dish soap - I know, wear gloves! I’d hate to think it was the Essie GC I tried. I have Kerasal for my feet, but have yet to try it on my fingers - they get that tough skin around the free edge that sometimes is so hard it feels like a nail scratching! Thank you again for the response and the tip! Happy New Year! 🎆 💅🏻 💕
Came across your videos just by chance and I am extremely glad I did! Such excellent information. I have been having my cuticles cut for years. You would cringe at seeing my hands. I am going to follow your recommendations and will try to post photos to your link. My question today is about ridges. I have developed them in the last couple of years. Do you have any recommendations? My nails also have some strange reaction to nail polish/gels. After wearing them for about a week my nail plate starts to separate from the bed! The manicurist thinks I’m crazy. I quit wearing polish and I miss it so much. Have you ever seen this happen? Any recommendations? Thank you so much for making these informative videos.
Sometimes when the skin is torn and without trimming it it will tear more I will. But just because the skin is not attached it doesn’t mean that it can be cut. It’s keratinized but it doesn’t mean that cutting it won’t make it grow more. It will only get more calloused in the end. It’s best to push it back every second day or so after a shower and put on a cream to keep it flexible and it won’t stretch like this. Much depends on skin flexibility. Flexible skin will bounce back. And the flexibility is something that client is responsible for. Avoiding harsh detergents, applying proper creams after hand wash, good nutrition etc.
so we don't cut the top extra skin even though it looks bad because if you continue to moisturize it and push it back ...it will eventually look good ?
Nice videos well the few I have watched...My big problem is I chew my nails, not like I used to. I used to chew them everyday when I was in school especially elementary and jr.high school. Once I was able to get my nails somewhat longer I wouldn't have a nail tech clean them up for me, I wouldn't clean mine up even using a nail file and filing them. I would let them grow, finally had a job worked Deli/ Bakery @ Kroger, several stores, they were always busy between dealing w/ slicing lunch meats, cheeses, dealing with whole birds, frying chicken, baking cookies, frozen doughs, the bake shift it was alot. My nails would get dirty underneath the nails especially if the nails were longer the dirt could easily get under the nails so I would chew my nails off, down to where there was barely any nail left. I would either chew my nails off or they would break off w/ the job I had. My biggest issue I have aways had is using the nail file correctly amd filing my nails so they look halfway decent. I wish I could get my entire nail from top to bottom to only be on the skin area of my fingers, nothing sticking out off the top of the finger like if I had went to the salon and had acrylic nails put on. I can never get the cuticles pushed back enough, everytime I do it starts bleeding, gets raw, sore and red for days at a time. I just wish I could get the bottom of my nails to go further back when I use a cuticle pusher, cuticle oil and cuticle cream.
Here it is :). On myself I used a clear base (well, mine was the Dior Nail Glow) GENTLE SALON MANICURE with Essie "Mademoiselle" + rose gold tips [WATCH ME WORK] th-cam.com/video/Er4SX8u62dc/w-d-xo.html
Hi Elizabeth! The fix is very simple one. Just a gentle push on a regular bases. I just received some pictures for Anna's Nail Advice series with significantly stretched PNF, I will be doing a video about it soon. The key is not trying to fix it right away. Push back tiny bit as far as it separates without any discomfort. Also (extremely important) use urea based cream after each hand wash (dab it on the affected fingers) until this is corrected. When the skin is separated it will dry out and we want to prevent that. The PNF will shrink back to a proper position without doing any cutting.
What a transformation! Both hands looked so much healthier but there seemed to be quite a difference between the 2 before this manicure. Though there was very little cuticle on both hands, it seemed like the PNF after Blue Cross treatment was quite thick, while there was hardly much at all on the efiled hand. What was your impression, seeing it first hand, so to speak 😆
Yes, I noticed the same thing. E-file side looked slightly better. Which shows that using these tools gently does not cause the living skin around the nails grow thicker due to trauma. But yes, the problem is that many people thing more is better and they don't know when to stop and that for sure can cause trauma and more build up in the future
I wonder why you leave so much dead looking skin around the nail? When I push my proximal skin back it dries out stands up and becomes very brittle and I don’t know what to do with it apart from cutting it. I can never soften it to get rid of it. Help! pauline.
If you push it back on a regular base, every few days it won't be happening. You will prevent it from sticking to the nails and stretching as the nail is growing..
PS. It's not a dead skin, the dead skin is cuticle and it was removed. The skin that you refer is living skin and it's completely normal and healthy to have it.
You have excellent content - thank you for sharing. You, potentially, could go far if you do something about the background music! It’s disturbing, like you’re caring for someone who’s on their deathbed. Also, it blows on the speaker’s so I have to turn it down - then I can’t hear you - which is the whole reason for watching this video. I’ve tried watching this on other devices and had the same problem. I had others listen, too and, without prompting, it was noted that the background music didn’t fit the content.
Hi Cristina. We do not cut the living tissue around the nail. Instead use non invasive techniques. I'll leave a link to a video where we talk about why we don't cut the living skin. th-cam.com/video/ByMeiAsuc0c/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!
It's a matter of preference really. "Russian manicure look" is risky but everything in life is risky I guess and it's up to each person to assess the risk and decide what is right for them. I personally don't like the cut look. To me, having skin around the nails is natural and if that skin is taken care of, it looks normal and beautiful. Many of my clients come to me because I don't cut the living skin. Many salons do and they have clients too :) Just like you have vegan restaurants and steak houses and you have market for both. Here is a very helpful article schoonscientific.com/2019/whats-new-nail-anatomy-latest-facts/
Hi Judy! So sorry for late reply. The direction doesn't matter, what matters is the grit of the file. Here is a reference: th-cam.com/video/LdpvdDJ9wJI/w-d-xo.html

I used EnVogue Prep or you can use 99% alcohol :)
@@TheSalonLife thank you for the reply❣️
Dear Anna, I lern a lot!! Thank you! What kind of buffer or sponge ist it? Can you link the product? I never seen something like that in Germany.
Here is something I would get for my own use:
amzn.to/3FBx3UF amzn.to/3L8Onl1
They don't seem to have them sold separately at a decent price
I would recommend the 220/280 or even 180/100 (use the softer side, it could be OK use your discretion)
In reg to your last question: it should be called "skin and nail oil" like Famous Names calls it correctly :)
Peeling nails is something client has to correct.
Is so helpful!
Thank you. ❤
do you ever trim the proximal nail fold? it doesn't appear to be attached so seems you could without issues?
Do you need to wash the hands after using the blue cross cuticle remover?
Yes, you need to neutralize it with water.
so we don't cut the top extra skin even though it looks bad because if you continue to moisturize it and push it back ...it will eventually look good ?
Yes :). That skin shrinks back if you care for it
@@TheSalonLife I will trust you and give it a try .Thank you 💜
Beautiful
Thank you for sharing :)
Hello where did you get that small timer?
This is my fav timer, I had these in Canada. amzn.to/3ccREEf
The one I have now is this: amzn.to/3PEHQAO
Aww those gold tips how do you make them - show us please 👏🙏
Here it is :). On myself I used a clear base (well, mine was the Dior Nail Glow)

Do I necessarily need a base coat before the Dior nail glow?
No, you don’t need to. If a client has nice and healthy nails that don’t need strengthener I use 1-2 coats of Dior Nail Glow on them. Works great!
I always get this overhang frizzy stuff when I file people’s nails. How do I stop that??
Do you like the Dazzle Dry top and bottom coat? And thank you for your info on nails !!
I love Dazzle Dry overall. Excellent line :) I have never used it with any other polish though.
What is the product you used just before the polish application?
Prep to clean the nails? You can use 99% alcohol.
Great video Anna, are you located in Toronto ? If so do you offer manicure services ?
Hi Sharmila! I used to be in Oakville but I moved to Spain.
Way to go Anna!
What brand is the gold polish on your nails?
Hi Georgia :). It’s Essie Gel Couture “To have & to Gold”
thanks Anna!
But how come cuticle is still very rough after 3 weekly manicure?
Is there a video where you fix the stretched proximal skin? That's my biggest issue.
I appreciate your information very much...the background "music" is not necessary...it's even distracting.
Thank you for your input Ladonna!
It looks almost as though the nail plate is joining back to the nail bed after nail biting? Was she a biter?
Possibly. I noticed that when someone constantly wears polish the nail bed extends.
PS….your French glow!! 💅🏻
Please show me the first two.
Nice ❤ ❤ ❤
Hi S J, Thank you so much for your feedback.
Why didn't you clip the skin around the nail to give it a better cleaner look?
Hi Cristina. We do not cut the living tissue around the nail. Instead use non invasive techniques. I'll leave a link to a video where we talk about why we don't cut the living skin. th-cam.com/video/ByMeiAsuc0c/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps!
I know but it gives such a clean crisp look... I love the Russian manicure look.. If it's done right it's ok..😉🤔🥴
Many salons do and they have clients too :)
Just like you have vegan restaurants and steak houses and you have market for both.
Here is a very helpful article

Enjoyed the video, but please, this music is an awful drone in the background. 🙉
I thought you were not supposed to file back and forth..only in one direction
Hi Judy! So sorry for late reply.
The direction doesn't matter, what matters is the grit of the file.
