BMW NO COMM: Bus Problem? Or Scanner Problem?

- In this video I wanted to show the possible pitfalls of a scanner that can get you misled into thinking the vehicle has a bus communication problem. Fortunately, I had a different brand scanner to test out the theory and see if it was a vehicle issue or scanner issue.
Thanks for showing us and demonstrating 1st hand why multiple tools are required for diagnosing vehicles.
Thank you for watching, and I definitely was surprised to experience this
Welcome to the wonderful world of aftermarket scantools. The Topdon is a rebranded Launch which as a brand has been around much longer then Autel, therefore their vehicle coverage goes much further back. Autels are known to be patchy/hit and miss on older stuff. It's standard practice to try 2 or 3 different scantools if there are comms issues or sofware glitches.
As you have just discovered the answer to the question: how many scantools do i need?
All of them.😊😊
Just out of curiosity, you seem to do a lot of BMWs, would it not be wiser to invest in the OEM BMW scantool?
I actually started my shop with a second-hand high-end Launch, it was able to do a ton for me in my first 3 years. That's when I got my first Autel. As far as why I don't have factory BMW... I think it's because since I worked for BMW for a decade, I was 100% aware of the diagnostic tooling and software, and once I got out to the aftermarket world and saw how amazingly mirrored the scanners were to the factory software, I personally haven't had the "need" to have factory. Knowing all the ins and outs of factory BMW and finding them in both Launch and Autel, I have been able to maintain and survive, so far... Maybe one day I might get it, it's just for now I know I have been able to navigate through work that I have encountered. But most importantly, you most definitely bring up the excellent point of having the need to have multiple tools. Thank you for watching
Very surprising since your Autel is a current unit!
Surprised and then some, I definitely wasn't expecting that 🤦♂️

If it has 20 pin+OBD, you can bridge pins on the 20 pin to make diagnostic/programming possible by OBD, had a similar fault on a E46 which had lost synchronization between the ews and DME, I didn't have a dedicated 20 pin adapter, only OBD, so I bridged certain pins on the 20 pin to be able to do it by OBD to do the synchronisation and voila!
Yes, the 20pin connector has a spin on cap that should be on there when no scanner is plugged in (into the 20pin), and the cap has a resistor built in that connects the 2 pins so that that the obd dlc can be used for generic scanner communications. Thank you for watching and sharing your tip
What tool did you use to resync? I bought an e46 but there seems to be an issue with the immo/key synchronization as it’s not detecting it
For everyone who is mesmerized by the top don, it’s based on the launch. Just sayin 😊

Thank you for watching Nick, and yes my IM608 is current and up to date
wow just had something like this happen to me today except I still have no communication Tried Autel im 508, tried albrites system , tried ista d and p and othere's today and still no communication of 1999 bmw 323i m52 Dme ms42 found a video on line showing there's a connector under the left seat that has 3 wire's going to a connector that fails and you with have no commutation at obd and 20 pin under hood
Link? I have a 97 328i that has limited communication with both. Wondering if that's the issue.
