I'm actually an interior finish guy and have never attempted to cover a bird box... I figured I needed a roll of tin and a break but this is far superior! I only have 2 birdboxes and this video saved me from renting a break for them.
I’m so glad I can help you out in James! I know it seems complicated when you first start but after a little bit of know how it’s not too bad. Good luck with the rest of your project!
Good explanations, good demonstrations, no fancy tools, i think you know what you are talking about. Best video on soffits and fascia that i saw, i know what to do now, thank you very much from Montreal Quebec.👌✌
I agree with the previous comment. I wrapped my first bird box today and I could not have done it without your help. You are a good instructor. While I have seven more to build and wrap, I have one that is unique. No matter how I try to build it looks like crap so I don't nail it. I have to figure it out. THANK YOU!
Where the fascia returns to the gable wall we would leave it long and bend out a tab to nail to the gable. Where you notched out the return for the wood fascia don’t break out the tab leave it bent out to flash the joint. Where the rake cap runs by the ‘bird box’ we install some aluminum under sill trim to house the cut edge. Less visible nails all around. I often used a small 15 degree parallelogram block to fold in end tabs on windowsill covers. Fascia return bends can be done in the ends of the brake. Invest in some flanging pliers and red lefts and green rights. The Vee you put in fascia bottom cuts is necessary to allow an over bend offsetting spring back.
Thanks for taking time to record this video while you’re working, great job. You're well-spoken and a good teacher. I like the trick of turning the blade around for nicer cut on the vinyl soffit. An alternate I did on my house is to cut the vinyl in a jig like yours and use a 7 ¼” diamond blade (like a tile saw) on a cordless saw. Works really good.
You are amazing bro! Explained things well with no unneeded commentary. This is exactly the video iv been looking for! Please keep doing these videos🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nice technique. If you use a regular roll of metal, however, and a break, there’s no need to extend the height of the bird box. Also, capping the corners is a simple way to enhance the professionalism and aesthetic of the metal.
Thanks for the video. I’m going to attempt to install aluminum soffit and fascia on my 1960’s ranch with 24” existing soffits. The existing soffit seemed to be recessed about an inch so I bought a firring strip to install along the back edge of the existing soffit to nail/staple the 3/8” deep j-channel into. Hopefully it’ll look okay. I can’t find anything online that explains that part very well with that kind of situation. So far I’ve just been trying to watch all I can about soffit and fascia installation and there aren’t a ton of good videos with my kind of set-up. Your videos are fantastic and your instructions are very clear...so I feel like I learn a lot. When you were nailing the first/largest piece of fascia around the bird box and you said to nail as close to the wall as you could because it would be covered with j-channel (or stone in your case, how would someone have used j-channel there in that scenario? Thanks!
Hey Farrah! Thanks a lot for watching my videos. I’m glad you are learning a thing or two. Your situation of having a furring strip in the soffit and facia nailed to it sounds like how they did it back in the day. If you were trying to install brand new soffit and then you should be able to pull it out of that strip and just slide the new soffit back into it. You were asking about the scenario where you have J channel up against the bird box. That scenario happens when you install vinyl siding on a wall. You wrap the whole perimeter of the wall in J channel before you install the siding. Hope that helps!
@@TheExcellentLaborer thanks for the quick reply. I forgot about vinyl siding...mine is stucco. Makes sense! Actually, the existing soffits are just plywood with some louvered vents here and there for ventilation. I’d just like an alternative to having to scrape and sand every few years. A maintenance-free alternative sounds really nice right about now. :) Good luck with your channel.
Would have been nice to see how you finished the soffit, I noticed you waited till you finished the fascia on the bird box and then finished the soffit, is this correct? Thanks !
I’m kinda upset Josh. I literally did all this last year to my garage. Sure coulda used ya haha. Thank god for Shannon from household improvements. Lol. Found you because I just installed trex decking. My buddies and I were shocked how good we did. Thanks for the tips buddy!
Josh... I scouted out fascia at Home Depot today. I looked at the 6” ribbed. At the bottom it had the one inch bend and then a small bend, approximately quarter inch. I rewatch yours to see if you had that. I didn’t see the additional bend. It seemed to be made to fit a 1X6.
Anyone know how to finish/cut fascia where gable meets the side? This is WITHOUT a birdbox corner and the truss ends (fascia sides soffit are flat (not the same angle as the gable trusses). Sounds strange but soffit ends are horizontal to the ground (flat 180°). Thanks
Update: I think I found your video for what I am asking about. Novice here that is building a 12 x 16 shed. Just finished the rough out of the bird boxes. Now I am looking for the complete soffit install as I watch your videos. F channel, blocking etc?
News flash ass hat, "there's more than one way to skin a cat". You skin your cat and let this guy skin his. Construction is the worst industry for people thinking their way is the only "right" way.

It came out great …thank you !

I try to put in enough time to keep my videos full and complete. I will have more videos on this subject coming out in the near future. Stay tuned!

Merci. I have seen your face enough to see that you are a professional and friendly person. ;)
Thank you, the demonstration is exactly what I needed.
Excellent! You are welcome, be sure to stay tuned for more videos to come!
Video is best I seen so far explain easy and simple. Thank you for your time!!!

Glad it helped. I used to watch DIY videos all the time and I decided to make ones that were very simple and helpful. Thanks for watching!
You're a great teacher!
I appreciate that!

How did you put the last piece of soffit in?
Great explanation
You have helped me so much Thank you
Very nice job
Thank you!
Great video 👍
I appreciate the feedback! Thank you!
Amazing video, thanks.
do you have a instruction piece on 4 on12 rafter ends. They were not plumbed at install. ty
How did you cut the soffit panels at the corner? Have a video for that?
Where do you buy the aluminum fascia?

Yes the ones are used are for one or 2 x 6 coverage. Home Depot has a pretty good selection depending on location.
Thanks

Yes I have videos install all the above!
Thx Josh .
The soffit is vented and I understand why it needs to be. Will mosquitoes and gnats be able to get through?
Thank you
Magnifico !!
Brilliant
Thanks!
veddddy nice. "Not tooo hard to do." - The Excellent Laborer. lol ... none of us excellent yet
You are excellent! I know this because your comments are hilarious. Thanks for watching!
Excelente 👌 👌
Thank you!
That little piece could have been behind the bird box wrap around. So looking up you dont see the seam.
Great, I am looking for a contractor that can do what you do.
What’s your location?
How to properly install soffit & fascia incorrectly. But I digress.

Tim, I mean no disrespect but please explain what he did wrong and how to improve it.
👍👍👍
👍.
You didn't 45 the 1 in. Bend on the bottom. Very low attention to detail.
You should use 8” fascia, then you wouldn’t have to Mickey Mouse it, with that extra strip. Sorry
Can't find the 8" pre bent where I am. Maybe he couldn't either.
Awful heavy hammer, for such small nails.
He has a punch for trim
Are you chewing gum?
