    Why didn't you show the most difficult part of the soffit job. The last far right side piece? How does it terminate at the end?

    Thanks for the demo. I have been trying to find a contractor to fix mysoffits, squirrels have ripped them out but no one wants to do small jobs. I,m pretty good at doing repairs myself For a retired woman and now I’m going to do it.

    Nails would be much more cost effective and regardless of what type of fastener you use it shouldn't be snugged. That negates the whole expansion and contraction you spoke of. Also, your fascia trim has nothing securing it at the top. Normally this would be tucked under drip edge which I get you don't have due to the metal roof but the VSI recommends using utility trim or, if you have to, face nail it. Lastly, NEVER should you put your screws (should be trim nails) through the fascia at any other point than the v-groove of the soffit panel. You put them smack dab in the center of the vented section which compromised its integrity and will cause it to fail faster, not to mention looks bad. It's cool that you're making videos to help people but you are doing it wrong. That isn't just my opinion that is according to the Vinyl Siding Institute who is kind of an authority on the subject.

    I notice you say you cut the soffit short to allow for expansion and contraction which I totally agree is a good idea. Then I noticed you put screws in the valley of your soffit material which doesn't have a slotted hole and you put the screw in tight so that the soffit can't move, the same with the screw you put in the manufactured edge which does have a sotted hole. So my question is should it not be fastened using the slotted hole and maybe make another hole in the valley to allow it to expand and contract??

    This is exactly what I was looking for. I recently bought my first house and it doesn’t have any soffit vents on it. Only plywood at around 15 degree angle with 4 vents on each side, front and back. This video made it not seem so hard for someone who has no idea on any sort of remodeling. Thank you!

    Why is it so important to install the fasteners into the 1" expansion slots and to hold the soffit back 1/4" from the f channel for that same purpose only to then install the two the screws into the two valleys without first installing/creating slots for the screws to ride in? Similarly, why install the screws so tightly - why not leave some room for the soffit to slide in and out with contraction if the goal is to allow movement? Or is it that across that 11 1/4" there won't be enough expansion to worry about?

    • @AnaIG4
      @AnaIG4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was thinking the same, he must not be in an area that gets a lot of wind, his install isn’t exactly how you should do it, you need to use the holes on the flange...

    Just a thought. When screwing up the soffit, skip a channel every once in a while. Keep track of where the blank channels are to put your fascia screws in. Very annoying when you hit a screw in the soffit when you are doing the fascia.

    • @amgbihhh2472
      @amgbihhh2472 ปีที่แล้ว

      What? That’s why you don’t put a screw where the channel is. Plus putting a screw where the channel is will make the aluminum bend into the channel if you do that. You screw into the flat part of the soffit so that it stays flat🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️. Just a thought.

    I have been in a discussion about soffit application and you mentioned leaving a little looseness in the flange connection for expansion contraction . This helps me to make my point on why you should not run nails or screws thru the material anywhere other than the slotted holes provided. Although sometimes it becomes necessary to use a trim nail here and there. The discussion is primarily about starting the soffit from top center of a rake and working down in both directions . Bending the top piece in the center and thus going backwards in one direction. I think its wrong for a few reasons.

    You talk about expansion and contraction back and forth (which is true) but then you destroy any exoansion and contraction option by basically "glueing" the soffit board to the rafters with screws, eliminating any movement. You do not put screws where you did.

  • @PhatChanceAthat
    @PhatChanceAthat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Putting 2 extra screws in each piece defeats the purpose of expansion. I have never done that or known anyone who does that. One nail in the end has always been good enough, at least in Pennsylvania. Hurricane zone may be different but I don't recommend screwing soffit. I would think it would buckle.

    Just so some people know not all soffit and fascia is the same material specially not production homes where most fascia and soffit is plywood and wood siding .. therefore the way you install it is different long pieces normally...

    why are you not using trim nails instead of screws. I don't know about screws, just don't look proper to me but I may be wrong.

    Thank you, well explained. What type saw are you using to cut soffit?

      I use my miter saw to cut them with a 60 tooth blade! Thanks for the comment my friend! Take care and god bless!

    Would you be interested in trying Quality Edge soffit and fascia to compare to what you're using today?

    that's too many fasteners for me. this stuff is SO lightweight! you only need 1 screw per section and then the trim holds the rest. i think the goal is to use fasteners only on the j or f channel or trim, and none in the actual soffit material. still trying to figure best practice for repair and maintenance on existing installation. working with this stuff is a bear.

    Exactly. What do I need to do on an old home, I just purchased. Very clean simple example. Thanks.

    I'm installing PoE cameras through my soffit. I wanted to see how this was constructed in case I botched it beyond repair. Awesome video!!
