We are leaving Africa 😱 // EP.65

  • We are leaving Africa and shipping our Land Rover Defender to South America.
We need to get everything ready, do the last service and modifications to the bluepandy before loading in the container. South Africa is one of the best places to do this, but we were not expecting some of the worst weather conditions in a decade.
First things first, we want to do a modification to our solar mount, to be able to have them on top of each other and give full space to our surf boards. It was getting pretty tiring to have to take the solar panel off when using the boards. Victitec is making a special mount for us. The quality of their build is unmatchable!
Second thing, we need to change the oil of the transmission and axles, last time was in Jordan. We go to Pon Steyn again as we trust this guy's with Land Rovers .We also need to get many new spare parts for the future. The weather gets worse and we decide to get an apartment for the week. It is not in the safest neighborhood but therefore we can afford to stay looking at Table Mountain and Lions Head.
We are lucky one day with the weather and climb table mountain, it always amazes us that such a beautiful mountain is meters away from a big city.
The time comes to put the bluepandy in the container. We decide to don't be there this time and fly to our next destination. Africa overlanders takes care of it.
This is the end of Season 2. Get ready for new adventures, first without Landy and then in South America!
    Enjoy the Ride!

The South African scenario is complicated, even when foreigners experience it, they struggle to fully comprehend the delicate intricacies of the fragile balancing act that is life there. Everyone you chat to will have a conflicting opinion (some quite wild) one can go down the rabbit hole and end up none the wiser. I am sorry you were not able to explore more of the country, particularly out of the winter rainfall area. I am pleased that you were safe and well prepared for your onward travels. Thank you for sharing you wonderful videos.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You are so right! Traveling like this means we only get a tiny glimpse of the reality of the country and what it means to live there. That's why we don't go deeper into details and rather explain what we see as a traveler. I think it's great to have a conversation, even if it's unpleasant, as in between the lines lays the truth.
We wish we had more time to explore the northeast and enjoy better weather, but the choice was made the moment we stayed longer in Namibia. 😢

Theoretically yes, we could have taken it. But it is a petrol cooker, which is kind of dangerous in interiors. And without anything working due to load shedding, fire alarm/extinguisher we didn't want to risk it in the Airbnb. Regarding the garage, we also thought that, but never found any manual latches to open the gate. We enjoyed Africa a lot and we are so happy to hear you enjoyed our videos about it. I have enjoyed you videos in Africa good luck and safe travels in South America. In terms of politics and segregation unfortunately the current government that has been in power for 30 years has failed its citizens load shedding is a classic example of tgese failures. If it where not for them stealing the money there would have been enough funding to have closed any gap in income groups by developing a robust economy. Instead they now promote this economic disparity for their political survival. As concerned South Africans we do hope the 2024 elections bring a new government that can change the current situation.

Thank you so much!! And yes, we enjoyed South Africa a lot 🤗 coming from Apartheid not long ago( 1994 is just around the corner) maybe the country didn't have time to adapt fast enough. And that segregation that once was enforced, seams to persist "naturally" as a result. We cannot state that the government is the main responsible for this as we are not informed enough to know the policies and laws that have been implemented over the years. It was shocking to see for us and we think South Africans deserve better. 😣

For me it's the time you spent with family.... that was quite rewarding set of memories I'm sure.
Seeing your picking up a few comments regarding the politics ... a thousand opinions on such a complicated subject is sad but that's why things are rarely fixed. And then there's the lost in translation issues that come with. Ah well ... I still say honesty is the best policy. You can only call it as you see it!

That was a big highlight from the whole trip, for us and for them! I guess you don't know how life on the road is until you experience it first hand. Looks like they enjoyed it, as they are already planning a second round 😜
Many avoid talking about these things openly on TH-cam, and we can understand why. The opinions are endless and sometimes honesty can damage you more than anything. But we will keep on speaking from the heart about what we see and experience, we would not want it another way. I hope these conversations don't get lost and South Africans find a common ground!

Thank you so much Markus!! We got to experience one of the rainiest winters in Cape Town though hahaha 😅 we sadly didn't have time for more and couldn't enjoy the beautiful Northeast of SA. Regarding the political/social situation, we heard many things from many different backgrounds, and the opinions vary , but there was a common denominator, nobody seams to be happy with the current status quo. We really hope South Africans can find the way back to a life they deserve. ❤️

I wish you well in South America. With your comments and negative views on South Africa it time to leave.

Thank you!! We really liked South Africa, and we think there are few places where one can live so close to nature and urban areas as in Cape Town. But like every country it has their own issues 🤷 I think is fair to talk about them during our trip, as always we are honest. I hope we see you around 😎

I really enjoy your channel and your videos, but your remarks about the reason why South Africa is the way it is are not very accurate.
There has been an incredible amount of progress made since Apartheid, and the government in place now is the reason for the state of decay (loadshedding is their fault entirely) we’re in now and a huge contributing factor to the poverty and unemployment rates.
Please use your reach to spread the correct message or none at all instead of being misinformed.

Hey Jayson, thank you for commenting! We didn't mention the reason for being South Africa how it is! We just commented our perception of the status quo. For example mentioning townships and load shedding, something we experienced first hand and saw for the first time. The reasons behind is something we are not informed about and we are not commenting about. We are glad you are taking the time to point this out! Greetings from South America!

This sort of thing was widely predicted to happen after majority black rule simply because it has happened all over Africa....obviously Zimbabwe is the most recent.
All these countries purport to be democracies (like in Europe) of course they're nothing of the sort....more often they are Oligarchies like Britain and the USA.
IT is a bad joke.....ditto your next destination Argentina....it is a matter of degree.
Usually the most powerful oligarchies rule the roost and attempt to lock up opponents like is happening in the US right now.
One thing is for sure uf you mention politics you're inviting trouble because there is always someone who will take offence at something...and there are lots of thick lumpen proletarian out there who will misconstrue what you say..
South Africa is heading for basket case territory....but only when the multinational companies profits are threatened will something happen.
This comment might not make it because You Tube have been interfering with my completely legitimate comments...so much for free speech!!.
You two have probably timed your trip right because they're planning another massive conflict in Europe probably by the end of this decade.

yeah sure...I am sure all that crime does not contribute to poverty and unemployment. Case study look at California now. ..so much crime that businesses and people are moving out but not a single word from the politicians about correcting it.... and the Governor is thinking of running for presidency. you cannot make this stuff up

@@kaysoutdooradventures955 sadly we had to pick and choose. We felt really good in Namibia and stayed longer , shortening our stay in SA as a side effect. Shipping date is not flexible as we are sharing container 😅 we wish we could see more, but sometimes one cannot have it all 😢 we will come back one day I hope! 😊
