How HIGH we can get with our Land Rover Defender? La Puna, Argentina //EP.71

- We are traveling to the second highest plateau in the world after Tibet, the Puna region in Argentina. Getting high in altitude with our Land Rover Defender, how high? Find out in the video.
This was one of the greatest adventures we have had in our lives. We see many vicuñas, llamas and Ñandus.
We start next to San Antonio de los Cobres. But we need to stay one more night at the same altitude as we are feeling some altitude sickness at 3700m in altitude.
After filling water and diesel and having some delicious lunch, we set off and drive in some of the most impressive landscapes. We climb sometimes up to 4.560m over sea level and continue down to salt lakes again. We drive next to 5.000m peaks that look extreme. We arrive in Tolar Grande where we manage to get more water and diesel. We continue to Salar Arizaro and then see the Cono de Arita. A weird-looking perfect cone in the middle of a salt lake.
We cross a gold mine and climb up in a breathtaking environment until we reach Mina la Casualidad, an abandoned mine above 4.000m. We spend our first night ever above 4.000m in altitude and we realize we have some trouble breathing.
We continue up, yes! to another mine, Mina Julia, absolutely incredible.
Enjoy the Ride!

Bravo! The views, the colors and the drone shot at 13:00, just incredible. And the cone, just so hard to imagine something like that in nature.😊 Thank you lovely people.
Thank you so so much for the nice words! But we have to say this place is such an amazing canvas. There was not enough time in the day to capture it properly really. Every single corner at the horizon was epic, really a paradise for photography. Only problem was the wind , which makes one crazy and wanting to escape. 🙈 The drone shots were possible only when the wind gave us a break 😱
What an episode ! The desolation and vistas creating changing scenery just about around every corner - magic. Bluelandy, once again, delivered superbly. Enjoy !!
Harsh and beautiful at the same time. Mars like up there, really, specially when walking on sulphur and getting inside the tunnels.
I've just watched this video again and realize I'll have to watch a lot more of them a second time. Jus too good to watch once only !
It's an amazing place on this planet! One to come back to. I have also watched the video later during the trip to remember those insane landscapes 🤩
That was an exceptional video.
Bravo!
I can't believe how dry, windy, cold, and remote that area is. It really looks like another planet -- like you were on Mars, or someplace like it. All those abandoned towns and buildings were quite freaky but at the same time, fascinating and full of curiosities.
That landscape looks like a perfect place to shoot a movie eg. a cowboy western, Star Wars, a Sci-Fi, or just a movie about 3 crazy travellers and a blue Landy!! 😉
You left us with a cliff hanger ending but I'm sure you managed to get Bluelandy up the rest of the hill somehow. (We hope!!)
Best wishes to all 3 of you -- that's some tough travel but you've brought us viewers an amazing experience to watch!
To this date, the Puna region is up in the list of favorite places of all time. It is something you are not prepared for and cannot even believe how is possible to see so much beauty for hours. This is a perfect place to shoot such movies you mention, but they need to deal with the wind. Which was crazy and maddening!
For sure this was and adventure that brought us together as a team, specially at the last part of the video where we got stuck in a very dangerous place.
@@Thebluelandy Thanks for putting together that video, despite the challenges you must of had trying to film. It was epic!!
I think this video is one of your best and most beautiful and interesting. Fantastic and thank you sharing your amazing experiences.
Thank you so so much! For sure it is one of our favorite places of all time, so most probably it also shows! Really a place to visit and experience the out of this world landscapes and lack of oxygen!
Wow. I can’t remember ever saying WOW so many times during a TH-cam video, stunning. Thank you so much for sharing. Looking forward to the next video.
We couldn't stop either during our time in the Puna region. Absolutely epic. A place a would come back everytime if I am looking for adventure and want to explore mars looking trails. It is a place to experience at least once in a lifetime , really 🙋♀️
Breathtaking. And so well done
Thank you so much for your feedback ❤️ really appreciate it 🤗🤗
It looks like another planet, until you sit around the fireplace for dinner. Very civilised. Blue Landy is performing like a champion.
It sure does! You question yourself how it is possible to reach this places with a car . It is incredibly surreal to be in such a harsh environment and then having a nice dinner around the fire, that tops the whole experience. The bluelandy is performing incredibly, but it's showing signs of age now and then. But as we say, the Defender it's always sick but it never dies. ✌️
Very nice places you are visiting. Incredible. I didnt know that Argentina has such mountain region. Enjoy your trip.
Argentina is a dream to overland. And even to live (if it was not for the economy of course). But the Andes are breathtaking and the Argentines are so awesome. I (Irati) love chatting with everyone here, they are really nice people ❤️❤️❤️
That dinner at the lost town with fireplace... desperatly needs J. M. Jarre - Oxigene theme )))
Yeah! It felt kind of our of this planet, so the song would go really good there!
Love the fire place!!!! How civilized.
It was really incredible and super cozy to have a fireplace over 4000m . The dinner was delicious and with a tea and the heat from the fireplace, we were in peace and ready for a high altitude night. One of my favorites campspot of all time, and the fireplace was key to get it high in the list!
Whaoo ! Amazing. De retour dans l'incroyable !! Bravo.
Merci Laurent!!

Loving Argentina so much!❤️
o wow! Those orange curly roads look surreal! So beautiful!
The path it's called Las siete curvas , the seven corners! Is the steepest part of the desert and it offers some of the most beautiful views of the red soil mountains. Thank you for watching and commenting 🤗🤗
Super, super, super! Toller Clip, tolles Auto, absolut irre Landschaft.
Hey Roland, Vielen vielen dank!
Why does the snow on the Puna melt into fins?? I've seen that in other videos, especially Iohan Gueorguiev's. I've never seen that phenomenon in Canada, even in our near-desert regions. That feeling that you have to consciously inhale is usually caused by anxiety, being short of breath can cause anxiety, which causes shortness of breath, it's a feedback loop in the mind. What an awesome adventure!
What an incredible video!!!, thank you for being brave souls and taking us along this nail bitting journey. I was concerned about the caves at the mines, how reliable were their roofs? The landscape had the hallmarks of a different planet. Keep safe.
It was an epic adventure! Not sure about the stability of the walls, but we were more concerned about gases inside, that's why we didn't go in much! The landscape is really alien looking and takes your breath away everytime you stop to look. Amazing to be able to see it with a Land Rover Defender 😎
Another great video we love watching your travels. We have been travelling for more than twenty years around the world but mostly backpacking and now encouraged and inspired by what we have seen; we are planning our 1st overland trip from Australia to Iceland.
Thanks Again, Keep Safe & Have Good Adventures

Enjoyed the ride. Beautiful remote landscapes are always a winner. Thanks for taking us with. Safe travels
Glad you enjoyed it, any time
God bless you guys well done and have a wonderful time
Thank you!!! We will. Greetings from beautiful Patagonia ❤️
thank you very much for sharing! the most entertaining video so far! good luck guys!
Thank YOU for watching. We enjoyed this place like no other. It is something we were not prepared for and really was out of the charts in terms of epicness. I guess you can feel it from our reactions. Thank you for the comment and feedback 🤗🤗
i hope .... see YOU soon!! Thank you very much!!
Yeah!!! Hope to continue sharing soon!
Yeah!!! Hope to continue sharing soon!
Astonishing places!!
Really out of this world! A place we will remember for ever. 😱😍
Fantastic! What a trip.
It was an epic adventure 🤸 one for the books 😎
Have to say, that was an excellent episode.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! So happy that you enjoyed, for us it was an epic adventure and it is a pleasure to share it. 🤗
Incredible trip. There are few places in the world with landscapes similar to those of the Puna.
I don't know if there is any really! At least in this altitude. It is very special looking and extremely harsh at the same time. A place to see at least once in a lifetime 🤯
amazing expansive colorful..enjoyed this video so much!
just wow
It was incredible, there was so much to see around it was overwhelming sometimes 😱 really a place to see at least once in a lifetime 🤯
Absolutely incredible video!!
Thank you for sharing. What a place, like being on another planet. You are inspiring me to get back to work on my 110 to try to be on the road in the spring.
Best wishes. I can't wait to see what is to come🔥😊🖐️
Good luck for you and the landy, I can tell you it’s worth to go the extra mile, and really prepare the landy. It pays off in the end that’s why we didn’t really had any serious trouble
@@Thebluelandy Thank you.
Ours is an old 300tdi 110, she had been sat for several years in the elements, so lots of rubbing and painting. Then we can start to think about campering her out. It's a long road but when I see videos like yours, I can see what is possible.
Keep traveling, keep exploring, one life😊🖐️
Don’t loose the patients It took me also 6 years on weekends and after work to get the car into this state. And I will need to do a lot of things when we’re back one day 😅
I am glad I found your channel. It is excellent to watch: the drone shots, narrative, music, etc are very good. I'm not an overlander (yet), but an explorer myself. If you ever get to the Yucatan Peninsula in your travel north, drop me a line and I can show you some amazingly remote & beautiful places here. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for watching and following along. As well as leaving a comment 🤗 we really appreciate this ! Colombia will our last stop in the Americas 🌎
@@Thebluelandy OK. It is a pity you will not make it farther north than Colombia. But I understand you'll have your reasons for sure. Enjoy the rest of your South America trip anyway. All the best!
great video thankyou some fantastic seanary all the best take care
Thank you so much George! It was really an stunning place and super harsh at the same time. Beautiful ❤️
Very interesting clip, enjoyed immensely.
Thank you!! It was really epic 😱😍
What a brutal harsh but .Beautiful landscape .Almost alien looking .Love to see the Llamas in there natural enviroment.Once again fantastic video and drone work.
It was really brutal! One of those places that look stunningly beautiful but so dangerous at the same time. The llamas 🦙are living their best life there 😍
unbelievable views my gosh!
It was insane yes! So good that one wants to come back to check more of it. Really a place to see at least once in a lifetime 😱
Emozioni allo stato puro... Grazie, e sempre buona strada al Defender e al suo avventuroso equipaggio!
La verità è che questo posto è di per sé un'avventura. 😱
stunning video! Weiter viel Glück !💪💪
Vielen Dank 🤩
La Casualidad processed sulfur from Julia, it was abandoned near 1990.
Yes!! Such a unique mine!
I can’t wait for the next episode!!! I’ve had my Jeep JL above 4200m in Colorado but this looks spectacular!!!!
And how did it perform? Our bluelandy loses power above 4000m, at 5000m it didn't feel different though. But we personally did feel the lack of oxygen for sure 😳 next episode, more adventure and also epic locations.
I still need to sit down to edit, but it will take a bit as family is visiting and priorities change 🙋♀️
Those elevations is where it really pays off to have a turbo to feed the engine air. This trip reminds me of the trip ‘Top Gear’ took a few years ago with a vintage Range Rover, Land Cruiser and Jeep.
Love this episode In Bolivia! but I have to it was not as bad or difficult as is seems in top gear 😅
@@ThebluelandyThey had a particularly speedy exit from Argentina!
Friggin Awesome.....wow....you really hit it out of the park. How many vehicles did you pass in the 5,000 meters?
Thanks! Up at the mine was just one other car, a tour guide with two clients l.
The Webasto petrol heaters stop working at 3000m, but the diesel heaters are rated up to 5700m. Glad yours is working so well! Looks cold but awesome adventure!
I believe webasto sells a high altitude version. but every one that we met on the road couldn’t use their heater over 3000m. Nowadays I don’t like to promote Russian products. But I think webasto is overpriced and over engineered
I’ve been in a vehicle at 5000 metres, it was very slow due to the low oxygen levels, I was fine until I got out of the vehicle, felt incredibly light headed and took me a few good deep breaths before I could walk anywhere, and even then very slowly.
The bluelandy starts to lose power at 4000m in altitude. From there we haven't felt it get worse(exponentially or so). It was really having no issue to start( well , we ha problems with the starter, but that's another story), cold temperatures was worse.
Regarding us, we didn't have problems with altitude sickness there, we did a good acclimatization the previous days and our bodies were prepared. But this kind of altitude is no joke. And this particular day was extremely windy!
If you like this then you will love Bolivia, Chile and Peru.
We hope so!! For the moment Argentina is stealing our hearts. I cannot imagine something getting even better, that would be really insane 😱
Hey guys, thanks for sharing your travels with us. Just a thought- rocks are an important part of the habitat for all kinds of small creatures, especially in sensitive desert ecosystems. That barrier wall you’re creating is potentially really disruptive. It’s also not following ‘leave no trace’ principles to leave it there when you leave camp. Perhaps you can come up with some sort of reusable barrier that you carry with you?
Safe travels ✌🏽
Hey and thanks for your comment. In this case I really have to disagree with you. You are right stones can or are part of the ecosystem. In this case we are in a desert that’s basically made out of stones. There is no shortage of stones to hide. And the only sign of life that we found lifting stones was toilet paper….. I think leaning the walls is not a problem if there is a good build shelter other travelers will not need to build additional wind protection and therefore not move more stones. Additional this were places that are crisscrossed by road and paths a small Wall that can even habitat for lizards has not really an impact.
A reusable barrier is not really possible, there are wind gusts from over 50kp/h and the soil is so rocky that you hardly can use tent nails…
I don't agree! In many remote areas people (like nomads in the desert) have always built shelters for protection against wind/storm/sand. It is in the rules of nature that human beings have a brain to survive in rough conditions (as shown!) and this will not at all disturb the balance of nature.

"There's always one" as the saying goes.....it is possible during the construction of that wall that the rare "High Altitude Andean Jumping Spider" might have received injuries!!.....nasty.!.
That was great. Love the remote adventures.
BTW what size tank do you have? Ours has a 120 litre tank from Long Ranger, plus it is possible to add another 35 litre tank to gravity feed to the main tank.
Thank you, we only have an additional 45L in the wheel arch, therefore we roughly have 115L. Would have been enough for the loop even without buying the 18L but better save then sorry
Episodio maravilloso! Me dais mucha envidia. No puedo remediarlo.
👉found salt 🧂 liked in in NAMIBIA 🇳🇦 AND BOTSWANA 🇧🇼, AFRICA 🌍,,,,
Yes, many salt lakes with flamingos 😍
Ride enjoyed....the cameraman managed to capture the atmosphere tres bien.....very bleak landscape Los Pumas 🏉 are going to have to be smart to get hold of those Llamas....no cover!.....they seem to be very relaxed?!.
Mars is pretty awesome to capture ✌️ landscape is out of this world really, there was not enough time to capture all what our eyes saw. Those llamas are pretty chilled in the open fields, the pumas don't have much chance there. But as we talked to the locals, pumas kill cattle when they can during the night. 🐆
Canon G7x ?
Bravo..
Christophe
Nous formons une super équipe ! Le Defender est une bête ! Nous utilisons un Canon 90D et un Sony zv1. 🤗
Very nice video. Do you guys have a long range tank or the original?
Thank you 😊
We got an additional long range tank in the rear wheel arch. Total capacity is roughly 117L
Beautiful video
Beautiful landscape but careful it aint good for you and the landys health 😂😂😂
You are so right, this was really tough for us and the Landy. Specially the cold, the wind and the dryness of the place. But all this made the place even more incredible 😱
👋🏻🤠🇫🇮
Hey!!🤗🤗🤗
What mileage you getting and wonder how much you spent in fuel.
Hey, good question, we average over all 10,3L/100km (this includes the use of the diesel heater). In Puna we went up to 14L due to the altitude and a lot of off-road driving. The average fuel cost is between 0,80€ and 1€ per liter at the moment.
Now we know where NASA make their films and claim they reached Mars.
They have the perfect canvas really, really out of this world. 🤯
