- We are exploring and surfing the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. A rough and raw landscape full of skeletons and shipwrecks, but also one of the most remote places to surf.
After many months traveling around Africa we finally reach the Atlantic Ocean. We are so happy to be back at the coast and enjoy the sea breeze and the sound of waves. We are lucky with the weather and enjoy blue skies in an area where normally one can only find fog and cold.
We stay as north as possible, next to the entrance to Skeleton Coast National Park. Kai asks about white sharks, and gets a green light from the fishermen, to go in the water to surf. After nearly a year without surfing, it was going to be interesting to get back in such a harsh location, with huge currents and messy swells. But it is always worth getting in the water, feeling the ocean and getting connected to nature. This coast is rough but absolutely beautiful. it is where the desert meets the ocean, two powerful and dangerous elements. and staying in the meeting point is a reminder of how small we are and how this place is so deadly.
We stop shortly in Henties Bay, to get our pantry full, eat some seafood in Fishy Corner and stay at a campsite to be able to upload our TH-cam video.We are back on the road, this time in Cape Cross. Here we find many traces of jackals and hyenas. But also many dead seals as the seal colony is just around the next bend. Jackals, hyenas, seagulls, and other small animals take care of the remains of the seal, keeping the beach clean, and contributing to the ecosystem. It is a raw sighting but it is part of nature. Kai gest to surf again, but it's not good, and he actually hurts his back. We decided to stay in Swakopmund for a couple of days, rest , and eat well. We stayed at Salty Jackal Backpackers, the only surf hostel in Namibia. The place feels like a small home, perfect to get to know people and sharing some tips about surfing. Kai is finally fit and gets to experience one more surf in one of the most beautiful locations, where cormorants fly or dive next to you and behind you a wall of sand dunes.
