The Legend Of The Most Controversial Video Title
_edit: I was incorrect about MKDD being the last game to show you CPU times. MK Wii showed CPU times in GP mode BUT ONLY in GP mode; So while unfortunate it doesn't tell you times when playing with your friends, it is still technically the last MK to show finish times._

An underrated mechanic that no one mentions ever but I appreciate is that the characters stack the items in their hands and if you get hit before using them you lose all of them besides 1, adds another layer to the focus on items in this game.

I think the 64/SNES/Gamecube ones were mostly people born between 1985 and 1996 whom grew up playing one of the earlier Mario Kart games either on the SNES (Super Famicom), NIntendo 64, or Gamecube. Personally, I'm glad my siblings and I got to experience the PS1 and N64, consoles, along with the Sega Saturn, that introduced 3D graphics into the console, but also allowed 2D gaming, and heck, with the PS1 being powerful enough to emulate arcade games and even past video games, compliations and collections of many old 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and even arcade games straight into the PS1, makes it one of the most nostalgic consoles, along with the N64, of all time. When the PS2 came out, not only could it play DVDs + CDs (Both listening to music and movies), but it also allowed you to play all of the PS1 games you had back on the PS1 now playable on the PS2, along with PS2 games on the same console.
For the gamecube, well, N64 games were NOT compatible with the gamecube, so unfortunately you had to still use an N64 to play N64 games while the gamecube went with min-dvd discs which didn't have a lot of storage, but was much more feasible and cheaper to produce than cartridges. Still though Nintendo was able to re-release Ocarina of Time on the gamecube with the extra maps, but all of the previous N64 games (Pokemon Stadium - Mario Party 3) were completely stuck on the console until the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel came along. And sometimes you were hoping an N64 game you wanted to play was on there. Otherwise, unfortunately, you'll have to stick with the console until emulation got good enough to be playable on a PC/Mac/Linux. These days, I do recommend playing it on emulators as they look 3x better than playing it on a CRT/Modern TV.
And to be honest, it's kind of nostalgic and almost heartwarming to know it's been twenty years since that game came out. I was only 7 years old when F-Zero GX, Kirby Air Ride, Ham-Ham Heartbreak, Mario Golf Toadstool Tour (One of my favorite golf games to play to this very day), Mario Party 5, and Mario Kart Double Dash ALL released within the same exact year, 2003. I do think ever since 2003 Nintendo really hasn't been able to produce so many games released within a span of months as 2003 did. Considering both Nintendo didn't like the gamecube and N64, it made sense why developers didn't like it as much as third party companies didn't like it either, but the specs of the gamecube and what you can pull off despite the setbacks, made it still a fun console to play that took risks that unfortunately in later generations, were never brought over into the present day.
I do think that if the gamecube games are re-released on the Switch, either as separate games to buy or done digitally, they'll be able to have some sort of online mode to it, and alos 16 player multiplayer/grand prix options that I do think kids these days might want to go for the frantic crazy hectic insane type of gameplay Double Dash brings compared to Mario Kart Wii does. Even then I still find the Wii game to be 3x harder to beat than the gamecube game itself, but that's just me.

Growing up I'd play this all the time with my friends and my best friend and I got really good on sharing a kart said the person not driving could punch other players. Since I was better at handling the steering controls and we had good communication of when to use items, and punching actually pushed the kart out more, we became an unstoppable duo. • @emilieyang6192
    @emilieyang6192 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

One thing that I think bears mentioning is the voice acting that adds to the chaos of the game. Most characters, when hit by something seemingly trivial like a shell, they actually yell and panic (future games they mostly just grunt; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe really dropped the ball in terms of impact IMO; just hit someone with a shell in Double Dash versus Mario Kart 8 or Mario Kart Wii). Getting blown up causes the rear character to be dragged (and makes you prone to getting shoved by others, it invalidates your weight). This is on top of the momentum you mention in the video. Also this game has pretty quotable and hilarious voice acting like "Hi I'm Daisy", "Take-a that!", "Oh yeah, who's number one now? Luigi", "No, no, no, no, no." The Koopas, when paired together and get hit, sometimes play the same clip, but have different pitch so you hear this chaotic noise. Double Dash wouldn't be the same if the characters weren't hollering.
I also like throwing the items forward in this game more than other games, like the banana. Bananas in later games don't have these physics, they just look static. Not in this one, you see them opening up while being thrown. I love the little animations like that. Also the juggling or holding the triple items, makes the game look even more precarious. I kind of like how Double Dash doesn't even let you drag items (this wasn't even mentioned and IMO it's a big unique thing of this game) so you actually have to position yourself to block a red shell.
You also notice the sense of speed between the games. The other Mario Karts feel sluggish compared to Double Dash. I think Double Dash also shines on its relatively narrow roads while future Mario Kart games have this trend of widening the roads so much and reducing the amount of responsiveness you have on your kart; this is also compounded with the rear character providing visual feedback of how you steer and showing the sense of chaos the game thrives on. Just compare taking the bridge boost panel shortcut in Dino Dino Jungle in Double Dash versus later games; it's a lot more precarious in Double Dash due to the narrower road and more sensitive turning. And racing games thrive on that sense of danger that other Mario Karts just don't quite replicate.
I personally find the Egg the worst item. It has a pretty short range unlike a red shell (it breaks a lot sooner than you think so if you're decently trailing, it's not very useful), it releases items that can benefit your enemies (I've taken stars and Mushrooms from eggs that hit me; Bob-ombs that fly out are very easily avoided). Sure you can throw it in first to snag that rare star or a mushroom or so (most of the time it's just shells, bananasm or Mushrooms in an awkward spot) I guess but it's not that great of a benefit. Also its tracking kind of sucks (on par with red shell). Most of the time you'd rather get a red shell.

I’m surprised you never mentioned this in your video, but the interesting thing about blue shells is that you can dodge them when you perform a mini turbo “skillfully.” This happens often if you’re snaking with the Diddy Kong Barrel.
Another critique I would add that you didn’t mention was regarding red shells. The problem with reds in this game is that they suck at hitting the player if the racer is approaching a huge turn with the Wario Colosseum and Rainbow Road helix being the biggest examples of reds missing their targets. The other way people are able to dodge reds easily is by snaking in a straightaway as the red will be confused when it comes to tracking the racer. Besides that this is a top 3 Mario Kart game. If any Mario Kart game deserves a remake for the Switch it would be this one.

    • @SuperFlashDriver

Believe it or not, i was able to avoid red shells while drifting as well. For blue spiny shells though, those are hard to miss, but if done right, it's amazing to pull off and you may be left there thinking that was freakin' awesome to avoid.

    • @mikesinibaldi5918
      @mikesinibaldi5918 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

I actually think the red shells not being perfectly accurate is a really good mechanic. It forces the racer with the red shell to actually think about when to throw the shell out, as unlike the new games, red shells don't handle ramps and tight turns well. It's also worth noting that since you can't hold items behind your kart in this game, the defending player has to time tossing an item backward to destroy an incoming red shell, which i personally really enjoy, as it very satisfying to pull off.

@@mikesinibaldi5918 I don’t think the problem with Deluxe’s reds is that they are amazing at tracking people, it’s that they are way too common of an item to pull. Because of this combined with the fact that racers now can hold two items make being in the middle of the pack a nightmare when it comes to online. There are many problems with Deluxe’s item system and the reds are one of the most notorious examples people being up.

I take issue with you calling Mario Kart 8's inclusion of the Koopalings as "lazy." As an older Mario fan, I was excited to see them included as individual characters. Their character designs tend to be quite distinct - with some overlapping "clone" body types - so it makes sense to have them as 7 distinct characters rather than "Light Koopaling," "Medium Koopaling," and "Heavy Koopaling." I don't see how including 7 new characters is "lazy" at all. I understand characters like Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach who are blatant roster padding using existing characters, but the Koopalings are all distinct from one another.

different times. you see, back in your day, the koopalings were indeed individuals, with very distinct identities in the cartoon, and WIIILD attacks in the games, another important part here is mario 3 was made on NES. that machine didnt have a lot of space to use for new stuff, so each koopaling being individuals was a HUGE deal, these devs intended for these bosses to be remembered! then they vanished.
      for a LOOOOOOOONG time.
fast forward to his day, the koopalings finally return in NEWWW SUPER MARIO BROS, WEEHEEE! except, we have a problem. *when* the kooplings returned, it wasnt with fanfare, it was with boss fights.
why'zat a problem? because at this point in time, mario RPG was out a long time ago, the paper games did strides in making a world with individuals, mario & luigi had slapstick violence (and koopalings, but for some reason handheld games dont count so shhhhhh), sunshine had a billion talking piantas, luigis mansion, and need I mention GALAXY!!! needless to say, the kooplins were up against some *fierce* competition.
they werent prepared to face it.
when all you have is boss fights, compared to EVERYTHING above, you will not stand out to A audience that's had this much mario to play. even worse, when the koplins DID finally get personality, it was in the sequel to the game that (allegedly) ruined the paper mario series! with that baggage, I imagine people would HATE the k'plins, hold 'em up as figureheads for what was wrong with nintendo at the time!
and that's why some people think mario kart k'pl'ns are lazy.

This entry has grown on me over the years. My first experience with this game was inside this game room at this diabetes center on this kiosk that also had one for the N64. They looked pretty cool, but I didn't think much about Double Dash for years until my brother found me a copy. When I finally tried it after all those years, I really didn't like the controls. Later on I realized the controls and drifting were kind of similar to Diddy Kong Racing where you can dodge items by drifting. Both games have controls new people will probably not like at first, but with practice with the game's mechanics, you can do some crazy stuff. Look at those barrel rolls speedrunners do in Spacedust Alley. Some pretty insane stuff. You can get some insane speed with well timed boosts. Please review that game someday. I feel like it deserves more attention. Maybe a Diddy Kong Racing vs Crash Team Racing video since they both have an adventure mode with their own unique structure and controls.

Compared to Mario Kart 64 on Nintendo’s previous home console, I personally feel that this game was a lot more polished from start to finish, owed largely to the course design and the improvements to multiplayer. I do wish there was just a bit more single player content, and I do have my gripes with the gameplay, but I really feel like this is one of those games where sale numbers compared to the rest of its series doesn’t tell the whole story. A couple of small things but still really neat. Another thing is that Luigi Circuit actually has 2 different versions. One where you can drive into opposing racers and one where you can't, though i think the one where you can't is 50cc exclusive. Can definitely see alot where you are coming from with the verdict! During the verdict I had compared DD a bit to Splatoon 1. Such has how you probably might have to take a bit to adjust to the game if you are someone who has only played the newer entries. I also compared them in the sense that both games took risks (moreso S1 because it was a new IP ‘n all and it could be updated) and even if not all of the risks went well, I still give it some points for trying. Such as Splatoon 1 with its maps, even though it had some weaker ones such as Moray Towers, Saltspray Rig, and Camp Triggerfish, I still give the maps some credit since you couldn’t really find anything like them anywhere else. Also both games are chaotic lol, and did alot for the series. Not saying that all games have to take risks since there’s no need to reinvent the wheel, but it can help keep things interesting if done right.

17:57 I honestly barely hear anything about Wii Stan’s shitting on Double Dash, so I really don’t know where that’s coming from. For me, I love Mario Kart Wii and that’s my favorite in the series, but I actually played Double Dash before it and I still absolutely love the game for its uniqueness and charm. I come back to both every once in a while and while they both control very differently, I prefer that due to Double Dash having such a unique setup. On top of that, Double Dash is easily one of the most nostalgic games for me, especially with the music and the game’s version of Rainbow Road. Both are awesome games and Double Dash is ranked 3rd in Mario Kart games behind Wii and 8. Also Mario Kart Wii does have the CPUs times in races, it didn’t end with Double Dash.

Double Dash was my first Mario Kart, as well as my first GameCube game. Going back, the controls are a lot worse than newer games in the series, although I can't compare it to earlier games, since I haven't played them. I really enjoyed it at the time, though. If anybody's interested in taking a look at an evolution on the double racer mechanic, I'd recommend Gensou Skydrift. Instead of having a person and a cart, you have two people, one of which rides atop the other. The character on the bottom determines driving characteristics, and the character on top handles items. You can hit a button to swap who's on top, which is very good for changing handling characteristics for dealing with corners.
Unfortunately the game's course design is pretty bad.

The ability to actually play co-op by sharing a single kart is the reason this will always be my favorite Mario Kart game. I had so much fun doing this with friends, and even people who don't normally care for Mario Kart can have fun just being the person in the back using the items while the other one does all the driving. It's such a unique mechanic, and future games not having it is 100% the reason why I never really played or cared about any of them much (except DS, but that was more the combination of it being portable and having better single-player content). I played Wii and 8, but without a co-op mechanic like DD, I didn't get anywhere near the same kind of mileage out of those.

I mean, if you think that's nostalgic, think about the commercials that were advertising the product. A freakin' airport with ladies and gentlemen in slow go karts literally throwing luggage at each other, that was fun to watch. Or Kirby Air Ride's commercial which for a long time it felt like a fever dream, similar with Pokemon Channel's USA commercial. I love this game, it's always been my favorite if all the Mario Karts.
Some other stuff i want to mention with the driving is how bouncy it is too whenever you land.
I remember the first time i saw the springs on Mario & Luigi's karts, thinking it was a cool little detail on them.
And i was amazed when i saw they had “a function“ to help the landing (in my mind as an 7 year old).
Another detail i loved was how the second character swayed everytime you made the smallest turn.
It felt like they hold on as best they could, and sometimes help keeping the karts balanced.
The way they held their item was really cool, juggling shells and mushrooms when they had more than one.
Some stages had shortcuts that was a risk to take, but so satisfying when you made it.
And lastly; the fact that if lucky, you could escape the red shell if you where fast enough. Like the shells where on some kind of timer until it gives up.
