Excellent review. I'm about to upgrade from Gen 3 to Gen 4. Only reason being that the headband has flattened and it hurts my head now. Great to hear that I won't notice any huge differences in the sound quality or comfort.
I auto played onto this after following a tutorial to replace the battery on my Gen 1. Wowzers. Talk about scientific analysis... Got a sub RTINGS. No fluffing about in this video. To the point and deeper then EVER expected.
Great review. Was really impressed by your technique in comparing sound quality. Only thing I noticed was in the mic test the gen 3 mic was noticeably further away from the dummy than the 4th gen ~ resulting in a not so fair test. Other than that thanks!
Agreed. They are perfect now after the last firmware update. Much louder and the headphones are recognized now when turning my xbox on without disconnecting and reconnecting the base station.

@@SavedbyGracethroughFaithAlone as far as I know, the docking station stays on all the time when the headphones are in docking station. You don't have to worry about it over charging them either.
I wonder if the connectivity issues were fixed for Gen 4. My gen 3 xbox version loves to cut out sound for a few seconds. Sometimes it'll do it a few times per minute. It's very annoying having to watch movies or TH-cam with my mouse always ready to rewind because the headset cut out and I missed what was said in the video. I think it helped it a little by disabling my wifi router's 5ghz frequency and only using 2.4ghz. It did not make the problem go away completely, but that is the only thing that ever had any positive effect on the issue. I would switch brands, but they really have no competition in the role they fill. I have a big head and ears too, and the Astros are the rare breed that fit. I wanted to love the Arctis Pro, but they were too tight.
Any testing you could do regarding internet speeds. My gen 2s interfere with my wireless speeds considerably a drop from 90mbits to 20 if the base station is on. I was appalled to learn it was my astros causing the problem. I use 5ghz
fadzrul afiq Just my personal opinion is the Astros have more of a boom and bass more immersive sound but the Arctic pro have better mids and highs for smal detail sounds like foot steps in a FPS game. If I played story driven games I would go for the comfort of the Astros and the sound on them. I only really play COD and I still pick the Astros because of comfort and if you look on reddit everyone’s steel series are breaking at the ear cup, I think the Astros are better built and I love the base station to dock my headset. But the Arctic Pros are damn good and sound loud as hell. You can download some custom eqs for the Astros that make them sound even better from Zalias.

I watched another review video & that reviewer says it took less than 2 hours to fully charge them on the base station but mine took a little over 5 hours. After watching this video yours charge in about the same time so idk if that's normal charge time or if we got some slow charging units lol. Very nice & really professional video btw keep it up!
I get multiple complaints from friends saying the mic sounds like shit... and after this review I can tell what they mean. The gen 3 boom mic is garbage. Glad my Gen 4 is in the mail right now!
Nice review. But what about the Astro Sound v2 and Dolby Audio on the Gen 4? The Gen 4 is also 3d Audio Ready. Thats a big improvement compared to the Gen 3!
so first off I like to say awesome review most in-depth I have seen on the headset. the question I do want to know is, I have the gen3 and sometimes audio will cut out for 1-2 seconds then come back. I think it may have something to do with the connectivity to the base station but not sure. the base station is less than a foot away so the distance should not be an issue. also, I am not the only one to have this problem others that I know that have the headset experience this too. the firmware is up to date but still happens any ideas on how to correct this as playing an FPS and losing footstep sounds even for a second is rough
Astro still does not have a mute button, but requires the mic boom to be moved completely to the up position in order to mute the mic. I have no problem with the mic muting with the boom movement to the full up position, but I prefer a mute button so I can quickly mute the mic during a cough, sneeze, or whenever. Having to move the mic completely up each time is a pain in the ass. It would be better to also have a button. It also has problems with detecting the headset on the Xbox console. It occasionally is not detected, which requires unplugging and re-plugging the USB port. The headset base station is very finicky when placing the headset for charge. I am overall not a fan of these headsets and it does not look like they improved on any of these issues with the Gen 4.
One major thing not addressed is the impact on sound that the surround sound creates. On gen 3 it made everything sound like it had double reverb, and very metallic. Gen 2 did not have this problem. I enjoyed the review, however the Gen 3 Astros kinda have a wired mode, you can charge it while playing and it still works, then you can take it off to. Also you didn't cover that the new base station is easier to connect the headset with because of the built in magnets, while the gen 3 can be finicky
I wouldnt mind as set of Gen 4s, however, i think ill wait for Astro to re-update them with a usb c connector. Cmon Astro $400 cdn for a heaset in 2019? It should be a usb c connector. I know, Astro isnt the only company that needs to ditch the micro usb.
Gen 3 docking has issues. Design and or magnet power isn't enough to easily dock the headset for charging. Sometimes It takes 5 or 6 adjustments to get contacts to meet. The turtle beaches I had you could toss across the room and they would dock and charge. This is frustrating if you try to charge between games. I havent heard if the gen 4 docking is easier (and probably why the dock cradles got changed) Gen 3 is top notch headset, except for frustrating charge docking.
I have recently bought the astro a50 gen 4 headset for my ps4 slim and i set it up with Hdmi cable from tv-> hdmi audio converter then optical cable from audio converter -> basestation then micro usb -> usb on ps4 slim. Everything is fine except when i press voice or game on the right earcup all audio goes loud or quiet. I have messed around in command centre and updated everything but it still does that. I have seen ppl say to set it to just chat audio but then I can only hear game audio out the tv but I want it in the headset aswell. Otherwise it is a great headset. Thanks in advance.
I have the gen 3. I was going to upgrade to gen 4 but bought the Audeze Mobius instead. Glad to see this video put my doubts at ease as to whether I should have gotten gen 4 or not.
Why the latencies mentioned in this video (gen4: 17ms and gen3: 39ms) are different from the non-BT latency measurement in rtings.com (gen4: 80ms and gen3: 99ms)? Are these some different measurements or is the data wrong in this video?
I got the A50 about a year ago and compared to other headsets, I just cant hear footstep positions clearly with the A50, which for me, is the single most important thing for a gaming headset.. Fiddling with EQ settings didn't help either. Also, the extra option, for the "amazing" Dolby sound, makes it sound absolutely terrible, I've literally never used it, it's rubbish in comparison to Dolby off, lol.
Was hoping they had fixed the balance between bass and treble much better, but it seems this isn't the case at all. So if I didn't like the gen 3 I don't see myself liking the gen 4,damn.
Gen 3 docking station can be finicky. If you dont make sure headset seated properly it will not charge. Cant tell you how many times I gamed way to late into the night and woke up to a almost dead headset. Non issue on gen 4. Also to note is the gen 4 earcups most definately are ever so slightly smaller in internal diameter, meaning they touch my ears. That in combination of being black versus gray it feels like putting earwarmers on. This really bothered me in the beginning but Ive gotten used to it. The biggest turn off has been months of the base station freezing up on the xbox variant with no solution until recently and no mention of that problem in any reviews I have watched inluding this one. It gets old unplugging the usb every powercycle. I did just see the firmware finally has a update as of yesterday for me. Sounds like it will solve the freezing and low volume issues. Happy about thay but shouldn't have had to wait months for a solution.
i can hear the difference between the sample song and when you swap to the headsets with my klipsch pro media 2.1, the headphones lose a bit of mid bass and sound minuscule hollow. where as the sample track is a bit fuller sounding. I have the Gen 1 a50's just trying to figure out if its worth it.
Just goes to show the Gen 3’s were nearly perfect as is. They couldn’t really improve on them a whole lot. No surprise there - they’re the best headset I’ve ever owned.
Hi Rtings I would like to suggest you all test out VRR on the LG Oleds as they now show up in the nvidia G-sync compatible certified list and it says the TV supports 40-120 Hz of range.
I own the ps4 a50 gen3 and and use them on Xbox also just brought an Xbox base off ebay. When I want to use them I put them on the base that’s connected to the device I want to play $40
One thing I'm annoyed at about the gen 3 with the leather ear cups is that those cups are just so slightly larger so when you dock the headset it doesn't easily charge because the two cups touch. You really have to fiddle with it or remove one of them. It just seems dumb considering it's such a premium product. Also, the range on these is absolute trash.
I've been testing many different headsets this year and since I'm a huge bass junkie (explosions, gunshots, etc really need to sound powerful for me), tried the Plantronics, Astro A50 G3, and Turtle Beach Elite 800x and I actually ended up with the last one. For me best balance between highs and lows. A50 was great with the bass but it would drown out the highs, when I had a EQ mode where the highs were great the bass would be weak. I wonder how that is on this new one.
I have the Ps4 Gen 3 version and they tend to just have a bunch of audio distortion and eventually just don’t work. I’ve rebooted it, updated it and have everything lined up for it to work and it still happens.
Would the dolby atmos option for xbox do anything to increase the performance of the gen4 vs gen3 ? I would have thought the gen4 was more of a sound quality upgrade for footsteps and surround detail
MY own experience with this is I need to 100% DISABLE any and ALL other things like Mixamp for instance. Then take ANY standard pair of headphones and run it using ONLY the Dolby 7.1 App. NOW you will hear sound as close to natural in a 7.1 environment. Of course the better the headphones, the better the sound & experience. Currently I prefer my Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium Edition 250 Ohm Over-Ear-Stereo Headphones Open design from Germany -NOT China!- - And my Audio Technica ATH-AD700X Audiophile Headphones BOTH of these run through my Schiit Magni 3 Headphone Amp and Preamp.

@@Evjen97 So I bought the Virtuoso white version for $140 last week. I liked it so much that I returned it and got the SE all-metal version. Be warned though, it has round earcups, so if you're sensitive to your ears touching the pads, might consider other option with oval shape.
Not really worth the upgrade. I didn’t notice any better audio and the gen4 a50’s just don’t get loud enough for competitive gaming. Headset also disconnects the mic sometimes so you have to power down the headset and turn back on to get the mic to work.
Top1c _ I hear a lot of people complain about the sound volume on the 4th gen! What if i don't even go up half the volume on my a50's 3rd gen!? Would u recommend the 4th gen?
There's a update beta link on Reddit to apply to them. Supposedly it fixes allot of the issues. But I agree my Gen 3 was way louder. I would have kept them if they wouldn't disconnect so much.

i had the gen 4 then returned them and kept my gen 3 they sound the same but the gen 3 is louder

I feel like the biggest improvements they've done were on the A40 models the gen 4 blow gen 3 away in sound quality

Nice Video but you should mention the buggy Firmware of the Gen 4.Sidetone reset,Base station beeing not recognized by the console..etc...
You can adjust the default side tone level in the software.

I have the Gen 4 and Arctic Pro Wireless for PS4 and I use they Astros more do to them being way more comfortable for my big head.

Why the latencies mentioned in this video (gen4: 17ms and gen3: 39ms) are different from the non-BT latency measurement in rtings.com (gen4: 80ms and gen3: 99ms)? Are these some different measurements or is the data wrong in this video?

I have the a50s gen 2 and it still has the better mic compared to all the a50s after that gen 2.
Correction:In the Thumbnail they say that the Gen 3 is from 2018 but it‘s from 2016
Did support for Dolby atmos or windows sonic get mentioned? Pretty big deal in my opinion.

I got the A50 about a year ago and compared to other headsets, I just cant hear footstep positions clearly with the A50, which for me, is the single most important thing for a gaming headset.. Fiddling with EQ settings didn't help either. Also, the extra option, for the "amazing" Dolby sound, makes it sound absolutely terrible, I've literally never used it, it's rubbish in comparison to Dolby off, lol.
Was hoping they had fixed the balance between bass and treble much better, but it seems this isn't the case at all. So if I didn't like the gen 3 I don't see myself liking the gen 4,damn.
I need more volume on my headset but doesn’t seem like they go to high. I feel like I’m playing in a medium volume setting
Gen 3 docking station can be finicky. If you dont make sure headset seated properly it will not charge. Cant tell you how many times I gamed way to late into the night and woke up to a almost dead headset. Non issue on gen 4. Also to note is the gen 4 earcups most definately are ever so slightly smaller in internal diameter, meaning they touch my ears. That in combination of being black versus gray it feels like putting earwarmers on. This really bothered me in the beginning but Ive gotten used to it. The biggest turn off has been months of the base station freezing up on the xbox variant with no solution until recently and no mention of that problem in any reviews I have watched inluding this one. It gets old unplugging the usb every powercycle. I did just see the firmware finally has a update as of yesterday for me. Sounds like it will solve the freezing and low volume issues. Happy about thay but shouldn't have had to wait months for a solution.
looks like the gen 4 has a better base. With the gen 3 its always an issue for me to get the headset to connect to the base.
I'm still using my gen1 Astro's and i'm only here looking for an upgrade because my friend sat on my gen1 lying on the couch :P

i can hear the difference between the sample song and when you swap to the headsets with my klipsch pro media 2.1, the headphones lose a bit of mid bass and sound minuscule hollow. where as the sample track is a bit fuller sounding. I have the Gen 1 a50's just trying to figure out if its worth it.
Just goes to show the Gen 3’s were nearly perfect as is. They couldn’t really improve on them a whole lot. No surprise there - they’re the best headset I’ve ever owned.
One of the major diff in Gen 3 and Gen 4...Gen 4 DOES have longer battery life.

Hi Rtings I would like to suggest you all test out VRR on the LG Oleds as they now show up in the nvidia G-sync compatible certified list and it says the TV supports 40-120 Hz of range.
I own the ps4 a50 gen3 and and use them on Xbox also just brought an Xbox base off ebay. When I want to use them I put them on the base that’s connected to the device I want to play $40
One thing I'm annoyed at about the gen 3 with the leather ear cups is that those cups are just so slightly larger so when you dock the headset it doesn't easily charge because the two cups touch. You really have to fiddle with it or remove one of them. It just seems dumb considering it's such a premium product. Also, the range on these is absolute trash.

I've been testing many different headsets this year and since I'm a huge bass junkie (explosions, gunshots, etc really need to sound powerful for me), tried the Plantronics, Astro A50 G3, and Turtle Beach Elite 800x and I actually ended up with the last one. For me best balance between highs and lows. A50 was great with the bass but it would drown out the highs, when I had a EQ mode where the highs were great the bass would be weak. I wonder how that is on this new one.

I have the Ps4 Gen 3 version and they tend to just have a bunch of audio distortion and eventually just don’t work. I’ve rebooted it, updated it and have everything lined up for it to work and it still happens.
Is this headset have the same 5ghz frequency problem than the Gen3??

Would the dolby atmos option for xbox do anything to increase the performance of the gen4 vs gen3 ? I would have thought the gen4 was more of a sound quality upgrade for footsteps and surround detail
MY own experience with this is I need to 100% DISABLE any and ALL other things like Mixamp for instance. Then take ANY standard pair of headphones and run it using ONLY the Dolby 7.1 App. NOW you will hear sound as close to natural in a 7.1 environment. Of course the better the headphones, the better the sound & experience.

@@Evjen97 So I bought the Virtuoso white version for $140 last week. I liked it so much that I returned it and got the SE all-metal version.
Be warned though, it has round earcups, so if you're sensitive to your ears touching the pads, might consider other option with oval shape.
Do a video of this but with the a40tr! Maybe even the mod kit too (for the a40tr)

Can you guys check out PDP AG9+ wireless headset. Recent new mic boom has made this a very good consideration for $80 or less.
I had Gen 2 for 4-5 years I would never upgrade until it wear and tears.. I have Gen 4 now and prolly won’t upgrade until it breaks

Not really worth the upgrade. I didn’t notice any better audio and the gen4 a50’s just don’t get loud enough for competitive gaming. Headset also disconnects the mic sometimes so you have to power down the headset and turn back on to get the mic to work.
Top1c _ I hear a lot of people complain about the sound volume on the 4th gen! What if i don't even go up half the volume on my a50's 3rd gen!? Would u recommend the 4th gen?
Daniel Torres the new bass station is way cleaner and smaller. I like that aspect but to me not worth the upgrade.

There's a update beta link on Reddit to apply to them. Supposedly it fixes allot of the issues. But I agree my Gen 3 was way louder. I would have kept them if they wouldn't disconnect so much.
