We were made aware that there is a potential firmware update for the TCL QM8 that aims to improve its PQ EOTF tracking, but we haven't seen it yet. We will add a new pinned comment with an update if there is a significant change after the new update!
What picture mode are these in? The hisense appears to have much better color and depth to me but not sure if its just because of the picture mode you used.
Let’s say the pq eotf gets on track is that one firmware update going to put the tcl ahead or would the Hisense still be the better tv ? Im assuming the brightness will go down to be more accurate but I don’t know if this will increase the native contrast or how that’s possible
The fact that you constantly keep swapping which TV is on the left vs right is MADDENING. Early on I very clearly preferred the picture of the TV on the right - which I thought was the Hisense - but then all of your comparison charts show the TCL on the right. I had to go back and look at the stands from section to section to make sure I knew which TV was which. Just keep the same TV on the same side throughout the comparison!!
Are there any issues thus far? Debating between the TCL or Hisense never owned either brand. Have only had LG OLED's, and the burn in was bad, I'm done with OLED's.
@@JZapata1987 I just bought the Qm851 tonight. I am debating canceling and checking out the U8N because it's $100 cheaper. That said, I think either tv is amazing. What are your thoughts so faR?
Great comparison Abby! Thanks for posting it! I already bought the 75 inch U7N (with less brightness and contrast) and it's fantastic! Still had to lower brightness for my taste for a average bright room. Guess I'm not a nit nut like so many...
I have a the Hisense U8N and an LG OLED B7 with 10,000 hours on it that's perfect, no burn in. The problem is I have a very bright room with lots of floor to ceiling windows and the OLED was constantly getting washed out. It’s just too dark. The Hisense TV is much better than the OLED in this room and my OLED is much better now in my darker game room upstairs. Both these TV's are 65 inches and honestly the only thing I don't like about the Hisense is the viewing angle and Dolby Vision Gaming, which is turned off on my Xbox Series X. Other than that it's a superior TV for watching sports and it's now football season!
I was debating between these two in July. I ended up with the 65" TCL cause it was on sale at Best Buy for $1399. Two weeks later, they had it for $999. Fortunately, I was in the price match window. So I feel like I got that TV for a steal.
I have the 55 inch version of the U8H & for PC gaming the tv has been a nightmare so I went & got the 42 inch C3 & my U8H is collecting dust & I've had a few minor quality issues as well 🤦🏿🤷🏿
@t.k.morris The U8H for console gaming & movie watching it's AMAZING but for PC gaming it's terrible!!! I heard it doesn't do true gaming at 4K 120hz but it actually upscales to that resolution 🤦🏿🤷🏿 My Brother just got a 85 inch U7N & so far he has no complaints & saids it's amazing 👍🏿
6:03 I'm surprised they didn't compare the "real scene" brightness for this video, the TCL QM8 gets twice as bright in small highlights. The TCL QM8 gives the best contrast of any LCD in scenes with small bright points of light, which is especially relevant for gaming.
I'm not sure if it's just my screen or TH-cam, but the U8N color looks richer and better. I doubt that I'd be able to tell if they weren't next to each other.

Hisense might just have more color in the out of the box mode. But the QM8 is known to display colors better than the U8N. Especially Blue and Orange where Hisense struggles.
I jut got the 98" TCL QM851G, have had it for around a week, and MAN it's utterly spectacular! I got it on sale at Bet Buy for $3,999, which is a major bargain compared to the competition. Compared to my old 79" LG, it's not in the same Universe, the TCL is so bright, the blacks are SO black, the colors are spectacular. I just think we've reached a point where we are splitting microscopic hairs to even see differences between all the top tier TV's. As many have said, It's hard to go wrong these days. I have it connected up via optical output to a pair of Devialet 108db Phantom I speakers, and the combination is beyond amazing!

@@shanew7361 I still love it. A couple of months in, and it's damn impressive. One thing it does, is show up any substandard source material; Netflix, Amazon Prime, SHO are astounding, but stuff like Peacock can be variable.
I'll have to say that the constant position changing (TCL on left, now TCL on right, now TCL on left again, now TCL back to the right, now TCL back to the left, etc.) of the TV's in this head to head was very frustrating.
My U8N 65 is beautiful. A couple glitches in menu speed occasionally. But the picture is stellar. The peak brightness is crazy and shocking at first. I dialed it back a bit
In all the side by side shots of the two TVs the detail and color depth is better on the Hisense U8N. Do these side by side images truly reflect the picture quality of the TVs? Or are the settings different (ie. Hisense in Filmaker while TCL is in Eco mode? Or is it that your camera can't accurately show the two TV images together. Just by looking at your video the Hisense appears to have a much better picture.
Hisense and TCLs refusal to unify their global lineups and ranges and naming schemes ist just horribly anti consumer....Europeans have been getting shafted for years by them, with similarish model names despite being absolutely worse in every way than their NA counterparts....less dimming zones, worse panels..... Really bad :/
I noticed that now, that I'm thinking to buy a "qm8". Tvs have several diferent names within europe, it's almost impossible to distinguish wich is wich. Most of the times, I can't even tell what model year they are. 😢
In europe TCL QM8 / QM851G isnst even avaliable at all, even on their global webpage QM8 isnt even listed. Instead they pushing C855 which is totally different model and in size 65 comes with 1344 dimming zones compared to 65QM851G. 2880 local dimming zones. Im looking to get QM851G, model but still without any luck if you are living in europe.
Somebody goofed by putting the Hisense on the right when the displays are shown, but on the left when the scorecards are shown... Also @6:04, why does the Hisense appear to have the higher value for peak 10% window (3691 vs 3467), but lower review score for the category overall?
I have a 65 inch tcl 6series 2022 and I love It......I plan to upgrade to an 85 inch this upcoming black friday and It'll be between these 2 tv's....I'm torn but the final deciding factor will be price...but I'm leaning towards the TCL
The Hisense seems to at least show that the flowers are purple. They are almost completely blown out and white on the TCL (at least when viewing on TH-cam).

In my opinion, these are completely different categories of TVs. The TCLs prices in the USA is determined only by the policy of the company, which sells its TVs much cheaper in the USA than in Europe. TCL x955 has lower models such as the c955 and c 855, the last one is sold at the same price as the Hisense U8N model. Also the Hisense in Europe doesn't have Google tv but Vidaa.
Hey Abby and dear Rtings team. We're slowly approaching Black Friday and I'm thinking about upgrading my Sony XH95. The TCL QM851G can now also be found in Germany/Europe under the name “TCL Q10BX1” or “TCl Q10BX”. Does it even make sense to upgrade my XH95? I'm a gamer and I play a lot. Power consumption is also important to me, as the Sony (65") uses quite a lot. I'm more in favor of the Hisense, because the TCL currently costs a lot more. Kind regards from Germany ✌️😉

I really don't understand these getting 9+ on reflections, they are like mirrors in the test and can even see the equipment in the demo shots, I don't understand how people can ignore it when viewing, and the idea of bumping the brightness to counter it does not seem like a sensible idea for your eyes. I have the TCL and when I put on a Lighting zone transition test, the white circles brightness will flash brighter even though it's supposed to stay a specific brightness the whole time. I have gone through all the troubleshooting steps possible, the only thing that fixes it is disabling local dimming. TCL Support says this is normal behavior, but none of the reviews anywhere online mention it randomly flashbanging you when local dimming is active. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

No, they're smaller TVs therefore they don't need as many dimming zones to achieve the same black level and bloom performance. In fact the 55 inch Hisense has more dimming zones per square inch than the 65 inch model, even though the 65 inch has more overall dimming zones.
@@PumpUptheJam81 I have two surround sound systems (living room and family room) connected to our main TVs. Nevertheless, I still like to buy TVs that actually provide decent sound since other family members don't like to solely rely on turning on our surround sound systems every time they watch TV - and they deserve decent sound, too (even if just relying on the TV's sound). I had the U8H and it had impressive sound for a TV. Recently bought the new U8N and it has even better sound (and better picture) than the U8H. It's quite impressive - especially since you don't need to turn on the surround system to enjoy watching it. This is why sound from a TV is also important to me - and, I imagine, other people as well, even if not for you.
Had to buy Hisense because 55 inch is the correct size for the small room I was buying it for, and for some reason TCL hates making a higher end TV anything smaller than 65.
Not much to pick about , im watching from LG OLED , they are the same . Hisense is a bit more bright , TCL has a bit better upscaling , but Hisense brightness is overkill and TCL updcaling wont work on PC and stuff , only built in apps ....so if you are like me on PC , they are the same . If you on the other hand watch cable , then TCL has a bit better upscaling . I would for a TV , chose used OLED then new Hisense or TCL .... Once you go OLED , even with their drawbacks , you dont go back .
Absolutely maddening that Hisense made the 75" ADS pro instead of VA. Now people that want the 75" have no choice but to go with the QM8. I seen the 65" U8N in person and its better than the QM8, a big reason is the reflective quality, but the QM8 is better than the ADS 75" hisense.
Theres a guy who runs a TV repair depot and he talked about the brands that most come into his shop. 1st was Hisense and 2nd was Samsung ( excluding 5+ yrs and older models). Its near impossible to find any warranty info on any of these brands . I think its kept very hush hush imo.
TCL is doing the same than Samsung does in south America for the QN90a from 55inches used ads panels instead of VA one and the price doesn't justify get a QN90A instead get a QN85A having same panel but less zones of dimming
They have the same problem, available in north America. Elsewhere its try and error, performance for the same model can also be different depending on region especially for hisense

How come when you do the HDR brightness comparison at 6:22 the scene with the purple flowers look the same, but when you have both TVs behind Abby showing the same image the Hisense looks to have the brightness turned down and the colors turned up? That makes me feel like there is a little bias going on for the U8N having had it's picture adjusted but not the QM8. While all the test results shown may be accurate, by having that stark difference between the images behind Abby, you're subconsciously pushing the idea that the U8N is a vastly superior picture.

Such low contrast for that amount of dimming zones and terrible EOTF tracking that lifts shadows and washes out the picture are terrible hits to the QM851. TCL managed to improve the QM850's EOTF from last year yet still shipped this year's QM851 with that atrocious EOTF tracking. They finalized the EOTF fix almost an entire year after the QM850 released and it's been months since they promised to fix the QM851's. Hey TCL, do you want money or not
Didn’t you make a comment on the Hisense when reviewing it that it had not only quality control issues but it was buggy? Why no mention of that? Makes a difference to me.
Becusee me n my other buddy who have 3 Hisense together U8 U7 do not have quality control or buggy issue . 😮the quality issue with $199 Roku has nothing to do with high end U8 U9 UX . I can’t speak for this year specifically, but my U8K was HORRIBLE in this regard. The TCL might be better off because it seems to try and actually trade blows with Sony’s lineup, but my U8 definitely had abhorrent ghosting in darker scenes. I mainly noticed it in games like The Last of Us, where it’s very common to be in dimly lit areas. Not too surprising, as these models are typically all panel no processing, and usually skip out on finer details in exchange for great overall value. Not saying they aren’t great TV’s but I’d definitely take a Bravia 7 and it’s much less impressive brightness and local dimming in exchange for the better build quality and reliability.
@@Yoga_Tv_buying Okay. So feel free to elaborate on where exactly you “disagree”. Like I said, these obviously aren’t just flawless alternatives to better manufacturers such as Sony or Samsung, the price difference comes from somewhere in production. In this case, these TV’s have terrible capabilities when it comes to effectively managing motion, which causes the issues with ghosting. Aside from that, the dude asks about ghosting, and you start going off about the glossy coating and viewing angles. Are you sure you’re aware of what he’s actually asking?

Why nobody doesn't mention about using TCL QM8 as a monitor, especially for Mac with 5K resolution? How does it work with a text?
Can we assume that the mentioned TCal firmware update did not create a significant change?
The fact that you constantly keep swapping which TV is on the left vs right is MADDENING. Early on I very clearly preferred the picture of the TV on the right - which I thought was the Hisense - but then all of your comparison charts show the TCL on the right. I had to go back and look at the stands from section to section to make sure I knew which TV was which. Just keep the same TV on the same side throughout the comparison!!
I have a feeling she did that purposely. It kept me on my toes lol
Like you guys said, can't go wrong with either. Got my U8N back in May before the TCL was out.
Are there any issues thus far? Debating between the TCL or Hisense never owned either brand. Have only had LG OLED's, and the burn in was bad, I'm done with OLED's.

I saw some people mentioning ghost screening on the U8N but not sure if it is totally true
Great comparison Abby! Thanks for posting it! I already bought the 75 inch U7N (with less brightness and contrast) and it's fantastic! Still had to lower brightness for my taste for a average bright room. Guess I'm not a nit nut like so many...
Thank you! At the end of the day, it's only you that needs to be happy with the purchase 😄

@brianl6151 it's working great in my living room. No real complaints so far
@brianl6151 it's awesome. Blacks are dark enough and it's the brightest tv I've had. Game of Thrones in Dolby Vision is a wonder
my preference is for the hisense again. I've been impressed with the value they offer ever since U8H
I have the 55 inch version of the U8H & for PC gaming the tv has been a nightmare so I went & got the 42 inch C3 & my U8H is collecting dust & I've had a few minor quality issues as well 🤦🏿🤷🏿
@@myquietreviews Which one had the minor issues, C3 or U8H?
@t.k.morris The U8H for console gaming & movie watching it's AMAZING but for PC gaming it's terrible!!! I heard it doesn't do true gaming at 4K 120hz but it actually upscales to that resolution 🤦🏿🤷🏿 My Brother just got a 85 inch U7N & so far he has no complaints & saids it's amazing 👍🏿
6:03 I'm surprised they didn't compare the "real scene" brightness for this video, the TCL QM8 gets twice as bright in small highlights.
The TCL QM8 gives the best contrast of any LCD in scenes with small bright points of light, which is especially relevant for gaming.
hhhmmmm...
I am very happy with my U8N.
I'm not sure if it's just my screen or TH-cam, but the U8N color looks richer and better. I doubt that I'd be able to tell if they weren't next to each other.
if you are on a va panel careful to be exactly in the middle to compare. juste a bit off axis and youlose a lot of color (and contrast)

Drops in picture quality in game mode?

The colours on the Hisense appear better, as well as details in the brights.
Somebody goofed by putting the Hisense on the right when the displays are shown, but on the left when the scorecards are shown...

At the moment it seems the like 95D is the only option for me on the market and it is _expensive_ in a domain where tech changes fast.
Dude u have NOT seen Hisense Flagship LEDs . They r next level premium .

In Australia we do not have a TCL QM8 or X955 we have a C855. How am I supposed to know what I am getting and not a worse model, Why do this name confusion. And if these are the same models why do they perform differently depending on region. What the hell is going on.

D Current-- Contrast 😮testing method is -- developed 70 years ago by RCA - when they release CT-100 tv in 1951 or something .
In Science 🧬 school 🏫 - those Bio Science professors tell u -- tv watching . Contrast is Seen by 1 Color against another Color . Not black to white . Day time all u see are by Color to Color . Black does -- NOT exist . Any black is -- GREY seen by brain 🧠n being processed compare to surrounding n Decided/Perveived as Black. As long as Surpunding is Bright the Dark grey is seen as black. But most visuals yr face , arms legs . 🦵 contrast is delivered by Color - Volume /Density under the Over All CASTED sun ☀️
That’s over Millions of years of evolution ! I can go on for 2 hours but the -- CONTRAST method using ONLY black/ white is Dated. Black n white then Color Density casted on brightness 🔅 to create the texture create -- contrast combine !
U won’t get this anywhere else . Most hardware tech ppl won’t notice the biology side ! TV 📺 on projects images like light source ! eyes just like Security Camera- capture /deliver Data !
Brain 🧠 does the processing .
What we see is NOT up to what those - film Maker mode or Those “professional calibration “ tells us . :):)
Do the 55 inch models suffer a lot due to having less dimming zones?
I don’t think it will be worse than other size . If that is d case ask SONY fans : 😊WHY is your 2023 SONY best Seller X90L 55” only have 52 (I am not lying ! ) dimming zones ?
Sony X90L 65”- 88 zones
Sony X93L 65” -384 zones
Sony Bravia 7 65”- 480 zones .
☝🏼those r 65”
55” U8N with Color Density match /Surpass Samsung flagship QD-oled. s95D , with incky black screen , -- FULL gloss . Will be absolutely 💯 breath taking . 😊
Smaller tv ppl sit closer -- so it doesn’t need to be THAT bright ,
So doesn’t need to be that many zones to manage the brightness ! But focus on fine toning image
No, they're smaller TVs therefore they don't need as many dimming zones to achieve the same black level and bloom performance. In fact the 55 inch Hisense has more dimming zones per square inch than the 65 inch model, even though the 65 inch has more overall dimming zones.
Great video! Since these TVs hit such high peak brightness levels, is it OK to turn off the dynamic tone mapping?
did i miss them talking about color accuracy?
Why would you show the TV side by side, but flip them when you view the stats. This makes it confusing. Should have correct that in editing

Great review on two great TVs. But, nothing on sound comparison? Was waiting to hear something on that.
I would hope fellow humans would invest in a decent surround system or sound bar to match the picture, and not rely on wimpy TV speakers.
What is the QM8 model equivalent to in Australia? They dont sell that model here...😢
With Hisense using the lower contrast IPS ADS pro panel on the 75" I'm jumping ship and going to TCL.
Native contrast is more important.
Had to buy Hisense because 55 inch is the correct size for the small room I was buying it for, and for some reason TCL hates making a higher end TV anything smaller than 65.
How do you like the 55inch U8N ?
Hisense Model:98UX vs TCL 98QM851G??
How do you reduce the color banding in low light dark scenes in the U8N?
Great review Abby. Based on your review I'd go for the TCL.😊

TCL is doing the same than Samsung does in south America for the QN90a from 55inches used ads panels instead of VA one and the price doesn't justify get a QN90A instead get a QN85A having same panel but less zones of dimming

Also wondering if the Hisense has the “Purple Ghosting” that was extremely noticeable. Kinda seems to be common with these panels though hahaha
