- Chapter 1 of THE RISE OF KYLO REN debuted on December 18th. This first edition painted a very tragic picture of Ben Solo and the events right after his uncle Luke Skywalker tried to strike him down. Ben Solo never murdered the students at the Jedi Temple. It was something nefarious. We also get to really meet the Knights Of Ren in this comic as well. They are a Star Wars motorcycle gang that uses the dark side of the force. And finally, we meet Snoke, who is creepier than he has ever been. We also meet three new Jedi, Hennex, Tai, and Voe who hunt Ben Solo for murdering their master.

Yes, this. Even in Kylo and Rey's battle against the guards at the end of the Last Jedi, it was Ben being calm and Rey screaming like a lunatic.

Wow it’s amazing how Palpy constructed all of this. Putting the dark visions into Luke’s head. Presumably causing the Force storm to frame Ben for destroying the temple. Being the dark voice in Ben’s head. Snoke. And he’s probably behind the Knights of Ren as well especially considering they became his guards after Ben defected in TROS. ST Palpy might be more kiniving than he was in the Prequels. Also Palpy let’s Kylo come to him unguarded at the beginning to TROS knowing he wouldn’t kill him because Kylo basically has Stockholm Syndrome at this point.

Palpatine orchestrated the attack on Naboo to get rid of the chancellor, then became chancellor, manipulated the senate, the jedi and Anakin, was responsible for the creation of the clone army and implanting inhibitors chips on their brains, and played both sides of the same war and then annihilated the Jedi Order (and they could do nothing about it). Oh, and let's not forget that he was capable of hiding his presence and real identity even from Yoda.
That's waaaaaaaay more conniving than what happened in the ST. I mean, he basically manipulated the entire galaxy in order to create his empire.

I was so extremely disturbed by Snoke but I really want to see more to see how he behaved before he began to abuse Ben. It's obvious Ben thinks he has no friends other than him.
Something I really want to see in this comic series is Kylo Ren attempting to bleed his Kyber Crystal.
Ah man, something about that image of Snoke, welcoming Ben with open-arms , inside that creepy space bio-dome sent a chill through my body

So for anyone who's worried that Reylo has ended for good, I found a Tumblr post by millennium-eagle that goes into considerable detail on why Ben is not really dead, he's just hanging in some kind of Limbo/Purgatory. He's stuck between life and death in the WBW (World Between Worlds) and Rey needs to go and get him back, since the Dyad is not complete.

Mollie Thomas I may sound very dramatic but now that the writers have broken or decided not to fulfill the Campbellian myth, but rather the American monomyth, I cannot trust them to do right by Ben Solo. They created a character that had been manipulated even more craftily and with more cruelty than Anakin (arguably) and we weren’t allowed to experience his full journey to redemption or to see him live with happiness free from his chains. I can’t allow myself to hope that there is more to his story as far as the writers are concerned.
@@4leafclover395 I understand. I'm also a little reluctant to put my faith in LucasFilm after TROS, and J. J. is pretty much dead to me, but Star Wars' big advantage is that it's multimedia. Ben can be resurrected in another medium. Also, from a marketing perspective it makes sense, in a sadistic sort of way, to have Ben die doing a good thing, then make him even more sympathetic than he already was, and about a year or two later, have Rey go on an epic journey to get her soulmate back. But yeah, still feeling burned by TROS, so we'll see.

Mollie Thomas, I am hoping so! After reading the TROS Visual Dictionary and listening to interviews with Daisy, it seems very likely that some how, some way, Rey with her new saber, will be going to the WBW to get her man! I agree Ben needs to know what it's like to live free of the Dark Side gnawing at him, and the Skywalkers need someone to have a happy ending; there was just too much tragedy for the three generations. The characters and the fans need Ben to triumph AND live a happy life even if it means crusading around the galaxy with Rey to bring more light.
What really bothers me about this is that none of this is clear in the movies. People really HATE Kylo Ren and Reylo. Twitter is a dumpster fire rn bc of how much people hate Reylo, but there’s so much they don’t know. The novelizations provide so much more context and nuance, and now these comics will too. The fact that he didn’t kill his fellow Jedi classmates is huge, it clears him of a lot and proves even further how sick Palpatine was. I love that we have so much more to read and preoccupy ourselves with now that the sequel trilogy is over, but casual fans won’t ever know who Ben Solo actually was. They see him as a whiny bitch boy lmao and I don’t entirely blame them. I did too, until I learned more about him, and now he’s my favourite character in all of Star Wars. I just feel like the sequel trilogy didn’t do Ben Solo justice, and with an actor like Adam Driver, it’s so much wasted potential.
Yes, it's really sad. I kinda lost my joy in being part of the fandom because all this shit happening (his death, Rey's reaction to it, that horrible ending, Boyega's comments and people talking that the kiss wasn't even planned, I mean WTF?). Anakin had a trilogy to talk about his past, Ben gots some HQ's. That's great. (I'm talking this but maybe it was Adam who doesn't want anymore to be in star wars films, I heard that people stalked him and his wife doing awful things)

I think Charles Soule will reveal this in the next few issues. I imagine Snoke will bring Ren and Ben together, they will fight where Ben is then broken and turned by hate and rage because of his opponent and after slaying Ren with that, he then becomes Kylo Ren and the master.
The dictionary also says that the knights could be compared to the Inquisitors in a way. And after TROS I'm wondering if JJ was even aware of this and if he was he probably ignored it determined to do his own thing.
I know there were more scenes with the KOR and HUX etc but im not sure if JJ was aligned with Pablo on the info for his characters. He definitely seems to do his own thing.

I really appreciate that they are filling in the gaps that lead Ben to the dark side but it really does break my heart that this character didn't have a chance. He obviously has both the, as you put it, arrogance of Han but also the compassion of both his parents. It just sucks he had to die given all these details. Although part of me wonders if Adam Driver didn't intentionally request his character's death similarly to how Harrison Ford wanted Han to die originally.

Good evening everyone here is an update on today of my third viewing.... I got to say I think I enjoy this film a little more and see it for what it really is granted I still wish some parts of the film took their time instead of being so quick to jump from one scene after the next. I guess I wanted it to be more like Return of the King given it's almost three hour gap and I think over time once the blu ray release comes out I'll like it a little more but there's still some things that I still wish could have been dealt with better and I think a lot of it had to with making the deadline for the December 2019 release because they wanted to keep up with the tradition of having a Star Wars release every two years in the month of December. But that's just me. But I left all my beef behind and just enjoyed myself and took advantage of it because this is the last time in probably the next two years that I'll be watching a Star Wars movie in theaters but at least now in a few months I'll get to own it forever. And yeah the ending is still a bummer it's bittersweet and doesn't feel like it should be the true ending, it's still unsettling for a lot of people. But lately for me now that some time has past I learned not to let the ending of the film bother me or make me as sad as I was a few days before going to my first showing. I stopped worrying how each viewing would make me feel , or anytime I pondered about it randomly and just let myself reconnect and embrace my love for Reylo and Ben Solo and in my own way keep him with me. In fact I bought a wolf calendar today and the front cover had a wolf standing on top of a rock looking mighty and majestic and it looks the wind is blowing in his direction and he looked a lot like Ben Solo on the cover of Vanity Fair. I always compare Ben Solo to wolves and every day when I look at my new calendar and change the month I'm looking at Ben Solo. Yeah I know kind of weird but it's a nice feeling.

Love your review. Enjoying your story telling style. So Luke failed Ben, put his head in the ground, and consistently failed Ben his whole life. At the end of Last Jedi Kylo asks if Luke has come to forgive him when it should have been the other way around. Luke misses the point and opportunity completely- and nothing is accomplished except that Luke dies in order to buy a few minutes time for the resistance to flee.
I think it’s interesting that, seemingly Palpatine destroyed the temple, but he didn’t do it until he could find a way to blame it on someone else and keep his identity a secret.
He must have really feared Luke discovering he was still around.
This comic is just great and would have been awesome flash back for about 20 min instead of canto bites in episode 8. I like parts of 8 canto bites was a waste bc holdor would have told him the plan. That was dumb but take that out add this to 8 and make Luke not grumpy at least after he touched the saber and 8 be just epic. And the first part would have Ben cool flash back for knights of ren in episode 7 instead of the scene where Han finds the falcon. He should have been at resistance base and Rey fin find there way there with bb 8 has a tracker or something.
I hate how Palpatine killed all of the jedi. They should have had Palpatine start screaming at him with Luke's, vaders, snokes, and Palpatines voice. Telling him to finsh what he started, do what Vader once did. Dew it come on. Ben it's what I want! Then Ben starts screaming and running into the temple.

i saw a comment once that compared the tragedy of ben to the story of thomasin in "the witch". don't know if you've seen the movie, but these comics are really supporting that idea complete with snoke playing the role of black phillip, creepy undertones and all.

The first time I read this comic everything started to make sense. Ben's story becoming Kylo Ren is huge should have been a prequel to the last trilogy. Why did I have to read all of the novelisations, these comic books and so much more to find out why Ben/Kilo Ren turned away from his family? Tai was right about Ben but of course he couldn't live Ben couldn't have anyone believe in him
I love this comic, it gaves us a look into ren's mind, and kinda confirmed something I thought about, ren's identity, I always thought ren had a problem to find who he is. Luke, leia and han wanted him to be the jedi master like obi wan, snoke wanted him to be a dark side wielder like his grandfather, both sides of the force tore him apart til he had hard time to find out who he is
Looking back at Rise of Skywalker and the Rise of Kylo Ren things makes sense. Kylo Ren was a manipulated victim.

Thanks for the explanation man. I never caught that the surviving brother was killed cause he wasn't force-sensetive. I didn't realize that the "shadow" was a reference to the force/dark side. I thought Ren was just being erratic.

What I think happened that Ben Solo did cause the lightning storm that destroyed the temple, but he didn't want to do it and only realised what he did in the last second when it was too late (or at least that's what I think he meant when he said he didn't want this). I think it makes sense since we saw him causing explosions with the Force in his rage (remember the dark side cave on Dagobah?) and why would he say he didn't want this if he didn't do it? But anyways that's my own headcanon

I think Ben may have summoned that force storm that destroyed the temple, he was screaming at the temple and all of a sudden red clouds form and lightning storm hits it...I honestly don’t think Palpatine did that, I think this was the first time Ben truly let the dark side in and all that anger came out of him causing the force storm...him saying “what” only shows us he didn’t mean to do it, but it makes more sense than Palpatine doing that from across the galaxy, in his extremely weakened state...

I might have been the only one who wanted them to keep this kinda of father son mentality, so in the second movie when Kylo kneels and all that snoke instead of insulting and berating kylo he talks to him more like a disappointed father. Something more like "No i am not angry at you Ren, i am disappointed. When we first meet i thought i had found what all masters wanted. A apprentice, a teacher, a worthy successor. But perhaps i was mistaken." even if it was just snoke manipulating kylo i feel it would make it abit more intriguing and it would make kylo perhaps a bit more tragic.
Also the night buzzard is the best ship in the new cannon. A diesel truck made to roll the coal in space.

I actually think it was Ben that conjured up the storm to destroy the temple. He was fillies with rage and confusion, and couldn’t control his anger. He didn’t want to destroy the temple, but he did cause it

Maybe from Ben's perspective, but it isn't true (or entirely helpful) to phrase it like this. Luke never 'tried' or made an attempt on Ben's life. He thought, fleetingly, it was the just thing to do for the greater good of the galaxy. Then, immediately, realized he was wrong.
Ben awoke to an ignited lightsaber and assumed the worst, as anyone might.
It was an intrusion for Luke to look inside Ben's head while asleep. And an emotional failure to react by igniting his lightsaber. But Luke is not a cold murderer or an executioner, and he would have never done it.
But let's acknowledge Luke's POV and struggle. How hard would it be to see these atrocities committed by your nephew and pupil? We have to imagine Ben's going to get into some pretty ruthless work when he joins the Knights (especially based on their portrayal here), he goes on to murder family friends (Lor San Tekka), and order the massacre of civilians with the First Order.
It's a tragic sequence of events with a lot of emotional weight and nuance: the consequences these characters face from their decisions in high-stake situations.
I'm glad these themes are being explored in Star Wars.

Even if they're trying to imply that the lightning storm was caused by Ben in a moment of fear/rage, it's clear that Ben did not intend for that outcome to happen. At most it would be an un-premeditated, accidental surge of power the same as Rey with the transport in TRoS.
I loved the entire sequel trilogy.

If that turns out to be what they say happens, it should have been in the movies in some way... This is what holds star wars back, just making shit up without explanation just so you can explain it in New random comics to make some more sense (or less) of this convoluted mess... :/
