Kylo Ren VS Rey on the DEATH STAR | Lightsaber Duel Analysis

  • Welcome to another lightsaber duel analysis. Today I want to discuss Kylo Ren vs Rey on the wreckage of The Death Star from The Rise Of Skywalker.
    The duel itself is VERY fun to watch. I also found it interesting how this duel basically ends up in a stalemate which is why I think the importance of this duel isn't who wins, but what it does to help both characters grow and face their final challenge in the trilogy. Enjoy!

    Hello all! Enjoy todays video breaking down my thoughts on Kylo Ren vs Rey on the Death Star.
    This duel is absolutely a spectacle but its also a strange duel because of how it ends (this isn't a bad thing). The novelty in this duel was refreshing and some of the callbacks also made me an extremely happy Star Wars fan! While the movie itself is far from perfect, the duels were not part of my issues.

    Two other parallels in this duel:
    The way Kylo beats down Rey at the end of the duel is the same way Luke beat down Vader in ROTJ. Kylo acts a lot like ROTJ Luke in this duel by constantly being on the defensive with hopes that his enemy will come to his side until he gets pissed at the end.
    Kylo faces the same choice Anakin faces in his duel with Count Dooku in ROTS. I think a part of Kylo is pissed at how Rey beat him in the previous two films, and at the end of this duel he is given a chance for revenge like Anakin had with Dooku. I think it’s purposefully left ambiguous whether he was going to kill Rey before Leia intervened, but ultimately he did not and does the opposite of what Anakin did with Dooku.

    This is one of my favourite duels in the whole saga. I love the waves, they perfectly portrait the tumult of emotions that both Rey and Kylo are going through. And I also love its unconventional ending because it shows that a duel doesn't have to end with a choped off arm, but with someone being both mentally and physically healed. This is my favourite series from your channel because it is truly visible how much work you put into these videos and that makes them really high-quality.

    To me this fight is not a duel but more like an angry argument. The choreography as well as the facial expression reflects that emotions of the two characters so much that I can almost hear things like "are you done yet?" "WTF have you done" from their movements. Kudos to everyone who worked on this scene. BTW, I remember Adam Driver also said in an interview that this is his most memorable/favorite scene in the film and said things like it was the most physically demanding scene and satisfying.

  • @ryancook2696
    @ryancook2696 4 ปีที่แล้ว +160

    Speaking as someone who runs a fencing studio that also teaches stunt fighting, there's a good reason for big swings in choreography. It's safer for the actors, because they're able to see the strikes coming and react appropriately. It also reads better on-screen, for entertainment purposes. Big swings are easier for an audience to see than the subtle bladework and maneuvering of an actual sword fight. Granted, this fight does take telegraphed strikes to an extreme, but there's a good reason for it.

      Also, lightsabers in the sequels and OT are meant to resemble longswords, so the wide arcs makes sense. You can't make micro adjustments with a heavier blade, so you rely more on power to overwhelm the opponent.

      @Tobias_R 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Andrew Holmes yeah, longswords aren’t heavy like axes or anything, but they are still too heavy to make micro adjustments. You’d need exceptional wrist strength to yank the blade out of a swing like you could do with lighter swords.

General Hux being spy makes zero sense he is compromising is job because he wants kylo to lose so dumb. Finn is so side-lined at this point it hurts, I honestly thought he would start a storm trooper revolution with the women and her group that escaped the first order but nope it doesn't happen. I also thought Finn would be Jedi as well but unfortunately Disney sells there movies to china so a black guy can't have an important role. Ian MacDiarmid still nails Palpatine, poe, Finn and Reys trio is fun wish it happened earlier, Kylo rens redemption, Really like mark Hamill as Luke in this film unlike last Jedi, Babu frick is awesome, I felt this was Adam drivers best movie as kylo Ren, loved reys training montage. I find it a little interesting that the sequel trilogy is the first time we really SEE characters in a duel in which one or more of them actually gets shown on screen being tired out. Kylo Ren in TFA was clearly wounded, exhausted, and bleeding out, which affected his performance, and in TROS Rey is simply outclassed in almost every way, which shows in her hesitation in the latter quarter of the duel as well as her hand being in pain. I imagine that crossing blades with someone twice your size who has been using a lightsaber for years could be a little physically traumatizing haha

    in my opinion, kylo stops himself from killing rey not leia. leia reaches out to him which makes him become distracted all together but he stopped himself if you watch the scene. he sees the way rey flinches in fear and in helplessness and realizes he can't do that to her. if he really wanted to kill her, he would of as soon as rey fell to her knees or when he let her regain her composure when her hand was in pain. he had a crap ton of opportunities. i don't think kylo was capable of killing rey especially in that fashion, on the floor-- helpless, knowing that they are force dyads and she is the only person in the whole galaxy that truly understood him and held onto hope in him when even his own uncle and mother gave up on him before realizing they were wrong in doing so. they no doubt had feelings for each other and it's especially apparent in kylo more than rey

However the flaws in certain fights, and in this case an entire trilogy are more frequent and consistent than that of its predecessors. Anakin and obi wan flourishing next to each other was retarded however it can be excused for 2 reasons: 1) it was canonically explained in the lore as the 2 faking each other out to look for openings and 2) there were so many other good things about the fight that overshadow that example. For instance the constant guard positions, the realistic grapples, the practical spinning, flourishing and so much more.
      Not only is there no canonical explanation for rey and kylos fight being so poor, but its consistently poor. Its consistently slow, they are constantly overswinging, telegraphing, using reverse grips lol. Its terrible. Great analysis. I always thought that Ren tried to turn/stop Rey because he knew she’d be no match for Palpy alone . And if she ran to Exogal half cocked in a rage (don’t forget she’s mad at him for killing her parents and stealing her childhood ) she was good as dead. Yes he has his own self interest. But he also is in love with her. Reylo forever!

    I loved this duel, kylo would have actually won I’m so happy about that but sad he died.
    I didn’t think of kylo’s moves reminiscing Luke’s from the last Jedi but you’re right they do at least the dodging.
    For me he learned a lesson about patience after what following his rage costed him in the last Jedi.
    To me kylo is basically playing letting her do whatever she wants because he knows he can deflect it.
    Rey is acting like Kylo seeing Luke in the last Jedi just blind rage.
    I would call it a reverse duel, normally the one lashing out with rage is Kylo in this it’s Rey, it just proves how similar they are.
    A solid 7/10 from me.
    This analysis are so good, if I can ask what’s the next duel you want to analyze?

      @@darth5039 Yeah, I think Kylo won this duel as well. Kylo had Rey on the ground not once but twice after he thoroughly overpowered her and she was was yelling/screaming out in defeat and was so tired and beat that she couldn't even lift her lightsaber in defense anymore..and Kylo could have killed her. Her cheapshotting him after he could have killed her but chose not to, after he stopped fighting, after he was distracted by his dying Mother calling out to him through the force, after he lowered his lightsaber, after he turned away from Rey, after he turned off his lightsaber, and after he intentionally dropped his lightsaber doesn't change the fact that he had already won the duel. I think Kylo also won their first duel in The Rise Of Skywalker as he overpowered her a couple of times in that duel as well and he was calm and she was out of control and fighting with anger and he controlled that entire duel as well..plus, he found out where she was as well. Kylo was 2-0 vs. Rey in The Rise Of Skywalker.

    I don't think he ever wanted to hurt her in any of their duels. This was an argument between a couple that can't handle what they feel. I agree that he's just letting her hack at him to tire her out. With his overhead strike (when she was down, right before he drops the saber) I think he would have incapacitated her to stop the fight but he's never wanted to kill her. All of their interactions, including the segment where she blows up his TIE whisper by cutting off the wing (On Paasanna) are an attempt to get her attention and him attempting to persuade her to listen to him. I think this is a subtle call back to Leia and Han's fights...this is the only way he knows how to try to make a strong point with her and like Leia, she's not having it...hence the use of lightsabers to force the issue.

      Yeah indeed. To me he stopped because he almost broke his own promise to take her to execol with him. During the last moments of their duel his face shown absolute aggression when he had the upper hand but when he stopped he realised that his own aggression (anger hate pain that he was carrying out within him) was about to consume him. Like Luke on ep 6 he cut off his father's hand because his rage took over him and consumed him.

You can almost hear him think “Are you done yet?” Also, did Kylo really want Rey to join the dark side? He was done with the Jedi and the Sith in TLJ. He wanted Rey to join him and bring a new order to the galaxy. Overall, I liked all the action scenes of TROS. The movie was entertaining, it’s the plot and the ending that was disappointing.

  • @Ivbo
    @Ivbo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If you watch the fight in the throne room, when Rey goes to swing at Kylo and he dodges multiple times, she leaves herself wide open for counter attacks over and over again, counter attacks that would have cut her in half if Kylo wanted to kill her...in the third swing her entire back is open to Kylo, but he just ignores and jumps away...if Kylo Ren wanted to kill Rey the fight would never have left the throne room full stop...he is so much more experienced than her, and I believe it’s just like Vader vs Luke in ESB, Kylo is just testing her and not taking her seriously from the begin of the fight to the end of the fight.
    Kylo lets her set the pace of the fight, this is a guy who can move like prequel Jedi, he can fight at that pace if he wants to, I mean just look at how he takes out the Knights of Ren...and all of the KoR are dark side force users and are meant to be far more experienced and more proficient killers than Rey, he absolutely obliterates them in 10 seconds flat...against a Kylo Ren that she’s not connected to by a mystical Dyad, against a Kylo Ren that actually wants to kill her, Rey would never have left the Starkiller Base forest alive...nothing more needs to be said on this matter.

    I really do enjoy this movie a lot and I do think it ties everything from the originals and prequels quite beautifully. It's not a perfect movie by any means, I do have some problems upon rewatching it such as:
    1. We as the audience shouldn't have known Chewie survived nearly 10 minutes before the rest of the cast, it would have made the fake out death hit more if we really thought he was gone for little while longer I think.
    2. If we had more build up to Palpatine's return instead of just "Ok guys I guess he's back". I have no problem with the concept of Palpatine returning, I just think the process of it wasn't handled the best. But actually seeing Sheev back in action was a treat so I can't complain too much.
    3. The movie definitely needed some breathing room for things to set in and for the audience to take a breather, and have an ability to explain certain plot points and have even more character interactions (which is the strongest part of the movie imo), plus I think it would allow the plot to be fleshed out more and not so jumbled. I don't think the plot itself is bad just a bit rushed. I personally would've been fine if this movie was 3 hours long, and really if any Star Wars movie was gonna have the luxury of a long run time shouldn't it be the last one in the main saga?
    4. Ben Solo should have been more active in the final battle, and I wish he could've had a few more spoken dialogues with Rey before he dies.
    In the end, these things make the movie flawed, but I it's not enough for me personally to dislike it all together. I think it did a lot of things right (including this duel), and it made me cry at the end and I felt like a million dollars when I left the theater on my first viewing, and even after my rewatch I still enjoy it a lot.

    I'm yet to read the novelization, but it's a very interesting battle psychologically to me. Kylo not in one moment intents to kill Rey and that's clear. Earlier on he calls them a dyad in the Force, he knows they are one, but because of the constant rejection he gets from Rey, he feels like she is not seeing it, so lets her rage run through her to force her to see that at the core they are not as different as she tries to make them out to be. The truth is Rey knows they are a dyad, she doesn't want to admit it to Ben, because admitting it means she has to surrender to either the dark side or kill him, but she knows she can't leave him, he is part of her. The ending was strange indeed, but I personally find it a beautiful conclusion to their argument. They both lose and win. Rey realises that she has to give in to Kylo to save Ben so she reveals her heart to him and Ben understands at the cost of "death" that Rey does feel what he feels.

When Ben and Rey kissed there was an eruption of applause and when Ben died the theater went quiet then burst into NO, NO, NO! In my theater it was obvious the majority enjoyed Bens redemption and didn't want him to die. When Rey took the Skywalker name there was dead silence in the theater.
    Hearing Kathleen Turner talk about how fans loved the ending I wondered if I saw a different movie. When I saw the movie the majority of the audience did not like the ending.
