    I am a sugarfree glutenfree vegan since I am 14, with 27 I still got silent reflux which caued me Asthma. It took my doctor 5 years to find that out. He gave me an acid blocker, which didnt cure me.
    Later I found out, that acid reflux (silent or not) makes pepsines attach to your throat, which starts to tighten your chest and disolving your throat. I read that gurgling with alkaline water (baking soda plus water) is the only way to wash the pepsines away, and it worked.
    My doctor here in Germany would never believe in baking soda, but I did it and my asthma vanished.

      Yes, I can believe that. My grandma used to take a teaspoon of baking soda daily & she swore by it. How often do you gargle with the alkaline water and baking soda?

      Galliano please tell me how do you make this gargle... how much baking soda do you place in a glass of water? and for how long do you gargle and how often.... i have tightness on my chest 24/7. I eat healthy, have a healthy weight but the chest tightness, and feeling of shortness of breath is just there. Endoscopy done, all normal. Took protonix for 2 months, did help but not normal. I’m in trouble as well I was first diagnosed with COPD then asthma . So now they say it’s COPD asthma overlap. I’ve got gerd and I think it was mostly silent but now it’s not . I was prescribed omperazole but been reading cider vinegar before food so I’m just starting doing that . I will try the sodium bicarbonate mouthwash my throat is terrible now.

      @@lauraburgos7956 Sometimes it is tension in your body that causes all this. Give yourself a deep massage or have someone massage you. Massage your neck, back and your stomach gently. Also release stress, eat healthy and drink water. Make sure your vitamin levels are normal. I wish you the best.

    I was diagnosed with GERD and LPR with a chronic sore throat all due to stress in mid-July. Changed my diet and did most of the things you mentioned. I stopped with the Prilosec because you are right, that will just cause problems if used too much. My ENT doctor recommend something with sodium alginate. I take this after meals and also have the pill versions for when I'm not home - Gaviscon Advance Peppermint Flavour 500ml Liquid (Amazon). Almost two months and I'm doing well. I'll get another scope by my ENT in a week. Also, nasal spray of alkaline water and baking soda helped during the first month (there's info on that here on TH-cam). I don't need to do that anymore. Keep up the good work Ken!

    This is great Ken! I had Silent Reflux for several months a couple of years ago, which was really affecting my voice. I already had a good diet, and don't drink or smoke - but the key for me was cutting out caffeine. I also got into the habit of having 1Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (Organic - with "the mother" in it) diluted into a small glass of water 10 minutes before eating with every meal. Making my diet even more alkaline, not eating late at night and following this habit with Apple Cider Vinegar has made it go away, and stay away! ACV is amazing. Thanks for sharing this info! Singers can overcome this. :)

    This is a lot of useful information in one video. I've been suffering from a whole range of problems due to acid reflux for 20 years now and only just recently I got on the long road to full recovery. Believe or not, I've been on heavy antacids for 20 years (41yo now). After 6 years of almost giving up on my singing career, I'm cautiously optimistic now of regaining a fully operational and clean instrument once again. For everyone wondering what to do.. Do what this guy is saying. It's starting to work for me.

    Wow so I’ve been dealing with a chronic cough thinking I developed asthma. I decided to try taking a tum and the cough went away.
    This tells me it is definitely an acid issue and now I’m going to start the journey of a healthier lifestyle to address this. I know taking tums long term is not ideal.

      I developed a chronic cough in 2021. It's almost 2023 and im still coughing. Singing aggravates it. I haven't really sung in over a year. I received asthma tests which I passed with flying colors HOWEVER they found high levels of inflammation in my lungs and sent me to the Gastro. They found acid reflux in my esophagus and gave me Omezaprole. It doesn't really work. I'm currently looking for a natural remedy. Good luck on your journey!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Certain medications, such as some blood pressure medications can cause a cough. Additionally, chronic, persistent cough may occur as an adverse effect of omeprazole therapy. You may have to pare your diet WAY back then slowly add foods and pay close attention to how your body is affected. Be sure to not eat after 6:00PM and never lie down shortly after eating or drinking. Take daily walks. All of this will reduce your discomfort.

  • @PTSmash

    You're right when you say a lot of people with LPR don't know they have it, because I absolutely didn't until I spoke with an ENT. I thought all along that maybe I was eating too much and too fast, or wasn't drinking enough water (I admit that I wasn't and should've been more conscientious about it), the gunk in my throat was from too much dairy, and so on. But I didn't worry about it because I wasn't in excruciating pain. However, when I started to get more serious about doing theatre I knew I needed to find out what was going on. Its been an uphill battle figuring out what works for me, changing eating habits, finding an appropriate diet, etc, but I'm working at it. I actually found an online course from a website called Refluxgate which was created by a man who dealt with LPR for many years and overcame it, and the course has been a big help so far. It even comes with an acidity guide and a collection of recipes. I did take Omeprezole for a while but it didn't do much, but I've been on Ranitidine for about a year which is supposed to keep the acid in your stomach so it doesn't slide into your esophagus. Thank you for sharing this with us and it's always a relief to hear there is hope.

    • @gregpsalmwriter
      @gregpsalmwriter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew, tell me how is Refluxgate working for you now? It looks like a great course and I am considering it. I have LPR recently diagnosed by an ENT. I have taken PPI’s for forever and really was shocking to me to hear I still have reflux. I had never even heard of LPR. I also have a hiatal hernia which doesn’t help.

    Thank you Ken for your info on Acid reflux. I had it so bad that I burned my vocal chords and created a small soft node on my vocal chords. I was scoped twice by the best ENT in Sacramento. He gave me a sheet the second time about acid reflux. I thought it was from singing too hard for too long but no. I have the silent type until I woke up choking on fluid coming up my windpipe one nite. It felt like I was drowning..awful.
    Sleep on left side at an elevated position. Dont eat before you sleep and I chew gum all the time. I do take zantac when it really burns but try to stay away Ken is correct on everything he says about this. I notice the more stressful I am the worst it gets and my voice instantly goes horse. But good news my voice is coming back with the help of Ken's course. Ken I give you snaps for showing your stomach..shooting a rocket into your gut accidently must of been shocking. You are so cool and real. Take care. Juli

    Ken, I commented on one of your videos (The How to get rid of Mucus video) a while back complaining about having been a professional singer for 30 years and then not singing as much for about 5 years and then losing my range and quality, having a phlegmy voice, mucus and lump in my throat, etc... It was really disappointing and discouraging. I finally figured out that silent/acid reflux is my problem! I actually thought I was having a lung problem because the pain was in my chest and I also had a dry cough frequently. I didn’t immediately connect the vocal problem with what I thought was a lung problem, but when I went to the pulmonologist he said my lungs are fine and that he thought I had silent reflux. He gave me Prilosec and within a couple of weeks I felt much better and my vocal range and quality improved significantly. Anyway, I don’t want to keep taking the meds. I want to fix this with diet and natural remedies, so thank you for this great video!! I am super encouraged that I can correct this naturally and hopefully permanently. It gives me hope that you have had some problems like this. Sorry for the long comment!

    My ENT told me I had reflux laryngitis and prescribed proton pump inhibitors. I kept getting worse and worse and a year later was finally diagnosed with severe SIBO. Three years later I still have it and it has severely adversely affected my voiceover career. Antacids only promote bacterial imbalance in the gut and it can be a really rough road so don’t do it unless you have severe gastritis or cancer forming in your esophagus or something like that. Thank you for this!

  • @JohnM...
    @JohnM... 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    There are 6 main reasons why we get acid reflux:
    1. Age, (or antibiotics) resulting in lower levels of stomach acid.
    2. A stomach ulcer.
    3. Bacteria H Pylori - creating an imbalance of healthy versus unhealthy (get healthy from kefir)
    4.Hiatal Hernia.
    5. (Most overlooked) Stress.
    6. Bad diet, not chewing adequately enough, and eating too much.
    I don't really agree with this guy's take on high fat foods causing it. I used to get acid reflux that lasted an entire DAY, and since I started a ketogenic diet (high fat, medium protein, very low carbohydrates), and I have only had it once - fir 30 minutes. BUT, the rest of the video is spot on (also, cranberry supplements are good for stomach).
    The acid that reaches the esophagus is not from the stomach (hydrochloric), but from the small intestine - when there's not enough acid in the stomach, the digestive system compensates, and literally pushes up from the intestines, lactic acid, which has a different effect on the sphincter.

    Here's short version of my story: I've got similar problem few years ago. At first I mistaken this for a cold. After few visits to a doctors I've been diagnosed with GERD. Then turned out I've got a gallstone. It disturbed my gallbladder and stomach somehow which caused reflux. After gallbladder removal I've got another problem that caused reflux. Bile started to leak to the stomach changing pH-level which made cardia sphincter relax and made damage even worse.
    So here's some advices I wanna give according to my personal experience which weren't mentioned in this video:
    1- Make 24-Hour esophageal pH test, it will help to figure out what's exactly wrong with your acid level
    2- Check your gallbladder for gallstones. Turned out it might be a reason for a problem

It got worse every month to a point now can’t even speak for more than a few sentences and my I will lose my voice and my lymph will swell. I’ve been to numerous doctors and specialists and finally figured out I have GERD. Never in a million years would I expect a vocal teacher who I subscribed few years ago would talk about GERD! I've been suffering from gerd for half a year now but there's also something else that the doctors can't quite identify. I usually feel nausea and sometimes the esophagus on fire. This all started from eating some meat that was medium-rare and before that it happened because of rare meat both times at restaurants. While my body was able to fight it off before, this year it seems like it's reached breaking point and I can't shake it.

In this exc vid of yours,you’ve made MORE SENSE to me than any specialist I’ve ever seen! I obvs need to take a serious look at my nutrition/food etc...but I’m starting by making small changes and taking things abit at a time,cos like many people,I’ve realised I’m v.addicted to SUGAR & CARBS & have been most of my life! You have a lovely relaxing voice and altho I’m not a singer I do njoy singing to myself/my pets🤣🐹🐰🤣every day as therapy for my chronic pain! I find it helps tremendously. My pain cond has been diagnosed as sacroiliitis for which there is no cure😡 Hence my g.p & pain spclst have me on oremorph & OxyContin😩,without them I’d be totally bedbound. So it makes me wonder,when I’ve fully changed my diet/lifestyle to fresh/plant based foods will it actually benefit my health,GERD,etc....due to the horrible meds I’m on? I truly hate being on these meds but have no choice😩I’ve recently bought Dr.koufmans “acid reflux diet” bk So was v.glad to see u rec it. I’m going to buy her other book too,dropping acid. I have had a chronic cough, throat clearing and mucus in my throat for the past 14yrs. I saw over 10 doctors (GP's, ENT's, lung specialists) within this time and never got a proper diagnosis. Two years ago I was referred to a gastroenterologist and he diagnosed me with GERD. He recommended I do an endoscopy to see what damages were done. Findings were: Occasional H. Pylori, Chronic Gastritis and Reflux. Was treated with antibiotics to kill the bacteria and omeprazole. I was okay for a while but recently the cough came back with a vengence. I decided to take nexium on my own account and to diet (cut all the acid triggers), stop eating 3hrs before bed, eat small meals throughout the day, eat slowly, sleep upright etc. Today is day 7 and no improvement. I keep burping all day, tummy rumbles, coughing a lot, especially after a meal. I have an after taste of all the foods I have eaten for the day even till night time. I give up! After 14yrs I am tired. I have made an appointment with a new gastroenterologist. Hope he has some advice for me. To be honest I live in the Caribbean and our diet is horrible. Lots of spicy and fatty foods. It is my fault for not eating clean since I found out what I have. I probably need to keep at it for much longer before I see improvement. You seem to know alot about this stuff. Anyway, I have tried everything from giving up smoking, cutting out caffeine, tomatoes and sauce, cucumbers, raw onions, raw peppers and the rest of the foods you mentioned. I lived in ACV to get proper sleep as it would awake me. I also have done celery juice on an empty stomach in the morning, and Betaine before every meal. I done it all and it helped for a little while but it always came back😭 I had it to the point were a little bit of blood came out of my mouth. Scared me horribly. Was on and off of all those over the counter meds. My Dr. put me on a high prescription of medicine and it took at least 3 months before I could really feel any difference. I have been on this medication for some time now about 8 months and even though I know how harmful they are, I don't know what else to do. They help me so much now. However, I'm really afraid of these horrible side effects. If you know anything else to try... please let me know. You are an incredible singer and teacher too. Not super skinny, but I'm thin. I, too, have been hearing a lot of supporting evidence for these methods but it's almost always accompanied with the fact that people lose at least 50 lbs. I don't have that much to lose! I also eat nearly exactly what is recommended, and have for years. A few google *scholar* searches (in open-access, peer-reviewed journal articles) have shown me that the data doesn't strongly support *what* food is being consumed, but rather, when, how quickly, and what we are doing with our bodies (bending over vs remaining upright after meals). A meta-analysis shows that PPIs haven't been found to have adverse effects on those who are not in vulnerable populations like elderly or infants.
      I've been on PPIs for a year, though, and only combining them with tums is making a difference. Has anything improved for you?

    Dr K actually promotes antacids (pepsid). And says that you have to sleep at a 45 degree angle or there is no benefit to any other sleeping. I've read her books and consulted her 3 times. I agree though -- even taking pepsid (which gets rid of less acid) is extremely concerning when it comes to digestion. Also she's very opposed to ACV while healing. I feel like it's an impossible to win situation between LPR & digestion (and mine has been greatly affected).

    Great information. Thank you!! I'm suffering with severe acid reflux traveling to my throat and sinus. Making it hard to breathe. It all started when I was given samples of Restasis eye drops due to severe dry eyes.. I took the eye drops for a month, my health took a turn and now I am dealing with acid reflux for 7 months. The sad part is no medical professionals, believe me it was the eye drops. Finally fighting with doctors, I have an endoscopy in a week..

    Thank you, Ken. I've been having the worst time the last two weeks with extreme belching caused by acid reflux. It's brutal. My chest is in constant pain from continuous gas build up. I go for walks to help belch out the pressure. THANK YOU for talking about antacids! After two weeks of taking Tums to relieve gas the worst thing started to happen. Instead of belching profusely (like "normal" lately) the Tums make me explosively belch. Feels like an unstoppable puke. The pain from this is like being punched in the chest by a pro boxer. Anyone witnessing this immediately expresses great concern for my health. I've lost ten pounds in two weeks from being afraid to eat. I can't go on like this anymore.
    I spoke with my doctor yesterday and he prescribed medication, Dexilant.And we talked about my diet and physical activity level.
    It's gotta be my diet. Everything he/you said not to eat is what I've been eating lately. Too much drinking and potato chips at night. Chicken wings and fries (from the oven) at 11 PM. 30 pounds overweight. Starting tomorrow, I'm gonna stop drinking and eat healthier!
    That's not going to work, is it?
    Dammit.
    By the way, another thank you for explaining why I'm more comfortable sleeping on my left side!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should consider taking your diet back to the bare bones then slowly adding foods so you can determine their affects on you. Never, ever eat near bedtime. Alcohol and medication can have serious side affects. This are just simple changes for even non singers. If you are a singer then you have to treat your instrument with care and respect. If you had a beautiful guitar would you abuse it?

    THANK YOU KEN! I cannot thank you enough for your helpful hints and tips on acid reflux. I myself suffering a freak trip landed on a corner of a curb ( we call here in UK) which is the pavement edge that I bruised all my boob and caused a hernia but small. It still causes acid reflux when I eat certain foods especially like meat protein, and I am nut intolerant too. A lot going on like you. You were very brave and so helpful showing your stomach area to try to relate that was a real connection to me and helped me see you knew the issues this problem can cause. People go “oh I have acid reflux and hernia” as if it’s a throwaway comment I hear all the time but it causes no end of issues to the throat. Your help has been just an eye opener to what can be done with changing diet and looking up qualified persons to help..... thanks again Ken not a glamorous subject to touch on I applaud you👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💜💜💜

    My story... I was singer in hairband covers early 80's. I could sing anything the guys could play. Fast forward, spent the last 15 years on Prilosec. Everything was fine, karaoke career going great. Lol. I developed this gagging bug eyed cough a couple of years ago. No burn. The ENT put me on acid reducer morning and night. A few months ago, I decided this isn't working, my karaoke career is dead.... I did some googling, found out what you say about no acid. I now take dgl licorice,. digestive enzymes with betaine every meal, and phazyme in between meals to break up the gas in the stomach. I think I figured out that the gas from food in my stomach not digested coming up is the cause of coughing and gagging, but no burn. I am now off the prescriptions. I'm not cured, but doing way better than prescriptions. I may be ready to restart my karaoke career 😀

      Wow, Michael. See why I said so many times in this video "That's just plain CRAZY!" Our docs are who we have to turn to for medical advice, and yet, some of them are in such cahoots with the pharmaceutical companies that we have to be vigilant, even with otherwise legitimate docs. I guess that's what second opinions are for. Just because they're a doctor doesn't mean they understand YOUR situation. I hope you get your singing voice back in good working order soon.

      My singing voice kept giving out and at first I thought that it was due to the vocal changes that occur during pregnancy. After she was here a few years and nothing changed I went to the ENT assuming that maybe my tonsils needed to be removed. They stuck the camera in and saw that I had silent reflux. I was prescribed an acid reducer (the same type can be purchased otc.) I don't notice anything changing in my voice. So I'm glad that I read they didn't help you either and it's not just me. I gonna try the acv.
