  • In this video, I bust some of the myths about singing and sickness. It's not all like you might think.
Singing While Sick - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
I am not a medical doctor and I make no medical claims.
What I do claim is an incredible amount of experience when it comes to singing.
And much of the advice that I've seen given on the subject of singing when sick is thoughtless, playing the safe card without research, and just simply bad information.
How many times have you heard it said that when you come down with a cold or flu that you should just "rest your voice"?
And while this may be true for some forms of strep throat or laryngitis, this is not true for the common cold, etc.
When we get sick, our vocal cords become inflamed. And much of the time mucus resides on the cords keeping them thick and losing their elasticity and suppleness.
The longer we go without exercising the cords correctly, the more the cords become leathery and lose their resiliency.
This is the exact opposite of what we need or want when it comes to singing.
Instead, in my personal experience of 40 years of singing, we want to carefully exercise the cords so that they can get back their robust elasticity, resilience and suppleness.
In this video, I discuss this in hopes to help you on your journey for singing and particularly when you get sick.

Hi, Ken. I've had colds before and I've managed to sing through them. What I did was just take it easy on myself, practise gentle vocal exercises and breathe, and eventually, I managed to fight through my cold and sing like a pro. Thank you for doing this video. I really appreciate it. Love Grace from England xxx
PS When Pink sang the National Anthem at the 2018 Super Bowl, she had the flu. So she took medication before then in order for her to deliver an amazing National Anthem singing performance.
PPS In case you were wondering who signed the anthem in ASL (American Sign Language), it was a lady called Alexandria Wailes.

So glad I found your channel! I met you in Sweden 95. Went to a singing work shop with Bo in Oskarshamn. Remember that your guitarist back then was a fan of Malmsteen. Great channel!

When you go to an ENT, you tell them you can’t sing anymore you’ve lost yer voice, they feel your neck for 1 min stick a tube down your nose & 3 min later call it “SILENT REFLUX”, prescribe Prilosec & shove you out the door.
Can anyone relate & is this really the problem?

It can be because the acid is coming up the esophagus without you really realizing it and it make things not function right. You may be able to alter your diet especially before laying down and elevate your head a bit when reclining. I couldn't take OTC for it so my doctor made those suggestions. It's also helpful to get that minimized for other reasons besides singing. I hope it helps you.

I just went back to my ENT a couple days ago and he said I sound better speaking than I did last year. I've had a possibly paralyzed vocal chord that causes tones to be cut out or a very unappealing vibrato for the past few years. A couple months ago I noticed the back of my throat and roof of my mouth in back was sore intermittently. He said it's a mucal virus that's healing on it's own now. With research, I've found it may be from my asthma inhalers, but I've also found a few things to try to remedy it. Basically, antiviral probiotics that help with gut balance, too. I've also noticed that my pulse is lower than usual and I get fatigued due to other meds so if I compensate for that it makes a big difference in my singing, too. Ken, your vocal exercises are so helpful to me and I appreciate you sharing your tips, too. Thanks so much. Love that shirt, too!

Personally, I have not had a problem singing when sick. I can get congested, and sound clogged, but generally retain full range and can sing everything. After can be painful if I get those sore in my nasal cavity. Sinuses can get really dry and brittle right after the cold/flu. Great for rock/metal for me because my voice is usually ultra clean, adds a little grit. I don't care for that when I am doing opera though.

I'm thinking something out of your normal box. How about reacting to that NEW viral country song........NORTHMEN NORTH OF RICHMOND.
He's got a unique voice and decent guitar playing.
I know it's kinda like jumping into a fast moving train, but right now it's no 1 on ITunes.
