Just purchased a 2020 230 xdrive. One of the main reasons was the size is right having comfort and practicality but still feels really sporty. Put it into sport mode and you feel like you are driving a sports car with instantaneous acceleration and great road holding ability. The ZF 8 speed transmission always seems to be in the right gear and in comfort mode highway drives are quiet and relaxed. Most new BMW’s have been upsized but this reminds me of my 2001 330i which I really loved being a true drivers car. Thanks for highlighting so many of the 2’s great qualities.

What a great video. I'm in the market for a car at the moment and after reading the spec sheet of a 2015 228i, I realized it had all that I wanted. Amazing stuff, I agree with all of it, cargo space is unreal. I would add that there is even an Xdrive version for people like me who get snow for months out of a year. And with purchasing the 4cyl version I am capable of achieving 35mpg on the highway in eco-mode. The ability to have a snow-going, economic, but 5 second sports car is a dream come true. I only paid 23K for mine with 20K miles. Find me a car that does all that with a luxury badge for 30K

I, like you, think the 228 is a beautifully designed automobile. My 228 has the eighteen inch wheels which match well with the overall dimensions of the car, in fact, I think they're the perfect size. Any larger or smaller size would spoil the harmony. My favorite angle of view is the low and front 3/4 shot. The hood and fender seem just a little longer in a supermodel leggy type of way at that angle. I agree with your great review completely.

RWD/AWD, auto/manual, diesel/gas, 4/6 cylinders, coupe/convertible, track beast or comfy daily driver... there's a 2 Series for almost everyone out there. Love the subtle, handsome styling. Interior materials aren't unreal and the car lacks a few toys, but the ergonomics and build quality are top notch. I'm just glad BMW still has the balls to offer a sporty coupe with a longitudinal engine, rear-biased driving characteristics, and a 6 cylinder. A standout in its class for sure in this day and age. BMW put a lot of effort into a car that doesn't sell nearly as much as their other models, and I hope coronavirus doesn't affect the future of the next 2 Series because it's absolutely a car that doesn't need to exist but I love that it does.

I own a 17 220d manual. Although it’s a replacement to the 1 series coupe, I think it fits the gap between the e92 and the 1 series. 4 series looks loads bigger then the e92. The manual feels great to use and it’s definitely a pretty car. 220d js fun but almost a bit boring, but ig that’s bc it’s a diesel and I haven’t really had any chance to have fun it in, despite doing 5k miles in 3 months. Definitely happy I chose it over a golf gtd though. Got mine for a really good price with every option ticked minus 2 (no harmen kaaden which doesn’t bother me and no pro nav). Red heather leather seats, heated steering wheel, sun roof, dual zone climate etc. it’s an amazing car all around, just wish that 6th gear was longer as I’d like to sit around 1700rom at 70mph rather than 2k

What a great review! i have watched so many reviews this week as we searched for our next car and none told the story of this car as you have.
I'm used to BMW 3 size cars and I've been having a hard time thinking about getting something a little smaller, but i know i really should.
i looked at the 1 Series, a nice enough car, a step too far for me.
It didn't make sense to me that no one made a nice car to fit the Series 2 space.
The Audi A3 is horrid, so dated, like something from the 90's. Mazda3 a maybe, or even the 6, but nahh.
You have shown me what i wanted to believe. The 2 Series can be the midsize car while not making me feel cramped, missing features or, worst of all, slow!

Great review and I agree with it fully. I have a 2018 230i Sport. Yours is an MSport. Which suspension do you have? MSport or Adaptive MSport (Track Handling Package)? Have you compared standard, MSport, and Adaptive MSport? I've only driven the standard suspension. Was wondering how stiff the others are? Standard handles great and is fairly comfortable too. Where I live, most of the 2 series are 228i/230i in Sport line. I occasionally see an MSport as well as M235i/M240i and M2, but most are 228i/230i Sport

    • @BetweenTheWheels
      @BetweenTheWheels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

My car has the Msport (non adaptive) suspension. It isn’t harsh, definitely softer than my Z4 was, which may be due to the run flats on the Z4 being very hard. I have not driven one with adaptive suspension so I can’t compare. The car handles well, I need to test it on track and see how urgent a set of coilovers will be.

@@BetweenTheWheels I have 18 inch run flat performance/summer tires on mine. My only complaint is road noise. Not sure if non-run flats would help with that but the roads are so horrific where I live and run flats are so helpful for me. With my last car, I was always having to call for roadside assistance due to a flat tire and my back problems prevent me from changing a tire on my own. At least with these run flats, I can still drive.

Have you tried out the previous generation E82 135i coupe ? If you can put the 2 series modern tech to one side and focus on the driving experience its amazing. Has so much feedback from the road surface and sharp throttle response. It rolls through corners and grips with very little understeer if you're on equal sized Michelins all round. Mine has a birds bmw LSD diff and suspension upgrade with 225 40 18s. Comfortable with great body control and so much extra traction from the magic Diff. The steering is very good perfectly medium weighted. I found the 2 series steering a bit too light for me and dead feedback. Nothing coming back to the driver about the road. Many people love all the 2 series Tech but I prefer a simple sat nav thats actually a good map and I hate stop start engine thing at the traffic lights. You may find this strange but I rejected the 240i because of the dead steering and too much technology overload. I want to drive the car myself without technology interfering thank you very much. All I can say is try out a 135i coupe one day. The young drivers of today don't know what they are missing out on.

    • @BetweenTheWheels

Yes, I love the 1 series and I think, as you say, it’s a fantastic mix of size, straight ahead driving feel and eschews the glitzy tech. Sadly, they’ve been in such demand they’re were more expensive than my budget for a straight ahead track car and lacked some of the things I wanted in a daily.

Sorry to hear about the reduced choices for you. In America we often don’t get some of the variants that European markets do, so I feel your pain. I have been a six cylinder fan for all of my more powerful cars, including those from BMW with their fantastic power bands. That said, this car makes me appreciate the usable power of a torquey four cylinder. I don’t know the 220i but I’d say if it has decent torque, it may be the way to go. The reality is, none of us can use sub-five second 0-60 times on the open road.

It is a shame that 2, 3 and 4 series engines are let down by systemic design faults that BMW seemingly ignores, e.g. leaky oil filter gaskets (causing belts to jump sometimes resulting in engine failure), high pressure fuel pumps failures, and leaky valve cover gaskets. I am considering purchasing an M235i but the N55 doesn't look super robust to me.
