    Driving the BMW 230i makes you wonder how so much acceleration can come out of just a 2.0L turbo inline-four cylinder punching out 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It certainly fights above its weight class in terms of performance per horsepower.

    Okay, I hear ya guys, 250 HP may not be low, but we're talking relatively here. I live in the US market, and in the US market when you spend $35k on something sporty (domestic or not), you can get a lot more than 250 HP. Can we all also agree that it's neat that the 240i can match the Mustang GT's 0-60 with 100 less HP? Yeah yeah, underrated, but no one is going to underrate their engines by 100 HP in a market where HP sells cars. My point was the car is cool, and makes do with less. It's neat, I enjoyed it, and I hope you all did to. Have a solid day!

      The point is that any good youtube channel today, such as yours, is watched in many countries and we do understand that there are other realities out there, but the same way that we do, you should also be sometimes a bit more carefull in the words you use because people may take it badly and for a person living in a country where 250hp is more than 99% of the car fleet and is also a dream car and saying as if it was nothing can make people feel a bit odd about it. I hope you understand, I'm not bashing.

      I think there are other cheaper cars that can make you smile like you did in the BMW with just about 90 HP like the basic Honda Civic 1998-2002 which is really quick. I dont get it why all must be for the bmw ok I know the old bmw till like E36 are good but the new ones are not as cheap as some early Japanese cars or no where near their engines....

    In Europe, the "low power" base model is the 218i, with only 136hp out of a 1.5 litre inline straigt 3. Now that is LOW power :) Here everything above 200hp is pretty much considered powerful.

      136WHP is not "low power", chap... Not by a long shot.
      You can have a pretty quick car with 136WHP, all it takes is to strip it a little bit to reduce the weight, and you will have a quick and fun car with "just" 136WHP.
      Power to weight ratio, power per litre, even the centre of gravity plays a factor in it. Give a wekk to me and that "low powered" 218i and I will make a beast of it, if you want a fast car... And guess what, I will not even spend money on it, just a few drops of sweat.
      Here in Brazil we draw out 500WHP or MORE from inline 4's, that originally had 60-80WHP. Hell, with a few tweaks to the engine and better injectors we got 95WHP from a 55WHP car...

      Wyatt Foster that's pretty much spot on... dyno's of the 228i N20 engine showed it making about 240whp, or 270-275chp. This new motor should be making a little bit more than that

    • @Jacob-xd3ko
      @Jacob-xd3ko 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the difference between WHP and regular horsepower? Is that like the number that is loses by the time it gets to the wheels or something?

    • @Eurosport.Automotive
      @Eurosport.Automotive 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jacob that's right, bhp or chp (brake/crank horsepower) is measured at the crank. It's the power the engine makes without accessories and transmission/ driveline losses. Whp is measured at the wheels by a dyno. Frictional losses make a car's whp rating less than its bhp/chp rating.

      Levent Ergün it's all relative - this is a bit of a fat piggy so that isn't that much power. Also, I never believe BMW power ratings. They are notorious for under rating / being very conservative and listing power that is closer to what's at the wheels than the crank. I am guessing this car would dyno at 250 which puts it closer to a 280hp at crank.

      RationallySkeptical maybe in the US, Not in other countries..
      Like in my country, I would say most have about 130 hp being the average. The popular choices all have about 102-106hp. The upper limits of 'affordable' gets this 248hp guise. Having anything more than 300 in an engine that's not a 2.0 ( or not a Volvo drive -e T6) means you'll be faced with a yearly roadtax of 200 USD for a 2.5l with 300+hp or more with bigger Cc engines

    Great review. I own a 2017 230i manual myself, and it is the best car I've ever had. I test drove the 4 and 6-cylinder cars back-to-back, and I preferred the handling balance of the 4-cylinder to the extra power of the 6. Yeah, the 6-cylinder has more power, but it also weighs 150 lb more, and all that way hangs in the nose of the car past the front axle, and you can really feel it in the turns.
    I completely agree with your assessment of the Track-Handling Package. I got both it and the M-Sport packages, the M-Sport being largely cosmetic, but it gave me the M-Sport steering wheel, which I *greatly* prefer to the default one on this car.
    Again, thanks for this great and thorough review.

      The M package on the 230i would have given you a different steering wheel, aero package. and slightly stiffer shocks. The test 230i didn't have the M package, but it had the track handling package, which is adjustable shocks, Brembo brakes, speed sensitive steering, and summer performance tires (MPSS). I'll take the track handling package over the M Sport package any day on the 230i.

    A hidden feature of the mirror switch (if you don't read the manual) is that one position enables the passenger side mirror dip for reversing.

  • @dknollRX7
    @dknollRX7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reasoning for not having a center position for the outside mirrors is to turn off or on the mirror dip function. That has been a staple of BMW since at least the E46 and maybe earlier. When you put the vehicle into reverse, the passenger side mirror will dip downward so you can more easily see obstacles like curbs or parking spot lines. This feature only works if the mirror adjustment position is on the driver's side. If it's on the passenger's side, it deactivates the feature.

    Hey Jason ! That rev-hang is definitely an issue on modern cars, but from my experience with BMWs, the clutch actuation is horrible due to the CDV (clutch delay valve). The M cars don't have these horrible valves, but the regular models do and have had for quite some time. On my E39, I removed it the day I got the car, and you can let the clutch out a lot faster. BMW has been catering to noob stick shift drivers for some time, so that it's hard to stall the car.

American made cars like crhysrler, jeep, dodge, ram suck reliability wise. I'll give you that. But Chevy, Ford, is making some killer cars that are both quick and yes, what I'm about to say may blow your mind, but they can corner. And the best part you can get em for half the price of your German engineering with probably about the say reliability. And before you say it, no its bow going to be as fancy inside or out, but again half the price.

    • @Lamar-zx5tp
      @Lamar-zx5tp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      For part of your comment, the opposite is true. For the other parts, it's pretty much nonsense. What the hell is a "550CU" American car? In reality, American cars generally have comparable weight and efficiency. In some cases, more efficient, even with 2x the displacement and greater performance. Take the Corvette for example and its 29MPG rating, 30+MPG real world fuel economy, which is better than any comparable German car. And when it comes to track performance, American cars are currently dominating, beating any comparable German. The Viper ACR is not only faster than cars its price, it's faster than car 4x the price. Same with 1LE Camaros, the GT350 and all other top ranging performance cars from the US. It's actually embarrassing to watch how far the Germans have fallen when it comes to performance.

      @crabjoe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is well assumed.... not well known. Ask anyone that knows dynos and they'll tell you a dyno is only good for comparing the baseline of a given car on that dyno versus the same car with a mod on the same dyno.
      BTW, how many if these N20 dyno numbers used DIN procedures for testing? I've seen dyno numbers from a European dyno that did DIN and it was dead on to what BMW advertised.

    • @Eurosport.Automotive

      crabjoe hardly anyone in North America is going to use DIN procedures for dyno runs. Most will be following SAE. If the countless dynos are not enough for you, just look at a stock 228i quarter mile time and trap speed.... 13.7 @ 101 you will NOT achieve those kinds of numbers at 3500lbs (3350curb plus driver) on street tires. It's going to take at least 260-270bhp to pull that off.

Yes my car is quicker than most cars on the road, but that's because most cars are Camrys, Accords, Sonatas, and civics.. with NA 4 cylinders. I wish my 230 weighed about 400+ lbs less.. Then maybe the 248hp would be enough.. But right now, it's a pig compared to other turbo charged 2 liter cars on the road.

    230i low power 😂😂 really?? A 218i with like 100 maybe but not 250. Maybe it's US roads but in Europe 250 is easily enough to be considered quick. Heck most 2.0 tdis with like 150-180 are quick enough to the point that going from 30-50/60 takes barely any time at all

    • @BarbecuedPossum
      @BarbecuedPossum 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I mean that the roads are more straight so more emphasis is put on straight line performance than the whole package. I know physics are the same there you codpiece.
      Yes considering he's clearly an intelligent guy he should know that 250bhp is more than what 97% or something of all cars on the road have today.

    • @crabjoe
      @crabjoe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't compare this car to 97% of all cars on the road today. You have to compare it to other cars in it's class. Based on class, 248hp is low. Maybe I should compare this car to my truck.. My truck puts out close to 400hp and near 900 ft/lbs of torque.. Dang.. compared to my pickup trucks numbers, the 230i's engine is a slouch...
      BTW, other than the numb steering and the throttle lag, the 230i is a really fun car to drive... It's not as fun as driving a Mustang, but it's fun... The thing can go around bends and change lanes like it's on rails.

    I have a 1.4tsi Golf and it also has terrible rev hang. You will get used to shifting slower and holding the clutch down a little longer as it doesn't really matter that much in real traffic anyway. However after years of having only driven one manual car (my golf) and plenty of automatics, I eventualy got to drive an e92 330i 6sp. First couple of kilometers I managed to do the opposite of lurching (when the car doesn't lurch forward but suddenly jerks backward) on every upshift.

    It's funny reading Europeans say 250hp is a lot! Europeans produce high powered twin turbo v10 station wagons, 1,500 hp supercars, v12 twin turbo SUVs. I could go on. I understand a lot of people drive 100hp diesels because that's all that's needed in many areas but either way, 250 is not a lot but more than most people need, I'll say that.

    • @straxwb
      @straxwb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually, most people here drive shitty 100HP diesels because that's what is affordable, and because those mere 100 horses take you to work and back home everyday without sucking too hard on your bank account. Unfortunately, here the word "downsizing" has been taking over, now it's full of low displacement turbos with 2-3 cylinders and 80-120 HP or crappy high mileage city cars. I myself am forced to drive a Fiat shitbox everyday because that's what we have at home. So yea, 248 HP is not "just", or low power, by any means in EU. Unfortunately, I might add.

Also your eye situation sucks but it could have been solved with a pair of goggles or a racing helmet. And I don't see why you have to take the Atom to Germany if there are plenty of great tracks in the US. Just practice a little bit and exercise a bit of caution and you won't die.

    As a former owner of a base 1 series (128i) with the 6 speed stick I can confidently say that the 230i seems better in just about every way except for the manual gearbox, which might be the same or slightly worse. If I was going to buy another BMW I don't think I would go for the 6 speed stick again. It was decent but not great.
