    I'm a BM guy and not exclusively a professional painter but I do my fair share. I've been let down by other products (Valspar Duramax and Sherwin Williams) that it's not worth it trying others. While Aura is great, reading your replies, I fully agree that Regal Select is an excellent product that will solve all your exterior paint problems. Coverage, work ability, color and leveling of the paint, it's just so nice to work with. Currently re-doing a door that my customer bought the paint and filler, SW resilience and miniwax interior/exterior wood filler. Failed after 4 years. While I can most likely get away with not priming with Regal Select, I'm going to anyways. On the flip side, I refinished a 100 year old very weathered door two years ago, filled with 2 part wood epoxy (JB weld) primed and used Regal Select. Looks like I painted it yesterday. For professionals using Regal Select, you will have a long lasting finish. For homeowners, it will forgive your sins if you haven't done an excellent job prepping or if your paint skills need improvement. Touch ups will blend without a full re coat.

    So appreciative of your review of these two BM products.
    I used the Regal "Low Lustre" on my roll up garage door and was happy with the egg shell type finish. Also liked this product since the egg shell type finish didn't show brush marks too extensively.
    I used the Regal "Soft Gloss" on two flat steel exterior doors wanting a slightly glossier finish. Well, I was very unhappy with this product's leveling capability. Painted these doors in my garage out of the sun with minimal breeze. Approximately 70*. I applied a moderate coat with the door in a horizontal position with a 3/8" nap roller then once the surface was covered I used the weight of the 3" paint brush immediately to knock down the roller "nubs". Paint was still very wet. When it dried, you could see the brush marks. This product performs nothing like BM Advance.

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For sure the soft gloss is going to have a much shorter open time than Advance. Advance is a speciality interior product which has one of the longest open times of any of the current hybrid trim paints. That gives it plenty of time to level out. If you use soft-gloss again then I’d recommend skipping the roller and just brush the product on directly. You’ll still see brush marks but that’s the nature of a hand brushed finish.

    • @timfischer1613
      @timfischer1613 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First, thank you for your timely response. I believe you're correct when you said it's just the nature of hand application with a brush. I did do another door first using only a brush, but that actually was worse. Spraying would be the ultimate application for a smooth finish, but, as a homeowner that wouldn't use a sprayer that often, it's difficult to justify the expense for a quality sprayer. If you have a suggestion that would be GREAT.
      Also, I heard that SW did have an exterior paint paint that would level like Advance. You have the name of that paint?
      Thx for all your help!!

    I used to be an exclusive Ben Moore user, but the homeowner price of Regal Select is now $75/gallon, which is just too much. (And the staff would belly ache about custom colors.) The top of the line Diamond Vogel exterior paint is around $68/gallon, which is a lot, but under that $70 threshold. That's now my go to.
    If any of the top manufacturers allowed homeowners to get pro pricing, they could own the DIY market.

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve had a similar thought. We use Ben Moore for exterior and Sherwin Williams for interior with a few specialty products mixed in.

    Again...not sure if you pay attention to old videos, but had a quick inquiry so figured I'd give it a shot. I'm going to repaint my mother's carport walls and ceilings, which are white...and from 1972. :) A bit of peeling paint above a dryer vent, and there are a few cracked spots along the walls, but otherwise I think all I need to do to prep it is wash the walls down. Had gone by SW before I tripped across this video and was pretty well convinced to go with their "Duration" white, with extra white tint and a hint of black thrown in. After watching this vid went to the closest BM store...and ended up dealing with a guy who seemed a bit clueless. Finally figured out I'd have to pick a specific shade of white in the Lustre for the carport walls. Their pricing is about $10 more per gallon than the SW Duration. Since this is exterior paint that won't be sitting in the sun, do you suspect that SW Duration would work fine? The folks at the SW store were very helpful in running through all the options, and offered cogent explanations why of the choices they had available they'd suggest Duration for this job. But after watching your video, I'm a bit concerned this may have been one of the ones you used before and determined didn't work long-term. Any insight you care to offer would be appreciated.

    • @SuperVassarBrothers

      I’m assuming when you say carport that you’re painting the interior of a garage. In which case Duration or Emerald would work great on the walls. I went with Emerald matte in Extra White for my garage. Here’s my current load out for interior products in case you’re interested.

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd still go with Moorguard, but you might want to ask around and see what folks are using in your area. Moorguard and Moorglo both have good adhesion, so you can do a test spot and see if you get a good bond. If it's not bonding properly then you can try something like Fresh Start which is a great primer from Benjamin Moore.

    When painting exterior window trim and pvc brick moulding with BM softgloss in June how long do you have to wait between coats and what primer do you recommend applying first?

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can re-coat fairly quickly depending on conditions. 1-2 hours is reasonable if it’s warm out.
      If the trim has already been painted or is primed from the factory then you don’t need to prime. If it needs primer then pretty much any standard exterior primer will work.

    I just use SW rain refresh for my porch railing/spindles and super deck for the floors. The rain refresh was pretty pricy but was 35% off so $70/gallon. I really love it so far. My main concern is longevity on the deck. I goofed and primed everything and had to strip and sand the wood. Took me a month to complete everything but happy with the results (just don’t look under the stairs)

    • @jhirn2957

      The diamabrush helped tremendously with stripping the paint. Took some practice to prevent gouging as it’s incredibly aggressive, but chemical strippers and 36 grit didn’t stand a chance. Get a dust shroud for you angle grinder. They sell on specific for dismabrush but a $20 one from Amazon worked well enough.

    When spraying is not an option, What would you use for the smooth metal exterior front door and door trim and couple new smooth columns? Benjamin Moore doesn’t have anything like emerald urethane. Does soft gloss leave brush lines and roller texture on smooth surfaces? On second floor it doesn’t matter but on front entry I see a lot of brush lines and texture on new columns from even the smoothest roller. Wish Benjamin Moore would have a exterior trim enamel like emerald urethane or behr hybrid trim enamel.

    What would you paint fiberglass columns that have a woodgrain texture?

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d go with the soft gloss that I mention in this video. Here’s a video demonstrating how I paint fiberglass columns and I use soft gloss on them.

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd recommend Porch and Floor Enamel from Sherwin Williams. I've used that a fair amount and it seems to hold up well. Most paint companies have a version of that product, but that's the one I've used the most. You can also add sand or another gritty additive if you need it to be more grippy.
      Good luck with your project!

    Not a painter, looking for the best paint for 50 year old outdoor painted wood window and door trim. So far, Sherwin Williams Emerald, Behr Marquee and Benjamin Moore Regal Select seem to be the top contenders.

      Wow. Calling around, the big box stores either won't answer the phone or they are clueless. Lowe's has Sherwin Williams, Home Depot Behr and Menard's Dutch Boy. I found a somewhat local flooring store that answered the phone, was knowledgeable and has Benjamin Moore! BM it is!

    • @SuperVassarBrothers

      In my experience the Moorglo and MoorGuard are easier to work with and are capable of producing a better looking finish than the SW products.

    Is soft gloss like a semi-gloss

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's closer to satin which is a step down from semi-gloss. It's considered a "factory" finish.

    I watched another TH-cam channel that claimed Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore are living off their name and not worth the extra money. Any truth to this?

    • @SuperVassarBrothers
      @SuperVassarBrothers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a rather broad statement, and I'd be curious as to what paint they are recommending. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore both make some great paint and some crappy paint. It really depends on what line of paint you are using from each brand. I don't disagree that paint is getting expensive. We've had several price increases recently, but that's true for all paints regardless of the brand. There are some products that I think are over priced from both companies, but I also think they have some great paints that perform well and are worth the money. Morglo and MoorGuard are great examples. All of the professional painters that I know use Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, or a combination of the two.

      Yes and no. Interior we use Sherwin Williams. Except when they are out of stock (supply issues) or a client specifically asks for BM. Exterior we use BM. The regal select eggshell by BM is great for walls, but we don't like BM ceiling paint or trim paint as much.
