    I have been painting for over 20 years and this guy does the best job of explaining exterior paints and why they are good. Agree with his choices but would put Behr Ultra in 1st place. Reason being is it applies smoother. Marquee dries too fast and tends to leave roller marks.

      I sold it back in the day and YEPPERS what you say is very true. They must be putting gold in it now days is all I can figure. I'm sorry, I don't care how much R and D and a little bit of tech you put in it, it usually comes down to titanium dioxide levels and I sure don't see how even 40 years can have inflated that much as in three figures a gallon.

      @@equipman811 I worked in the paint Dept. in the mid-70's (hardware and electrical also store 1540 (speedway/Indianapolis IN). Sears made their OWN paint with in house labs and manufacturing. They took great pride in it and having the most advanced tech. We once had a presentation on it and the people who made it scientists, everyone was really proud of their produce. they had fields with open samples on wood outdoors some on for like a decade and they would do tests on it of all kinds looking for deterioration and then trying to figure out how to keep it from happening... They had comparisons from the other companies and the Sears stuff was consistently better.

I would be most grateful if you would be so kind as to offer some brief thoughts on sheen level for exterior home using the Behr Marquee. I have a lot of shade and my 80 year old wood siding is full of imperfections. I'm probably the last wood holdout in my neighborhood, but it's still solid and I love it; so much craftsmanship. Is flat too low? What do you suggest in the Marquee? Many, many thanks. Dan in Ohio.

    I own a high end painting company also high end faux finishing company. Behr colors definitely change more over the years. When we do touch ups years later Behr has the most color change/oxidation. Sherwin williams Emerald and BM Aura are better paints, but yes, more expensive. But…. Labor and time is most expensive. So that extra cost, IF PREPPED CORRECTLY, is worth it if you’re getting 12 years vs 8 years. I’ve used Behr for a few years but had to stop when we would go back for touch ups or repairs and the colors always faded. S-W and BM are most pros go to. We only use Emerald and Shermax or big stretch caulking.

      As a homeowner for the past 40 years, I have painted with BM, SW, n Behr paints. The minuscule differences between the high end paints and Behr paints do not justify 2x or more of the costs, especially since most people repaint their homes, change the colors, every 4-5 yrs.

    Great straightforward comparison ! One thing I love about SW is their LRV values are on the back of their paint cards. I've never found anyone in the paint department at Home Depot to even know what LRV means. Critical when painting plastic wood such as Azek and others. We use a lot in exterior trim areas of upper end homes in our company.

    First off sherwin is a hydrophobic paint and only one on the market. It literally cleans itself unlike Aura. You can’t even comparing the two. Emerald is the most durable paint in the market. I’ve used all these and emerald as far as durability is the best. If you painting a house on the coast where salt is a factor definitely Emerald over aura.

  • @johnbarr6616
    @johnbarr6616 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Sherwin Williams products are guaranteed to fade per SW, at an acceptable rate of 50% in the first year due to their use of generic pigments. This is per SW’s own admission. Their lifetime coatings are prorated. The lifetime per SW is 8 years and is non-transferable with original sales receipt required for a material only warranty that is extremely difficult to collect . Installer error is largely to blame on most installs.
    Bang for the buck....Benjamin Moore Regal High build. A fantastic product based on the old MorGlo from years ago. Aura is the top of the line but you will get years of service with bridging capabilities on repaints and a high build product for new construction in a mid priced line. It works!
    Tips from a 37 year veteran of the painting industry, not affiliated with any manufacturer. Good luck.

    I remember about 1980 in college. I worked at Sears, Employee #13805, (store 1540/Lafayette Square/Speedway Indiana) who at the time, had the best paints to be honest. I still remember stock numbers... Let's see 11469 our best paint roller and 33015... Weatherbeater white... Scarred for life I am...
    I always dreaded spring and all the over winter frozen latex paint coming in. "Something is wrong with it." Yep, you stored in the unheated garage didn't you. Ohh, that classic few inches of clear yellowish liquid then the 2/3rd of granulated color below... AND, fall when people would come in wanting exterior paint and the temps were falling into the freezing range. We would warn every one of them that if they put it on below around 45 degrees they would have problems in the future as it wouldn't cure correctly, but hey they knew better. IN the spring they'd be coming in, "You sold me bad paint..." as it was coming off the wall outside after having not been cured and then freezing on the wall during the cold night... Sure it made it to Spring then came off. WE finally stopped selling it after a certain date...
    Oh and and the people dragging the "INterior" paint cans into the store after painting it on the outside, oh that Sunflower Yellow, I don't know what hold it had on people... I coulda got it for you in weatherbeater but hey, that was twice as expensive (like 15 bucks in 1980 a gallon) vs that INterior paint. But, hey I painted this on my house and it washed off first storm. YEP, see where it says INterior, like INside, not outside? See that large lettering on the back "For use on interior applications ONLY"?
    We always tried to talk to people, but on busy Saturdays they were lining up at the registers... We won a national award once for sales... AND, since we were Sears, it was "Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back..." and we did it... But we did draw the line at paying for labor and stupidity...unless they were really a KAREN (they didn't have that name back then but.., if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...) and we'd call the manager down and he'd give them money for their labor and stupidity... They really had to be Aholes thought to get it. But for the regular people, they remembered our little polite lectures on the proper use of paint and the fact we DID give them their money back.
    And I also worked in Paint in the early 70's high school before going to the Marines who paid for my FREE college and those thousand of four gallon boxes of paint I hefted gave me the best upper body strength and helped me get through boot camp like a champ...

Based on other TH-cam videos (as today is the first I've seen Ryan's videos), we chose Benjamin Moore Advance. It looks fantastic. We used Zinsser Bin primer (shellac), which dried in about 20-30 minutes and gave us a rock solid surface to paint on; we did do a light sanding between the primer and the first coat of paint. Best of luck on your project.
      We hope to paint the exterior of our home this summer, so will be taking a serious look at the Behr Marquee, based on Ryan's recommendation.

I bought a beginner HVLP sprayer(fuji semi-pro) and have zero regrets. Now I want to tackle my metal garrage doors with my HVLP sprayer/turbine. Both Homedepot and Behr Canada say that none of their paints can be thinned. Sherwin-W suggested their Latitude paint at about $140 a gallon (Canadian) It's too costly for me. Do you have any advice or other recommendations... ? Thanks in advance.

    • @diypainting
      @diypainting  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for following the channel, much appreciated! Many paints will recommend not to thin, main reason is if they do recommend, then they have to warranty and it doesn't do them any good to let people add things to the paint then still warranty it. In all reality, you can usually thin these paints 10% with zero issues. But, exterior paints do tend to be pretty thick, you may have to thin even more to get it to spray from your HVLP. An airless sprayer like the Wagner Control Pro 150 might be a better option. You can buy them here: diypaintingsupply.com/collections/exterior/products/control-pro-170

    Emerald is meh.
    SW Superpaint is my go to for SW exterior paints.
    Behr Masonry, stucco and brick is my reasonable cost recommendation to my customers. It’s affordable, 1 coat and a backroll and the CPVC ratio leans towards higher pigment and less fillers.

      Once fully cured, Sherwin-Williams Resilience Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint can handle extreme temperatures, including very cold conditions such as -40 degrees Fahrenheit. The paint is formulated to withstand harsh weather conditions, including freezing temperatures, without cracking, peeling, or losing adhesion. Good luck!

      They have lots of options. I could make an entire video just about Behr paint, actually that’s a good idea. For exterior trim, their Marquee Exterior is really great and will hold up fantastic.

    If you ever try Harris Paint, you will never try anything else. The only one that came close was Sherwin Williams, but their quality declined over the years, so Harris Paint stands alone on top.

    I could not disagree with you more. I have Bear results of the paint failing and rotten wood falling off my house. I'm doing my best to be nice here.

    • @scottswail3176
      @scottswail3176 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That may be less about the paint and more to do with other moisture issues in your woodwork. Look to see where moisture is coming in and seal it (caulk or other). Is it coming from inside the house (e.g., attid?). Those issues (rotten wood and chipping paint) typically are because of moisture behind the coat. Moisture is getting in from somewhere, and often through the back or through cracks (e.g., joints). A thought.

      @HygroHybrid หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stevenshook3348 it is, but I'm sure he's just trying to quote a general price to appeal to everyone is retail/contractor. I'm a contractor so I pay half of whatever the advertised price is.
      Consumers don't know this, but that's why it pays to just hire a contractor if you need a house painted. You should be getting better products and prices. Now ,if Juan is painting a house for $2k don't expect good products/work to be done. Quick flip sure, but not on my house.

    Used Behr twice because my wife wouldn't listen to me. Never again. It takes more behr paint and more coats to do what Benjamin More does with less pain and coats. Also behr color fades over time. Save time, money and work less use Benjamin More not behr.

    • @diypainting
      @diypainting  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry you had a bad experience with it. I've had nothing but great experiences with Behr. It's priced right and their products are amazing.
      If a paint took more than two coats, I'd question if you used their lowest grade paint and ask what color were you painting with? I've found Behr Ultra on up through Marquee and Dynasty to cover every color in 2 coats. Behr is also proven to be one of the best against fade and scuffing.

    Behr paint sucks. You get what you pay for. Stay away from prime and paint especially. Benjamin Moore is the best paint and best colors. You cannot pick a BM color and gave it mixed at Home Depot as Behr and get the same color. The undertones are different. For young families Sherwin W is ok. BM is the best hands down. Mine lasted 13 years and I only painted to change colors. Revere Pewter is a great neutral and is often chosen by designers.
