L4D has such an amazing soundtrack that you wouldn't expect from a zombie first person shooter, you really get the sense of sadness and despair of a world that is pretty much already over with 4 "carriers" just trying to survive.

Pretty much why I could not and never will get into L4D2. The tones are completely different between the two games. Starts with the very fact L4D doesnt have a single day time map. 0:22 - The main menu theme.
3:53 - Plays when the Tank (boss enemy that randomly spawns) starts chasing you.
6:40 - Plays when a Tank spawns in the final run to the rescue vehicle.
9:20 - Plays when at least one survivor makes it to the rescue vehicle and the credits (game stats) roll.
14:16 - Plays when at least one survivor makes it to the saferoom (the transition between chapters in a campaign).
In game, these soundtracks don't transition abruptly like in the video.
15:41 - Plays when the Witch (another boss enemy that randomly spawns) spawns but is currently just crying in place, minding her own business.
16:16 - Plays when she chases a survivor that startles her by getting too close, shining the flashlight on her or hurting her.
17:57 - Plays when the witch is on fire, she will chase the survivor that set her on fire regardless of who startled her.

You nailed it on the monsters within saying that it “Hinted a bit of hope but it’s buried under uncertainty”

    • @inspector_beyond
      @inspector_beyond 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +90

It's also because each survivor in L4D series is also infected and they spread the desease, yet they are immune to becoming a "zombie" themselves (I put quotation marks on the zombie because they are not a typical living dead zombies we get used to). Which is why when the survivors got rescued by, for example, a helicopter pilot, surivors have to shoot him and crash land somewhere.
It would count as spoiler, but sadly this fact is only known through the tie-in comics and not from the game itself.

9:40 The reason the track becomes "electro rock" as you described is because this particular music plays when you reach an ending safe house and statistics flash up on screen. The "digital" twist to the music is designed to engage the analytical part of your brain in order to make you pay attention to the mathematical feedback the game is giving you so you know what you did well or what you struggled with, allowing you to take this information into account as you play the next round. The same thing happens at 14:16.

@@wesleyward5901 You do realize that there is an analytical part of the brain right? It's called the left brain. The thing of engaging the left side of the brain is that you focus on the analytical parts, accompanied by the "electro rock" type of music and you start focusing more on the information the game gives you.
That's at least what it does to me, music is a big part of how you perceive something and how you feel.

    • @IAmFromTheYear
      @IAmFromTheYear 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

@@HoughStone Is it really that difficult to understand? The music at the moments I highlighted has a significant change. It goes from a classic horror soundtrack (strings, piano & choir) to an electronic soundtrack using synthesizers. If you listen carefully you can hear morse code style beeping in the background similar to the digital beeping that accompanies text when it is being auto typed/scrolled on screen (like in text based RPGs).
All of this is being done as I said to engage the analytical part of your brain. The horror soundtrack is designed to evoke the EMOTIONAL part of your brain as it creates fear and tension as you play the game. However, when you reach a safehouse and it is time to evaluate your performance during the round by looking at your statistics, the game doesn't need you to be EMOTIONAL, it needs you to be ANALYTICAL. It needs you to stop FEELING and start THINKING. That's why the soundtrack takes a digital twist. When the average human hears digital synth noises it evokes a more objective and logical mindset as we generally connote these noises with technology, data, processing and analysis.
I really don't see how this is so difficult to understand. This is basic music theory.

quick edit bc im stupid, its extremely reminiscent of any folklore style description of sirens. it feels familiar because it harkens to the childlike memory of having a mother sing you to sleep, unintelligible words but a melody you can feel drawn into before you even walk. you just dont know its a modern day siren until its too late and you realize it wasnt a person calling you forward
imo its meant to explain the feel of the start of the game/ starts with an unknowable but familiar string of notes to a voice, building the feeling of unease, while slowly warping slightly and becoming more and more filtered through a radio, turning the unease to dread when you realize the somewhat familiar voice you heard so clear seeming to maybe be friendly, becomes not a person but the echo of one, leaving you feeling much more alone than you expected, after looking for hope in the voice, dragging you deeper into the unknown

0:23 the L4D main menu reminds me of that one guy that commented on this theme capturing the story about a mother singing this to her baby in a stroller, She was at the evacuation center as one of the guards took a notice upon hearing her humming, Saying how much her humming calms her baby before making it going to sleep. but soon after realizing that the mother is infected, the guards had no other options but telling her to leave. However the mother requested the guard to give her a radio before she go, locking herself in a nearby building in order to make sure nothing happens to them. Knowing she would soon be turned into one of them, the mother uses the radio. Giving her one last time to sing for her baby. As the guard activates the radio, with the baby slowly fall asleep... The mother then was already turned after giving her last lullaby. Which can be heard after the radio was cut off near the end of the song

    To give context:
The first is the main theme, which plays on the main menu. A gentle way to set the mood for the rest of the game.
The second is the theme of the strongest infected in the game. The Tank demands a lot of attention when it arrives, and so instead of getting a brief sting in the ambience like most infected, it gets its own grandiose theme as long as it bears down on you like a roided gorilla.
The Monsters Within is the music that plays at the end of a mission. The subtle section plays during the credits after a whole campaign, and that last sting is what plays after the individual missions in that campaign.
And finally… Witch! is exactly what you said it was. It’s a song meant to get you on edge. Witches are the only other infected that would be considered a boss and for good reason. That first part with the atmospheric vibe plays when you’re near one, usually accompanied by its distressed crying. If you get too close, or antagonize it in any way, it runs after the one who disturbed it and mauls them until it or its victim is dead, which is what that second section is played during. The third section plays only when you are the one being mauled by it.
Edit: I was wrong about the third part of the witch’s theme. It plays when she’s been set ablaze, though I’m unsure why.

I could be wrong but I thought no music plays when you are near a witch because you are supposed to make no noise or basically be 'invisible' to the witch because you have to turn your flashlight off. Surely playing that music would be contradictory to what is happening in-game. It feels more like the first part is when you set her off. I'm probably wrong, its just how I see it.

L4D was more serious, while L4D2 was the one that was more for joking around and lighter. You only got to see one part of the map that you got to see the sun out of L4D which I thought was a pretty cool idea, which was the end of Blood Harvest when the Military runs over the fence, showing there was actual hope(of course not if you've read the comics). If you listen to a lot of L4D2 soundtracks, they got a bit more of an upbeat sounding to them, hell, you even got to fight at a concert playing tape recorded songs to go with it! I don't think words will ever describe the emotions that hearing the first Left 4 Dead menu's theme makes me feel, but I know it will always encapsulate the emotion of the word "Mother" to me. When I was little my mom got me the game, and MAN, it will forever hold such amazing memories for me, no matter how blurry. (Ignoring the phobias it gave me from a young age LOL)
I think this game encapsulates a lot for a lot of people who either grew up on it, or otherwise played it a lot years ago. I know it will for me, as I think it represents a childhood innocence, -- Knowing so little about the darkness of the "adult" (outside of your sight and mind) world that parents often shelter and block from their children. Simplistic wants and needs for happiness, when things were taken care of for you that were too hard to handle on your own. When you just.. -lived-. Minecraft (Another game with an amazing soundtrack!) similarly represents things like this to me. However, Left 4 Dead and its sequel hold a deeper place in my heart due to how I was introduced to it by my mother and we would even play it together. It's like one of the few games that will keep that innocent image of my mother alive, where she was only my shelter, my guardian, and my friend.
The characters are like the family I never had, making it easy to project onto their interpersonal dynamics between one another, (I.E, Zoey and Bill being father and daughter. Francis and Louis being those two friends that give each other shit but have each others back.). Obviously, mentioning the first games characters as I have more of a connection to them, but similar sentiments could be applied for the second games characters.
As someone with a severe panic disorder, it makes playing the game pretty tough nowadays, though when I get the chance when my brain can handle it, I adore launching it from time to time to just enjoy the childhood memories.
Before my disorder developed properly as an adolescent, I had much more mental energy to play the game until the nightmares and panic attacks became too much. I would play this game, and later the second game, daily, and have such a blast playing. But the universe of this game, the effort that the devs put into making the atmosphere just right, the voice actors, the music, the characterizations of the characters.. Absolutely would and WILL continue to always bring me back to this masterpiece and its music, and will 100% continue to influence my writing until I die.

Wow! absolute wow! I've been playing this game for years but never heard these soundtracks the way you did. This is the first time I'm listening to your channel, and I don't think it will be the last. I'm learning a lot from you in this video, thanks and stay awesome.

17:10 About that - The witch is a type of zombie in the game that often can be completely avoided. The first part of the sound plays as an ambient as soon as you're in her radius. She sits on the ground and cries. As you disturb her she becomes scared and if you disturb her long enough she stands up going after you which is where the music then starts picking up!

3:12 I wasn't expecting you to whip out your violin and actually play a bit of the song, it sounds hauntingly beautiful! I can only imagine what a full cover of some of these darker tone songs would be like??

One thing that I always thought was really cool was that in Left 4 Dead 2, the main themes instrument's would change depending on which menu background was playing! Like you would have some creepy carnival music for the Dark Carnival level or some really unsettling back country music for the Swamp Fever level. It was a great detail!

This guy is amazing for how he can feel out the music's purpose. It's spot on! I never really realized or appreciated how meaningful and inpactful the music in all the Left 4 Dead games were. Maybe because I've been in the moment just trying to survive. This shit literally made me cry

This was so much fun to watch. I always knew that the L4D soundtrack was on another level but hearing somebody who knows what they're talking about actually articulate what's so special about it is super rad. Thanks for this!

Especially happy you reacted to this game! Zombie Games like Left for 4 Dead always have this sort of feel that's indescribable when it comes to the music they use and create. I think the Left For Dead series and Project Zomboid (A game I highly recommend you check out, as well as the many music songs that come with it!) are both some of the best examples when it comes to encapsulating the vibe of most zombie games. Excited for your next reaction Lionmight! Oh, and congratulations on the rebrand as well! :)

I always enjoyed a certain theory regarding the "Left 4 Dead" specifc song. Near the end you hear the melody hummed but it sounds like its over the radio. Someone theorized it could be a mother singing a lullaby to her baby through a radio as she slowly starts to turn.
Always loved the Left 4 Dead games and their amazing soundtracks. I really hope you listen to more, especially the Left 4 Dead 2 soundtrack, they went with a different vibe that still suites an outbreak. Really hope to see a part 2 soon

I've got one question. Did you play any Left 4 Dead. 18:44 If you haven't played any Left 4 Dead or see what the Witch is. Brother you absolutely nailed it. You hit that analysis of the Witch in the game PERFECTLY.

12:30 this is so on point and it's amazing how you look like you knew what really happened. Fyi this soundtrack is played after the survivors were rescued on a chopper when you completed a certain campaign. When you mentioned "unsureness" you are also right since the survivors' journey didn't really stop after being rescued. Spoiler alert for those who haven't played the game the chopper crashed, they survived the crash then the game continues on a new campaign.
