Skin on Our Teeth plays when the rescue has came after a holdout or gascans. And usually, every ounce of teamwork drops HEAVILY when this plays, because it gives such a feeling that you NEED to rush. Which exactly what makes players think when a rescue arrives on a musical basis. This game's music ties so much with the player's psychotic response, and it's genius, considering Valve developes such great and memorable games.

I like how Skin on Our Teeth feels like the Tank theme, but also has a sense of urgency and includes a few hints of the saferoom theme. It really feels like you're running to safety.
Because it's played when the rescue arrives. The urgency comes to escaping and getting to the rescue vehicle as fast as you can because that is when the game throws everything it has at you to prevent you from escaping. That's why I also find the title fitting, because you're escaping/escaped through the "skin of your teeth" with or without your companions
@@FireRevenant31 To quote Nick, "we made that by the skin of our teeth." It may also have the tank theme in it because, at that time, tanks are trying to kill you.
@@yazidefirenze Exactly! And I believe he says those lines when someone didn't make it. It's been a while so I can't really remember what triggers him to say it so I could also be incorrect in this
To provide some context for anyone unfamiliar with the game: "Skin On Our Teeth" plays at the end of a campaign, when the rescue vehicle has arrived, and the survivors must rush to reach it and escape. Meanwhile, the infected hordes endlessly attack. "No Mercy", "Death Toll", and "Blood Harvest" play at the beginning of each respective campaign. They're essentially the intro themes. No Mercy is located in the middle of Philadelphia, and is a very large, urban city. It is also the first campaign in the story. Death Toll starts in the rural and industrial outskirts of a city, and gradually progresses towards said city. Blood Harvest is in Allegheny National Forest and mainly features an isolated forest environment. "Left For Death" plays when all the survivors die during a campaign (First part), or when one player dies (the second part).

Peak Valve music, peak valve games. Theres very small amount of music in games that really gives me the shivers of excitment between old MW3 and now Helldivers, but L4D and L4D2 will ALWAYS send that nostalgia and feeling when the drop comes in, you open the safe door, and the music changes, start to be intense, tells you that "you now are not alone, something is after you". Also the reason for the cut off for some songs is that they're incorporated into a dynamic music system, where the music you hear for No Mercy loops a track while you're in the beginning safe zone before moving forward. I love the low drone in the No Mercy and Blood Harvest tracks. Contextually, it's the beginning of the mission and you get your pick of the gear. I think the drone sounds like a generator or an engine struggling away to keep the lights on.
Death Toll, No Mercy, and Blood Harvest are all music that plays at the start of the campaigns that share the same name as the piece respectively (No Mercy plays at the start of No Mercy, etc.), and similarly in Left 4 Dead 2, all campaigns have a different intro music that plays upon loading in, but they all devolve into the same music towards the end, around a minute into the piece iirc. It's a wonderful way to tie all of the campaigns together, as well as give them all distinct, but still tonally consistent personalities.

I'm not sure if you've checked it out yet, But you should check out Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical. The game is a musical where you can choose what the main character sings and the shift of instruments in the song. The Ritual is a good example in the biggest possible way. There's 3 paths, Blue, Red, and Green. Each with unique vocals and instrumental tones.
There's also custom-made campaigns that have original music that fits into the base game really well! Suicide Blitz 2 and Cold Front are the best ones I know. They're obviously not professional made, but you might still like them :)
It's been probably explained already, but No Mercy, Blood Harvest, and others, are this kind of "sister compositions" with some variants, because they're the theme that plays at the very beggining of the homonymous "campaign", meaning a series of levels that make an entire chronology of events. So No Mercy plays at the beggining of the campaign "No Mercy", and so on. I always liked to think that they end the way the do, without the last note, to leave the composition without conclusion, in a sort of "this is not the end" kind of way. You know, because this is the very start, so it remains open for whatever comes next. It's really cool
*TIP:* If you do wind up listening to the L4D2 soundtrack, there will be tracks that go by the same name as their L4D1 counterparts but have been HEAVILY reworked to fit the second game's tone, while still being very familiar. *Skin on Our Teeth, The Monsters Within, Left 4 Death,* and the *Main Theme* are the ones that you've listened to so far that have direct counterparts in the sequel. (There are actually 5 versions of the main theme in the sequel that are randomly cycled through, so I doubt you'd listen to all of them - I'd highly recommend the "Hard Rain" main theme out of the 5) I'd love to see you hear familiar game music that's been redesigned to carry a _very_ different atmosphere than for what you'd originally heard. There's also a specific _song_ called "Save Me Some Sugar" that was composed by the developers specifically for the game, though you wouldn't expect that from hearing it. Would be interesting to see your reaction to either that, or another similar song for the game named "Midnight Ride."
im not a music nerd but i can appreciate a good musical score and I am obsessed with Left 4 Dead. Watched both the videos you made on the first game and I have to say, you help me appreciate the music even more by explaining these details!
In left 4 death, its a popular theory that a mother was separated from her child because of the infection. she was being taken away, and shes singing a final lullaby to her child through a walkie talkie, which ties in the static voice you hear. hearing you say that it sounds like the piano is being played by a child is chilling.. the fact you were able to pick that up shows that maybe it was purposefully designed by its composer and is a testimant to the details in this games music ALONE ❤ L4D4LIFE
L4d2 has its own version of skin on our teeth, and left for death you should give them a listen sometime Also l4d2 has a track called “south of human” and which plays at the start of the first campaign “dead center”
Left 4 Dead 2 has a remix of Skin Of Our Teeth that I also recommend. It completely changes the vibe of the track and embodies the new mood put forth by L4D2. Both however are really good regardless, just different vibes. Good vid as always.
Left 4 death soundtrack truly does feel like a death, where things are going then the DUN DUN signifying the kill, then angelic music plays as your soul leaves your body slowly, the beeps in the background that could signify your life or heartbeat fading away. the music makes you feel sad in a way as when you hear that, you feel like you failed your team has to move on and leave you for dead.
4:30 once again. Amazig on the feel of yhe music. That's the begining of the "Death Toll" level once you are waiting to leave the safe room for battle to get to the next safe room. Trully amazing!
Honestly, something you should react to next time you get to left 4 dead is just the special infected spawn motifs, because every kind of zombie plays a little tune specifically tailored to them whenever one spawns somewhere
I know this will get buried, but I'd love for you to listen to some of the soundtrack from the Black Mirror games by Zdeněk Houb. The games aren't super well known but the soundtrack is truly superb, particularly in Black Mirror 2 in Willow Creek.
Probably won’t see this, but you’re not wrong about the “Kaiju chasing you” bit you were talking about Because at the time you brought it up, the song was actually using the Tank theme motif. And in the instance of this song playing, there IS a tank chasing you until you escape
glad I watched this video! I now have a newfound appreciation for not just the music but for the musical techniques being implemented so the music can have a certain feel!
you are right, the last two songs end abruptly. but i wont explain the gameplay reasons they are both intro songs, and are followed by looping songs that go similar but are more hush. themes for planning your next move
look up "no mercy for you (no mercy saferoom theme)" to hear how the no mercy one continues the others are called death toll collector, dead air time, blood harvestor, and 'pray for death' for the left 4 dead 2. very valve style to add an extra fitting word
Sound track so good in Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2 you forget that there is even music playing, on top of it you're already so immersed in the game.🔥🔥
Ace Attorney OST could be an amazing idea. The OST is magnificent that i just want to see your reaction to every song. Your musical knowledge is very much apreciated!
Left 4 Dead has campaigns, and they have names: No mercy, Crash Course(pls check it out next time), Death toll, Dead Air, Blood Harvest, The Sacrifice. All of them has Main Theme, Rabies and safe room theme. Those themes presenting to the player nature of the each campaign with fear and epic. P.s. I hope you will check out L4D2 OST, some of the songs like Skin on our teeth or Monsters Within is a bit different. Thank you for your videos ❤ P.p.s Also all campaigns have their own posters with its own thematic (like dead air is about airport with tons of falling planes and zombies, or blood harvest is about little town with a farm full of zombies or something, etc.) and if you look on the poster and listen to music, all pieces starts building up in one terrifying, epic picture.
Wow, they knew how to make the game suspenseful not only through the maps and events, but also through the music, since even this plays an important role when it comes to surviving, I love how you emphasize that with your explanations
5:10 details to understand this music which is one of my favorite songs in Left 4 Dead.. the reason why is that you’re hearing both versions in one video let me explain, the beginning part at 5:15 happens when (if you play by yourself or with your friends) all died together and the second part of the song at 5:28 happens only if you or anyone else dies by themselves (which only plays if you’re playing local cooperative or online mode).. this is also the same case with Left 4 Dead 2 death song
The tracks Death Toll, No Mercy and Blood Harvest play at the start of their campaigns which share their name with their respective track, and No Mercy is the first campaign and the start of this beautifully rendered apocalypse
Hey bro, love your videos and your reactions make me smile when the music is familiar and you point out things that i didn't notice before. I recommend Payday 2's music, especially Razormind. Absolute Banger. Keep up the Good work! :)
Funny how you mention No Mercy and Blood Harvest are like ‘sister songs’ because in the original Left 4 Dead 1’s game timeline, No Mercy is the first campaign, taking place in an urban city where the end goal is to reach a hospital, while Blood Harvest is the last campaign which takes place more in the forested rural area where the survivors end up at a farm turned into a military outpost. Love the connections you make here!
Skin in our teeth is basically when the rescue has arrived and believe me this remade tone in left 4 dead 2 in the bridge chapter in the Parish Campaign is enough to leave you dead (I tried to play this level and I actually failed because a smoker got me) because you literally have to like “screw your teammates, man” if you feel like rescue is like 10 seconds from leaving
It's interesting how the whole game has very similar notes, but they are worked in different ways according to the situation of the game, whether it's getting out of the safe room, attention, danger, rescue, even in the part where we manage to reach the safe room (which shows that it's not over yet, that there will be more ahead) and when we finish the campaign (which we manage to get through everything)
@@tonythewerehog5410 It's also added for the first game(?) Left 4 Dead 1 is the 1st game, and features primarily the original survivors, But a DLC was also added for not just L4d2, for L4d as well, and that's The Sacrifice.
I dunno how one man can make me actually think about the subtext of music in a zombie shooter series with a limited storyline, but damn you made me actually THINK about this.
I love how you somehow guess the themes perfectly, even though I’m pretty sure you’ve never played. Such as knowing the Death Toll theme is a suspended tone since you start in a “saferoom.”
Those songs you heard are the intro to the Campaigns, the stories our four protagonists go through to progress through the game. Each campaign has an intro and then, if you take too long to advance or exit the safe house, it has a track that loops using the same instruments of the intro until you leave the safe house. The order of the campaigns is the following. No mercy - Crash Course - Death Toll - Dead Air - Blood Harvest - The Sacrifice (L4D2 DLC if I'm not wrong, so it follows that game instruments at the end, instead of the L4D ones). The order of the looped track is the same name followed by "Prayed for death" or a slight change in the game, for example "Blood harvester" for Blood Harvest. And yes, all the intro songs follow the same leitmotifs.
i do not know if you have heard of this game or not but its called Lies of P, there is a certain OST that i listen to again and again because of how beautiful it is. Its called "Arch Abbey Upper Part" the title may not look like it but the song is so beautiful in my opinion you should have a listen lionmight its so good and Left 4 Dead is a great game since i have played it beforee Looking forward to more videoss!
I know the video is three weeks old by now but I don't think anyone mentioned it. That typical Left 4 Dead melody you mention and hear in multiple tracks is also a huge part of the Tanks theme, which I believe you have listened to. Conveniently, almost any time these other tracks are played in game, especially Skin on Our Teeth, a Tank is currently in play or is spawned and is attempting to keep survivors from reaching the evacuation vehicle at the end of the chapter, where Skin on Our Teeth is usually played. The Tank theme will obviously not be playing when one of these other tracks are being played, instead this will be. I most commonly recall hearing Skin on Our Teeth at the ending of Blood Harvest which is the last chapter in the first Left 4 Dead game (before The Sacrifice was made available for both L4D1 and L4D2) So you are right about the whole giving the track a larger than life feel, like you're being chased feeling. Because yeah, you normally are being chased by a Tank that has been spawned.

There's also a specific _song_ called "Save Me Some Sugar" that was composed by the developers specifically for the game, though you wouldn't expect that from hearing it. Would be interesting to see your reaction to either that, or another similar song for the game named "Midnight Ride."
They're already filmed since 2 months ago. Just haven't uploaded.
@@LionmightOfficial Welp. Hope ya enjoyed what ye heard!
I'd love to see his reaction to hear the horde chase theme.
im not a music nerd but i can appreciate a good musical score and I am obsessed with Left 4 Dead. Watched both the videos you made on the first game and I have to say, you help me appreciate the music even more by explaining these details!
In left 4 death, its a popular theory that a mother was separated from her child because of the infection. she was being taken away, and shes singing a final lullaby to her child through a walkie talkie, which ties in the static voice you hear. hearing you say that it sounds like the piano is being played by a child is chilling.. the fact you were able to pick that up shows that maybe it was purposefully designed by its composer and is a testimant to the details in this games music ALONE ❤ L4D4LIFE
Your critics are so on point, i love it!❤
MAN U R AMAZING I AM A BIG FAN OF LEFT 4 DEAD , U MADE MY DAY MAN .
The game also has thematic music for its threats, it represents the way they attack you, theese themes are called special infected themes
0:40 The chopper's here lets go!!
hoping to see the Smoker's "Tongue Tied/Asphyxiation" next ngl
L4d2 has its own version of skin on our teeth, and left for death you should give them a listen sometime
Also l4d2 has a track called “south of human” and which plays at the start of the first campaign “dead center”
2:05 Love this part!
@@Chop7264 SAMEE THO IT'S GOODD (or best)
Skin in our teeth + Monster's Within = Pure Satisfaction
Loved the video! and also, you need to hear the Dead Air theme from L4D, its the best campaign theme I ever heard.
Left 4 Dead 2 has a remix of Skin Of Our Teeth that I also recommend. It completely changes the vibe of the track and embodies the new mood put forth by L4D2.
Both however are really good regardless, just different vibes.
Good vid as always.
YES. this is what i wanted from you! i recently started playing l4d and l4d2. im happy you made this video.
Left 4 Death is my favorite song in L4D1, really feels like a sense of loss when you get killed snd watch your teammates struggle onwards without you.
I've been waiting for more reactions from you on L4D, thanks🙏
More to come!

Great, I want to see more content, Thanks!
I now wanna see him play L4D1, and have him react to the music of stuff as it goes down so he can see and comment on the application of the music
I just saw that you uploaded this and cant believe that i missed it. The soundtrack from these games are incredible
Probably won’t see this, but you’re not wrong about the “Kaiju chasing you” bit you were talking about
Because at the time you brought it up, the song was actually using the Tank theme motif. And in the instance of this song playing, there IS a tank chasing you until you escape
I want to see a Left 4 Dead prequel called Right 2 Live
glad I watched this video! I now have a newfound appreciation for not just the music but for the musical techniques being implemented so the music can have a certain feel!
Left 4 Dead is considered my best childhood and the OST’s are still stuck in my head to this day. Let you know that the Valve Devs COOKED
youre honestly one of the best reviewers
11:55 It just so happens that the name of the map is No Mercy
you are right, the last two songs end abruptly. but i wont explain the gameplay reasons
they are both intro songs, and are followed by looping songs that go similar but are more hush. themes for planning your next move
look up "no mercy for you (no mercy saferoom theme)" to hear how the no mercy one continues
the others are called death toll collector, dead air time, blood harvestor, and 'pray for death' for the left 4 dead 2. very valve style to add an extra fitting word
Sound track so good in Left 4 Dead 1 and Left 4 Dead 2 you forget that there is even music playing, on top of it you're already so immersed in the game.🔥🔥
YES HE DID IT, GOOD VIDEO, THE BEST
You'd love Warframe's music. We All Lift Together is amazing, Sleeping in the Cold Below is such a delightful shanty, and Smiles from Juran is so sad.
Ace Attorney OST could be an amazing idea. The OST is magnificent that i just want to see your reaction to every song.
Your musical knowledge is very much apreciated!
I hope you noticed at 6:01 the synthesizer sounding instrument slowing down into a flatline
Thank you for your videos ❤
P.p.s Also all campaigns have their own posters with its own thematic (like dead air is about airport with tons of falling planes and zombies, or blood harvest is about little town with a farm full of zombies or something, etc.) and if you look on the poster and listen to music, all pieces starts building up in one terrifying, epic picture.
Wow, they knew how to make the game suspenseful not only through the maps and events, but also through the music, since even this plays an important role when it comes to surviving, I love how you emphasize that with your explanations
Oh man you should do Dead Air too, your analysis would be amazing!
What I love about skin on our teeth is that the Tank’s theme is hidden in there and pushes forward that feeling that you should hurry the f*ck up
Can you do the left 4 dead 2 skin on are teeth?
Soon
5:10 details to understand this music which is one of my favorite songs in Left 4 Dead.. the reason why is that you’re hearing both versions in one video let me explain, the beginning part at 5:15 happens when (if you play by yourself or with your friends) all died together and the second part of the song at 5:28 happens only if you or anyone else dies by themselves (which only plays if you’re playing local cooperative or online mode).. this is also the same case with Left 4 Dead 2 death song
So glad you get to experience the artwork of Value's greatest and masterwork music themes.
I love his reactions and insights to this games music, hoping he is happy with doing more!
No matter how many times I play this game, the music slap so hard that none others can . Go down in history .
The tracks Death Toll, No Mercy and Blood Harvest play at the start of their campaigns which share their name with their respective track, and No Mercy is the first campaign and the start of this beautifully rendered apocalypse
A reaction to hl1 or hl2s ost reaction from you would be great. Its a great mix of fast paced tracks and creepy ambience.
ive been watching you since last summer, love ur content keep going.
The messiah is back!
The fact that the music fits so much a music expert can just imagine whats going on.
Blood Harvest is the final level of the game, hence why the theme uses elements from the others.
@@tonythewerehog5410 Is it not "The Sacrifice"?
@@Whyarerocksrocks The Sacrifice was for L4D2. Not L4D1.
@@tonythewerehog5410 It's also added for the first game(?)
Left 4 Dead 1 is the 1st game, and features primarily the original survivors, But a DLC was also added for not just L4d2, for L4d as well, and that's The Sacrifice.
I dunno how one man can make me actually think about the subtext of music in a zombie shooter series with a limited storyline, but damn you made me actually THINK about this.
I love how you somehow guess the themes perfectly, even though I’m pretty sure you’ve never played. Such as knowing the Death Toll theme is a suspended tone since you start in a “saferoom.”
as a L4D fan when the game came out to this day brings me chills such a good game and way ahead of its time i hope valve comes back on this
The thing i love about left4dead is that the zombies dont eat you but instead beat you to death
Well that's because they aren't zombies; they are still humans, just Infected Individuals, they aren't dead rotting corpses with desire for flesh
@@RandomDudeOfTheInternet Yes i know, And i love it
@@MANONAHILL but you called them zombies
@@mowards Infected, You get it
Those songs you heard are the intro to the Campaigns, the stories our four protagonists go through to progress through the game.
Its called "Arch Abbey Upper Part" the title may not look like it but the song is so beautiful in my opinion
you should have a listen lionmight its so good
and Left 4 Dead is a great game since i have played it beforee
Looking forward to more videoss!
1:09-1:30 it's the 'tanks' main theme, he's the strongest and largest enemy in the game so he was pin point on his statement
Left 4 Dead is only scary when u play single player without bots but in versus mod it is just fun
I most commonly recall hearing Skin on Our Teeth at the ending of Blood Harvest which is the last chapter in the first Left 4 Dead game (before The Sacrifice was made available for both L4D1 and L4D2)
So you are right about the whole giving the track a larger than life feel, like you're being chased feeling. Because yeah, you normally are being chased by a Tank that has been spawned.
Tank was heavily featured in episode 1. This video is episode 2 already.
l4d2 skin on our teeth is like completely different its awesome
Thees Left 4 Dead videos are so nice, I hope one day you can take a listen to the 2nd game’s additional sountracks
