It makes the game so cinematic.. I remember playing with friends years ago in the Passing map and I found a machine gun and just decided to trudge on ahead from the power going to my head and then I literally flinched and stopped when I heard, the Smoker sound, before I could even frantically look around the Smoker sitting on top of some railings got me and I was turned into a human pinata while my friends were so far away..... A sad tale of what should've been cooperation

The sound design of Left 4 Dead games is one of the best in games history. Every small musical cue carries a piece of information of what's happeing around players.
The very first soundtrack with long name that is indeed a compilation of "bad things" happening to your characters in the game (in order of them playing). This is music for those times when the Special infected zombies (mutated ones that are a cut more dangerous than common zombies) are attacking the Survivors.
Contusion (1:04) - a short chord that plays when the Charger rammed the survivor and still barreling through everything until he stops and starts beating his victim.
Exenteration (1:06) - the most horryfing special infected music, when the Hunter (stealthy and agile, but extremely deadly) zombie successfully pounced on Survivor, knocking them on the ground and starts literally ripping their innards away. This attack deals the highest amount of damage and WILL kill Survivor very quickly unless interrupted.
Mortification (1:19) - Back to our Charger infected. This one plays when Charger finally stops with grabbed Survivor and starts bashing them against the ground mercilessly. The low pitched sounds are perfectly synced with him slamming the victim with his huge mutated arm.
Asphyxiation (1:33) - so called Smoker infected has wrapped the Survivor with his unnaturaly long mutated tongue and now is trying to suffocate them. Music perfectly reflects that "gapsing for air" feeling. By the way, there is also an additional musical cue for Survivor being dragged to Smoker called Tongue Tied. Sets up the mood for what is about to happene next.
Vassalation (1:55) - Jockey special infected has jumped on top of Survivor, effectively "riding" them, while clawing their eyes out and trying to lead his victim away from other Survivors right into other infected or make them fall to their death.
Enzymicide (2:21) - Spitter zombie attacks survivor by spitting extremely dangerous acid that spreads out on the ground, making it deadly to stand upon. Music plays when Survivor is standing in that puddle and taking damage. And she too has ANOTHER soundtrack for her called Pileobile that plays for Survivor who stands dangerously cloze to the acid puddle.
Germs - there's actually more than two variations of that music cue. They are played by the game when the Horde of zombies are approaching the Survivors. A short audio cue for the coming storm. The deeper the sound - the bigger the horde.
Bacterias - audio cues to warn Survivors that a certain Special Infected is lurking nearby. It plays different variation for it's own Special infected. And even those small strings of notes can relay the character of those infected. Amazing.
I am sorry if this comment looks so big, but I just wanted to express my fascination how Left 4 Dead can improve the game experience with those little music pieces.

The germs are actually just random, I believe. I'm not seeing anything in the soundscripts that triggers specific ones based on horde size; There's just MobSignal1 and MobSignal2, with the specific track within them being randomly picked each time.
Germs can also play when leaving a checkpoint.

This is an incredibly nifty and informative comment. I'm a lifelong musician and huge L4D/2 fan, but I don't have excellent auditory integration so I've always kept the game music pretty low so I could hear in-universe noises better. I always knew the soundtrack was iconic, but I had no idea it was THIS granularly specific and communicative! I'm definitely going to turn my music volume back up and make an effort to internalize and use these cues. Amazing, over 1k hours in 2 and yet I still learn new things all the time. I'm so glad these games have stayed so active and get so much reverence and coverage and analysis.

Your feelings on the Parish are SPOT ON! That is the final (official) level in the franchise, where the survivors have made it to New Orleans, which was supposed to be a safe zone from the infection, only for you to arrive late and bear witness to what has happened to a city, once full of life and music.

    • @MrBiggyfoot69

Not only that, but if you listen closely to some of the things they say during the Chapters, it just gets more grim and more.. scary for them. Despite it being so sunny, so bright, it gives me, "doomsday" vibes. You know that bright light you see before you see the mushroom cloud? Or an undead marching band. That's what it gives me. "Jesus, these were people! They were shooting people!" Before starting the alarm. "What was this guy doing?" In the unfinished house, upstairs before you drop down the hole on your right, there's a wall with writing. If you go up to the left side of the bed, you'll see two stick men. One normal and the other angry with tick marks below. "That one was close." "STOP BOMBING US!" We all know that what that's about. And hearing those bombs in the background would honestly scare me if I wasn't so used to hearing it. Thinking about it a little more gives me chills. "We ARE NOT infected!" It gives me different dialog feels every time, as if this is serious. Same goes with my favorite line, "Right before we head to guys who've been dropping bombs on us, anyone wanna talk about a Plan B?" And this is coming from the same man who doesn't seem to care about the team, who wanted to go solo in the first round of the game, the same man who's been yelling at Coach throughout the chapters, telling him NONE of what's going on is *right.* Everyone seems to brush it off or maybe make small remarks about it, but Nick is the only one who sees a problem with it and that this is getting serious. He can see what Ceda is doing, and it's like the other three have completely ignored the writings on the walls and Nick is starting to finally believe and piece things together and he's literally trying to warn them because they're just looking the other way and not wanting to look too deep and find out that if they stay, it won't be as a better option for them if they were with the military. They don't want to end up like them, but they just CLING that it isn't another bad ending. Another way to PARISH. Or maybe it's the only way. Maybe that's why it's called the Parish, you die in New Orleans, or you go dying with the military. Nick and the last Map of L4D2 will always be my favorite, because it's so unique, and it's so serious in GOOD ways with the PERFECT background.

For musical context (not about the lore or anything) the artist who played a lot of the "southern delta" sounding guitar pieces did the Dark Carnival theme which is played on a Musical Saw! A Saw cutting tool but played musically to produce that high pitched wailing sound! His Hard Rain piece was also done using a handcrafted "resophonic Geetar" with a metal slide! His name is Reggie Miles and he is quite the artist!

If you're wondering about the reeeeally long title of the first track, they're basically the themes of the Special Infected that are played when you're pinned or caught by them.
Asphyxiation refers to the Smoker strangling you to death with its tentacle-like tongue/organ (hence why the song leading up to is called 'Tonguetied').
Enzymicide refers to the Spitter dealing damage to you via the acid pool it spits at you.
Exenteration refers to the Hunter pinning you down before pulling and shredding your guts to pieces.
Contusion is them theme that plays when the Charger grabs a survivor and rides off with them, while Mortification refers to the Charger grabbing you with its giant hand before pounding you into the ground.
Vassalation refers to the Jockey leaping onto your head and driving you away from survivors, essentially taking control away from your movement as you try to fight back.
There's a lot more information about the song titles in the Left 4 Dead 1/2 wiki, recommend giving it a read! Hope this helps!

It almost seems like the mind of the characters or simply a passer-by person cannot comprehend what is going on around them, yet slowly but surely accepts the circumstances, signified by the violin finally mixing with the leitmotif, but having its own sting at the end is like a cry for help, a lingering and deminishing hope for a better tomorrow.

If I remember correctly, the theme that plays at 13:45 (the parish) plays in the main menu showing central New Orleans, with all of the life (the living people and colour) sucked out of it. The devoid of life feeling is reflected by having the saturation almost completely taken out of the environment (which is arguably one of New Orleans’ most prominent features), and the people that once were, are now replaced by the afflicted aimlessly wondering the streets during the background of the main menu.

Contusion is where the charger hits you with its charge and is followed by mortification where it crushes you to death.
Enzymicude is where your standing on the spitter's acid spit.
And Exenteration is where the hunter pounces on you and rips you apart.

    • @Littlevampiregirl100
      @Littlevampiregirl100 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

i had to look up vassalation. i always thought it was just a way to say jockey is the vassal and you are his steed. but turns out, to vassate someone is to make them dependent or a subordinate to you. very fitting. most of them are..
asphyxiation is a fancy word for strangulation, or deprivation of oxygen
      contusion is blunt trauma
exenteration is surgical removal from a cavity in the body, basically organ removal
enzymicide seems to be the only word that is made up, from the word enzyme. biochemical reactive substance produced by a living being
mortification i think is the least fitting. it means to be very embarrassed. the only embarrassing thing about being pummeled by charger is dying from it, that always takes the longest of all specials without the help of a horde, and it likely means you were left behind. unless he just charges you off the map, which can be pretty embarrassing too. he is the only special that uses direct blunt trauma to kill you, i think it would have been more fitting with a word describing that, like for his charge

The "Bacteria" track is for when the special infected spawn, each of the pieces of it are for their own special infected, like a leitmotif.
1st - Jockey, little gremlin that latches onto you and drags you around away from your team.
2nd - Spitter, Gross person who most likely had phlegm problems or acid reflux before turning, spits acid at you.
3rd - Charger, person who most likely um, idk jorked it a lot. Charges at you and pummels you into the ground after smashing you into a wall.
4rd - Hunter, A street runner or someone who liked doing parkour, leaps long distances, pins you down and starts mauling you.
5th - Smoker, A person who smoked a lot, uses its elongated tongue to grapple and pull you close, explodes in a cloud of smoke when killed
6th - Boomer, a person who ate a lot before turning, yaks bile all over survivors to draw infecteds attention towards them, blows up and spews bile everywhere when damaged.

Kingdom Hearts X (chi) sits just above it in my personal ranking as it’s probably the most energetic and playful sounding version, and I just think it’s fun.
Weirdly enough, I’d probably pick Dream Drop Distance as having my favorite rendition of Dearly Beloved, even though it’s easily one of my least favorite games in the series for purely personal reasons. I can’t quite put into words why it’s my favorite, but it is.
