I literally beat realism expert within an hour of attempts. It was Dead Center and I got lucky with map 3's alarm event, that was a run killer previously.
As a person that lives in Louisiana (Near New Orleans) I can explain why the campaign is so depressing. New Orleans is filled with people and joy with the whole place despite the lack of color on buildings etc. When the main part of New Orleans is taken away (People) It makes the place seem forgotten and grim and the streets filled with zombies adding more of a depressing state to The Parish.

I’m a born and raised Louisiana resident that grew up like 20 minutes outside of New Orleans. Coincidentally, I was also really getting into zombie apocalypse stuff as a kid by the time L4D1-2 came out. Trecking through malls, mills, swamps, and finally to The Parish was a fantastic feeling. Seeing the streets so broken, dead, haunting. The OST did an AMAZING job at capturing the theme with a somber Louisiana jazz twist. Where most of L4D2 was lighthearted compared to the first game, the hauntingly empty streets, scattered food, hastily put together barricades, and fires were all beautifully atmospheric. The Parish’s theme also filled the air with an eerie yet beautiful danger. Truthfully, it reminded me of the Left 4 Dead intro screen from the last game. SUPER depressing.
dude totally! I was really into zombies as a kid too, and L4D blew my mind when I first found out about it. I loved it all but Blood Harvest in particular really freaked me out. I grew up in the midwest right next to a huge national park that looks a lot like the one in the game lol. I also have family with a farm & farm house like the finale which did not help haha. I agree, the first game is really cool with its creepy atmosphere and tone, but imo L4D2 nailed it. It's a great mix of fun, scary, and chaos until you make it to New Orleans. The broken dead streets with the sad music in a normally fun & bustling city is so good, along with the fact the characters fought the whole game to try to get there only to find out they were too late. I wish more games could do what the L4Ds did for me lol, they were special

no matter how long youve played l4d you cant deny when the tank music hits there is always panic as the screen shakes more violently or when the game becomes a room clearing operation looking for the witch
What I love about the OST is that it plays on two emotions people usually have during the time when the zombie craze was in its peak: The joy of unadulterated freedom and emptiness caused by a loss of control.
The left 4 dead menu theme is so sad, sure there are various ones, but they still have that somber and hopeless feel to them, as the infected mindlessly wonder around in the background, it’s like there’s no hope at all for humanity
