Lani Hall did all that wonderful Brazilian music with Brasil 66 phonetically. She could not speak a word of Portuguese but you’d never know it from her singing.
I know how it is. Even when I play and sing La Bamba, and many other songs in different languages, it comes out perfectly. But, I haven’t a clue to the meaning of the words. Lani always did a great job. I’m so glad that she hooked up with Herb.
Upon first hearing Portuguese it was not at all what I expected. The written language appears to be a bit of French, Spanish and Italian mixed together but why I assumed it would sound much closer to Spanish I just can't explain.
Him talking about our beloved Karen Carpenter brought a tear to my eye. I have been a Carpenter fan my entire 57 years of life. Herb was instrumental in their success.
@Avalon. I'm 69 and have loved Karen too since I first heard her. My voice teacher in the 70s had me sing songs made famous by female artists even though Im a man to increase my range and the Carpenters were one of my favorites to practice! Even at 69 GOD has blessed me to still be able to sing pretty good, especially for an old dude! I can still sing a good "Superstar" and "We've only just begun". I actually sang that at my wedding when I was 22. Memories!! Thank YOU FATHER for everything!! Amen! Love and blessings to all my brothers and sisters in Christ!! Halleluyah! Jim
Karen's death at 32 was enough of a shocker until the cause leading up her demise became known. Anorexia was not known to the general public at that time---only in medical circles. An eating disorder wasn't anything the average person would think of when seeing a super slim woman---it was just assumed she had some sort of medical issue where she couldn't keep food down due to chemo, had a very high metabolism or was hospitalized for a while. A family member had IBS and could never gain weight in his youth, he was always noticeably too thin for his height and frame. These days, people would wonder about him being either anorexic or HIV positive.
The awesome & amazing Mr. Alpert is still going strong these days at 88 ! He & his wife Lani have such a wonderfully inspirationally happy marriage. Bless their hearts ! They're incredibly multi-talented & extremely generous to a wide variety of causes. Thanks for sharing this marvelous CBS Sunday Morning segment.

Their collections included Sergio Mendez & Brazil '66, Trini Lopez and Jose Feliciano with Herbs records too and so much more. The best!!!! I have been obsessed for decades. I am a singer (it is my instrument) tried to play other instruments but wasn't my gift. Brings back the best memories.❤
I grew up listening to H. A. . I listen to his music all the time. I call it my happy music. I can't be depressed when I hear his songs. Thanks Herb. We also grew up with Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. I remember when their hit " Mas Que Nada" 1st came out. Lani Hall and the whole gang did some awesome records/songs and we also listen to their records to this day. Brings back wonderful memories of growing up.
I was a senior in high school having brunch in the 1960s with my mother at Daly's Dandelion on Third Avenue and 61st Street. In the background was Herb Alpert's "This Guy's In Love With You". Heaveny...
Cool & smooth, grew up listening to Herb, later with Lani. Fell in love with her & her voice. I even named one of my daughters after her. They are legend....
Hope other artists look at this man as an example. Rappers instead of throwing your money at night clubs and toys, help your local schools with their art programs. Herb has given 100,000,000 to charity. Wow that is wonderful, Herb and is wife are just beautiful.
I'm a musician and I see him as a role model and inspiration. A very selfless and modest man who enjoys his successes and gives back to his community. Long may he reign!
When I watched this last year on tv, I was happy for the good health and continued success of Herb Alpert, but I completely missed realizing that his wife Lani was the mellifluous voice of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 in her day. Wow! I loved loved loved them! Great to see them both so happy and healthy!

Humble, compassionate and caring - he challenges the notion that you have to be hard nosed and callous to run a record label. His wife was the lead female vocalist with Sergio Mendes and Brazil ‘66 who got their big break when Herb Alpert signed them to A&M Records in 1966.

As a kid in the 80s I was part of a school choir that was scheduled to sing with the Carpenters but they cancelled last minute because Karen got sick.. don't know if it was related.. After highschool I spent most of my time in Hollywood and walked past the A&M records on La Brea all the time and one time had the guts to go in and ask for a job.. didn't happen, but good times anyway..

Saw Herb and Lani at the Carlyle a few years ago. A nice intimate setting to enjoy their unique sound and talent. He actually shook my hand as he left the stage. I was flabbergasted!

Always had a crush on him when I was a small child because my Mom had a lot of his albums when they came out in the 60's and I listened to them all the time, and even as a small child, I thought he was the most handsome man alive, besides Pernell Roberts, my other little girl crush.
"Genuine" is the word that most frequently comes up when describing Herb and Lani. (I share a birthday with Herb - March 31!) As for Lani, from her first appearances in Brasil 66 you couldn't take your eyes off her. Two people in love with music who found each other, have enormous success, living their best life on 5 acres in West Malibu that was dropped in his lap. "One day in 1971, my secretary told me that a movie director she knew who lived on 6 acres at the northern end of Malibu had died. His son inherited the land and was planning to develop 25 lots on the property. But when the California Coastal Commission was formed in late 1972, it rejected his proposal, leaving him stuck. Somehow, he heard I might be interested and called to see if I wanted to buy the property. Actually, I was happy where I was living and hadn’t really thought about buying that much land. Besides, the director’s house was an hour’s drive to A&M’s offices on Sunset Boulevard. I put him off. Then one night he called in desperation. Since he couldn’t develop the property, it was becoming a financial burden. I offered him half his asking price in cash. He accepted and we closed in June 1974. That December, singer Lani Hall and I were married on the property. " Who gets that much luck in life?

As for the Whipped Cream LP ( as such discs were called then) I was, shall we say, 'surprised' at seeing that album cover (more amazed that my dad had bought it, really😂). Didn't much like that music then. Love it now.
I would say living the good life and doing it well. I've always been a fan of Herb Albert in the Tijuana brass since I was a little kid in the early 60s. Got to love the guy and his true love Lani Hall. He has been blessed in his career his life and most importantly in love.
