Mr. Alpert came to Portland Oregon in the mid 70s. He bought dinner for his band and a lot of other people at a restaurant near downtown. One waitress took care of them all night, and he went out of his way to make sure she was well treated, and then gave her the best tip she got ever at that job. She needed it. She was my mother, and we were scraping by. He didn't have to do that. Thank you Mr. Alpert.

Out of all the music that I listen to, and I listen to music from country to rock to jazz and everything in between, Herb Alpert is by far and away my favorite artist and always will be. in the 60s when I was growing up, I listened to Herb Alpert on the hi-fi because my parents were huge Herb Alpert fans. The best that ever was and ever will be Herb Alpert and the TJ B.

Man, Herb Alpert what a wonderful soul! Still cries about Karen Carpenter as many of us do. Thanks for all the memories and your generosity.

Jeffrey Miller He cries because must feel some of blame due a frustated release of Karen's solo album. She stayed devastated, and she was very ill. If that recording had released, she would have cured and she still would be alive.

      Jeffrey Miller
Rick Henry: I ask every fan I interview about Karen's solo album. I feel it's one of the most important albums in the entire output of Carpenters/Carpenters related music.
Had the album been released in 1980 do you think it would have changed the way people viewed Karen Carpenter?
Randy Schmidt: I think it might have given her a bit more edge than she’d had in the past. I do NOT think it would have done anything to tarnish her image or reputation.
RH: Do you think her solo album may have helped or hindered sales of subsequent Carpenters albums?
RS: If anything it would have helped. By 1980, the Carpenters’ albums were not selling like they did even five years earlier. It would have surely garnered more attention and sales than Passage and Made in America. It would have at least had people talking.
RH: Do you think the album would have changed Karen's course of life in anyway? If so how?
RS: I have said this before, but I firmly believe that Karen’s whirlwind romance with Tom Burris was a rebound from the disappointment and eventual shelving of the solo album. Had she been releasing and promoting an album in the spring of 1980, she would not have had time to devote to that relationship. In that manner, I do feel it would have changed the course of her life in a very big way. Also, I wish she’d stood up to Richard and the folks at A&M. Herb Alpert never liked their A Kind of Hush album, but it wasn’t stopped. There wasn’t pressure to go back and redo everything. It was terribly crushing for Karen to have this album-her most personal, creative product ever-deemed unworthy of release. Her friends told me she never fully trusted Richard after that. Their relationship was damaged and you can sense the tension in the interviews they did together for Made in America.

Since I was a kid growing up in the 60s I listened to Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass, my parents used to play his music at parties and it was such a positive lively sound, playful fun music spectacularly played, what a treat. But now that I know a little about the man behind the music, I can see that it came from a kind loving soul who wanted to bring everybody joy. This is embodied in his generosity and art, Is this a cool guy or what?

When Herb Alpert passes one day he will be remembered as a great man and musician who inspired so many others with his music and generosity. If the question is asked, was the world a better place because of his life, the answer would be an easy yes. As a trumpet player myself in the 1960's his music was such a joy to play and listen to. While in a rock band in 1969I got to play the wonderful song "A Taste of Honey" on stage and it meant so much to me with my admiration for Herb Alpert and at that moment understood the real joy of giving to others while performing. His music will be loved long after all of us are just memories. He is a true legend.

My daughter is a participant in the theater program at HSA (Harlem School of the Arts). We are beneficiaries of his generosity. Starting Feb. 24, 2017, they will begin performing their interpretation of Euripides' Trojan Women. She is very excited about it and is looking forward to acting in this production. The sparkle in her eyes, as a result of having this outlet to express her creativity...my words would be inadequate to express how much I truly appreciate the fact that he saw fit to give both his money and his time to HSA. It makes her spirit "Rise!"

I guess it didn’t hurt to have been raised in New Mexico but I ended up making a living as a rock guitar player for a short period of time and I still love to play and I was infatuated as a young teen by Lani with Brazil 66, she sounded so sexy....and I love Herb Alpert... • @MusicGunn
      @MusicGunn 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Well come on people. The Beatles were "vastly overrated"; "better"?. Whatever... They were not musicians of the caliber of ANY jazz musicians of the time, that is undeniably true, but if you look at their song writing and progression over the years and how they changed music, I don't think anyone can say they were overrated. That's like saying Michael Jordan was vastly overrated despite having won 6 world championships. The Beatles did at least one thing better than anybody ever, and that was to capture the world of music like no one ever had before or since and may never again.
Maybe you liked other bands better than the Beatles, but to say someone is better is subjective. Fine, your opinion is yours and I will not argue that. But I liked both and I don't think liking the Beatles and HA&TB is mutually exclusive. I love them both. Herb Albert is still changing the world with his philanthropy and I say more power to him.

Herb is a truly a class act. It made me smile when I found out he didn't hesitate to give back by writing a half-million dollar check to keep that school open. If more multimillionaires would do things like this -- instead of just hoarding more money than they could possibly need in a lifetime -- this world would be a better place.

@Willie Gordon: Merely wishing for greater displays of "voluntary" charity in this world than that which already exists doesn't quite make someone a communist. Though I can see how confusing this might be to easily-triggered simpletons considering how poorly skilled they are at differentiation.

Herb Alpert made, and still does with his wife Lani, make a tremendous impact on many people. Because he transfers an 'inspiring feeling' from the art of music to the ear and soul of the listener. I think it pertinent to mention the wonderful inspiration and influence that Lani, my favorite vocalist, has given as well. Listening to Herb & Lani, with their great back up group, Herb still expresses 'that feeling', and Lani is outstanding as well. -- and special inspiration to my start in music as well.

I have always LOVED Herb Alpert's trumpet from my 'young days' of hearing his music on "The Dating Game" and on...now after watching this clip of him and his beautiful wife and how they have 'given back' by way of the Harlem School of Music my appreciation has considerably GROWN! Much love & respect to you and your wife as well! ♥♥

@@bradfordhammond8689 I LOVE HERB. What a wonderful and talented man. I grew up listening to the Carpenters and know the story of their rise to astounding success and the part that Herb played in it at his A& M record studio where I believe ALL of the Carpenters songs were recorded. It doesn't surprise me that he chokes up when thinking of Karen. She was so young and talented and it truly is a loss that so many were devastated by. Including myself. I was just listening to her today. Some days I can't listen. The voice of an angel. I miss you Karen.

I was a grade school kid learning music in public school in the sixties as he became popular. I remember buying The Beat of the Brass on vinyl. I've been fortunate to have spent most of my adult life as a career trombonist, and it's hard to measure or describe the impact not just of TJB, of the MANY wonderful artists cultivated through A&M. My influences have come from many places, but Herb, Sergio Mendez, and so many other A&M artists remain close to my heart.

A living Legend. The horn personified. The greatest trumpeter since the beginning of time! And a humble one at that, one who brushes away his colossal accomplishments as if it is nothing! The TJB lives! And, thanks for bringing all those awesome artists through A & M Records...I write this drinking from my A & M Records cup!

What a life, well-lived. The estate is incredible. The artistic talent is amazing. His musical contributions are fantastic. And yet he still seems a very humble guy.
I remember in the '70s thinking that the best-quality vinyl records I bought were always from A&M. They always has the best sound reproduction and they were the first I recall to provide a plastic liner for the record's paper sleeve. They cared about what their products sounded like.

I'd recommend "Mr A and Mr M: The Story of A&M Records" if you haven't already seen it. They delve into: the attention to artists needs and, the attention to artwork on album covers, etc. It was the "mom and pop store" run by people who had a passion. Looks to have been a cool place to have been a musician and/or other employee. Just the setting of Charlie Chaplin's old studio is cool vibes!

I still dance to, and play my trumpet comb with aluminum foil, along with my late brother, to the tune of the old Casino Royale theme (the one with Peter Sellers), and A Taste of Honey. I was not able to afford a trumpet, but boy, did we have fun! Thanks, Herb.
