Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass was the band that inspired me as a Pennsylvania farm boy to become a musician. Up to that point there were no musicians in my family. I have since played music through Europe, the eastern and western United States. Thank you Herb Alpert and your band members for your inspiration. I am very grateful.
Great for you. I started playing the trumpet in the 5th grade, maybe 4 years before the T.J.B. surfaced. But when I heard his style, he and Hugh Masekela have inspired me to continue playing to my current young age of 74..
I think he’s one of the coolest musicians out there. Although I normally play guitar and sing professionally, I love playing all of his songs on my trumpet. I’ve listened to him since the ‘60’s and just saw him perform in 2023. He’s still the coolest. 😊

Before my time but I love how effortlessly he plays. He may not hit the killer high notes like Louis Armstrong or Maynard Ferguson but his smooth playing is remarkable and the catchyness of his tunes without words is phenomenal. My favorite is Taste of Honey.

Just yesterday I was playing my "Whipped Cream And Other Delights" LP. How can we listen to this music and not get a big smile on our face? I miss music the way we had it back in the '60s in the U.S. Our local AM stations would play a great mix of artists, from Herb Alpert and Frank Sinatra to The Beatles and The Beach Boys.
As a young boy how could that album cover not put a smile on a young mana face. Whoever was in the marketing department knew that cover would sell albums and let the music do the rest
@@blackisback74 Oh yeah, and I often thought how awesome it would be to lick off that whipped cream, until I found out it was really shaving cream, lol.
That's so true. AM Top 40 radio included everything. In 1969, first year I started listening to the radio, the Top 40 had Pop music, of course, and variations of Rock n Roll (hard Rock, acid Rock), jazz groups like Blood Sweat and Tears, Motown, of course, a little bit of Country (Johnny Cash, Roy Clark), bubble gum (the Archies, the Cuff Links), a little Gospel (the Edwin Hawkins Singers), even a little reggae (Desmond Dekker), and, yes, there were still the big sellers like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones; vocal music by singers like Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, and Bobby Vinton; and a few instrumentals, like "Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet." Great groups like the Doors, The Guess Who, 3 Dog Night, Credence Clearwater Revival, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Cream, The Bob Seger System. Yes. AM Top 40 offered all of that. A complete musical education.
The timeless Latin jazz sounds of the sixties you never get sick of listening to, they just bring back the fun time simple sixties era all over again, love the dresses and hairstyles, looks and dancing movements to.
When his music came out he was on top of the rock and roll charts. The music that came out in 1967, 68 and 69 that was on top of the charts is not the music that people nowadays think it is. The definition of rock is what? The music that sold . He should be in there but everything is so political and who makes the decisions?
Man, I played the hell out of my trumpet with Herb Albert records when I was a kid back in the 70's. Now I'm gonna have to go dig my old Bach Stradivarius Trumpet out of my closet and see if I can still do it.
Me too! Played them all for practice. Performed the solo in This Guy..." with our HS jazz band at a band festival (on my trumpet, certainly not singing)...
There is a really great documentary about Herb, that goes well beyond the TJB. What he created at A&M records with his partner; as an artist; and as a philanthropist bringing music into the lives of people. I highly recommend it, I think Freevee has it.
Ah the childhood memories come rushing back , even though I am in my 60's. My mother loved Herb Alpert and TJ Brass. She played his albums all the time when I was a kid. I still play their music and think of her and the long-ago, care-free days of just sitting and listening to such great music. Miss you mom!
What a lovely story and sentiment. Same goes here, this music was the soundtrack to all my parents parties back in the 60's & 70's. Man, they knew how to have FUN!
I love the music, but I also love how ridiculously savvy Herb was about branding and promotion. He just knew how to do it right! In the liner notes to the first TJB LP, it says something like, "Word is getting out that Herb is something special. Some folks say he could make it big in the movies." Totally amazing, because the release is on his own record label, and he probably wrote liner notes himself! :) But, I wish he HAD made it big in the movies!
Talk about a true upbeat band this was it. Thy had the audience on their feet clapping. Great music, great entertainers and front page billing here ever they went to perform. Good memories too!
I was introduced to Herb Alpert's music by my dad, and as a result have some of his music on vinyl. There is one album "The Beat of the Brass" which features "This Guys in Love With You" on it, and all I can say is, that for an album that is now 50+ years old, the quality is absolutely outstanding, both in the music, and the recording. I was in my late teens back then. Herb and his Tijuana Brass had a no. 1 hit in the charts - *A Taste Of Honey*. Everywhere you went you'd hear it on radio. I learned later that Herb didn't really consider himself a great trumpet player - but I think he was selling himself short; he got a great sound out of that thing, and his playing was rhythmic and tight, sort of light-jazzy and band was top notch. And he was such a good looking dude the girls all swooned over him.
His tone is good, his phrasing is good, and he has a way with a melody. Those count. No, he really doesn't compare with Malcolm McNab (lead trumpet on a thousand Hollywood scores), but nobody compares with Malcolm McNab.
My grandmother really enjoyed Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. She passed away last month November at the age of 79. Had many of their records RIP grandma
What a helluva artist! Never putting any one or type of music down A true gentleman and music officiato. Grew up playing trumpet, my idol. The most effort less style. I to this day have every album the group put out, and cherish them all Play on!!
As a young man, I really liked the sexy cover of the album "Whipped Cream." Later on in life, when I started a career in photography, I learned the album cover photographer used SHAVING CREAM because whipped cream would have melted too quickly under the heat of studio lights (and the body heat of the "hot" model).
I think this was recorded around 1966...what a great era with so many different kinds of music on the hit parade. From this to Beach boys and orchestral pieces by Bert Kämpfert....what a great era. 👍

Assistindo o video e curtindo o talento deste músico e sua otima banda. Fico aqui pensando, onde andará aquelas moças que dançaram tão felizes naquele show... Devem estar velhinhas...
I may not have been conceived to this music but it IS the soundtrack to my formative years. As a toddler I was enthralled by the tight and sound of the reels of tape turning on the Akai reel to reel tape recorder, playing this music. My father loved to borrow the albums from friends and record them to tape and then play the hell out of the tapes, possibly because he was cheap, but the funny part is that the blank tapes cost as much as the albums would have cost! LOL. However, more than 50 years later I still have the tapes and own that tape deck. And I play them. This music is one of the defining experiences of my youth...maybe even my whole life.
A local grocery store had a promotion back in the 60's, spend so much and a Herb Albert LP was included. I had them all and enjoy his music 50 years later!
Brilliant! The TJB were always the $#!T when it came to music - no matter what your taste, you couldn’t help but feel happy upon hearing anything by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Let’s face it, Herb was the James Bond of music. As a five year old I realized this - women wanted him and men wanted to be him. Everything about him was cool and controlled. The finger pops, head bobs, the total control of the band and the sheer ease of his playing style made it clear that he was the man. No wonder that he became the music mogul that he was with A & M Records and with a personal net worth of close to a billion dollars. I’ve seen many of the greats in concert from so many musical genres - I do regret not seeing Herb (would have killed to see him perform with the TJB).
My mother bought The Lonely Bull album which was released in 1962. I was 10 years old then and I remember really enjoying this music and Herb Albert's trumpet playing
The TJB was part of our family car's 8-Track playlist on many summer vacation trips. Along with Tom Jones, Beach Boys, Al Martino, and others. Great memories associated with the sound of the TJB.

He singlehandedly brought back the instrumental. He also discovered Brasil '66, one of the most iconic groups of the sixties.
And, he “discovered” his future wife, Lani Hall, the lead singer of Brasil 66.
He also discovered, The Carpenters. He had his own record label, A&P Records and had many musicians on his record label.

Oh oh...another "underrated" comment here.
It's sad that instrumental music doesn't chart any longer... superb talent...Herb Albert was exceptional in business as well.
We can keep it alive as we can! Music of our lives keeps us breathing and vibrant!
There are a few like Boney James, Rick Braun, Kenny G...and some electronica like Enigma.
Radio used to tie us all together especially through instrumentals, which crossed all boundaries and generations.
There was and never will be a band like Herb Alpert and TJB
The Tijuana Brass really was just Herb Alpert and some studio musicians. The musicians here were people he hired to play in concert. Or on tv.
Hal Blaine's iconic drum beats on Taste Of Honey. 😊
The rock band Chicago (earliest days known as Chicago Transit Authority) has a lot of brass instruments in early songs.

Assistindo o video e curtindo o talento deste músico e sua otima banda. Fico aqui pensando, onde andará aquelas moças que dançaram tão felizes naquele show... Devem estar velhinhas...
There very first hit as I remember! Their music totally blew me away and still does today in 2024 ❤!
The band members or sidemen if will were some of the best paid in the business. They were awesome.
They could certainly mime like pros…
I may not have been conceived to this music but it IS the soundtrack to my formative years. As a toddler I was enthralled by the tight and sound of the reels of tape turning on the Akai reel to reel tape recorder, playing this music. My father loved to borrow the albums from friends and record them to tape and then play the hell out of the tapes, possibly because he was cheap, but the funny part is that the blank tapes cost as much as the albums would have cost! LOL. However, more than 50 years later I still have the tapes and own that tape deck. And I play them. This music is one of the defining experiences of my youth...maybe even my whole life.
raw beautiful music love the horns! thanks for sharing
its really timeless music. still good after all these years.
Floydd That’s so correct.
A local grocery store had a promotion back in the 60's, spend so much and a Herb Albert LP was included. I had them all and enjoy his music 50 years later!
Danced to his music in high school! Love the memories!❤
So TRUE!
"The JAMES BOND of Music"!!!
I was fortunate enough to see him in 65-66 and the front band was Baja marimba band. It was a great show.
This is not a live performance. They are faking to a pre recorded tracks

My mother bought The Lonely Bull album which was released in 1962. I was 10 years old then and I remember really enjoying this music and Herb Albert's trumpet playing
Herb is a national treasure. I have had his music in my car, iPod and I Phone since the 60's
My moms favorite. I was 6 years old but I still remember............
The TJB was part of our family car's 8-Track playlist on many summer vacation trips. Along with Tom Jones, Beach Boys, Al Martino, and others. Great memories associated with the sound of the TJB.
Look at those birds they have hanging around the set! Such a different time.

I grew up listening to mom and dad play this music and watching them dance to it! Their music is still as alive as I remember!
Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass were one of the best bands of the 1960's and early 1970's,and I still enjoy their music even today;the BBC special was great!
