Some Sealers like to leave a slightly textured finish. I like to use a 1.2 and speed up my arm movement, and apply a 'closed thin coat’ but mostly covered. Keep your overspray under control and try not to go back and respray an area you miss, the overspray is heavy and does'nt always melt in easily, so try not to miss as you go. Most sealers are a 15-20min flash, spray your sealer then go mix your colour. You mentioned a cushion, I happen to know at a Honda plant for example, they apply an additional coat of ‘Cushion' along the front, foot of the hood and 8’ along the bottom of the vehicle. Without Sealer on new parts it stone chips much more easily. Also, sealer can be your friend, cause it can eliminate prepping to a real fine paper. If applying sealer to a primed bumper for example, you can sand to 4-500 grt and spray it silver, without sand scratches . Also, aways think of the customer, it will make you a better painter! Good Video!
Nice content with sealer, I love using it and in some cases you are supposed to use it like raw bumpers...For whites try doing 2 medium coats to get full coverage, at least that's what I do for Standox Urethane...also 5-10 minutes isn't really accurate, at least not for Standox solvents. It's supposed to flash 15-20 minutes between coats to allow it to fully breathe
Thanks again. I used slow reluctantly but it made a world of difference. Was having trouble getting white sealer to go on even with medium. In Texas. Med is more like fast. 👍
Just got some Naaon 2k sealer at Auto Value store today it costed 199 with tax for a gallon and the medium hardner. I haven't went to Auto Value a lot but they have a lot more paint, hardners, and other auto products. I will be using my Harbor Freight 1.4 gun on my small 26 gallon air compressor to put the sealer on. In the future gonna get the Fuji Q5 platinum turbine I saw it online for a cheap price.
before I started I have my truck down to the bear metal now and wanted to make sure that Im suppose to use epoxy primer first then the sealer. Is this right? Thanks
Good morning Gabriel, is that a sealer for waterborne basecoat, or solvent basecoat? Really flowed out nice. Your right, smooth surface, smooth basecoat, makes smooth clear. Thanks for another great video. Take care.
Very very helpful !!! I am using Eastwoods epoxy primer as a sealer. Would you says its okay to use a 1.4 tip to get a finer finish ? I was using a 1.8 and I also use a 10% reducer...appreciate the tips and your proof in is the finish
Thank you for your videos and all your efforts I'm fixing to start myself I was going to thin my DTM U-Pol primer and use that for my sealer do you recommend I do something else instead
Question? How’s your setting on your gun? I have the same one. Amazing gun , I haven’t use it yet for sealer . And it does amazing they way you did it. Thanks a lot.
Bro well done.. For this.. I am trying to respray my father's car. I am planning to sand it with 800 with interface pad. Do i need to apply sealer on a whole car because the oem paint it 15 years old. Like. If yes. What pressure. I have devilbiss basic gun. 1.3? Please help
What you need to know is that sealer won't fix anything if there is peeling paint or stone chips or anything like that you need to fix them before you paint the car you can primer the whole car so in order to fix all the chips and stuff. That gun will do fine for Sealer base and clear
Where do you get you paint coverall suit, special the gray one , sata, arnest iwata. Muy buena imformacion en tus videos. Gracias por tomar tu tiempo y compartir tus experiencias.
WHAT GRIT PAPER DO YOU FOLLOW UP WITH PRIOR TO SPRAYING THE BASE COATS ?? DO YOU WET SAND THE SEALER COAT?? GREAT VIDEO- YOU EXPLAINED IT VERY WELL; THANK YOU,PATRICK.P
What type of sandpaper/grit you use to sand factory primer?..or should I just use automotive scotch brite? Thanks and keep them great videos coming cause you are the best📚✌
Great video! I was on the fence about doing primer sealer, but I'm glad I bought it. My only mistake was I bought the "fast" hardener for the sealer (60-75F)...and not the medium (76-90F)...is this going to kill my texture so much where I can't flow coat it out in the end with the clear? (It's about 60F where I'm shooting right now)
Awesome, thanks for the uber fast response! It's my first full car paint job and I've been prepping for months now to make sure I have everything I need before I commence
+Nperez1986 awesome man ! I'm going to give you some advice. You will screw up eventually and that will not be the last time so don't let it ruin your day . Fix it and move on !
Nice vid man, i always run a strip of sealer on both adjacent panels as well so where the door meets the rear door and fender color hits perfect cause itll have exact same amount of paint all the way threw. Just a tip i do nontheless great video keep it up!
garrett stokes for sure man, then theres no way the color can be off lol. I paint everything i csn off the car unless its a tricoat etc just to be safe. Which ive done tons of them off the car too lol. Keep up the hard work guys our industry is dying !

Great video bro... Bro I wanted to ask you something when you have your gun with your own set up. While applying sealer. Base or clear.. Do you press all the trigger down. Or you just play with the trigger not pressing it all the way down.
Does sealer determine the lightness or darkness of your basecoat? Like if I use light grey sealer or dark grey sealer will it make an effect on my basecoat darkness or lightness? I understand coverage is key but the tone of 1st coat basecoat..?
What's your opinion on using global reducers in ECS, we have always used DT reducers but I always wondered if it sprayed any different? Awesome video man keep it up 👍🏻
Omg. Always sealed with 391, didn 't even know 392 existed. My paint supplier didn 't even keep it in stock. But now that i tried it , wouldn t go back to 391. The finish is so much smoother, wow. Thanks for this awesome tip.
Depending on the Sealer you use, its not necessary to sand. It adheres very well. Although a light scuff with a scotch brite to check for imperfections is always good. Not sure why guys oversand and sand through all over the place, makes me crazy.
Hi Motivated painter, my question is what if I have a original OEM bumper and I use adhesion promoter and then my base and clear, what are the long term effects?
Quick question.. If your doing a repair and you create a burn through when sanding the base coat; making the substrate uneven .. Would you recommend using bondo and sanding it down, then using a guide coat, high build primer and then sealer before re-applying base coat? I keep getting halo’s and lines in my gray metallic paint. It’s driving me insane.
Can't skimp out on a sealer gun. I use my lph-400 for it now. I tried the entech once but couldn't bring myself to use it for sealer after. I love it for base. You only spray one coat?
Gabriel.... (No one on TH-cam wants to respond to this question) I'm using a dark grey sealer made by Omni-plus and thinking about using it to black out all the chrome on this car. Is it safe to spray clear-coat over sealer and call it a day?
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS The clear DOES adhere to sealer and looks very unique. It lays very wet and dries flat. I put it under 100lbs of pressure and power-washed it and it's holding fantastic. I used a dark grey sealer and the clear made the grey pop, which gave it a very unique plastic-look with a blueish tint... so if people are looking for that "blacked-out" look... they'll have to use black sealer. Will it hold up to the weather and what will it look like in 4 years? I don't know - but I'm gambling on it and painting a whole truck like this - no base-coat. There's nothing like it. Peace to you and your family.
It's 3:1:1 here is the link ca.ppgrefinish.com/getdoc/89f065d5-fbb9-452c-843a-565e47ad1d5b/Envirobase-High-Performance.aspx ECS61A-Chromatic Sealer - White
So I have a few questions. Could I use ppg gripper which says it's a primer sealer and it's an acrylic water based on metal and then apply oil based enamel paint on it. Thought about getting just regular oil based primer but would it be better to use a water based acrylic sealer. Or will oil based enamel not like water based acrylic even if fully cured.
Gabriel. What's the best way to spray sealer on a hood? I can seem to get it to lay smooth on fenders, but can't seem to get it to lay smooth when I spray a hood. Using a Devillbiss starting line gun. I use that gun for base and now use a Tekna clearcoat gun for clear. You think i may need to spray sealer with my clearcoat gun?
So what if solvent pop happens on sealer? How can i get rid of them sanding with 320 dry? What is recommended? Because i know it can happen messing up is some thing that can happen weather its on primer , sealer , clear coat , base coat you name it.
Okay, I have a mustang that has been sanded and scuffed with a black coat. I need to add a coat or two of epoxy primer? Or should it be a sealer? Instead? My car is going to be orange. So where would I get a sealer that would help me paint this base color? So I need a primer surfacer not a sealer...if I need to finish blocking out the car. But if it was already blocked? Then use a sealer between the primer surface and color coat. Or is using an epoxy sealer the same as what you are doing. By using a primer-sealer? I'm getting confused.
Hello Rick hope you are doing well. I'm doing good thanks. I have no way of knowing what on the car but I would suggest sanding it and putting a couple of coats of primer and blocking it down with 400 600 and then 800 grit for a smooth finish then paint. I only use sealer for new parts that come from factory.
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS Thanks for the advice. Actually, I was talking about getting aftermarket parts for my mustang. They come with an ecoat. What I researched is sand them with 400 wet. Then scuff them with green pads. Which I think is just to make sure you get the shine off of it and it is ready to paint. Then some say go with a sealer coat if they do not need blocking. Instead of primer. As they are ready to paint after scuffing them. Seems if you get into the metal though you would want an epoxy sealer. Instead of just a paint sealer. Not sure. So many variations on youtube with so many different people doing so many different things. I did take the mustang body all the way to metal. Then I sprayed 2 heavy coats of expoxy primer on it that were white. Then from there I sprayed two coats of surface primer. Blocked it out and now it is ready for perhaps that sealer which I've heard about using. Not epoxy. .Just a sealer. Before spraying with an orange base. So I only block down to 400 wet sandings. As from that, I can spray base on it and it will stick real good. I just got a hood in the other day and found it had a primer on the top and ecoat underneath. and it had a black primer coat on the top. Underneath was an eCoat. When I took acetone and removed the primer in a small area I could see the ecoat finish that was real shiny. The issue I saw is that the ecoat had not been sanded or prepped before hand. Or roughed up in any way so how in the world would they expect that coat of primer to stick to it? It was still shiny! So I spent all morning today taking it down to bare metal so I could put two coats of epoxy primer on it. Tomorrow I will spray two coats of surface primer on and block it out just to be sure there is no hidden woopidoos. I should have called whoever sent the hood and asked them about it. Lots of work to do that on a perfectly good hood. Or should have been perfect at $400 dollars.
How much psi on that gun trigger squeezed all the way when spraying base coat and clear coat? Also your fan settings, how many turns clockwise from full open?
What color primer sealer would you put on a vehicle that is midnight blue metallic and it is going to a daytona electric blue color because am painting my truck to a electric daytona blue metallic from a midnight metallic blue all I need is a primer because have the clear and base already I know will have to sand and put guide coat on before putting on the sealer though.
Can you plz explain what do you mean by saying sealer as am not eng I dont really get it like I dont know is it a product or is it a part of the car.. And another question.can you ever apply a color over a wet clear coat then apply clear coat again and can you imagine what result you will get.. Thanks bro i enjoy your vids
Hello new to your channal I will be using wet on wet or (sealer) I am getting confused between hb wet on wet and non hb wet on wet the 1 I have brought seems to be hb 6:1 ratio I just wanted to spray 1 thin coat by the way I am a first time user for wet on wet thank you fo the video
+Michael Bullock honestly that's what was brought here when we switched haha and since I didn't know anything about ppg I didn't know there was anything else haha I'm going to ask about it, thanks man!!
Do you always supposed to use primer sealer even if don't use a body filler. When first tried to paint my older truck earlier this use I used primer but no sealer but had tried to paint it multiple times but never came out the way I liked it but I did eventually use a sealer but didn't do the steps in a right way because I didn't use the water pump bottle as you did. My spray gun used was a very cheap spray gun too. I don't know in future if will paint again but I liked it a lot even though am still a beginner. I was painting outside a lot too so that is different than painting in a garage.
an expert painter can do ok with a cheap gun not a beginner get an flg5 at least you will get much better paint ideal for diy guys and I always use sealer cheaper than the extra paint you have to get without it
I sprayed my sealer and it never hrdened. I mixed according to the tech sheet. But never got hard i didnt realize it and once the base and clear was on and dry i could get fingernail marks in the paint when it was hot but when it was cold (not in the sun) it was hard.... what did i do wrong? Im nervous to spray again that i will do the same thing and have to sand it all off again.
I am getting ready to buy some new guns, between Tekna prolite Iwata or Sata what would you recommend? i also am looking at some Sagola 4500 extreme, a lot of people rave about the Tekna guns. What do you like as far as the guns i mentioned? which are more reliable as well?
+Norbert H I haven't tried a sagola enough to say. My favorite guns right now are Matco MTHVLP14 for base with tekna basecoat. For clear iwata ws400 14HD
Depends on the product your spraying- for example HVLP does not work well with some base coats. (low Transfer) HVLP work well with "Coat Flash" type Base Coats cause they apply lighter and flash between coats quicker. They also help to control mottle and normally blend well. Some base coats are difficult to blend with RP guns. I use Sata 1.2 or DV 1.3 or base. DV wide open throttle, Sata turned in 1 1/2 turns cause it can be a hoser. I find Iwata is real nice for clear, you go rock with it also. With Clear, pick up your arm speed, 75% overlap at 38psi with the Iwata, its nice to layer it on as well. if your not happy then apply a quick lighter coat to melt it down a little flatter, In other words, get into a groove, sing a song in your head, don’t move away until your happy with what you see then continue on.. 1-1/2 - 2 turns in from full throttel. We rush at times, try to relax and enjoy applying the clear, watch every pass. Having your gun to far back (distance) with lead to texture as well. Best thing to do is to practise when spraying bumpers..Focus on Air Pressure, Distance from panel and arm speed! Each clear likes a certain set up and technic, once you find the right mixture, you will be impressed on a regular basis. In my humble opinion.
Yes it's a lot ha ha because I don't understand why such a professional as yourself would not completely mask theses cars. I cant believe your booth is that good that it takes all the overspray away before it has time to stick to the cars !
+David Thorpe you beloved right my friend!!! I would NOT DO SICH A THING 😊😊 we use spray liquid mask it's a solution that is sprayed on the car and it protects it from over spray😊
hahaha, I actually laughed out loud, Im sure he used Liquid Mask. Sorry for laughing, but I couldn't help it. It would be crazy not to be sure its covered, Some cover the area not to be painted with Liquid Mask, Plastic and 3 foot paper. Kinda depends on what you prefer. Cutting out plastic is getting popular
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS OK so I’m just prep sanding with 400 gt the Ecoat on OEM part…. So many Techniques I’m a bit lost. For Ecoat parts: Sand or scuff- wax remover- sealer-base -clear. No other sanding needed?

The CFM’s required are very different and did not notice until later. Husky needs 4.3 scfm, and the widow calls for 11 cfm!! will psi settings need to be different here? Only have a 30gal tank also, those extra cfms might be to much

Sealer fills the tiny pits and holes left over from sanding...and as the name indicates it seals the substrate...Good video

What you need to know is that sealer won't fix anything if there is peeling paint or stone chips or anything like that you need to fix them before you paint the car you can primer the whole car so in order to fix all the chips and stuff. That gun will do fine for Sealer base and clear

Will it hold up to the weather and what will it look like in 4 years? I don't know - but I'm gambling on it and painting a whole truck like this - no base-coat. There's nothing like it.
Peace to you and your family.

Can someone please post a link of the brand name of the sealer. Also, do you sprat it right of the can? do I still primer over the sealer and sand?
It's 3:1:1 here is the link ca.ppgrefinish.com/getdoc/89f065d5-fbb9-452c-843a-565e47ad1d5b/Envirobase-High-Performance.aspx

Well done.
Thank youuuu!!
I have to say I don't know the answer to that question 😣
What size air hose you use I got a 3/8 air hose now and air is leaking out it a little. Gonna take it back and get a 50 foot 1/2 air hose.
Great video! any links to buying this sealer?
You can't get it unless from a distributor we get it from finish master
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS Any other primer/sealer you recommend?
I haven't used any other ones to recommend
Gabriel. What's the best way to spray sealer on a hood? I can seem to get it to lay smooth on fenders, but can't seem to get it to lay smooth when I spray a hood. Using a Devillbiss starting line gun. I use that gun for base and now use a Tekna clearcoat gun for clear. You think i may need to spray sealer with my clearcoat gun?
you need a better base gun you are using a moped for base and a ferrari for clear
So what if solvent pop happens on sealer? How can i get rid of them sanding with 320 dry? What is recommended? Because i know it can happen messing up is some thing that can happen weather its on primer , sealer , clear coat , base coat you name it.
I have never experienced solvent pop on sealer but I would say you need to sand it until is gone
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS thanks for the help
Can you tint your sealer with the acrylic Paint Out of the mixing bank aswell?
+RAVE DAVE Nono not with ppg with axalta you can
Can you plz explain what do you mean by saying sealer as am not eng I dont really get it like I dont know is it a product or is it a part of the car..
And another question.can you ever apply a color over a wet clear coat then apply clear coat again and can you imagine what result you will get..
Thanks bro i enjoy your vids
Sealer is like primer but thinner and you can apply color without sanding. No you cannot out color on top of CLEAR
do you sand the sealer or not before putting basecoat? would be good to mention this, thanks
Nope if there is any big jobs I'll knock them down with some 800 but I don't isual sand sealer
Hello new to your channal I will be using wet on wet or (sealer) I am getting confused between hb wet on wet and non hb wet on wet the 1 I have brought seems to be hb 6:1 ratio I just wanted to spray 1 thin coat
by the way I am a first time user for wet on wet thank you fo the video
How long before you get more of the green blowers? Im trying to get a couple of them for Christmas for myself and a friend
+Robert Copeland I'm trying my best to get better quality ones 😊😊😊
+Robert Copeland keep am eye out!!!
Any reason you use the ECS6x vs the ECS2x series? I find the 20series to be way nicer than the 60
+Michael Bullock honestly that's what was brought here when we switched haha and since I didn't know anything about ppg I didn't know there was anything else haha I'm going to ask about it, thanks man!!
So this is basically wet on wet primer? We don’t use “sealer” in the uk but wet on wet primer does the same job ?
Basically but thinner
Great video and good explanation 👌🏼
Thank you!
I was painting outside a lot too so that is different than painting in a garage.
an expert painter can do ok with a cheap gun not a beginner get an flg5 at least you will get much better paint ideal for diy guys and I always use sealer cheaper than the extra paint you have to get without it
@@les1ed yes I didn't use sealer on the car this time though.
Good video im learning a lot from you ! thanks so much !
Awesome!!
Hi what camera are you using on your head to film this please ? Thanks
The sealer is white..normaly its transparent? Great class awesome..cuidate mucho.
+Dimitri Dam we have white, grey and dark dark grey and they can be mixed. One coat usually do it and your good to go
You might be thinking of adhesion promoter for raw plastic. That is usually transparent or sometimes transparent with tiny metallics
Chris i think he Think at translucent fillsealer for unsanded surfaces (cars CV)
We normaly use wet on wet fillprimer for new parts ....
Can sealer be sanded if trash gets on it
Yes absolutely just give it some flash time like 10 mins
I am getting ready to buy some new guns, between Tekna prolite Iwata or Sata what would you recommend? i also am looking at some Sagola 4500 extreme, a lot of people rave about the Tekna guns. What do you like as far as the guns i mentioned? which are more reliable as well?
+Norbert H I haven't tried a sagola enough to say. My favorite guns right now are Matco MTHVLP14 for base with tekna basecoat. For clear iwata ws400 14HD
I have the WS400 but with 1,5HD never try it yet, you think it is OK for clear or to big? Sata 1,3 is bigger than the 1,5 iwata, what is your opinion?
+Norbert H 15hd I have heard good things about it!!! Try it out just move faster
What temp do you spray at? Iget sags sometimes when spraying white sealer using same hardner as you did but 885 reducer I spray at 85 degrees
+Steven VanVliet I sprayed at 75 just try moving a bit faster
Two cars I've seen you do now with out masking them up completely !!!!!!!
+David Thorpe haha that's a lot of exclamation marks 😊 so what you think about this?
Cutting out plastic is getting popular
what tip/needle size do you for sealers or primers?
1.3 for sealers 1.5 for primer s
Do they have different color sealers for different colors. So use less paint to get coverage?
+Matt Calay different shades of white grey black
Do you use clearcoat sealer too and basecoat I never used sealer or paint blender.
Sealer is like primer I have never seen clear cost sealer
SORRY ,I,VE AN ASK TO YOU ,CAN WE UNTERSTAND IT SUCH .
IT SEALER =PRIMER OR WHAT DIFFERENT.
Where can I get that door stand?
Innovative tools it's cakled
I Thought you have to sand sealer prior to bass with 400? No? Still learning
Nope it's wet on wet
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS
OK so I’m just prep sanding with 400 gt the Ecoat on OEM part…. So many Techniques I’m a bit lost.
For Ecoat parts:
Sand or scuff- wax remover- sealer-base -clear. No other sanding needed?
@@MOTIVATEDPAINTERS
I’ve been gathering all the equipment to get this done, I’m now ready, but took forever to set up booth and proper air lines/ filters/fitting etc…I have 3 new guns, not sure witch to use for what…
2 Husky composite hvlp-$100 each, and a black widow compliant gun-$250. The CFM’s required are very different and did not notice until later. Husky needs 4.3 scfm, and the widow calls for 11 cfm!! will psi settings need to be different here? Only have a 30gal tank also, those extra cfms might be to much
So do you put primer on first before you put primer sealer on.
If you primer you don't need to seal. But in new parts you can just seal and paint
What color primer sealer for bright silver metallic do you use.
White of g5
i like what you said. MrFireman164 turned me on to your videos. i'll be watching more. thanks Robert
WoW I'm honored man ! Thank you !!!!!
Hi gabriel do you i see that your primer are already the same color as your seale do you used sealer as primer or do you order a special primer
If the work is light yes
I get over spray with sealer any way to prevent this from happening?
Thank you primo
Using a basecoat gun for sealer ?
Yup
Do you need a sealer if you have sanded a 2k primer to 600 and youre going to paint black on top of the black 2k primer?
Nope
Even if I have some small cut throughs to slick sand? I have just a couple small spots where it broke through.
It should be okay just go light on your fist coats of base
