    I've been getting into, automotive paint lately. I used color over etching primer.
    The top coat ended up cracking/splitting.
    Lesson learned, going to pick up some primer sealer.

    Thanks for the video Donnie. I have heard other channels recommend spraying metallic with all the body panels in place on the car, but with my truck project I'd rather spray with them on stands, good to know if you orient them properly you can spray them off the vehicle.

    I have a Cherokee I am working on that already has a very good amount of grey sealer. The Jeep was originally white and I am 4 wheeling it so I don't want to paint. What's your thoughts on going over searler with a satin clear to run it that way for a year or two?

    Great video! i have a question though as i am going to respray my 1969 ford mustang boss 302. What grit of sand paper did you use, and after you sanded it, did you spray the primer sealer, or something else. Just asking because it looks like surface primer your spraying over. if you are please let me know, thank you.

    Newbie question here...
    I bought 5star #5451 highbuild 2k primer and realized I may hit some metal seeing that prior owner used mystery paint and looks like he hand rolled the paint on haha. I’ve seen the prices of some etching primers and I’ve seen some $20 SEM or Upol aerosal self etching primers. Can I use aerosal self etching primer on exposed metal and then spray my urethane primer? Will it react and mess everything up?

    1. how do you prep porcelain and what kind of primer oy use on it? like sinks
    2. instead of apply primer surfacer or epoxy primer can you just use primer sealer just incase you dont have to time to do all that block sanding on primer surfacer?
    bye the way your excellent teacher you explain well

  • @nwrob1
    @nwrob1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent clear instruction. I'm doing my first nut and bolt restoration, and have decided to epoxy powdercoat-prime the body tub, inside and out. The factory topcoat was applied to every visible surface. How best to prepare all the small cavities and double metal areas at the interior of rear fender areas, etc? I assume the epoxy will get pretty much everywhere. After a skuff sand, would a sealer applied with a detail gun in all those tight areas be a decent prep for a single stage topcoat? Most of this will not show. Thx!

    • @CarAddictGarage
      @CarAddictGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      If it is scuffed then the epoxy should adhere fine. I would spray the topcoat straight on top of the epoxy within the window you brand has. If you wait longer you may have to rescuff before top coating. Most epoxy has a 3 day window, but read the can to make sure on the brand that you are using.

    • @Z-Ack
      @Z-Ack 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your regular base coat is not a primer paint. Its a base coat.. you want an etcher, then sealer then base coat.. theres no cutting corners in a good paint job.. but the simplest one are the single layers...

    I love your videos and seen a couple on this subject. But I am still confused by a 2k sealer primer and 2k high build primer. I know there is polyester leveling/filler primer for block sanding. But if a sealer is used what step would it be. So Would go
    1st Epoxy or selfetch
    2nd polyester if used to level
    3rd 2k surface high build primer
    4th Primer sealer
    5th Basecoats
    6th clear coat?
    What am I missing?

    • @darkhalfz3736
      @darkhalfz3736 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re not missing anything. Step two is not necessary. Block sanding the primer is enough

    So I was tossing the idea around of clear coat over a primer sealer 🤔 the gray is what I'm wanting and the sealer isn't porous so what would be the issue??

  • @Z-Ack
    @Z-Ack 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought primer sealer just stopped the top coat from soaking into the primer coat.... but yea its to make everything uniform as well as filler is used for...

  • @zanaga1901
    @zanaga1901 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So first you can put regular primer then after you apply the regular primer you apply primer sealer over that. I never used primer sealer. I don't even get how to do the whole paint process right. I know about guide coat I have that. I wanna know from start to finish. From from before primer prep to primer, primer sealer, and all steps because this stuff is newer to me. I always used regular primer, then went to paint then clearcoat last. I used guide coat some now. This auto painting stuff is kind of difficult to me I messed up multiple times on my truck already.

    • @CarAddictGarage

      There are primer sealers that are not epoxy, but most epoxy primer can be mixed by adding more reducer and used as a primer sealer.

    Great video. I have a couple of questions. I am restoring a 1954 Dodge Fargo and the paint is 65 years old. now I have done some body work and there is more to do. When it comes to paint the truck do I prime the entire truck because there is primer, old paint and bare metal. I have no idea what kind of paint was used in 1954. Oh, by the way, I am painting it flat black. Not Hot Rod Black. I don't like the finish. It is too shiny. So I am trying to find some other paint that is duller. Any ideas??? Another thing, Flash time is very confusing. Now say it takes 30 minutes or so to spray a set of doors and fenders. When does flash time start??. Say I started fender # one, 30 minutes ago. I am past my flash time on my first fender and ahead of me flash time on another. So when does flash time start. Does it start when the first fender is done, or when the last door is done 30 minutes later??? I am not being a smart ASS, I want to know because I have my truck to paint and I don't want to screw it up and have to do it twice. It is too costly. Thanks for sharing.
