I really appreciate your videos and your tenacity in going after solutions to problems. A lot of people blame the paint, their equipment, the booth, etc ... instead of asking themselves what they could do differently. Thank you again for what you do and God bless you.
i know this is an old video but heck there’s always something new to learn & what i use is tape to remove any dust particles after its been cleaned with wax & grease remover. i learned this trick from a painter were i used to work at a chevy body shop. i use geckotape to stick & remove it for the whole work surface & it doesn’t cause static. just make a circle with the sticky side out & use the palm of your hand. hope this helps now 3 years later lol
Painting in 110+ degrees year around I always get a sandiness in my basecoat at the edge of the repair. After covering the primer I let it flash and then have to wet sand with 800 and then lay down my "finish" coat to get my metallics perfect. After that smash on the clear so you can see your reflection. Done.
Luis De Leon have you ever tried putting a " wet bed" down? in ppgs water I always put a wet bed of t490 reduced at 20 percent not only for metalilics to stick to but also to fill sand scrarch.
@@alyssiachambers6807I always finish with 800 blends, 600 primer, not really any sand scratches. I try not to wet bed if I don't have to, we get a lot of trash booth needs new seal. Have to sand the wetbed lol.
Gabe, you just can't say enough good things about your results. That's why I enjoy your videos. It's a pleasure watching and learning. Thanks for another great video. Take care.
Quick tip for the dirt issue. Try back taping the wheel wells and applying the paper as smooth as possible to the exposed backtape. Cut with a blade around the wheel well. Now you have no gap between the car body and wheel for dirt to come out of.
After a good blow with decent pressure and a couple tacks, an old Italian guy taught me to wash the vehicle with clean, warm water and a good dust free rag . Soak rag, then ring out so it's not dripping, but still good and wet. allow to dry and start spraying. I remembered to try this again recently on a complete black mustang. It came out very clean and I think it was from the old guys trick. Kills the static, Static guns are becoming more affordable and work very well on all surfaces.
Yes, you can wipe down last with a waterbased cleaner ( I make my own with water and iso alcohol) they charge $30-90 a gal for the same thing you can make for 25 cents! It kills the static, works great on raw plastic bumpers as last wipe. I do waterbased then wax and grease remover on most things. Then waterbase again on anything plastic or raw. Try that! Mix your own water cleaner!
I've found 2 medium wet coats and a third medium coat helps with the blotchiness. I back the gun off a bit on that third coat. Then double control coat it and clear. A wet bed also makes it easier to lay the metallics down right.
I use axalta chromabase and to combat motteling and sand-up edges is I mix 40% 175k to 60% 69301s basecoat blender to make a "wet bed" in the blend areas. I also use the absolutely slowest reducer I can get away with for the ambient temperature. It makes the drop coats and blends lay right down with out sand pile up. I will also increase the spray distance and lower my pressure so the basecoat wont dry in the air before it hits the panel. I get drop coats and blends down easier In the winter time when I can actually increase drop coat pressure as the substrate is colder in general.
I used to have trouble with sand piling, until I started using blending clear before first coat of paint, and blending clear before every coat of base.Blending clear allows the dry spray to melt when it hits the sides.
what works for me without having to light sand again, i used sealer before anything and then i use super slow reducer on ppg paint when i am doing a metallic with iwata psi 25. Then i put two light coats of DBC 500 mixed 1-1-1 with paint and reducer.
Nice videos. I'm currently struggling with my silver Honda Accord.im getting zebra stripes even if my coats are perfect 50% overlap. Your videos are the reason my skill has got better.
I Noticed you are basing right on top of the primer! No sealer is needed? I like this because this is how I sprayed my Solvent based Axalta. Didnt know you can do this with Water
Gabriel, first off congratulations on using triggering instead of flicking the gun. As well as not getting the overspray problem it also solves panel edge build up. As for the dirt problem I have found that after the cleaning and blow off redo the blow off with the gun as if you are painting the car. The gun drags shit out of places the blowing doesn't which is why it comes out in our paintwork, so if you tack while fake painting it finds that shit before hand. At 64 years old it's the best thing I ever found for clean work and wish I had found it earlier in my career 🤪
Cover the rest of the car in plastic too. I know you use spray mask but you would be surprised how much dirt is still there that will end up in the air in the booth.
But doesn't the spray mask trap all that dirt down? Or you mean like all the dirt in the cracks that are exposed? At that point I wouldn't even use spray mask then. I mean he does have some of the cleanest jobs I've seen.
matt wist I almost lost in when I saw the whole car isn’t covered and he’s doing a whole side. Let’s talk about the overspray on that uncovered side. Oooof
Gabriel. Another informative video. Question, have you ever had a silver or gold look great, no mottling or cloudyness. Then you clear it, and it almost seems like the clear moves the metallics? Had this happen on wa636R last week.
Michael Bullock Ive had that happen to me before... Try letting the base flash off longer, and dont put the first coat of clear on so heavy... These 2 things will ensure the metallics dont shift on you
I had that problem with modeling i always use a milky looking basemaker 5 star makes or sherwin williams has whats called a stabilizer.one stabilizer even has a hardner in it Soon as it hits the panel It sticks .i never had an issue with my silver or golds anymore .
La aplicación del color para la mano de control es la misma o agregas más solvente o (agua) si es pintura al agua para adelgazarla más y a que presión la aplicas???

Gabriel Merino, do you think that, in the future, it will ever be possible to avoid blending the paint in the adjacent panels? Do you think that this is already possible using the Glasurit Ratio Scan 12/6?
I have a question I got my door painted and top of the door handle looks super smooth and shiny.I could tell they removed a run. They refuse to paint saying it is acceptable.I called insurance company waiting for a response.Do you repaint when there is a run or sand?.
Hey really good video as always. Love the tips for the base...but do you think it would work on solvent based paints too. Like with the temp and the thinning down part. I sometimes get mottling in colours like these but not silvers. Lol.
i tried controlled coat in my metallic gray and it came out nice.. thanks sir, for the tip. is this will work also on colors like candy red and candy blue?
candy does not have a control coat. The silver or gold under it will. Candy is usually non metallic and goes over a metallic color. Three stage job like a pearl job but harder and more coats. I did a bike candy flame job that won World of Wheels car show.
Great vids as always, I spray solvent based through an Iwata lph 400 , says 16-18 psi is preferable but that sprays sooo slowly and I notice you move quickly is that the difference between solvent and water based paint or no ?
I use same gun, you want 2.0 bar or around 29 psi for base, I bump it up to about 33-35 for clear. It is a slow moving gun compared to a Sata, which will sling some paint!
Julian Bacchus. 1.4 is nice with the iwata because it allows you to move so much faster also he's spraying at quite high psi which will break the droplets up so small it's a win win. Especially if you're painting in a dry or hot area 👌🏻
Thats what I mean? Never noticed the dark spot on lighter blues and silvers? Especially 1f7. A point of selling when it comes to the walcom heated air unit
