Thanks for the tips ... I owned a BA 12 years ago and am picking up a BF wagon tomorrow which I will go over changing oil , filters , spark plugs , brakes etc . I had to laugh at the dreaded number 6 spark plug ... Try changing number 6 on a Nissan Navara with a VG30E engine then you will see what a real shit fight is . Makes changing the Barra plugs look like a walk in the park..
From what I've seen the consensus in these seems to be to stay original, and they're not terribly expensive with a good service life so that's what I've done. I have used NGK in earlier SOHC engines though and had no problems but never with huge power anyway, and never in a Barra.
@@BrowneysGarage Idk, BFs (xr6 190 barra) can make around 170kw on 98 stock, I reckon with your exhaust systems, intake and underdrive you got a good chance to get around 190 with a tune... guess it depends where you base power was before the mods, I'm not sure what power BAs make stock
@Alex Fawke Depends big time on the gearbox too, for reference a stock BA with the BTR auto on their dyno makes around 140kw. Then they reckon add another 15 or so if manual or ZF. It’ll be covered in the video but you’re right, the BA will be the base and give people a good indication of what’s possible and then add on top of that figure BF and onwards 👍
Sadly it is. I know the figure already so not much fun in that, trying to get ahead in videos! But I’m fairly happy with how it all went, car is feeling great for what it is.
Loving the series man, ive been learning so much, currently in the process of putting extractors on my ba wagon thanks to your videos, its a peice of cake. cheers!
Thanks mate, that’s the biggest compliment you can pay me. Love hearing from people giving it a go, good luck and hope you enjoy the results. Oh and just remember, things go wrong for even pro mechanics (which I’m certainly not) you just get better at sorting it out!
5th Gear was a great show... didn't quite have the polish of Top Gear but at least they had a host that knew how to drive. Your BA is coming along great Brownie, I've been fixing mine up a bit too (with the help of your videos). I'm keeping it pretty much stock though, just fixing broken stuff and doing some prevention on the known issues. Every time I hear yours though it makes me want to do that muffler upgrade. It sounds great.
I never got into it but I should really give it another chance. And don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll have to get back to fixing something on it soon! Thanks mate.
@@BrowneysGarage The main presenter was Tiff Needell, he's a funny dude and top class race driver so it was fun seeing him be able to thrash super cars around. He was kind of like an old school Chris Harris.
Truth be told I enjoy seeing some of the top end cars and drivers but I struggle to relate to it, probably why I watched more Top Gear with the cheap car challenges and fellow ‘buffoons’! 🤣
@@BrowneysGarage lol, yeah. Me too man, I hear you. With 5th gear it was just fun seeing a "car reporter" who actually knew what he was talking about talk some shit about the super cars that most of us can't afford.
@@BrowneysGarage yeah affirmative mate the gauges above the radio. I've been enjoying watching the falcon xr6 mods videos. Look forward to seeing the results of the dyno run
Browney's Garage my Windsor runs one. But my Barra has some bloody Z235 or something. It’s half the size. Cheers bloke. Great channel. Keep on Truckin.
Great video Browney! Some good tips in there too. I don't remember seeing the mileage on your car so my power guess isn't going to be an informed one. So I'd say, at the wheels, about 140-150kw. I won't be disappointed if it's higher. Good luck.
Kms didnt mean anything for my fg. My Na fg with the ZF at 390k kms dynoed at 148rwkw stock which is pretty much the same as all the fg xr6s make even with low kms.
Nice power! And definitely a fair point, doesn’t always mean something if looked after and in good nic I guess, sure there’s plenty at those kms that may be getting tired as well though so you’ve done well. I certainly have nothing against higher km cars mate don’t worry 👍
@@BrowneysGarage Yeh well mine has had 8k kms intervals on fully synthetic and ZF services every 50k kms which is probably the main reason everything is perfectly healthy.

It's like new almost..ks aren't the problem...it's the kind of life it had, how hard those k's are driven. Luckily it's a Barra, alot of other cars 300+ is likely a problem..
i must say browney, i have a na mk2 fairmont ghia, have had it flashed tuned from a map written by max performance on a bf xr6, did stuff all, leaned it out a bit up top, best thing you can do is diff gears.I put some 3.45 diff gears with a tru trac in mine and it goes a lot harder off the line, only now deciding to go turbo, still on my ps so have to keep it stealthy
Videos are a touch behind, sorry you felt that way but I’d say I definitely picked up a bit with the tune. 4 speed or 6 speed? I’ve got 3.45 already and could really use 3.7 at least with the BTR if I was concerned about drags or traffic light stuff.
@Lachlan Burns Never know, it could all be in my head! Results at the strip should show improvements though, and it’s definitely fun to drive on the street as long as I’m not launching it. 3.45 and ZF would be fun
Hey mate, I believe it was this one I picked up. Quality isn’t perfect but it seems solid enough and the price was good. www.ebay.com.au/itm/232178108929
Brownie I need to get my FG NA tuned soon too. I’ve done pretty much all the mods you I have except the shift kit. Where should I take my car to get tuned? I called some places and they said it’s not worth touching because it isn’t turbo (assholes) 😤
Wow really! Shops like that don’t deserve your money mate, it’s not going to pick up quite like a turbo but there’s definitely gains to be had. Depends where you are but I’ve gone to Maxx Performance in Dandenong and been really happy with it so far (this video is a few weeks behind 🤫). The only negative, and it isn’t much at all, is they’re pretty flat out so be sure to factor in a full day out there even if they hope to get it done earlier.
@Frosty XR6 Bugger, I’m not going to be able to vouch for anyone out there but maybe try one of the shops listed on PCMTec’s site? www.pcmtec.com/workshops
Been awesome watching these videos! Just finished doing the full exhaust, upper and lower control arms (absolute bastard of a job), struts and rocker cover gasket on my ba 1 tonner.

Pully system Tune and dyno I have a 2013 fg xr6 ute running 195kw stock. I made 246kw at the motor So around 215-220 at the wheels.
Thanks mate. The coils should have a pretty long service life and, while not a huge expense, still aren't nearly as cheap as a set of plugs at $150 odd I believe. Wouldn't be the first time a new coil has come faulty and caused it's own issues so I elected for a 'if it's not broken, don't fix it' approach on those. Each to their own though, not the worst idea to do these while you're in there.
Given the length of time spark plugs, especially iridium plugs stay in place, I like to use a high temperature anti seize grease on the threads. You'll always be able to get them out again.
I'd guess that there is no harm in doing that if done right, and in fact I was going to do exactly that until I looked into it. A lot of the plugs, from what I've since read, are made with a coating already to act exactly as an anti seize would and actually advise against using a further anti seize. Doubt there's any big factor against using anti seize as well other than it not being necessary and some say it will affect torque readings/feel but how many people 'torque' spark plugs anyway! I could still be very wrong though...
Nice rolla big fella ... sweet
