I know this might get buried in the comments, but why not build a kit car type thing and stick this engine in it?? From the floor up, brakes, steering, electrical systems etc...make it lightweight to get the most out of the power. Lotus 7 or caterham.
I was going to reply with the same answer - the 818 looks like a fun project. I believe you need more from the donor WRX, though - brakes, harness, transmission, wheels, steering rack, etc.
@@001slick001 I'm honestly sad they discontinued it. I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a donor car but then I found out that they weren't continuing production.
It is soooo good to see you back on track, Davin! I was totally deperate and watched several rebuild videos (not only the time lapse videos, but the whole stories!) because I just miss a good rebuild video on a weekly base so much. Please rebuld another old lump of American cast iron. It is so interesting to see the old engines running smoothly after your cure. Greets from Germany! Alex
A racy BMW I6 would make for a super cool project, something like an S38 or an M88. Probably also a nightmare but I would watch those videos over and over
*Hello Ben!* Davin, whatever you're doing with this show, I'll be here as long as you are. I've been a Hagerty insurance customer for many years now, but you and Tom are why I started watching and subscribing to their YT channel - and remain so today. Heck, Ben even was kind enough to contact me recently, which is something rarely seen from production companies of stuff on here, so props to him and the crew as well. Stellar content, presented by great hosts, professionally produced. - Ed on the Ridge
That was hilarious Davin when you hit the ignition cylinder with a pipe wrench. Savage, but I like it. Personally, I would not use a fram filter on a lawn tractor. I use only WIX.
Oddly enough, the lawn tractor might be where Fram is the better filter than you suspect. Its really hit or miss with Fram, but check this out just so you're aware. watch?v=BALoiHotB-I
Davin, Ben and Co. Where you at? Hoping the hiatus is for a big reveal on some projects you got! Going to be gutted if I can't get my fix of Redline Rebuilds. Keep it going guys!
I have always loved engines and been fascinated how they work, these videos are absolutely blissful to watch. Such skill and passion for doing a good job. It doesn’t get better than this, a fan from the UK
You guys should do more videos in regards to what’s happening in the shop with body restorations! We love seeing both engine rebuild and the progress with what the rest of the shop is doing
My personal favorite rebuild you have done so far, was the beautiful Buick straight eight. As for the Mini, my brother and I were both stationed in England. He used to say the early Minis were water soluble. Every time it rained; another part fell off!
That crank align hone is a special thing on this series of engines. I got lucky and there was a shop in Fresno who did it using a special jig they made and a special set of stones afixed to a lathe. It was wild to see. They were also the only shop within 250 miles of me who had the narrow stones to do the main and rod journals. Wild stuff.
Thanks for the comment on Fram oil filters. I've been changing my own oil for 42 years now and have never used anything but Fram filters. Now with 2 sons driving, I do 4 cars a year. That's a lot of filters.
To line bore these you mount the block onto the carriage of a lathe install a bar with a bit in it on centers square the tail stock. Then you run the power feed to advance the carriage and make your cut
Over the last year I built a Stage 1 Subaru engine supporting mods around the car, cost me around $25,000. "Money, it's what makes Subaru a Subaru" is my new slogan for them.
Hey did i miss an episode? Last I saw the 440 was getting cleaned up to get its cylinders punched! Also super excited because my buddy and I just got our hands on a 440 block for our first project car which is a 71 Plymouth Roadrunner
Hagerty, can you PLEASE consider another series on metal work!!! All these series are fantastic especially since Larry Chen came on!! of course Davin is great.. I think it would be amazing to have a metal work type series added as well. It's becoming such a lost art / skill!!
If you were amazed at the oil filter debate by the forum warriors, wait til you talk about oil brand and weight for the EJ motors. Also, a miata with the EJ build would be fun. You can even cap off the front output for the transmission and keep it RWD or do an AWD miata.
Mate, love your work. Great rationale and explanation on the Subaru. Good to see the Brick (Mini) is getting a full resto. Got a soft spot for them. Regards from Downunder.
I had a couple orange frams come apart internally and all the filter material ended up stuck to one side. Basically not filtering anything which was concerning. Locally I can get frams, wix, and Baldwin, so I use any that aren't orange frams.
Please put this engine in a 818. It's a kit car by Factory Five Racing and there's quite a few unfinished kits for sale that people have never finished.
The FRAM debate comes from opening the filters and seeing what the inside cartridge. Personally I wouldn't use them either, their insides are ridiculously lower quality than anything else you can buy... I even made a video about them on my channel
Engine cost, well I am building a gen 2 small block Chevy LT1. Except for machine work on the block ( the only stock piece on this build ) I do all the work. So, what is the machine shop and parts build total? how about $9,000. And this is a mild build of about 450 horse power.
😅 Subaru oil filters are a cheap Fram painted blue for anyone having a fit. Yes I run them in my close deck. But I change my oil a looot at my power level
Check out Subi-Performance channel on TH-cam out of Germany. He uses a hand reaming operation on the mains. A long rod with centering cones on either end .
Loved what you did with the Subaru motor..... Absolutely loved it. Theres always die hard trolls out there..... Let em go. In the Mean time its you who theyre watching aint it ? Ill take your lead in it.
Would be cool if we could watch them rebuilding the cars in the other shop (mini, Cadillac) why don't they have a channel? I'm assuming they are Hagarty cars.
hey im going to school for carpentry and the motor on my 1985 ford ranger xlt is giving me a headache and a half, and its hard to be a carpenter without a truck. i know this is probably a joke, but what if you swapped the 2.8l for that

Factory 5 racing makes a kit car that take a Subaru power train call the 818.

Are you guys still doing redline rebuilds? I miss seeing them.
In the southwest we see lots of Subaru engines in sand rails. Would be really sweet to see a buggy or something built around the EJ build
Davin was the only thing keeping me subscribed to this channel...
