Say what you will about the prequels, but Palpatine’s perfectly executed plot is genius. Playing both sides of the Separatist war to conjure devastating instability, then presenting himself as a heroic and trusted solution, security incarnate. Most of the galaxy gratefully laid down their freedom and independence.

I was comparing that the same way Palpatine (aka the senate) caused the separatist war despite the death and destruction it brought to the galaxy (because so the people would gladly take it as he strips them of their rights, because of "greater good") and then presented himself as the only solution, our government inflated numbers, took away civil liberties, killed the economy, shut down businesses, sent thousands into poverty, and etc, also for "the greater good". And it was so damn good, that people are still buying that BS today, when the consequences of such measures are happening right in front of them. My favorite character in the series. However, I wish they gave him more depth. While people lust for power, I believe most people do have some ideology. Instead just for personal power, he could be actually fighting for the unity, security and prosperity of the galaxy. He was too much a bad guy in the movies unfortunately. Would be nice if he was kind of a mix of the 40K emperor and SW emperor. Kind of like Leto II in Dune.

The Jedi started the war. Sure Palpatine planned it - but they had every chance to foil his plans by just not going for it. But in the end there was not a second of hesitation to use their new slave army. Not one second. When Valorum was replaced it seemed easy enough to get rid of a corrupt chancellor. No, lets be real: Saying „Palpatine planned it all, he is at fault“ is just as much an oversimplification. Just consider how we would look at these „peacekeepers“ nowadays. Would we allow our police to employ an army and participate in a war? Would we allow them to take the law in their hands and assassinate a head of state without trial? No. Surely not. The sith were the personal enemies of the jedi order, not the enemies of the galaxy. Most citizens didnt give a f*ck about the dark or light side of the force. And for many life under the empire wasnt really worse than life under the republic. Lets not forget the separatists had very valid reasons to secede. Corruption, mismanagement, inequality, etc ran rampant under the republic. The jedi should have been on their side just as much as on the republics side. Yet the jedi had no qualms sacrificing half the galaxies populace for their stupid crusade against dooku.

Good & evil only really meant things to force wielders, the Jedi and Sith saw the black and white nature/physics of the universe through the Light and Dark sides of the force. Normal everyday people didn't see the world like that and even often dismissed this viewpoint as myth or fairytale, same as their denial in the Force.

+matty9460 I'm honestly very conflicted on this. His Emperor voice seemed a bit over-acted compared to his performance in ROTJ, which seemed much more slimy and sinister. Maybe it was an intentional choice because this is supposed to be Palpatine 20 years younger? Or perhaps Ian's voice hasn't aged well and he couldn't quite pull off the same qualities of ROTJ. In any case, I found his emperor act to be... "too much" at times.

ROTS (holy shit I just realized the initials mirroring each other) was him acting like he was following the best interests of the Republic. Look at how he talks to Anakin when he turns. That's much closer to how the real Sidious sounds like.

I mean if you want to mention the Robes keep in mind that Palpatine was known as a collector or fine art and ancient artifacts (heck he has a mural depicting one of the biggest Events in Legends in his office the Hyper space war) So him also having ancient Sith Robes really doesn't seam to out of place.

Yep, I’ve been stimming the line “and the republic will be reorganized into the first galactic Empire!” For weeks. Star Wars is apparently one of my dad’s favorite franchises and he just never looked at the metaphors it seems. It’s always been about American fascism and how democracy falls. “So this is how Liberty dies, with thunderous applause,” and basically everyone around me is just cheering Palpatine on after a shard of glass nicked his ear, sorry I said Palpatine, I meant trump. He's run a perfect god damn game for nearly 40 ish years and he's set to do a victory lap for another 20 as the emperor. I was thinking, if palpatine were to actually run in the real world most likely he would be republican, and it's kind of fitting you say feeling patriotic for the empire, because he is convinced everyone that he's the most patriotic and that he's fighting for everyone, when in turn he's the one that is causing and bringing about fascism and dictatorship rule. which is kind of along the ideology of what modern day Republicans would like to have, a Dominionist theocratic fascist society, all while believing that they are the most patriotic.

+Ira ProV I don't think you really noticed this but I went pretty in depth in to what Palps was saying there, on top of that I've seen the film about 20 times as a younger version of my myself. What would be ignorant would be to never give these films the fair trial they deserve, It would also be ignorant to completely ignore the central plot to a film which unfortunately these films don't have and finally it would be incredibly ignorant to basically come and call me ignorant based on an in-depth analysis that I made. Sorry but I can't help but laugh in this scene, sure its one of the stronger points of the plot in Episode 3 but this is really crappy dialogue, thats fact not an opinion.

As for the prequels, I've never actually met fans disparaging them for the politics as much as for some stilted acting, some - wait ONE VERY STUPID CHARACTER and a couple other problems that are actually consistent with a cinematographical point of view, but I agree that if politics is the reason one doesn't like the prequels... tough shit buddy, it's all quite riveting stuff. Again, from a cinematographic view point, I think. It's got its reasons and it's well done, even superb at times. Padme's line is a fuckin' classic in my humble opinion. They used (and have always used actually) a cool escapist action franchise to pointedly comment on very real sociopolitical forces/movements that are not going away anytime soon, really. If that's not brilliant I don't know what to tell the disgruntled fans.

@@roswynn5484 The main issue is that the scripts were slapped together by George Lucas without much outside input or criticism. He wrote the script like it was a book, and tried to translate it to screen without really understanding how story-telling in movies works. The result is a story that's epic on paper and in concept, but just really boring to actually watch.
@@dancegod1691 Okay, yeah, I can get behind that. I agree they can often be boring, sometimes the writing is mediocre and the directing isn't much better. In particular I find the plots a bit convoluted sometimes, and the character of Anakin most of the time has very badly written dialogue, with Hayden Christensen doing a half-hearted job.

With a single speech, not only did he make the Jedi a menace to be exterminated, he declared an Imperial regime. Here's the thing, they'd usually not applaud this sort of thing, but the plan is actually very clever, he gradually reduced the balance of power during wartime in the excuse that such reductions were vital. That's some brutal political manipulation, I think that Emperor Palpatine provided a very interesting villain. In the end, you can still tell what his real goals are. In the end, both the Separatists and Republic planets alike were merely gears in a very large and sinister game.

He has such a command of the dark side over everyone, he knows he has every single one of them. He did every bit of that while appearing completely innocent
But how many in the senate even know how to recognise a Sith? Out of those how many were already bribed behind the scenes by Palpatine? Sure we as Star Wars fans know a Sith has yellow eyes and that he's wearing the same clothes he dons in holograms when communicating as Sidious. But do the characters at large know enough to recognise traditional Sith robes? A outfit doesn't automatically make you a criminal. Everyone would have to know it's exclusive to Sith to find an issue with it. More importantly how much info does the Senate have available on the situation in general? The Jedi know there's a Sith trying to get control, but how much of the Senate know that as well (that didn't already agree to help him behind closed doors)? As far as the universe is concerned the only Sith they know is a Sith for certain is Count Dooku and possibly his apprentice Ventress. Then out of those that do know.... how many are too afraid to oppose it? From the Senates perspective Sith might as well be Jedi when it comes to dealing with them. They're both force wielders with lightsabers to defend themselves. If they would consider standing up against a Jedi to be suicide, then it'd be even more so to oppose a Sith who isn't going to hold back on murdering you. Ultimately, if no one is verbalising that he's a Sith then people are probably going to pretend they're unaware of that even if they know. There usually is a peer pressure when it comes to groups to avoid appearing foolish by admitting you know something or don't know something if you think it'd be scoffed at by your peers.

And you can say Palpatine orchestrated the wars (which is perfectly true), but in the end he was only able to do so because he knew the jedi order would jump at the opportunity to fight an intergalactic war and sacrifice millions to kill a sith.
The Jedi started the war. Sure Palpatine planned it - but they had every chance to foil his plans by just not going for it. But in the end there was not a second of hesitation to use their new slave army. Not one second.
Sure Palpatine had control over the senate - but its not like the jedi even made the slightest attempt to find a legal solution. When Valorum was replaced it seemed easy enough to get rid of a corrupt chancellor.
No, lets be real: Saying „Palpatine planned it all, he is at fault“ is just as much an oversimplification.
Just consider how we would look at these „peacekeepers“ nowadays. Would we allow our police to employ an army and participate in a war? Would we allow them to take the law in their hands and assassinate a head of state without trial? No. Surely not.
And thats considering their goals were just and they did it with the best intentions in mind.
But arguably thats not the case. The sith were the personal enemies of the jedi order, not the enemies of the galaxy. Most citizens didnt give a f*ck about the dark or light side of the force. And for many life under the empire wasnt really worse than life under the republic.
Lets not forget the separatists had very valid reasons to secede. Corruption, mismanagement, inequality, etc ran rampant under the republic. The jedi should have been on their side just as much as on the republics side. Yet the jedi had no qualms sacrificing half the galaxies populace for their stupid crusade against dooku.

+matty9460 I'm honestly very conflicted on this. His Emperor voice seemed a bit over-acted compared to his performance in ROTJ, which seemed much more slimy and sinister. Maybe it was an intentional choice because this is supposed to be Palpatine 20 years younger? Or perhaps Ian's voice hasn't aged well and he couldn't quite pull off the same qualities of ROTJ. In any case, I found his emperor act to be... "too much" at times.

ROTS (holy shit I just realized the initials mirroring each other) was him acting like he was following the best interests of the Republic. Look at how he talks to Anakin when he turns. That's much closer to how the real Sidious sounds like.

What would be ignorant would be to never give these films the fair trial they deserve, It would also be ignorant to completely ignore the central plot to a film which unfortunately these films don't have and finally it would be incredibly ignorant to basically come and call me ignorant based on an in-depth analysis that I made. As for the prequels, I've never actually met fans disparaging them for the politics as much as for some stilted acting, some - wait ONE VERY STUPID CHARACTER and a couple other problems that are actually consistent with a cinematographical point of view, but I agree that if politics is the reason one doesn't like the prequels... tough shit buddy, it's all quite riveting stuff. Again, from a cinematographic view point, I think. It's got its reasons and it's well done, even superb at times. Padme's line is a fuckin' classic in my humble opinion. They used (and have always used actually) a cool escapist action franchise to pointedly comment on very real sociopolitical forces/movements that are not going away anytime soon, really. If that's not brilliant I don't know what to tell the disgruntled fans.

He wrote the script like it was a book, and tried to translate it to screen without really understanding how story-telling in movies works. The result is a story that's epic on paper and in concept, but just really boring to actually watch.

With a single speech, not only did he make the Jedi a menace to be exterminated, he declared an Imperial regime. Here's the thing, they'd usually not applaud this sort of thing, but the plan is actually very clever, he gradually reduced the balance of power during wartime in the excuse that such reductions were vital. That's some brutal political manipulation, I think that Emperor Palpatine provided a very interesting villain. In the end, you can still tell what his real goals are.
In the end, both the Separatists and Republic planets alike were merely gears in a very large and sinister game.

But how many in the senate even know how to recognise a Sith? Out of those how many were already bribed behind the scenes by Palpatine? Sure we as Star Wars fans know a Sith has yellow eyes and that he's wearing the same clothes he dons in holograms when communicating as Sidious. But do the characters at large know enough to recognise traditional Sith robes? A outfit doesn't automatically make you a criminal. Everyone would have to know it's exclusive to Sith to find an issue with it. More importantly how much info does the Senate have available on the situation in general? The Jedi know there's a Sith trying to get control, but how much of the Senate know that as well (that didn't already agree to help him behind closed doors)? As far as the universe is concerned the only Sith they know is a Sith for certain is Count Dooku and possibly his apprentice Ventress.
Then out of those that do know.... how many are too afraid to oppose it? From the Senates perspective Sith might as well be Jedi when it comes to dealing with them. They're both force wielders with lightsabers to defend themselves. If they would consider standing up against a Jedi to be suicide, then it'd be even more so to oppose a Sith who isn't going to hold back on murdering you.
Ultimately, if no one is verbalising that he's a Sith then people are probably going to pretend they're unaware of that even if they know. There usually is a peer pressure when it comes to groups to avoid appearing foolish by admitting you know something or don't know something if you think it'd be scoffed at by your peers.

When you follow along with the politics in the prequels, it makes perfect sense as to why people were happy about the fact that the republic would no longer be a democracy.
Same for Roman Republic turning into an Empire: rather a competent empire than a shitty republic.

You can see how the Roman system collapsed informally, and then collapsed in forms terms as well.
