Hi Think media team, just a quick question. Is it worth investing in audio and lighting equipment now when you are just beginning or invest later on? Thanks 😊
You may have already moved on from your question, but since they didn’t respond, I’ll offer my big fat opinion. Clear audio that captures the nuances of the subject is a must for great video. If I’m working on a project that has a budget that affords me the opportunity to hire people who are much better than I am on the technical side, I actually hire the location audio engineer before I even call my cinematographers. If you’re watching a video that isn’t the best visually, but has well recorded audio, you can usually still get value out of what you’re watching. But if the video is great, but the audio is terrible, 9 out of 9.1 times you’re gonna close the video and move on. The good news is that we’re living in a time of affordable audio options that are also very decent in terms of quality. I would def recommend a 2 channel USB 3 audio interface - Behringer makes equipment that’s pretty good and a lot less than most other companies, to name just one brand, - and a low cost xlr large diaphragm condenser microphone that are easily found on Amazon. If you do that, make sure that the audio interface has a feature called, “phantom power”, as condenser microphones require that to run. A microphone like that along with the Behringer audio interface can both be had for about a hundred dollars. An even simpler option that many people choose is to skip the audio interface and get a USB condenser mic, and you can find very usable options for around $50, some of which will even include a desk mounted boom arm to mount the mic and a pop filter that goes between the microphone and your mouth to reduce the unpleasant sound that the letters “P” and “T” can make. Lastly, the closer your mouth is to the microphone, the more bass and the richer your voice will sound. As for lighting, if you have access to natural light through a window, then you might consider picking up a small 5 in 1 reflector to place on the opposite side of your face from the window, assuming it’s to your side, and bounce the natural light back into the side of your face that’s not getting light from the window. Reflectors are pretty inexpensive and highly useful in a variety of situations. If you don’t have access to natural light, inexpensive LED ring lights can also be found on Amazon and these allow you to place the lens of your camera in the center of the ring light, which faces you directly. This will give you light that is even and balanced, though it can also make your features seem a little flat. Okay, don’t know if any of that was helpful, but either way good luck and don’t give up!
