- The Dick Van Dyke Show was an American sitcom that first aired on October 1st, 1961. Five seasons and 158 episodes later, it finished its series finale on June 1st, 1966. Long after its debut, however, it still had plenty of influence. In 1997, two of the show's episodes were ranked as numbers 8 and 15 on TV Guide's list of the 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time. Furthermore, TV Guide also ranked the series as number 13 out of the 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.
The show was created by Carl Reiner, who wanted to use his experience as a comedy writer to create a sitcom. Originally, Carl Reiner played the main character in the pilot, which aired in 1960 and was originally entitled Head of the Family, but it was unsuccessful. As a result, Carl Reiner sought out accomplished comedic actor Dick Van Dyke to play the role. Dick Van Dyke's experience on both radio shows and Broadway gave him the talent needed to play the main character of the show, and it eventually helped him gain even more fame as a movie star.
Dick Van Dyke played the character Rob Petrie, a television comedy writer. Half of the show focused on Rob's home life, but the other half was spent working in an office. This made the show one of the earliest examples of a sitcom that took place in an office. Later, the setting would go on to inspire many other famous sitcoms that also took place in a work setting, including The Office and Parks and Rec.
While only half of the show was spent in Rob Petrie's office, it's clear that the production team and design crew spent a lot of time on every detail of the setting. A combination of Dick Van Dyke's comedic antics and the extremely detailed set makes it impossible for any viewer to get bored during the show!

Love and appreciate its old fashioned values of home, family, faith, right and wrong, sooo much more now. Took it for granted when I was 9-14 years old. Of course I was aware of the awful attitudes and prejudices some people had, and Vietnam was a nightmare, but I was fortunate enough to live among people who believed as I did. 🙏👏♥️

I wanna say it's Carl R singing those awful lyrics on Jerry Helper's mini tapey in 5th season. Also the actor's voice in the play Mary attends when a watermelon rolls onto her foot. At least I think it's Carl.
Just spent the weekend watching seasons 1, 2, & 3. Funny how at 69 years old I'm just now getting some of the jokes that were over my head as a child.
I never forget the enjoyment I got from this series.
I was more surprised you didn't mention Carl Reiner playing Alan Brady on the show, and that the writers room was inspired by his time writing for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows.
Another one for you Sheldon Leonard produced the show. This was where they got the name for the lead characters on The Big Bang Theory.
Love that show. It was wonderful to find this during the quarantine 😷 on Hulu. It’s so great ❤️🤗 Dick and Mary were the perfect married couple.

Carl Reiner played Rob's boss also. He was on many episodes. He was part of the cast.
The boss was Alan Brady (a character he also played decades later on Mad About You). And he had some other cameos, too, like the pretentious abstract expressionist painter.

Yes, Carl Reiner was more than just a water cooler in a single episode! He played Alan Brady, one of the main recurring characters, like neighbors Millie and Jerry. He also did many of the voices, and played guest roles throughout the show. In the first season when he played Alan, you never saw his face--much like the Wilson character in Tool Time.

There's nothing Dick couldn't do! Physical comedy, juggling, magic, pantomime, song and dance. And he was handsome. He's in a class by himself.
And Mary was beautiful, and also a great dancer and singer. This show is underrated. Always kissing and kind, entertaining and having fun.
They are my favorite TV couple. Them and Jim and Pam from the Office.

The DVD show had hidden references in later shows. 1. "Mad About You".... Carl Reiner was a guest on an episode. He said Jamie reminded him of someone. Jamie's mom was a Laura-like character who had worked on CR's past tv show. The last scene Jamie herself was very Laura-like, chopping vegetables and saying "Oh Rob(or Paul..can't remember) 2. "The Middle" DVD was Frankie's uncle. Jerry Van Dyke was her father. The family was getting ready for DVD to visit and Jerry (Tag) told Frankie to move her ottamon because his brother, her uncle, would surely trip on it. There were Wu surely others

My all time favorite tv show. No references to fads of the day. Clothes that could be worn in any era. The best cast and writers. As funny today as when it first aired. They quit after 5 seasons and make you wanting for more. But learned from this video things I never knew before. Thank you!
Interesting that you mentioned the "no references to fads" and the clothes. One of the rules for the writers of the show was "no popular jargon" or other similar things that could date the show in reruns. Good observation on your part.
Actually, Mary Tyler Moore made Capri Pants popular in the 60's from wearing them on the show. Most women wore dresses before that.

My parents bought a set of encyclopedias in 1970. They were wonderful in their time in history
There is a place called Dictionary Hill in San Diego. Whenever you bought a set of encyclopedias , you got a plot of land on that hil when you bought setl.. the grade must be 35%. When I drive up that hill in my Excursion, all i see is sky at some points, scarry. On same hill , water flows uphill on some parts. On slow news days, they run story here on tv, in San Diego. Spring Valley area. lol NOT relevant at all with dick van dyke show , but ties in with Encyclopedias.. hahaha

You forgot to mention something. You forgot to mention that the star of the show that Rob and the gang wrote for, Alan Brady, was played by Carl Reiner, who appeared in several episodes
Buddy and Millie were my favorite characters. I loved the way Buddy kept shooting those "zingers" at Mel.
I loved Millie's 3 beat lines. "She was funny. Wasn't she funny? So was Soooo funny."
Apparently, you missed the fact that Carl Reiner played Alan Brady throughout the entire series, as well as multiple character parts.
I used to watch this show all the time. Was my favorite until Everybody Loves Raymond. DVD was real good TV, no bad language or nudity.
I enjoyed the video. I was surprised that you didn't explain that the show was supposed to focus more on the office, but because of the talent of Mary Tyler Moore, the producers chose to spend more time on the family than on the office.

Carl Reiner actually appeared in this show multiple times as the character Alan Brady, since they were all writers for the Alan Brady Show. So he didn't only ever get to play a water cooler. How can you get that so wrong?
Thank you! Someone had to point that out. It was driving me crazy! Even before he would show his face, he still made appearances as Alan. Then, by the beginning/middle of season 4, he started showing his face as Alan Brady. Heck, the most iconic episode of the show (which revolves around Alan) came out before "Uhny Uftz." "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" was the premiere of season 5. I don't mean to sound harsh, but...how could they get that wrong? I believe the first episode that shows his face is "Baby Fat" in season 4. He also appeared as Sergei Carpetna in "October Eve". Then, he was also in "I'm No Henry Walden," which I believe was in season 3. I don't understand! He wasn't even just Alan in the show...🤦☺️❤️
Carl Reiner’s appearances as Alan Brady unfolded very gradually. Carl Reiner actually appeared as OTHER one-time characters in several shows during the earlier seasons. He was a temperamental artist who painted Laura nude in one episode and a stuffy author in another.
Funniest episode was when Laura exposed Alan's baldness. Even as a child that cracked me up.
Reiner was a part of the episode where Everett Sloane invites him to a party for writers. The Blank Check Episode . He plays a poet , I believe..
Did you even watch The Dick Van Dyke show? You totally overlooked the fact that Carl Reiner appeared several times in the show, including as a stuffy author and as a bohemian artist, but most notably as Alan Brady. Also, it was Sheldon Leonard, the producer of the show, who told Carl Reiner that Reiner was not right for the role of Rob Petrie and convinced him to look for someone else. Sheldon Leonard, by the way, also appeared in one episode as Big Max Calvada, a gangster. The name Calvada was also used at least one other time during the show's run - as the name of a soda pop. The name "Calvada" is actually the name of the production company that is responsible for the show (watch the credits) and is a combination of four names: Carl Reiner (CA), Sheldon Leonard (L), Dick Van Dyke (VA) and Danny Thomas (DA), which if you put them together spells "Calvada." The actor Danny Thomas was the money behind the show and was a guest star in one episode (you pictured him in your comments about the Mork episode of "Happy Days"). Though he was only in one episode of the show there are other connections between Danny Thomas and The Dick Van Dyke. Morey Amsterdam, who played Buddy Sorrell, once did a guest shot on Danny Thomas' show "Make Room for Daddy," playing the same character, Buddy Sorrell. But there's an even bigger Danny Thomas connection in the Dick Van Dyke Show, namely in the office. A picture on the wall shows Danny Thomas' name on a sign outside a Las Vegas casino. Also, Danny Thomas was the one who suggested Mary Tyler Moore for the part of Laura Petrie. She had once auditioned to play his daughter on his TV show. Finally, there's even a bigger connection between The Dick Van Dyke Show, Happy Days and the character of Mork. The Mork episodes of Happy Days - indeed, most of the episodes of Happy Days - were directed by Jerry Paris. Jerry Paris played Dr. Jerry Helper, the next door neighbor and good friend of Rob Petrie, on The Dick Van Dyke Show, which is where he also got his start directing.

Wow! The narrator distilled it all down to Caruso as being simply a “talented tenor.“. My gosh! Enrico Caruso was one of the greats in opera. He was world-famous.
He survived the Great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
It's funny how they used the same actors to play different characters in different episodes. Frank Adamo who was Dick's assistant played many different small roles in different episodes. The older lady who played Richie's teacher played Rob's mother in a few shows. Laura's mom was a lady with a cat in a veterinarian's waiting room in one show. The actor's playing both Rob and Laura's parents changed over the years as did the ones playing Buddy's wife Pickles.
The writing and acting hold up marvelously ❤

RE: #1 Carl Reiner did a lot more than play the Water Cooler on the show. He WAS Alan Brady and appeared as him in 32 episodes PLUS also played several other funny characters on the show. Dumb to not mention that as opposed to his just skipping to his Ocean's movies. His last role was in Toy Story 4.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn That Girl shares the same sort of humor as DVDyke show. Another Desilu studio show The Mothers in Law while not the same gives a flavor of the Desilu years. Sadly it's no longer on TH-cam.

Carl Reiner's voice is also heard in the episode when Laura goes away and bored Rob watches TV, but the endless commercials put him asleep before he can watch Citizen Kane, one of the commercials is a fast talking used car salesman - yep, Carl Reiner. I'll assume the man who made this video is well aware of the Brady role as well as the Russian artist, the pompous double talk professor and other guest appearances but wanted to insert little known other Reiner moments such as the water cooler.
Carl also voiced the radio announcer on the "Bupkis" episode, when he announced the "Dum Dums" with their new hit "Bupkis." He also (hilarious gag) announced the radio call sign as "WIFE" that "most people are married to" But, the WIFE sign implied then that the listener was a man, ignoring the women listeners--as most were back then during the day when the husband was at work!

Was startled to see my living room table lamp on the office's corner table. Mine was originally a Christmas present to my folks from my sister in Dec. of 1961. It has chess men on every other square on the front, and is very heavy being solid brass. Exact lamp, even the dull black base is the same.

I absolutely LOVED THE DVD show. My favorite shows were the ones when they had dinner parties and they sang and danced.
I love the few that they’ve been replaying “colorized”. It’s so cool to see what the studio audience would’ve seen when it first aired. I wish they would colorize more episodes. MTM reminds me of my Mama when I was a kid.

My favorite episode by far is Talk to the snail where the awesome talents of Paul Winchell are showcased. But I do love the whole amazing show.
You still didn't see what the audience saw. TV and Movies filmed in black and white used specific shading and lighting as well as colors of items used in sets and costumes. To give you an example, The set of The Munsters was pink and other colors. You may recall all the ruckus over Ted Turner's attempt.
How lucky we are that these old sitcoms were shot on 35mm film. All that extra detail that never made it into low res TV sets of the 60s.
I've noticed with these new HD tvs that you really see the sweat on the actors faces in closeups. I don't like that.
You can thank Desi Arnaz for that. He wanted the better resolution of film, rather than the low resolution of kinescopes.

Carl Reiner appeared at least a couple of times that I remember in the show as Alan Brady, the star of the show for which Rob and the others wrote. IMDb says he was in 32 episodes, but I don't remember seeing him that often, but then, I was a kid when it was on.
I was more surprised by the disappearing office bookshelf.
I saw Mori Amsterdam in a shopping centre visit in Sydney Australia in about 1970.

Carl Reiner was NOT just the voice of the water cooler. Any fan of the series would know that he played Alan Brady who was featured several times throughout the series. And lesser known, He also played an artist who painted Laura as a nude.
As well as an “intellectual guy” at a party they attended.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with Sally’s hair bow. I had never seen an adult woman wearing one. I guess I was always asking my Mom questions about it. 🙄 I was a weird kid. But at the end of the day, that was when I learned that you can wear whatever you want no matter your age!
I think I read somewhere that Rose wore it as some kind of homage to her husband, who died during the run of the show.
The hair bow actually hid a hearing aid the the actress needed. Rose Marie had hearing loss.

Well, many shows DO incorporate names of people from the production staff in the show. Like MTM Productions secretary Pat Nardo, whose last name became that of driver Elaine Nardo on “Taxi”. The last name of “Taxi” character Tony Banta came from MTM writer Gloria Banta.

I did see the names on Wall and also the art on the wall . cool that she was a real actress.

Watch the episode from season 4 entitled " Brroom, Brroom" where Rob gets a motorcycle. Rob drives up to a drive-in and parks his bike next to a billboard advertising "Calvada" as a soft drink.
I recently watched it (I have the complete DVD set) and always get a chuckle out of that shot.
The HAPPY DAYS episode that introduced Robin Williams was titled "My Favorite Orkan", a take-off on the 1960s sitcom MY FAVORITE MARTIAN. I'd love to see that episode someday as it was originally filmed. In the original episode, the whole incident w/ Mork was due to a dream that Richie had. After Mork was given his own sitcom, the writers of this episode thought they had to bring HAPPY DAYS reality into MORK & MINDY's fantasy world by having Mork show up & make Richie think it was all a dream.
An office show isn't really a genre, it's more of just a location. A genre is like comedy, mystery etc

Encyclopedia set is more valuable than anything on the internet at least you'll know when they start erasing things because the truth hurts somebody's feelings somewhere.

I was most amused by the Magic 8 Ball on Rob's desk which I hadn't heretofore noticed. That was actually somewhat of a trend back in the 60s as my grandfather had one on his desk.

I'm pretty much into details, as well as the Dick Van Dyke show. Some of the paintings escaped me, but then the show was so good, that I still pay attention to the great writing, and acting! LOL
Carl Reiner was a genius! I had seen the pilot episode of the series, and Carl just didn't fit the main character. But as Allen Brady, he was a natural!
One of the things that I saw change a lot, which many people may not pay attention to, is Laura Petri's hairstyle and wardrobe. The clothing seemed to transition to what was popular at the time, and wearing pants was still not mainstream for the most part.
Such a great show though, and I literally have been watching it recently. It never gets old!

I can’t believe that you did not mention that the TV set in their office was never shown to be on as their budget did not stretch far enough for the special effects needed to show it on. Also it looks just like a Zenith portable set. I had one of those when I was a wee lad. A very heavy set with a 17DQP4 picture tube.

The "office" or "workplace" troupe has been used countless times in giving the characters another family with which to interact. Taxi, most police shows, and others have used it many times. The short arm of the creative team.
For a channel that has the word facts in it, it misses an alarming number of them. For instance the fact that Carl Reiner, as mentioned below, played several parts on the show, not just water cooler glugs. In another video, they cite Robert Altman as having created the TV show MASH, which he had absolutely nothing to do with. These are huge, obvious facts, not insider minutiae. Have seen many more, but continuing to call you out bores me. If you can't bother to get the most basic of facts right, close down the channel.
