      I LOVED the show! I was a preteen when it was broadcast, and I couldn't wait until Wednesdays at 9:00. I didn't know, being that young, that the show would go off the air after only five years. I was devastated! Thank God for TH-cam!!

    Rose Marie's signature look was the hair bows, and her husband loved them. When he passed, she wore only black bows for the rest of her life. One of my all time favorite shows.

    This is one of those shows you can watch a million times and always see something new. Mary Tyler Moore was gorgeous back then and unto the day of her passing. The best moments of the show were when she and Rob would be playful with one another. Thanks for the post.

    Not fair to Rosemarie to say she was mad about her screen time. She had been in entertainment for a long time and knew how it worked. She was also not the writer's typist. Rob typed a lot.
    Also, June Cleaver preceded this show by 4 years,she also wore pants and MTM wore similar clothes. Barbara Billingsly also had kids that age and would get scripts changed. She said she would not get upset at her kids in real life and June would not either. June Cleaver was also pretty good at seeing through people.

    What separated TDVDS from the majority of other sitcoms of that era is that it kept itself grounded in the real world. The stories, the humor and the characters in the show were very human and relatable.
    Many other comedies shows of the same time period had way out premises with an emphasis on slapstick shenanigans, wacky situations and over the top characters ("The Beverly Hillbillies", "Bewitched", "Gilligan's Island", "The Munsters") etc.
    The humor on TDVDS was smart and funny and not so gimmicky which is how the majority of other sitcoms from this era come off as being. Don't get me wrong, these other shows are still charming and funny in their own way but live primarily in a fantasy bubble that's detached from reality.

    Sally was not a typist, she was a writer, Mary Tyler More was more interested in her future, not playing this part as an equal, it was understood up front by Carl Rainer, that was only going to be run for 5 years not the other cast members

    Though you’re right, it was still far from racially representative, the show had other breakthrough moments besides that baby episode. Godfrey Cambridge played a federal agent, and Rob spoke before the Council for Interracial Understanding, though with accidentally black dyed hands, which could be seen as a tasteless joke.

    Growing up as a 1960s girl, watching male-propaganda shows like this one, makes me wonder how any of us went on to be doctors, lawyers and CEOs. The "career" women back then were secretaries, never the boss. Later, in the Mary Tyler Moore Show, the star somewhat redefined the role of women in the workplace, but, though smarter and more competent, she was never the boss and a silly pompous man was the broadcaster. I guess I have my intelligent, progressive-thinking mom, who was a secretary, to thank.

    • @danaeads919
      @danaeads919 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mary Richards may have been promoted to "producer" of the newscast, but she was still at that damn desk next to Murry. I liked the show, but I really couldn't take Mary's character seriously. I preferred the rest of the characters.

    • @brianarbenz1329
      @brianarbenz1329 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Mary Richards character was, yet wasn’t a feminist breakthrough. A self reliant professional who sought and found better opportunities than marrying her small town sweetheart. Yet she still was the only person in the office to call Lou “Mr. Grant,” and was a self doubter amid her confident male colleagues, even the cocky incompetent Ted.
      And this ostensibly progressive show several times trivializes sexual harassment.
      Re: your mother. She sounds much like mine. She inspired her daughter and son to believe in respect for all people.

    Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie & Dick Van Dyke were all hysterical. Rose Marie had a stunning voice. I didn't think Mary Tyler Moore was as funny as everyone says she was. She didn't have a great singing voice either. I found Laura constantly whiny and annoying.
