Did you know that that plot of opening the husband's mail was taken from an old I MARRIED JOAN episode from the 1950s? I Married Joan was NBC's answer to I LOVE LUCY. It ran for 3 years, 1953-56.

that episode of the mixed up babies that were not really mixed up was a pure, comedy classic; it was so funny that I'm glad the audience back then appreciated it greatly. there are so many good episodes, I'm glad they can be streamed; but the one with the babies is one of my favorites; I can't pick a favorite character because they were so many good ones; like a true tv classic, the series developed the characters very well and there were several of them. Suffice it to say it's one of the very best TV comedy series, and as you pointed out was not afraid to handle controversial topics, an essential element of any advant garde tv series.

personalities and the selection of the characters that they played on television.📺
I'm glad that Proctor and Gamble backed up the Dick Van Dyke show. They help to expand television and open up the minds of average American household of that period. Dick Van Dyke is an amazing actor, entertainer and comedian. He has graced us with his talent on the big and small screen, stage and radio. He is a true American treasure, and we are all blessed to have him bring so much happiness for so many years to us. Live long and prosper Richard Wayne Van Dyke, aka Dick Van Dyke born December 13, 1925 and wishing you always continued health, happiness and prosperity.❤🙂👍

However, she finally has to open it and it turns out to be a big rubber raft that blows up and takes over the whole living room. It turns out that Dick had sent it as an idea for a story line to see if a woman’s curiosity would lead to just that. Funny? You bet! Today if I think of that episode, I start laughing. This show was by far my favorite show of the time. The main characters pulled you in as if you were watching them as a real couple. VanDyke and Moore played their parts well. But with all of the stories written mostly about Rob and Laura, it was Buddy and Sally that gave me the most enjoyment from the show. They were quick witted, and always trying to be funny, and they were.
The whole cast should get awards for pulling quite the performance! I watch this show even today, because of its humor, charm, and nostalgia.

@@FactsVerse There are so many….It would be hard to pick just one. Each episode had its charm. But one that stands out, as it deals with Buddy and Sally, was when they both took a side job entertaining at some club, not telling Rob. In the end Rob finds out, and was ok with the whole thing. But I could go on about all the episodes, because they just felt good. The neighbors Jerry and Millie, were always a treat. As I am writing this, there is one other episode that stands out to me, and I won’t go into detail, but the title of that episode was “Give Me Your Walls” very entertaining all the way through.

Always hard to pick a favorite episode when there are so many good ones. For this series the main character RP is easy to pick as my favorite. Not that the other characters were very good, but RP was the center of the show. I'm glad you mentioned the baby episode because that's one of my very favorites. A silly concern by RP that was well played comically blown up by the other couple's race, very funny and warm heartening, too.

First of all, the word "almost" should be in this title or else it's so misleading. Also, if supposedly there is a final moment in the finale episode in which Laura asks Rob what the title of the book will be and after several answers he breaks the fourth wall, looks at the camara and says, "The Dick Van Dyke Show," then winks at the camera, I've never seen it. I have seen every episode of this #1 sitcom of all time about 100x each but never that scene. If it exists, that's the video you should show. If not, it doesn't exist and never happened.

It is too bad you did not show it, but to me one of the best laughs in comedy was in the episode, "That's My Boy." As you said, Rob thought he brought home the wrong baby, so the couple who he thought had his baby shows up at Rob's home.. When Rob answered the door and saw the couple was black, the expression on Rob's face was priceless. The black man was played by Greg Morris. When Rob asked him why did not just tell Rob over the telephone, Greg responded with, "What? And miss that expression on your face." By the way, when I read a history of the show many years ago, it said that when the show started they were going to last five seasons. The reason is that after that shows start to get stale, and they did not want this to happen with this show. According to the the book the next to last show was, "The Gunslinger." It is still one of my favorite episodes. Guess you could say it DID go out with a bang! Oh, Dick Van Dyke was the only actor in the show to get residuals. They were not heard of back then.

Imagine going from highly sensitive and rarely addressed to overly sensitive and highly addressed topic on just about every show. Sounds like not much has changed since a “comedic approach could be misunderstood or misinterpreted” and some people “threatening to quit” if things don’t go their way. Try making a joke about the race of a child or people and a majority of the audience would go berserk and make it seem as though you are hating on bi-racial or black peoples.

@@FactsVerse I've several that I prefer. The episodes where the friends/main characters argue or have conflict with each other are always very humorous. My least favorite episodes always have to do with how Rob and Laura met and his time in the service and when Laura was pregnant with Richie. Some of the episodes and Rob's character could really be annoying rather than entertaining.

I've heard that. You do know what a "number 1" is, don't you?
      At least you're not a number 2. 😂

MTM didn't pick out the capri pants that she wore. You think an unknown actress in an untested tv show is going to tell the powers that be what her wardrobe was going to be? Clearly this was the work of the producers who figured that showing her in this outfit might attract a bigger male audience to get a better look at her. I only saw this show in reruns and I was always amazed at how lame it was. Also, it was originally supposed to star Carl Reiner who wrote it and actually starred in a pilot. The producers felt it wouldn't work because he looked and sounded "too Jewish".

Lucy was wearing the Capri pants 10 years before Mary Tyler Moore.

@@farrellmcnulty909 So you agree that the American public couldn't tolerate a Jewish looking and sounded man in a prime time sitcom?
