      Get 3200 mhz cl14 G. Skill TridentZ as those are samsung b-die. They can be overclocked to 3600 cl16 fairly easily. My rule of thumb is, if you are going with a >$400 GPU with a high end i7 CPU / Ryzen 7 (>$300) cpu, might as well pair at least 3200 mhz ram. Open world games nowadays need fairly high speed ram. You pretty much at least buy the ram speed in the middle of the lowest and highest speeds (2133 - 4600), so 3200 - 3600 mhz ram.

    After watching the full video I'm really glad I snagged a 32gb 3400mhz memory kit for about $100 less than regular pricing. It's worth it for maximum FPS in CPU limited stuff, but I was borking at the over $400 AUD regular price.

    Great videos as always!
    But could you guys please make a DDR4 memory guide for the most common GPU price bracket (GTX 1060/ RX480)? I have seen plenty of videos like yours showing performance advantages of higher frequency memory especially when the GPU and CPU are both already top of the line, but I have heard on channels such as DigitalFoundry that the performance advantage of higher frequency DDR4 is much more limited when using a more common setup (e.g; midrange i5 +1060 or 480)
    It would be interesting to see if spending say.... $10 more to get 2666Mhz instead of 2133Mhz on a midrange build would be worthwhile.
    Keep up the good work!

    I agree on the 16gb comment of 'should be the new standard'. The majority of everyone thinks I'm nuts, but I legitimately saw a gaming boost in all my games across the board switching from 8gb to 16gb. And no I don't have 4,000 programs running in the background, I'm very stingy with how much I have installed.. It is DDR3 though, I imagine 8gb of DDR4 is better then the DDR3 alternative :p

    thank you for this, I spent way too much time researching if I should go from ddr4-2400 to 3000. I found out that my i7-7700k only supports 2400 anyway unless I overclock. Im still going to get 3000 and just overclock the memory.

  • @srobart
    @srobart 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I found that my G.Skill Ripjaws memory overclocks quite well. I have a mixture of the 2133 and 2400mhz and it all overclocks to 3000mhz when I up the voltage to 1.31V and loosen the timing from 15 to 17 and 1T to 2T. I haven't seen or felt any difference, whatsoever in gaming, but in synthetic benchmarks, and using my ramdisk (about 40% faster), it makes a noticeable difference. If you're a gamer, get whatever is cheap. If you're doing video editing or something that's more memory-intensive, it might pay to get faster memory, or you can take your chances with overclocking.

  • @tamtikras
    @tamtikras 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Memory frequency only helps increasing FPS counter when your CPU+RAM combo are limiting factor. Let's say, you pair i5 6600k clocked at 4.0GHz and GTX 1070 ( overclocked ) and you will start play very CPU demanding games ( Watch Dogs 2 fo instance ) you will notice that majority of playing time your GPU isn't fully utilized ( it's loaded less than 99% of this potential ). You can solve that CPU+RAM "bottleneck" by overclocking CPU and pairing it with higher frequency RAM.
    Other example: overclocked i7 ( 4, 6, 8 cores etc. ) with GTX 1070- here you will see constant and full GPU load at 99-100% and therefore further CPU+RAM boost will have no effect whatsoever, because GPU already giving everything it has to.
    P.S. Steve, would be interesting to see tests where we could see that thin line when we are ok with i5 k-series and where we start needing stronger i7's to fully utilize graphics adapter.

  • @udoderunformige1250
    @udoderunformige1250 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is interesting that the RAM speed influences the performance in 1080p quite a bit (Depending on the game) but in 4k gaming there is almost no difference. So if you are planning to play in 4k you don't really have to bother about the RAM speed (yet. Maybe that will change with new graphics cards, maybe not).

      should change when GPUs are enough good to actually run games in 4K without being bottleneck.

  • @narfsc2657
    @narfsc2657 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So the conclusion is, i still dont know which RAM i should buy because you didnt said anything about dual-ranked vs single-ranked or single sided vs dual sided or chip quality. What if i want to play the real games where FPS matter? In other words games where RAM does a huge difference in performance, f.e. all those Source engine games like CSGO (which is even mostly played on resolutions like 1024x768) or Dota2 or other Heavy CPU bound games like H1Z1, World of Warcraft, Starcraft2? All those competitive games that matter and do benefit from buying a higher tier RAM werent even mentioned. Its good to know that people playing AAA titles on 4k resolutions doesnt have to care about RAM at all and can basically pick that stuff randomly, but that doesnt help me. I want the highest minimum FPS for games that people are actually playing over a longer period of time. So that i can theoretically play csgo with a 240 FPS monitor at the highest possible/affordable smoothness.

      yeah i just got a "deal" on 3200mhz for 134. what cpu is he using for the benchmarks? i know 4 core cpus gain more with fast ram. ive seen in one of his videos a 4 thread cpu gaining around 10 fps in bf1. its because the threads have to swap in and out of memery so fast. what cpu is this i wonder?

    • @rrd3k3
      @rrd3k3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure he's running an i5 6400 for all these benchmarks

    • @bobhumplick4213
      @bobhumplick4213 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol are you trolling me. a 6400 doesnt get 160 fps in bf1 even with a titan x, does it? i thought maybe 7700k or 6700k. maybe im wrong though. is there a particular reason you think so?

    • @bobhumplick4213
      @bobhumplick4213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah i just checked a 7700k video thats showing similar numbers so i think its an i7. one of his videos shows the difference with a 4 core/4thread chip. i think it was the i3 8100 which is the same exact chip basically as an i5 6500. it got like 10 or 12 fps just going from 2400 to 3200 i think. its one of the coffeelake videos recently. its comparing using a locked b or h board compared to an unlocked z series board. the b and h only go to 2133 or 2400, i think 2400, with the i3's. so he compares that speed with 3200 on the z board and it does like 12 fps more. i7's dont get much help from fast memory but i5's definitely do in any heavily threaded game. basically any game where an i7 does a lot better than an i5. when they preform about the same the i5 doesnt gain as much from fast ram

  • @shule1982
    @shule1982 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you play at 144hz monitor and you like competetive FPS games memory speed is very important! Minimum FPS is what you need playing at 100+ FPS. Overclocking CPU and Memory (i7 6700k@ 4.5ghz and ddr4 3400mhz for example) will give u highest possible minimum FPS on 1080p resolution. But only if you have R9 Fury - Fury x, Gtx 980ti, GTX 1070, gtx1080, Titan X you will se 5-10% boost in FPS, slower gpus will give you less boost and makes no sense to buy fast ram for example for rx470 or gtx 1060 ...The same thing is playing at higher resolutions, you dont need fast memory for 4k gaming...

  • @CaptainMageTank
    @CaptainMageTank 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    "The impact timings have on bandwidth isn't nearly as significant as frequency". When it comes to primary timings, that may be true, but tertiary timings and RTL/IO-L offsets drastically impact bandwidth, far more than the raw clock speed. With 3600 C14-14-14-28-2, my current ram setup handily beats a 4000 C18 XMP kit with relative ease in both raw bandwidth and latency. This is completely ignoring rank interleaving.
    Any who, as your tests have concluded, memory speed only aids in gaming performance in situations with high CPU overhead. As CPU overhead becomes less of an issue (such as higher resolutions) memory speed helps less. As you also said, high refresh rate gaming (especially those high-end variable refresh monitors) benefit greatly from faster ram as it helps determine exactly how low your framerates dip. Faster ram can help you stay within that freesync minimum refresh window, making it a nice investment given how easy it is to overclock even the worst Micron IC's to 3000mhz on the cheapest Z170 boards.

    hmm.. a bit of an odd video to be honest. Surely it would of made more sense checking out dual channel vs quad channel (because of Ryzen, 8 cores). Does it have any impact on performance, since the X99 boards are all quads. As you said, I think most people are waiting to see what happens with Ryzen now. Maybe you have already covered this issue? thanks.

    • @Hardwareunboxed
      @Hardwareunboxed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m confused, why does Ryzen have anything to do with Kaby Lakes memory controller? Also how does testing Intel memory performance tell us anything about Ryzen performance. Finally, quad-channel vs. dual-channel performance on the X99 platform was tested to death over a year ago, quad-channel makes little difference for the most part.

    • @Roguey
      @Roguey 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought you said in another video that you were check the difference between them (to see if that would impact on performance). I did a quick look on your channel and didnt find a video.
      I found it strange you wanted to talk about Kaby lake with regards of memory, since nothing much as changed since the past few generations. I thought this might be a question that comes up because of Ryzen.

    hey Steve, this is an interesting video review, and made me wonder if i shouldve gone for a z170 instead of my gigabyte g1 sniper b7 (b150 chipset), my cpu is a 6700 non k, ram is corsair vengeance led 16gb 2666 cl16 running at 2133, gpu is a 1070 oced to 2050 mhz and 8500 mhz vram, resolution is 2560*1080p, i know that the titan XP will push the cpu at 1080p, my question is, will i get significant performance improvement from upgrading my motherboard to a z170 which will then run my memory at 2666 in battlefield 1? i hope you get what im saying, typing from a tablet is quite cumbersome

    • @denlog1177

      No, imo you would not get a significant improvement by going from 2133 to 2666 MHz memory. Even CPU bound the Titan only gained 2-3% in BF1 at 1080p. Therefore, you would get about the same or less improvement with a 1070 driving slightly more pixels, which would not be worth the cost of a z170 mobo imo for the performance gained. Just save your $ for the next PC or upgrade. Maybe if you got a mobo that would allow you to overclock your non K CPU via base clock you could increase the memory speed at the same time, but even then it still may not be worth it considering the cost to performance ratio.

      Hm yes but you said "sounds like" so I used those examples as they sound similar (but not the same) - of course they are pronounced differently.
      Okay if you pronounce Z like C then I get it now. So when you say "zebra" you say "see-bra", exactly like 'see'?
      I would understand if similarly but exactly the same?

      Faster GPU? This is Titan XP. But going back: the impact is the greatest when CPU is under pressure, e.g. an i3 6100 in a CPU intensive game or section; then the high frequency RAM can compensate quite considerably for its limited performance. See some vids done last year by Digital Foundry.

    Hi I have a issue with my DDR3 ram, I have just got the FM2+ Asus ROG Crossblade Ranger for my A10 7870k, I have 2 sets of ram that I could possibly use with the mobo or so I thought. I have 16gb ( 4x 4gb) of HyperX Fury DDR3 @1866mhz with no XMP profiles so its just PnP, but I also have 16gb (2x 8gb) of corsair Vengeance Pro Series with a xmp profile of 2400mhz and they oc rather well..
    When I install all 4 sticks of the HyperX fury @1866 the debug always displays a 32 error code, but if I use just 2 sticks in A2 and B2 Dimm slots it boots up fine but only shows 4gb in Bios when there is 8gb installed and obviously in single channel , and one on its own in A2 Dimm slot wont work at all just error code 32, but my corsair ram works fine with both sticks but wont boot with just one. Is my ram defunked or is the Dimm slot defunked or bios just don't like them I don't know or it could be that this mobo only likes ram that has xmp profiles to boot.
    I have updated the Bios to the most recent version. I'm on windows 10 64bit, have no gpu at the moment for this particular build. So to cap off I have 4 sticks that wont work together, one on its own wont boot in any slot, 2 in Dimms A2 and B2 work but only half of ram shows, and 3 sticks don't work in any config. Am I only to use recommended ram for this mobo.

    So here's my problem, according to my calculations, ddr4 3400 cas16 is slower than ddr4 2400 cas10. So while the 3400 is out-performing everything here, it is beaten by a significantly lower mhz chip, with a much lower latency. So I am wondering what you have to say about that? Thanks. And wouldn't it be better in principle, to buy ram with the lowest stock latency you can get, and then overclock the frequency? Or am I missing something?

      DDR4 isn't that timing sensitive, nor are the CPUs that use it. For example the difference between DDR4-3200 using CL14 and CL20 timings on Ryzen in a CPU intensive game with a seriously high-end GPU is next to nothing...

    Correct me if im wrong, but can't you just buy the cheapest 2133mhz ram and overclock it to 3000mhz with a z170/z270 mobo and overclockable cpu? Assuming that you don't care about aesthetics of the ram.

  • @Thelango99
    @Thelango99 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really though, since so many mobos use only ddr4 2133mhz, it will not be much faster if at all than ddr3 running at it's max speed of 2133 mhz ( can reach 2400 mhz when overclocked.)

    • @Thelango99

      It's quite CPU intensive, so yes, depending on your processor. You will get a proportionately greater improvement if you have an i3 than if you have an i7 processor.
