      +Pow3rus LOL! No need to, nothing has changed! As per EVERY release of new memory technology, they have always sacrificed latency for bandwidth, has always meant no need to upgrade for gamers and desktop users. Once you get really fast memories with low latency at reasonable price for newest memory platform is there an incentive to change. I just sold my DDR 2 Quadcore rig with a reasonable gfx that is still able to churn new games at decent frame rates

      +домино™ ok let me explain this to you. The original comment says ddr4 gives 1fps more than ddr3. Which is true. But the skylake cpu can give you another 20fps than last gen i7 in some games. I saw a benchmark with it on witcher 3. To use that cpu and get those extra fps you have to get ddr4. Making ddr4 worth getting in that situation and therefore more than 1fps with that set up.

    DDR3's highest speed? No Linus, Adata and Avexir both make DDR3 at 2400Mhz stock even on single 8Gig sticks for up to 32Gb DDR3 @ 2400Mhz no overclocking. Avexir even makes some DDR3 at 3000Mhz.
    EDIT: Linus explained JDEC standard.

    • @TooSweaty4U
      @TooSweaty4U 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      blackice11z JDEC is the standard (or rather, the organization that sets the standard). Being over the standard doesn't mean its overclocked.
      By definition being overclocked means running at a higher clock than factory designed.
      If Adata or whoever makes them by factory to run at 2400mhz, the memory isn't overclocked but is over the standard.
      Any memory will be initially detected in a motherboard using a standard JDEC profile.
      That's why if you install a memory in a motherboard it will most likely start as 1333mhz CL9.
      (unless XMP is supported by both the motherboard and the ram and stuff but ignore that because thats non-standard JDEC stuff)
      The JDEC standards exists basically to tell memory designers how to expect a motherboard to try to use the memory, and motherboard designers how to expect a memory to be and how to use it.
      (imagine a motherboard trying to guess memory settings until it boots up, that would suck)
      sorry long shit post :E

    Should have added quad channel vs quad channel.

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  10 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Wouldn't work. Many of these benchmark results would be affected by CPU performance, so we needed cores that performed (outside of memory) exactly equally. Hence the decision to go ahead with two Haswell based chips.

    • @ColeMarkusen
      @ColeMarkusen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand the idea but both should have been considered. Especially with memory benchmarks raw CPU performance could be compensated for by adjusting clock based on known IPC differences. You could make the argument about memory controller and cache but that already varies in your current tests.
      It wouldn't make much of a difference though. They (DDR3 vs DDR4) perform similarly at the same speeds (slight edge to DDR4), but DDR4 clocks higher so it has the edge. The extra bandwidth of quad channel is pretty notable over dual channel, obviously. That's the only reason I dislike seeing only that case shown. I certainly understand why you guys did what you did, it just would have been nice to see x79 added in there, since it's not really apples vs apples anyhow given the platform changes.

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Cole Markusen It's MUCH closer to apples to apples this way. X79 with an IVY-E processor "fudged" to compensate for IPC differences is not scientific at all...Besides, to drive home the point here I *DID* include quad channel DDR4 3000MHz results... The performance is pretty much the same as the slowest dual channel in real world applications, so I don't really see how providing another whack load of DDR4 quad channel results or DDR3 quad channel results would change the conclusion.

    • @ColeMarkusen
      @ColeMarkusen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LinusTechTips It's definitely closer to apples to apples, but not exactly, but I also understand that you won't be able to get a true apples to apples comparison. The biggest difference is the cores and application. Games won't notice a difference, I don't think anyone was expecting it to.
      Your results are by no means inaccurate, they are spot on. But you're also not exactly doing anything memory intensive in terms or raw CPU horsepower (4 cores/8 threads) and memory intensive programs. When you start adding more cores, the benefit of DDR4 does start to show it's benefit. Granted, when you start truly noticing it you'll be in more server-grade applications. It's similar to DDR2 to DDR3. Similar performance at the same speeds but the newer variant can clock higher (let's blindly ignore timings for the time being, lol).
      I guess the main point was that there is a big difference between quad vs dual channel in terms of bandwidth and overall performance when you have the CPU grunt to use it.
      Not trying to challenge what you guys tested or your conclusions. Just that DDR3 Quad Channel and DDR4 Quad channel, at similar clocks, will perform similarly.

    • @LinusTechTips
      @LinusTechTips  10 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Cole Markusen Oh there's no doubt that DDR4 will show its true colours when you throw more cores at it. I just don't think that 6 or even 8 cores will make a difference. I guess that could be a whole separate video. Single vs dual vs triple vs quad channel on the 5960X at 4.4GHz...

      Of course I just built someone a budget 2600mhz DDR4 system & thats not pushing it either.
      The intel budget system its replacing had 1333mhz dd3 dualcore haswell that couldnt beat a amd DDR2 phenom1 system from 13 years ago
      So ya, some DDR3 is totally relevant & some stuggles to play this video haha

    What is the real-time data-transfer requirement (GB/sec) for games and other modern software. Compare that to the RAM you are using. There is your answer why on this and your other videos, the real-world benchmarks keep telling you RAM speed and generation don't seem to matter. Even the lowliest DDR3-800 can transfer multiple GB of data per-second (up to 6 GB). What real-world application needs even that?

    • @zamundaaa776
      @zamundaaa776 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      FL STUDIO by Image-Line Software it speeds up loading of games though. Models and textures are loaded into the system RAM and then, when it's fully loaded, transferred to the GPU. So in some games you might cut loading time by a bit. But it's just like half a second or so
      Also some stuff like AI or such can benefit from faster RAM speeds. Up to a certain point of course

      TheLordOfWar Even if you could, I don't think it's going to matter. It's the least effective most effective rule. The least effective piece of hardware ends up having the most effect on your performance. If your ram is overclocked to 3000, it doesn't matter how many millions of clock cycles a second the information is being processed if the timings delay the information on the back-end.
      I'm pretty sure Linus already did a test of various DDR3 sticks, and the higher speed ram performed almost exactly the same as lower speed ram and in some cases slower, because the latency was higher.

    • @robcandraw
      @robcandraw 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some individuals focus on the speed- like 1866 mhz is better than 1600 mhz.
      You must factor the latency in as well. (CAS/frequency) x 2000 gives you a number in nanoseconds for comparing speeds.
      Say you see a 1600 kit at 7-8-7-20 and a 1866 kit at 9-10-9-28 which is faster?
      Well 7/1600 x 2000 = 8.75 nanoseconds; 9/1866 x 2000 = 9.646 so the 1600 kit actually looks quicker
      Some basic gamers just think "bigger and more is better"- but you must research and crunch numbers - especially when calculating the specs for your machine. Are you not worth taking the time to get the most performance at the most reasonable cost?

My Intel i5 4460 and ASRock H97M PRO4 (combined with my GTX 950) give me a better gaming experience than any console I could buy (which was pretty much the goal of my build in the first place), and my 8GB stick of DDR3 RAM is working well, although I might get another stick due to requirements for newer games coming out. If you're just planning on keeping hardware for a while (and if your current CPU/Motherboard combo supports DDR3 RAM), I would snatch up a bit more DDR3. No need to go overboard and buy 64GBs of it, though (also double check how much RAM your motherboard can handle).

    Linus, you under stated the importance of cache size. a small cache size can have drastic effects on process that can easily mask the ram! mishandling cache can cause processes that normally take fractions of seconds to last for minutes. (my personal tests shows a simple square root that takes usually about 350 cycles can slow down to 300k cycles delay easily

      ***** DDR4 will be always useless if you ask me, not cuz of price. It is not a big deal in mhz since there are some limitations on the computer. ***** I want to tell you something. I switched from ddr1 to ddr3 and the differences weren't that big. The biggest differences were when I switched cpu and gpu. Mobo switches, ram switches, sound card switches i saw a difference of near zero. The biggest problem with ddr4 is that you have to switch entire PC, same thing i did with ddr1 to ddr3. (from single core to quad and it wasn't so big because i switched from xp to windows 7 and things got way more demanding.)

    I just built a computer for my wife a couple of weeks ago (march 2019). As she does play the latest AAA titles but mostly MMOs like Guild Wars 2 I dicided to go with last gen hardware completely. I got her an MSI Z97 gaming 3, 16 GB of G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3 2133 Mhz, an i7-4790k and an MSI GTX 1660ti gaming X (granted that one is new but it is cheap enough that there was no need for an older card in my opinion). And I can safely say that the system runs really well. It even runs games like Star Citizen on high details without breaking asweat. And I didn't even overclock it, but just went with the XMP profile for the RAM and the standard boost for the CPU. I bought everything but the GPU used so the complete system (other than the PSU and the case which I had laying around) for around 550,- €. Edit: And the 550,-€ even include me fucking up royaly by buying the wrong RAM first. I first got HyperX Savage not realizing that it needs 1,6V... stupid me.

  • @z1mt0n1x2

    So basically... We just spend more money for the high frequenzy and the DDR4 branding but we ain't getting any performance increases. Only difference from DDR3 is that it draws less volts.
    What a complete waste in my opinion! I ain't going to switch to DDR4 untill there's some decently priced CPU's available on the market, which is the only thing that would increase performance but that would've happened without DDR4 anyway.
    Seems like introducing DDR4 was just a way for RAM manufacturers to raise their prices.

    I bought an AMD FX9550 back in 2013. My power cpu power cord melted, into the motherboard last week, which happened right after a big windows update to 1909. Right after that update my computer began crashing a lot, I'm not 100% saying it was the update, but very odd timing. I kept turning it back on, but was struggling to uninstall the update, and then I smelt that burning smell, and saw the browness, and a bubble in the power cord right where it plugs into the motherboard. I had already placed an order for a new Ryzen 9 3900x, and was planning to upgrade. I would already have been gaming on that machine, but I realized I needed DDR4 memory, and I couldn't simply use the memory I already had. I thought this was brand new, but here's this video from 6 years ago. That machine seems to have really lasted. Now I need a new power supply just to be safe, while I wait for my parts to arrive, I'm back on a AMD Phenom II x6 1090T, that I built in 2010. I threw in my GTX 1060 graphics card, and my additional 4 usb 3.0 pci card, but due to lacking instruction sets, I can't seem to play COD Warzone, or VR Pokwer Stars, though I think my rig could manage power wise.

    I was thinking about building a new machine, just so I could get the new Flight Simulator 2020. After pricing out all of the new components, it hit me that I have perfectly good lGA 1150 and lga 1155 socket computers both with core i7 processors, 16gigs of ram and ssd drives. My concern was whether the ddr3 in both my machines would hold me back significantly. But based on what you demonstrated, I just decided my machines would do fine. I'm just going to put an SSD with Windows 10 on it, next to the hard drive with windows 7, then shift back and forth. Thanks for doing this report.
